Motor racing-Ferrari fined $100,000 for illegal team orders

July 25 (Reuters) – Ferrari were fined $100,000 by stewards on Sunday for the use of illegal ‘team orders’ in winning the German Formula One Grand Prix.

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) also said in a statement that the case would be referred to its world motorsport council for further consideration.

The team, whose drivers finished first and second after Brazilian Felipe Massa allowed Spaniard Fernando Alonso to overtake him, were found to have breached both the sporting regulations and code.

Article 39.1 of the sporting regulations states that “team orders which interfere with the result of the race are prohibited”.

Webber is the only driver to have won from pole position this season, and has done so in the last two races (Spain and Monaco).

The last team to take seven poles in a row was Ferrari in 2000-2001. Ferrari have not been on pole since the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix.

The last driver to take three successive poles was Ferrari’s Felipe Massa in 2007.

Queensland Raceway unfit to host V8s

V8 Supercars chairman Tony Cochrane says Queensland Raceway will have to be improved to host a series event in future.

After a dramatic weekend which featured two much-publicised crashes in the support category Mini Challenge, questions were raised about the Ipswich track’s safety.

While an internal investigation into Saturday’s spectacular crash which sent two spectators to hospital is underway, V8 Supercars’ issues are with what they consider inadequate infrastructure at the venue.

The circuit was dropped from the series earlier in the year following a split between V8 Supercars and track management, only to be restored following a compromise deal brokered by the Ipswich City Council.

That deal however was only for this year and while Cochrane says he was happy with several upgrades made to facilities before last weekend’s meeting, more would be needed to keep the V8s going there in the future.

“There’s no question that for it to be a long-term venue for … V8 Supercars – it’s going to require some capital expenditure and some things improved, particularly from a fan usage point of view,” Cochrane told the SpeedCafe website.

Queensland Raceway circuit owner John Tetley, who has a strained relationship with V8 Supercars, hailed last weekend’s event as a success and said he was keen to open talks with V8s about future championship events at the venue.

“It’s up to them,” Tetley said.

“V8s put its calendar together later in the year, and we’ll do our best to accommodate the best we can by shifting things around.”

In other news for the V8s, the category is expected to announce a new five-year deal to race at the Australian Formula One grand prix in Melbourne.

The deal will keep the V8s at the Formula One event at Albert Park until 2015 with a stand-alone pit precinct for the category believed to be a crucial part of the deal.

“From our point of view, we are very focused on a new five-year deal at the Australian grand prix,” Cochrane said.

“To do that, we need our own pit complex, our own pit building, and we are in the very final throws of putting all the pieces of the jigsaw together.”

Courtney wins Melbourne V8 opener

James Courtney won Ford’s first race of the V8 Supercar season at the Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne.

The Dick Johnson Racing driver made the most of a mistake by Holden’s Garth Tander to seal the victory in the non-championship 13-lap sprint race at the Albert Park street circuit.

Tander, who claimed pole position ahead of Courtney earlier, had led from the start of the race but made a crucial error midway through the 11th lap to hand the initiative to the Ford man.

Another Ford, that of New Zealand’s Shane van Gisbergen, came in third ahead of TeamVodafone pair Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup.

While the win does not bring any championship points, it marks an important moment for Ford given Holdens have won all six previous races in 2010.

Aside from Tander’s lapse in concentration which handed Courtney victory, the only other moment of note from the first of the weekend’s three non-competition races involved Holden’s Rick Kelly on the opening lap.

Starting fourth on the grid, Kelly shot wide outside Courtney at the race start only to spear off-track at the first corner.

His race quickly got worse as his Jack Daniel’s Racing Commodore spun off the track later in the opening lap to send him to the back of the field, eventually finishing 24th.

The V8 Supercar action at Albert Park continues on Saturday with another 13-lap race from 6.15pm (AEDT).

La Porchetta founder dies in motorbike crash

Co-founder of the La Porchetta restaurant group Rocco Pantaleo has died in a motorbike crash in St Kilda in Melbourne.

The 53-year-old came to Australia in 1977 and jointly opened the restaurant group eight years later.

Police said he was hit by a car on the corner of St Kilda Road and Fitzroy Street about 11:30am AEDT and died at the scene.

Sergeant Mark Amos said it appeared Mr Pantaleo was going to the Formula One Grand Prix.

“He has a large number of access passes on him, so I dare say he was looking forward to a weekend at the Grand Prix,” he said.

“Unfortunately that’s been cut short in a very untimely and unhappy manner.”

Traffic on St Kilda Road was disrupted for several hours after the crash.

Victoria’s 2010 road toll is 74 – seven more for the same period last year.

Mr Pantaleo was in the news in 1997 over a shooting at one of his restaurants.

A coroner found that he shot a man, Keith Lane, after Mr Lane started punching him in a relentless attack.

Mr Lane came into one of Mr Pantaleo’s restaurants and accused him of assaulting a 16-year-old girl.

It was found that Mr Pantaleo shot Mr Lane in self defence.

Button grabs pole in Monaco

Button grabs pole in MonacoMonte Carlo – Championship leader Jenson Button on Saturday grabbed the pole position for the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix, beating Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen into second place.

The BrawnGP driver Brawn waited until the end before posting a time of 1 minute 14.902 seconds for the 3.340-kilometres course through the streets of Monte Carlo to make sure of his fourth pole position of the season.

Team principal Ross Brawn said that Button had shown before that he could compete well when under pressure.

“I think he likes to keep the best for last,” said Brawn.

Raikkonen finished 0.025 seconds behind to prevent a BrawnGP one- two on Sunday’s grid. Button’s team-mate Rubens Barrichello will start from third place on the grid and is joined by Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel in the second row.

The third row on the grid belongs to Felipe Massa in the second Ferrari and Nico Rosberg in a Williams.

Defending world champion Lewis Hamilton in a McLaren-Mercedes crashed out in the first qualifying session and will start from 16th on the grid.

Ahead of the sixth race of the season, Button leads the standings with 41 points after winning four of the opening five season-races. Barrichello is 14 points behind on 27, while Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel is third with 23 points. (dpa)

Alonso fastest in final practise session for Monaco Grand Prix

Alonso fastest in final practise session for Monaco Grand Prix Monte Carlo – Fernando Alonso in a Renault on Saturday posted the fastest time in the final practise session for the Monaco Formula One Grand Prix.

The two-time world champion needed 1 minute 15.164 seconds for the 3.340-kilometres course through the streets of Monte Carlo, beating the time set by championship leader Jenson Button in a BrawnGP by 0.069 seconds.

McLaren-Mercedes driver Heikki Kovalainen was third-fastest, followed by Rubens Barrichello in the second BrawnGP. Defending world champion Lewis Hamilton in a McLaren, who won the race last year, posted the seventh-fastest time.

The grid positions for Sunday’s race will be determined in the qualifying session set for later Saturday.

Ahead of the sixth race of the season, Button leads the standings with 41 points after winning four of the opening five season-races.

Barrichello is 14 points behind on 27, while Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel is third with 23 points. (dpa)

Vettel in command as Red Bull clinch one-two in China

Shanghai – Germany’s Sebastian Vettel clinched a rain-soaked Chinese Formula One Grand Prix in commanding fashion ahead of team-mate Mark Webber in a Red Bull one-two in Shanghai on Sunday.

Overall leader Jenson Button, who had won the first two races of the season, had to make do with third place, with Brawn GP team-mate Rubens Barrichello fourth.

It was the second Grand Prix victory for 21-year-old Vettel who last season became the youngest race winner in F1 history when he won the Italian GP in Monza in a Toro Rosso. (dpa)

Button seeks hat-trick in now legal Brawn By Elmar Dreher

*

Jenson ButtonShanghai – Jenson Button will be out for his third straight season win at the Chinese Formula One Grand Prix on Sunday now that his fast Brawn GP car has been declared legal.

The governing body FIA said on Wednesday that diffusers used by Brawn, Toyota and Williams meet F1 rules, forcing other teams to play catch-up which could take several weeks.

The diffuser is an aerodynamic feature which channels air out of the back of the chassis. It affects the car’s downforce which in turn enhances speed and performance, allegedly making the car half a second faster than others over one lap than one without the diffuser.

“That could be the decision of the year,” said German driver Nick Heidfeld from BMW Sauber, one of four teams which had appealed before FIA against the diffuser.

Heidfeld named Button favourite again for the Shanghai race because “he has won the first two races and the diffuser is legal.”

Ex-champ Fernando Alonso of the Renault team warned ahead of the ruling that the championship “could be more or less decided” because “the Brawns are going to be nearly unreachable for any other team.”

Brawn was naturally happy with the FIA decision which confirmed the Briton Button as championship leader on 15 points from two races ahead of his Brazilian team-mate Rubens Barrichello (10).

“The decision … brings this matter to its conclusion and we look forward to continuing on the track the challenge of what has been a very exciting start to the 2009 world championship,” said Ross Brawn, the boss of the team formerly run by Honda.

Button was in full command at the season-opener in Brazil and also won the Malaysian race which could not go the full distance due to torrential rain.

While Brawn, Toyota and Williams are tipped to carry the diffuser advantage at least through the Shanghai and Bahrain (April 26) races, the others have to come up with a similar device as soon as possible, but with no testing allowed between races.

The ruling is especially bad news for the big players Ferrari and McLaren-Mercedes.

Ferrari sit on zero points in the standings in a terrible start to the campaign and McLaren are not much better off with one point from world champion Lewis Hamilton’s seventh place.

Ferrari boss Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali promised that his team will “double our efforts” while Mercedes motorsport chief Norbert Haug called for patience.

“You can’t do in nine weeks what others took nine months to achieve,” said Haug, still hoping for “another small step forward” in Shanghai.

Hamilton won last year’s edition on the 5.451-kilometres Shanghai International Circuit, but also bowed to the realities when he said “it would be very encouraging if we could qualify a little further up the grid and be regularly challenging for points.”

However, McLaren must also do something for their reputation which has been badly dented over Hamilton’s disqualification from the Australia race for misleading race stewards. The team faces a FIA hearing on April 29 and possibly sanctions over the incident.

Good results would do the team good in Shanghai, where two practice sessions are scheduled for Friday, another practice and qualifying on Saturday and the 56-lap race on Sunday. (dpa)

McLaren suspends its Sports Director over Hamilton lie row

London, Apr.3 (ANI): McLaren have suspended Sports Director Dave Ryan following yesterday’s disqualification of Lewis Hamilton by race stewards from the Australian Formula One Grand Prix.

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh has suspended Ryan with immediate effect.

Ryan was the team member who attended a stewards’ hearing – along with Hamilton – following Sunday’s race, and was subsequently found to have lied in a bid to see the reigning world champion claim third.

Whitmarsh was forced to take action after being left shamefaced by yesterday’s drama at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, reports The Independent.

Whitmarsh said: “In my 20 odd years working for McLaren, I doubt if I’ve met a more dedicated individual than Davey. He’s been an integral part of McLaren since 1974 and has played a crucial role in the team’s many world championship successes since that time.”

“However, his role in the events of last Sunday, particularly his dealings with the FIA stewards, has caused serious repercussions for the team, for which we apologise. Therefore, I suspended him this morning and he has accepted this.”

Hamilton was excluded from the classification of the race at Melbourne’s Albert Park after “deliberately misleading” stewards in their investigation into an incident towards the end of the race.

Hamilton was elevated from fourth to third by the stewards due to Jarno Trulli being handed a 25-second penalty for passing the reigning world champion behind the safety car late on.

But in the light of further evidence, notably radio transmissions between Hamilton and the pit wall, and in an interview given by the 24-year-old soon after race, he and Ryan were discovered to have lied. (ANI)
