Slow, deadly road to peace for U.S. troops in Kandahar

Afghanistan (Reuters) – As U.S. soldiers from Alpha Company stepped out of their outpost on a scorching July morning in Arghandab in southern Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, an all too familiar sound rang through the air.

“Can you hear that? They’re blowing their horns again,” one soldier shouts down the line.

It is a sound the U.S. soldiers have become accustomed to nearly every time they go out on patrol — insurgents sounding their car and motorcycle horns, warning each other the Americans are on the move.

A couple of hours into the patrol and the even more familiar crack of gunfire breaks the mundane silence. The soldiers dive for cover, bullets whistling past their heads, as they work out where the shots are coming from.

“Flank it 1 Alpha!” Sergeant Jonathan Garcia screams at his soldiers up ahead before firing off a couple rounds over the low mudbrick wall.

As the soldiers maneuver forward, the insurgents — probably no more than three or four men — lose heart and disappear into the thick vegetation.

Apart from one Afghan soldier who takes a bullet through his leg and is airlifted to safety, the battle passes without incident and finishes as quickly as it started. This is Kuhak, a small village nestled inside the pomegranate orchards of Afghanistan’s Arghandab valley, only miles outside Kandahar city.

It is a scene the soldiers from Alpha Company, 2-508th Parachute Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, are getting all too used to since they moved into the area in December.

Homemade bombs and gunbattles are now an almost daily occurrence. In the last week alone, the men at Kuhak have come under fire five times.

GATEWAY TO CITY

The reason the insurgents are putting up a tough fight in Arghandab is because the district forms a gateway to Kandahar from the north and the militants do not want to give that up.

With only around 2,500 Canadian troops patrolling the entire province until last year, the Taliban, for years had virtual free reign around Kandahar. When U.S. troops arrived there in Spring 2009, they disturbed something of a hornets’ nest.

A U.S. Stryker Brigade that first moved in suffered heavy losses early into its deployment. More than 20 soldiers were killed and many more wounded, most by homemade bombs.

Recognizing the province was neglected for too long, military commanders have now shifted focus from neighboring Helmand to Kandahar, in a bid to drive the insurgency from its heartland strongholds.

Instead of launching a massive offensive as in Helmand earlier this year, however, commanders are talking of bringing a slow wave of security to the area with alongside more effective government and backed up with economic development.

At the battalion headquarters perched on a hill overlooking the valley, a line of bearded men wait to see the district governor, who shares his compound with the U.S. troops.

Chris Harich, from the U.S. State Department, who has been in the district center since November as part of Washington’s civilian “surge,” said more villagers were now coming to enquire about development projects, but also to complain about security.

WALKING THE LINE

With all the talk of governance and development, for the young soldiers at Kuhak it is just another day and another gunfight.

The men from Alpha Company rarely see who they are fighting and if they eventually do catch up to them, the insurgents have hidden their weapons and melted back into the population.

“It gets really frustrating trying to walk the line between a counter-insurgency fight and not harming the populace and trying to kill the enemy,” said Platoon Commander Staff Sgt. Aaron Best.

Best, a bright 28-year-old on his second Afghanistan tour, understands the counter-insurgency message coming down from commanders, but that does not stem platoon level frustration.

“In 2007 I was getting blown up and shot at. I come back now and guess what, I’m getting blown up and shot at. Nothing’s changed,” he said.

Average woman dates dozen men, spends over $2K before finding Mr Right

Wellington, May 10 (ANI): An average woman would date dozens of men and shell out thousands of dollars before finding her Mr Right, according to a Kiwi dating expert.

A survey by a British dating site found the average woman goes out with two dozen men and spends more than 2000 pounds before finding that special someone.

But Verity Molloy, owner of Auckland”s Speed Date, claimed that these results are conservative.

Molloy, 37, said that a woman on the prowl for a lengthy period could date “at least” that many suitors.

And Molloy said that she could easily spend 440 dollars to look her best for one of her company”s singles events, although she wouldn”t spend that much for every date.

This could include 40 dollars for a spray tan, 60 dollars for hair, up to 100 dollars on an outfit, 40 dollars for accessories, 100 dollars for taxis and another 100 dollars for drinks.

“Everybody”s different but 4200 dollars is not excessive at all,” the New Zealand Herald quoted her as saying.

The British survey of 2173 women found 7 per cent went on between 41 and 60 dates before finding someone and 1per cent had up to 80.

Sasha Madarasz, dating agent and owner of Auckland matchmaking agency Two”s Company, says most Kiwi women might have between one and five “matches” before finding a relationship, and may go on two or three dates with each person.

She said it was hard to pin down how much money her clients might spend, but suggested women would spend “thousands” making themselves look good.

“If you go on first dates with four men you can wear the same outfit and save money, but if you”re going on three, four, five dates with the same man you”ll want a new outfit each time,” she added. (ANI)

Six people charged for allegedly assaulting police

Six people have been charged after allegedly assaulting two police officers at Mornington Island in Queensland’s Gulf country.

The officers were called to a disturbance on Saturday night and attempted to arrest a woman for illegally possessing alcohol.

The officers were not seriously injured but their police car was damaged.

The group of four men and two women have been charged with a range of offences including serious assault of police, wilful damage and riot.

They are expected to appear in the Mount Isa Magistrates Court this morning.

Hu won’t appeal against conviction

Australian Stern Hu will not be appealing against the severity of his 10-year jail term.

Last Monday Hu and three colleagues were found guilty of accepting bribes.

He was also found to have offered inducements to Chinese steel companies in exchange for their commercial secrets.

His lawyer, Jin Chunqing, has told the ABC that Hu will not be appealing against his conviction.

“After prudent consideration, Stern Hu decided not to appeal,” Mr Jin said.

“He made the decision after consulting his closest family and friends and us, his lawyers, as well.”

Mr Jin described his client’s decision as wise.

However, Hu’s three former colleagues – Liu Caikui, Ge Minqiang and Wang Yong – will all be appealing.

Hu will soon move to the Qingpu Prison on the outskirts of Shanghai to serve his sentence.

He will be eligible to apply for parole in five years.

Hu trial

Hu, the former head of Rio Tinto’s Shanghai office, and his three Chinese colleagues were convicted of taking more than $14 million in kickbacks from Chinese steel firms during tense 2009 iron ore talks.

During the three-day trial, the court reportedly heard evidence that millions of yuan in bribes from small Chinese steel mills were stuffed into bags and boxes for the accused.

The sentence delivered to Hu by a Shanghai court last week provoked strong protests from the Australian government, which described the punishment as “harsh” and said there were “serious unanswered questions” about the trial.

The Australian embassy in Beijing declined comment on Hu’s decision, as did Rio Tinto, which sacked the four men following the verdict, lamenting their “deplorable” behaviour.

Rio chief executive Tom Albanese said he was “determined” not to allow the case to “prevent Rio Tinto from continuing to build its important relationship with China”.

Australians go on trial in PNG

The trial of four Australians charged with drug possession has begun on the island of Bougainville in Papua New Guinea.

The four men were passengers on the yacht Perenti when police in Bougainville allegedly found 470 grams of marijuana on board on March 19.

Putu Winchester, 33, Thomas Olsen, 43, Michael O’Neil, 41, and Clayton McDonald, 33, have all pleaded not guilty to possessing a dangerous drug.

Local reports say their trial in Buka began with several police officers describing the search of the yacht.

The court heard two grams of marijuana were found in the captain Michael Northcote’s cabin, and 470 grams were found in a plastic bag near where the anchor was stowed.

The trial continues.

Acupuncture can help calm highly anxious dental patients

Washington, Mar 30 (ANI): A visit to the dentist provokes extreme fear and anxiety in many people. Now, a new study has suggested that acupuncture can prove helpful in the management of the uneasiness related to dental treatment.

The small study has been published in Acupuncture in Medicine.

The fear and anxiety ahead of the dental visit is a condition termed odontophobia. And up to a third of patients report moderate anxiety at the prospect of dental treatment, studies show.

The authors base their findings on 16 women and four men from eight dental practice lists.

Each of the patients was moderately or extremely anxious about going to the dentist for treatment, as assessed by a validated questionnaire – the Back Anxiety Inventory (BAI).

All were in their 40s and had been trying to deal with this problem for between two and 30 years.

The BAI score was assessed before and after five minutes of acupuncture treatment, targeting two specific acupuncture points (GV20 and EX6) on the top of the head.

The acupuncture was carried out by the dentists themselves, all of whom are members of the British Dental Acupuncture Society.

The average BAI score of 26.5 fell to 11.5, and all 20 patients were able to undergo their planned treatment, whereas before this had only been possible in six – and then only partially and after a great deal of effort on the part of both dentist and patient.

The authors point out that several attempts have been made to conquer this type of anxiety, including sedatives, relaxation techniques, behavioural therapies, biofeedback and hypnosis. The research indicates that these do help, but they are time consuming and require considerable levels of psychotherapeutic skills, if applied properly, say the authors.

They caution that further larger studies are needed to confirm the value of acupuncture in these sorts of cases. (ANI)

Tip-off leads to drug bust

A tip-off to Crimestoppers led police to a stash of drugs, cash and weapons.

Four men and a woman were arrested after police conducted a simultaneous search of three properties in Beechboro yesterday.

Officers say they seized more than $225,000 in cash, a stolen car and 250 grams of heroin.

Detective superintendent Charlie Carver says they also found firearms.

“One sawn-off shotgun and four pistols,” he said.

“Three of those pistols were loaded when the TRG entered the premises.”

Fabian Quaid jailed over drug conspiracy

A 33 year old Perth man with links to bikie gangs and AFL players is one of four men to receive lengthy jail terms for an international drug conspiracy involving up to $24 million.

Fabian Quaid and the three other men were convicted of involvement in the trafficking of 44-kilograms of MDMA, which was seized at a Perth house in 2008.

The drug was going to be used to make ecstasy tablets which Quaid was going to distribute in the community for profit.

In the Supreme Court, Quaid was sentenced to 17 years jail with a 10 and a half year non parole period while three other men received sentences of between 14 and 25 years.

The court has heard previously that Quaid was a friend of AFL players Ben Cousins and Michael Gardiner and during his trial he said he worked as a mediator for bikie gangs.

Man glassed in CBD

Police are appealing for help from the public as they hunt a group of people believed to have glassed a man in Sydney’s CBD last night.

An 18-year-old man suffered a deep cut to his arm in the attack.

He told police he was approached by a group of four men in their 20s who punched him in the chest and hit him with a beer bottle.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Crimestoppers.

Rudd warns Indian students to abide by Australian laws

Canberra, Sep.17 (ANI): Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has warned Indian students living in Australia not to take the law into their own hands.

The local Indian community has been told to take “some form of retaliation” following the assault of four men outside a bar in Melbourne on the weekend, reports The Age.

India has urged Australia to put in place quickly promised measures to protect overseas students.

Rudd said Australia was a law-abiding nation.

“The laws are there for a purpose and that is for all citizens to adhere to them,” he said.

When asked what message he had for anyone who took the law into their own hands, Rudd said: “People should not”. (ANI)

Victoria Police deny Indian bashing cover-up

Melbourne, Sep.16 (ANI): Victoria Police has denied they had a plan to limit publicity about the bashing of four Indian men outside a Melbourne pub on Saturday night.

Four men were arrested in relation to assault and affray, but they were released pending further investigations.

Police believe a fifth man may also have been involved in the bashing outside a pub at Epping in Melbourne’s east.

Details of the incident only emerged publicly today, prompting an outraged Indian media to claim Victoria Police had been involved in a cover-up.

Police said the Indian media were made aware of the incident via “other channels”.

Acting Senior Sergeant Glenn Parker said there was no cover-up, although he did admit the police media department would have known about the incident in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“Unfortunately, this type of incident occurs regularly. This is really treated no differently to any other event of this type. There has been no deliberate attempt to suppress it. It’s just part of normal procedure. It’s attracted more media attention than anticipated,” news.com.au quoted him, as saying.

According to the police, the four men were playing pool on Saturday night at a bar in High St, Epping, when a female hurled a racist remark at them.

The men left not long after but were followed into a car park by up to four males who were part of a larger group celebrating a birthday in the bar’s function room.

It has been alleged the Indian men were set upon and seriously assaulted by the group of males.

Police were called and arrested four males, who were interviewed in relation to assault and affray. ll four were released pending further investigations.

While only four men were arrested, one of the alleged victims told ABC Radio today that more than 70 people could have been involved.

He said the attackers didn’t use weapons, but racism was behind the incident.

“Definitely racism,” he said.

Police say that when the arrests were made, a group of about 15 men and women, who had been celebrating a birthday, directed racist abuse at the Indian men.

As the victims were escorted away by police, officers allege the larger group continued its “threatening behaviour and racist remarks”. (ANI)

Malaysian Home Minister clears sentence of whip-for-beer-drinking model

Kuala Lumpur, Sep. 6 (ANI): Malaysian Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has “cleared” the Prisons Department to cane part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, who is being sentenced for drinking beer.

Last week, department director-general Zulkifli Omar and a woman officer came to Home Minister’s office to demonstrate the caning sentence.

“She tapped the back of a chair with the cane. There was little force involved and it was not going to inflict pain, not even like the caning carried out in schools in those days.

“I am now satisfied that the caning can be carried out by the department if the court decides to proceed and enforce the sentence,” the Star Online quoted him, as saying.

Hishammuddin said that although he was now satisfied that the department was able to conduct the caning, he still felt it had no experience to do so.

“This is because the woman (Kartika) will be the first to be caned. Four men who have received caning sentences by the Syariah Court are appealing their sentences,” he said.

“That is not their purview. It is the judicial process which decides that. If the caning sentence is to be imposed, it is their duty to carry it out fairly,” he added.

Kartika, a 32-year-old mother-of-two, was fined 5,000 ringgits and ordered to be whipped six times for drinking beer in a hotel in Cherating last year.

Her sentence has been deferred until after Ramadan.

Several parties, such as the Bar Council, have called for the sentence to be annulled.

Kartika’s father, Shukarno Mutalib, when contacted, said the family was happy to hear that the department was able to handle the caning.

“Alhamdullillah. Kartika wants it over and done with,” he said. (ANI)

Wolf-whistles are the way to woo a woman!

London, Sept 1 (ANI): Planning to woo a girl? Well, then here’s a pointer for you: eight out of 10 women love men paying them compliments – even if they are strangers.

That’s the conclusion of a new UK study, which found that up to half women are secretly pleased if they get wolf-whistles from builders or if a man in a car toots his horn at them.

However, three out of four men would not dream of complimenting a stranger or colleague for fear of being thought a pervert, creepy or that they are “coming on to” the woman, the survey has found.

Market researchers www.OnePoll.com said: “It is a sign of the times that men can’t do or say anything without feeling it will be taken the wrong way.”

The study found that 80percent women like it when male colleagues appreciate their appearance, especially if he is single, good-looking or the boss, reports The Daily Express.

Ninety-six per cent of girls love compliments from their partner, though nearly half respond with a wisecrack like “love is blind”. (ANI)

Big Ben ice sculpture being created in London

London, August 20 (ANI): Sculptors are creating Big Ben on ice as part of a reconstruction of the London skyline.

The sculpture, measuring 10m in length and 3m in height, is being crafted by some of the world’s top ice sculptors amongst five landmarks.

“This is the first time we have been asked to design and produce a project of this scale,” the Telegraph quoted sculptor Duncan Hamilton as saying.

“The challenge to present such unique large sculptures in five city centres, at the same time and on the same day is wonderful,” he added.

Each scaled-down replica, weighing up to a 3.5 tonnes, is estimated to take four men about five hours to assemble and create.

They are to be unveiled by the Smirnoff Co in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Liverpool and London on September 11. (ANI)

‘Barbaric’ Somalian Islamic radicals publicly chop off hands and legs of alleged thieves

London, June 26 (ANI): In an appalling incident in the Somalian capital, Mogadishu, pro-Al Queda insurgents on Thursday used a machete to slice off a hand and a foot from each of four men accused of stealing mobile phones and guns.

The men screamed in pain, as some 300 spectators were compelled to watch the slaughter by the al-Shabaab fighters. Some of the onlookers even vomited while the amputations were in progress.

An ad-hoc court set up by the hardline al-Shabaab movement had earlier this week found the men, aged 18 to 25, guilty of stealing mobile phones and guns from residents in several Mogadishu suburbs.

“We have carried out this sentence under the Islamic religion and we will punish like this everyone who carries out these acts,” The Scotsman quoted al-Shabaab official Sheikh Ali Mohamud Fidow, as saying.

The punishments, which leading international human rights groups pleaded unsuccessfully with al-Shabaab to forego, have sent tremors through western diplomatic and intelligence communities.

Al-Shabaab openly expresses its support for al-Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, although intelligence sources said it has proved hard to identify what its formal links are to al-Qaeda. (ANI)

UK boxer Amir Khan quizzed by cops after brunette’s assault complaint

London, June 20 (ANI): Cops interrogated Commonwealth lightweight boxing champion Amir Khan, 22, on Friday following a waitress’ complaint that he had indecently assaulted her.

The 20-year-old brunette accused Khan and four others of molesting her at a party in April.

She said that she met Khan and his friends at London’s Funky Buddha club.

She alleged that the men smashed up her flat in Camden, stole items, and left a bag of white powder.

Khan voluntarily went to Holborn police station to face the questioning by cops regarding the allegations levelled against him.

Though Khan was not arrested, the other four men were.

The arrested men were aged 29, 31, 30 and 22.

A full report will be sent to the Crown Prosecution Service.

“He (Khan) adamantly denies anything untoward happened,” British tabloid The Sun quoted a source close to the boxer as saying. (ANI)

Bomb suspects disappointed that World Trade Center not around to attack

New York, May22 (ANI): The four men arrested for planting what they thought were explosives near two New York City synagogues have revealed that they were disappointed that the World Trade Center wasn’t still around to attack, a federal prosecutor said Thursday.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Snyder said the defendants were “eager to bring death to Jews.”

They were “disappointed…that the best target (the World Trade Center) was hit already,” he said, adding that the men were “eager to bring death to Jews.”

The suspects were arrested Wednesday night, shortly after planting a 37-pound mock explosive device in the trunk of a car outside the Riverdale Temple and two mock bombs in the backseat of a car outside the Riverdale Jewish Center, another synagogue a few blocks away, the authorities said.

Police blocked their escape with an 18-wheel truck, smashing their tinted Sport Utility Vehicle windows and apprehending the unarmed suspects.

Authorities said the men also plotted to shoot down a military plane.

James Cromitie, 55; David Williams, 28; Onta Williams, 32; and Laguerre Payen, all of Newburgh, were charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction within the United States and conspiracy to acquire and use anti-aircraft missiles.

All the suspects except Payen appeared in federal court in White Plains on Thursday, their hands shackled to their waists, preventing them from raising their hands while swearing to tell the truth.

Earlier, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly spoke at a news conference outside the Riverdale Jewish Center in the Bronx.

“They stated that they wanted to commit jihad. They were disturbed about what happened in Afghanistan and Pakistan, that Muslims were being killed,” The Telegraph and CBS quoted Kelly, as saying.

Kelly said he believed the men knew each other through prison. They had long rap sheets for charges, including drug possession and assault.

Acting U.S. Attorney Lev L. Dassin said the defendants planned to shoot Stinger surface-to-air guided missiles at planes at the Air National Guard base in Newburgh, about 70 miles north of New York City.

The FBI and other agencies monitored the men and provided an inactive missile and inert C-4 to an informant for the defendants.

The arrests came after a nearly yearlong undercover operation that began in Newburgh. (ANI)
