Vettel, Webber clear the air following ‘disaster’ Turkish GP crash

London, June 4(ANI): Red Bull Formula One racing drivers Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber have had clear-the-air talks following Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix ‘disaster’ collision.

The pair met with team bosses at their headquarters in Milton Keynes, and Vettel made the statement that both drivers are happy to continue to work together, The Sun reports.

The crash, a reprise of a collision between the two in Japan three years ago, came on the 40th lap when Vettel attempted to overtake Webber on the inside and then turned right into him.

Vettel spun out of the race, while Webber went on to take third place behind the McLaren pair of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

Red Bull principal Christian Horner said the crash, which robbed them of a one-two finish, was simply an “unnecessary” racing accident, and added that all factions of the team believed both drivers were equally guilty of not giving each other enough room.

“Ultimately we win as a team and we lose as a team and on Sunday we lost as a team, as a result of our two drivers having an incident. Having looked at all the information it”s clear that it was a racing accident that shouldn”t have happened between two team-mates,” Horner said. (ANI)

Red Bull’s Webber claims Turkish GP pole

Istanbul, May 29(ANI): Red Bull Formula One racing driver Mark Webber on Saturday claimed his third straight pole position of the season, when he clocked the fastest time in qualifying for Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix.

Webber lapped the Istanbul Park circuit in one minute 26.295 seconds to secure his place at the front of the grid ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton.

In making it three pole positions in a row, Webber became the first Australian to achieve the feat since Sir Jack Brabham in 1960 and the first driver in F1 since Ferrari’s Felipe Massa three years ago, The BBC reports.

The 33-year-old Australian has now claimed four poles this season, while the Red Bull team has taken all seven.

Webber’s team-mate Sebastian Vettel was third fastest, with reigning world champion Jenson Button fourth in the second McLaren.

Seven-time champion Michael Schumacher in his Mercedes finished fifth, ahead of Nico Rosberg in the other Mercedes, Renault’s Robert Kubica and Massa. (ANI)

“Repentant” Hamilton will not get ‘VIP treatment for driving offence’: Victoria Govt.

Melbourne, Mar 27(ANI): The Victorian Government has said that Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton will not be granted preferential treatment after being caught ‘hoon driving’ outside the Australian Grand Prix circuit at Albert Park in Melbourne.

Hamilton’s car was impounded on Friday night for 48 hours after police caught him doing a burnout with his silver Mercedes.

Victorian Major Events Minister Tim Holding said Hamilton should not expect any VIP treatment for the driving offence.

“It doesn”t matter who you are, it doesn”t matter where you”ve come from. If you break our hoon driving laws in Victoria you will have your car impounded and you will face the full force of the law,” The Herald Sun quoted Holding, as saying.

“Lewis Hamilton has learned that. I suppose it just sends a really powerful lesson to everyone that if you do the wrong thing on Victorian roads you will get caught,” he added.

Holding further said that Hamilton would be charged on summons and could face further penalties from the Grand Prix authorities or his McLaren team.

“He”s very embarrassed, I”m sure his team”s embarrassed and we just take the view that what this shows is that Victoria”s hoon driving laws apply to everyone,” Holding said.

He also said that the scandal sends out a bad message to youngsters who see Hamilton as a role model, but denied it would take the gloss off this weekend’s Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, Hamilton is expected to face the media after the final qualifying session today. (ANI)

Force India’s first podium finish, Fisichella finishes second in Belgium

Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Aug 30 (ANI): Formula One Racing team Force India, which is backed by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, on Sunday claimed its first podium finish at the Belgian Grand Prix, as Giancarlo Fisichella exhibited an incredible performance to finish second in the race.

It was also Force India’s first points finish in the team’s second season in the sport, where Fisichella finished 0.9-second behind Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen at the high-speed track.

“I was quicker than Kimi and I’m a little bit sad for that. We had exactly the same strategy. It’s great because I finished second, just one second behind leader – but actually, we could have won the race,” BBC quoted Fisichella, as saying.

After securing first ever pole position for Force India, Fisichella made a perfect start but a collision at the beginning of the race meant that Raikkonen overtook him after the safety cars left the track.

Fisichella matched Raikkonen’s speed throughout the race and applied pressure till the end, but could not thwart Raikkonen from winning the first race for his Ferrari team this season.

“It was fantastic. It was the quickest car on the track. Fisi drove brilliantly. Everybody did a great job. The points are worth squillions to the team. It gives us at least one place in the championship,” said Ian Phillips, Force India commercial director.

Meanwhile, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel finished third with 2.9 seconds behind, and Fisichella’s teammate Adrian Sutil finished 11th.

Currently, Jensen Button leads the Formula One championship with 72 points, while Rubens Barrichello is second with 56 points and Sebastian Vettel third with 53 point. (ANI)

Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium), Aug 29(ANI): Formula One Racing team Force India, which is backed by liquor baron Vijay Mallya, on Saturday claimed the pole position in qualifying session for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix, as Giancarlo Fisichella exhibited an incredible performance to come on top.

It was Force India team’s first-ever pole and the fourth for Fisichella, as he recorded a remarkable qualifying time with a lap of 1 minute, 46.308 seconds to start the Belgian Grand Prix at the front of the grid.

“It’s unbelievable. I didn’t expect to be on pole. It’s amazing. It’s fantastic. I’m so happy. Pole position! Is it true?,” Fisichella said.

“I need to thank the team because they did a fantastic job. I’m really, really happy – and really confident for tomorrow!,” he added.

Meanwhile, Toyota driver Jarno Trulli will start second and BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld will start third following a qualifying session that produced many surprises.

Force India has recently introduced a series of updates to Fisichella and Adrian Sutil’s cars, which showed signs of improvement at last weekend’s European Grand Prix, where both drivers ran well. (ANI)

Daimler chief raises fresh doubts on Mercedes future in Formula One

Sakhir, Bahrain – Mercedes could consider its future in Formula One racing if motorsport’s governing body FIA imposes “unreasonable” sanctions against the McLaren-Mercedes team over charges of deceiving race stewards, the boss of Daimler has said. In an interview to appear in the German news magazine Focus on Monday, Dieter Zetsche, the chairman of Daimler AG, said the company’s future in the sport could come under review.

“If circumstances should change, perhaps because of an unreasonable punishment by the FIA, it is possible that we could consider our engagement,” said Zetsche, who is also head of the Mercedes-Benz car division.

According to Focus, the Daimler board will meet on Monday to “debate scenarios for leaving the 250-million-euro (331 million dollars) spectacle.”

However Mercedes sports chief Norbert Haug told Germany Press Agency. (dpa)

Ron Dennis quits F1 for good

Woking, Britain – Ron Dennis quit Formula One racing for good after 28 years on Thursday when he left his post of McLaren Racing CEO for the executive position in the company’s automotive division.

Dennis, 61, had earlier this year resigned as team principal of the McLaren-Mercedes F1 team. The new team boss Martin Whitmarsh was also named Mclaren Racing leader on Thursday.

The announcement by McLaren came two weeks after the team’s world champion Lewis Hamilton was disqualified from the Australian Grand Prix for misleading race stewards amid speculation that Dennis may have pulled some strings in the background.

Dennis cited a major restructuring scheme at McLaren, insisting that “no-one asked me to do it.” But the step comes two weeks before an April 29 hearing before the ruling body FIA over the Australia affair in which McLaren could face more sanctions.

“I admit I’m not always easy to get on with. I admit I’ve always fought hard for McLaren in Formula 1. I doubt if (FIA president) Max Mosley or (F1 boss) Bernie Ecclestone will be displeased by my decision,” said Dennis.

Dennis entered motorsport in 1966 as a mechanic for F1 driver Jochen Rindt before leading his own Formula 2 team in the 1970s. In 1981, he took over the helm at McLaren and in the subsequent 28 years celebrated 10 drivers’ titles and seven constructors’ crowns.(dpa)

Lewis to stay on at McLaren

London, Apr. 17 (ANI): Formula One racing champion Lewis Hamilton will stay on at McLaren.

The world champion pledged his support for the under-fire team’s new regime as manager Ron Dennis stepped down from all grand prix activities.

Dennis, 61, insisted his decision to go had nothing to do with McLaren’s appearance before motor sport chiefs over the Aussie Liargate scandal.

He said the timing was “purely coincidental” and all about becoming chief executive of their new sports car business.

McLaren have to answer charges that they lied to race stewards in Melbourne last month at the World Motor Sport Council hearing in Paris on April 29. Hamilton had threatened to quit the team if McLaren were banned from races by the WMSC, reports The Sun. (ANI)

FEATURE: F1 finds harmony in grim times to ensure bright future

Hamburg – The world economic crisis appears to be a blessing in disguise for Formula One racing.

Not only have the grim economic realities drastically sped up major cost-cutting, they have also led to unique harmony between teams for the common goal of a bright future.

Luca di Montezemolo, the boss of Ferrari and the newly founded F1 team organisation FOTA, spoke of “an unprecedented moment in the history of Formula One” after the teams agreed to various measures to improve the sport.

“We do believe we can make it (F1) stronger and better in the future, and certainly if we work together we can really achieve some of those goals,” said McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh.

The FOTA roadmap includes a new points system, affordable engines, a ban on in-season testing and a limit on technological updates over the next two seasons.

However, motorsport federation FIA caused a surprise by rejecting FOTA’s new points system proposal, instead deciding to make the highest number of wins in a season, rather than the highest number of points, the chief criterion in deciding the drivers’ championship.

Had that been the case last season Felipe Massa rather than Lewis Hamilton would have been crowned champion.

But just three days later, the new race-win plan was shelved in the wake of protests by the F1 teams and drivers, meaning the points system from last season remains in place.

F1 also continues to exploit new markets, with first races in India, plus possibly Russia and South Korea, to follow those in China, Malaysia, Singapore, Bahrain and others over recent years.

“There are a lot of new markets. The world has moved on since it used to be more or less a European championship with one race outside in America,” said F1 commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone.

A similar shift could likely occur again, this time in sponsoring.

Many foresaw a money crisis when the European Union outlawed tobacco advertising in the 1990s at a time when the teams relied heavily on sponsorship deals from tobacco industry sponsors.

Now troubled American insurers AIG and the Royal Bank of Scotland are withdrawing when their deals end, but Whitmarsh remained upbeat when he said that “Formula One still has a broader commercial appeal.”

This also shows in the rumoured interest of British businessman Richard Branson to get involved, and a new US team is lining up for the 2010 season.

Unity showed when the teams rallied to save the former Honda outfit after the pullout of the Japanese carmaker. The new Brawn GP team will be supplied its engines by Mercedes.

A new Concorde Agreement between the teams and Ecclestone is also close after rows in the past over commercial rights income distribution.

The drivers have done their share to raise interest in the sport, most notably last year when Hamilton provided the most thrilling season finale ever to become the youngest and first black man to lift the trophy.

Looking ahead, Hamilton said: “I hope the racing is as close and as exciting as has been predicted because that’s always more fun for a driver and fantastic for Formula One’s fans.” (dpa)

Lewis Hamilton’s waxwork unveiled at Madame Tussauds

London, Mar 20 (ANI): British Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton’s wax figure has been unveiled by Madame Tussauds, as he gears up for the Australian Grand Prix.

Hamilton’s 150,000 pounds figure was launched in front of young fans from the karting club in Kent, where he had started out, and they also got to try their hand at a race simulation game installed next to the wax model.

“We always knew he would be a champion,” the Daily Star quoted club operations director Chris Pullman as saying.

“He’s done wonders for karting – so many youngsters are trying to follow his achievements,” he added. (ANI)

F1 technology being used for healing injured soldiers, land probes on Mars

London, March 12 (ANI): When novel techniques were first developed for Formula One racing, their inventors would not have thought that they would one day also turn out to be beneficial for healing the wounds sustained by soldiers, and for prolonging the life of central heating systems.

Now, the Fast Forward: 20 ways F1 exhibition at the Science Museum in London shows that F1 technology can be used to heal injuries and land probes on Mars.

The new exhibition shows how principles used in hydraulic dampers in Formula One have been used to develop a leg brace that minimises the impact of the repeated shocks to the legs suffered by United States Marines travelling in rigid inflatable boats in heavy seas.

The brace has also been shown to help soldiers cover from knee injuries.

The exhibition also demonstrates how the casing of the 2003 Beagle 2 Mars lander used a special lightweight plastic first used in F1 exhaust systems, adapted to protect the craft’s sensitive scientific instruments.

It further shows how strong but light carbon fibre shells used for the body of racing cars have also been used to create the Babypod II, a container used to transport babies requiring urgent medical treatment.

“Formula One engineering is a thriving activity in the UK. I hope the exhibition provides a unique perspective, and will appeal to a wide range of visitors, including those who aren’t necessarily interested in motor racing,” the Telegraph quoted Katie Maggs, the curator of the exhibition, as saying.

While rubber compounds used in Formula One tyres is being used for applications like an anti-slip work boot, scientists have also made magnetic filters to combat rust and sludge in domestic heating systems based on similar technology used to clean engine and gearbox oil.

The exhibition also reveals that low-friction fishing rods, which make it easier to haul in fish because less effort is required, have been inspired by the development of tyres slick enough to keep up speed, but with just enough grooves to ensure adequate grip. (ANI)

Lewis Hamilton finds another stunning plaything

London, Jan 22 (ANI): Brit Formula One racing driver Lewis Hamilton has found something else to play with, and he finds it very stunning.

Hamilton, 24, who is currently dating Pussycat Dolls member Nicole Scherzinger, was seen looking enamoured by his new McLaren.

The F1 champ took the 2009 MP4-24 car for a spin for the first time in Portugal on January 21.
