Work on gas pipeline to start soon as Pak, Iran complete all formalities

Islamabad, Jun.4 (ANI): Pakistan and Iran have finalised all formalities regarding the gas pipeline, and the ground work on the project would start soon following a survey, Pakistan Petroleum and Natural Resources Minister Syed Naveed Qamar Shah has said.

Responding to a question in the National Assembly regarding the progress made on the much publicised pipeline project, Shah said once completed, Pakistan would receive 750 million cubic feet of natural gas per day from Iran, The Daily Times reports.

Shah also informed the house that the project would be of great help to address the massive power shortage in the country, as 5,000 megawatts of electricity is likely to be produced utilising the gas from the pipeline, which has been termed the ‘peace pipeline.’

Out of the total 7.6 billion dollars which would be incurred on the project, Pakistan expects to spend 1.65 billion dollars.

Earlier, the said pipeline was to be extended to India also, but it backed out of the project, as Pakistan refused to forego its demand for a hefty gas transit fee.

The IPI project was conceived in 1995 and after almost 13 years India finally decided to quit the project in 2008. (ANI)

India will send black box to US

New Delhi, May 28 — The black box and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), which hold the key to investigations into the tragic May 22 Mangalore Air India crash, would be sent to USA, where it would be decoded. Top sources in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) – the civil aviation safety regulator – said they had decided to use the services of the best available lab in the world.

“We don’t want to take any chances. We have decided to send the black box and CVR to the best lab in USA. Certain formalities need to be completed before this can be done and we are in the process of completing them,” a DGCA official said.

Sources said the laboratory of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an autonomous agency of the US government, could be used for this purpose. A three-member team of the NTSB is already in Delhi coordinating closely with the DGCA team probing the case.

“Though the CVR was recovered in partially damaged state – affected by fire – it is expected to yield the desired information. Digital Flight Data Recorder commonly known as Black Box, the most vital source of information, has also been impacted by the crash,” the official said.

China to join New York talks on Iran on Thursday

China will join talks with the United States, Britain, Russia, France and Germany in New York on Thursday over possible sanctions against Iran, French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on Wednesday.

“The news is the announcement that China will participate in a meeting tomorrow in New York … whether they will talk about the text, whether it’s just to respect formalities, I don’t know,” Kouchner told reporters in Paris, adding he hoped the talks would be of substance.

U.S. President Barack Obama said last week he wanted the 15-nation United Nations Security Council to adopt a new sanctions resolution against Iran over its nuclear programme within weeks, not months.

“We (the Western parties) basically agree, and the Russians have already participated (in the talks),” Kouchner said.

“Negotiations will be long, will they be over by the end of April? I hope so.”

‘Boys who have nannies likely to become womanizers’

London, Mar 20 (ANI): Mums all over the world, please take note: Baby boys who have a nanny ””turn into womanisers””, claims a psychiatrist.

The Telegraph reported, child-rearing responsibilities too soon risks equipping your son with life-long double standards when it comes to women, Dr Dennis Friedman says in his book The Unsolicited Gift.

“It introduces him to the concept of The Other Woman,” said Dr Friedman who is 85.

“It creates a division in his mind between the woman he knows to be his natural mother and the woman with whom he has real hands-on relationship: the woman who bathes him and takes him to the park, and with whom he feels completely at one.

“As a result, he grows up with the idea that although he will one day go through all the social and sexual formalities of marriage, he will have at the back of his mind the notion of this other woman, who not only knows, but caters for, all his needs,” the expert added.

In case of girls, if they have a nanny to look after them they will be filled with a “vacuum of need” inside them which they fill in a variety of ways such as drink, drugs, sex or money.

He said the solution was not to employ a nanny or au pair until after the baby””s first birthday. (ANI)

No plans to retrench AI employees: Praful Patel

New Delhi, July 2 (ANI): Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel on Thursday clarified that there will be no retrenchment in Air India, and added that Air India has been asked to provide a restructuring plan in next 30 days.

A threat had been looming over employees of the national carrier, which has a total staff strength of around 23,000. It is facing a major financial crisis, following the global economic slow down, high fuel prices and operating costs.

“The airline has been facing a financial crunch for the past few years. Its borrowings have risen steeply from Rs.6550 crore in November, 2007 to Rs.15241 crores in June, 2009. This has been largely due to servicing of debt on account of purchase of new aircraft as also operating losses which have compounded due to economic recession and high oil prices,” Praful Patel informed Lok Sabha.

There were fears that Air India would retrench some employees to cut operational costs, but the minister made it clear that there was no plans to retrench any employee, rather they would be looking forward to the restructuring plan that the airline would be submitting in a month’s time.

Meanwhile, the earlier decision of paying the salaries by July 15 has been reconsidered by Air India, as it announced that they were working on the formalities to disburse salaries to lower grade employees by Friday.

“Air India is working towards paying wages and salaries to its employees in the lower grades on July 3, as part of the decision finalised at a meeting with the unions last week,” an airline spokesperson said. (ANI)
