Ford breaks ground on $300 million China plant

(Reuters) – Ford Motor (F.N) and its partly-owned Jiangling Motors Corp (000550.SZ) broke ground on Sunday on a $300 million vehicle plant in central China as the partners speed expansion in the world’s largest auto market.

The facility, capable of producing up to 300,000 units annually, will start operation at the end of 2012, the U.S. automaker said in a statement.

Jiangling, 30 percent controlled by Ford, currently operates two plants, with combined capacity of 210,000 units, making JMC and Ford’s Transit models.

Models carrying Ford and JMC nameplates will be made at the new facility, it said.

House offers clearing exemption for finance arms

(Reuters) – The financing arms of so-called end user companies would not have to send their swaps through clearing houses when they assist in selling the parent company’s products under language proposed by U.S. House of Representatives negotiators on Friday.

Politics

If accepted by Senate negotiators, the language would become part of a financial reform bill.

Representative Gary Peters said the exemption would save end users from higher costs and would not be limited to business-related work.

Companies such as Ford Motor Co, Deere & Co, Caterpillar Inc and Boeing have financing arms.

Arrests over bikie gangs street brawl

A violent street brawl between rival bikie gang members has led to the arrests of six men in Adelaide.

Police say Hells Angels members fought with members of the New Boys outside the Ink Central tattoo parlour in Hindley Street in the city, at about 1:45am ACST.

Police allege the Hells Angels used metal poles and chains and that chairs were thrown.

After the fighting, the Hells Angels drove off in two cars and police stopped one in nearby Light Square.

They say three men from Victoria aged 25, 39 and 40, a British national, 50, and a man, 31, from Magill in Adelaide were arrested and charged.

Police also arrested one of the New Boys; a teenager, 19, from Craigmore in Adelaide.

They are still looking for the people in the second car, a Ford sedan, which had Victorian registration XOM 677.

Restored WWII artillery to lead outback Anzac parade

A World War II field artillery tractor found on a scrap heap at a western Queensland cattle station will lead an outback Anzac parade later this month.

The vehicle, known as a field artillery tractor, was designed to tow guns in the North African desert and research has revealed it was used in Africa during the war but was sold at a clearing sale in 1947.

It was used on the cattle station to cart wool bales and hay and later as a bore drilling rig.

Winton Mayor Ed Warren says the vehicle was discovered by Gympie military enthusiast Lloyd McCarthy who has now fully restored it.

“It’s a World War II vehicle. It’s done service in the Middle East, It’s a Ford Blitz but it was specifically designed to tow 25 pounder guns around,” councillor Warren said.

“It’s very unique and it will come back to Winton a few more times for Anzac Day in the future as well.”

He says it will be part of Anzac commemorations in the town later this month.

“It had been pensioned off and bought at a clearing sale after the war. I think it ended up being a bore-pulling vehicle until it ended up being retired some years ago and they just put it near the dump at home and there it was until Lloyd [McCarthy] came along.”

Three people have escaped injury after shots were fired into a home at Moorebank in south-west Sydney yesterday.

A man and two women were inside the property but were not hurt.

A short time later a car similar to that used in the shooting was found dumped and on fire at Casula train station.

Police investigate attempted child abduction

Police are investigating the attempted abduction of a four-year-old boy at Cranbourne West, in southern Victoria, yesterday afternoon.

The boy was playing outside his house in Central Park Way, when a car stopped outside about 2:30pm (AEST).

As the driver spoke to the boy, a sibling ran inside and alerted their mother.

The man is described as about 18, with short, spiky blonde hair and a tattoo of a skeleton, or similar, on his left arm.

The car is described as an electric blue Ford XR6 or XR8 with a rear spoiler.

New car sales surge in March

The main auto industry lobby group says new car sales hit a monthly record in March.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) says 94,744 new cars and commercial vehicles were sold last month, up 25 per cent on the same month last year.

It was also 352 vehicles higher than the previous monthly record set in 2007.

The chamber says business sales showed some sign of easing following the end of investment tax breaks.

However it says there was a strong rise in sales of SUVs and passenger cars compared to last year.

“This is an outstanding March result and provides further evidence that the marketplace is returning to pre-global financial crisis levels,” FCAI chief executive Andrew McKellar said.

Car rental companies accounted for a large part of the sales increase, with a 331.5 per cent rise in purchases during March.

Toyota remained the highest selling brand with a 21.4 per cent market share, while Holden held a 12.4 per cent share and Ford was the third biggest-selling make with an 8.5 per cent share of sales.

Ferry disaster findings handed to Tongan king

Tonga’s Chief Justice has ruled the former head of the country’s Shipping Corporation of Polynesia cannot leave the country because it is feared he might never return to face charges over last year’s ferry disaster in which 74 people died.

John Jonesse was the CEO of the Shipping Corporation of Polynesia when it bought the Princess Ashika, a badly corroded ferry which sank on only its third voyage in Tonga.

A six-month long commission of inquiry report into the tragedy was presented to the King of Tonga today.

Jonesse has already been charged with manslaughter.

He had booked a flight out of Tonga to New Zealand tonight and won approval from a magistrate for his passport to be returned.

The Attorney-General appealed and the Chief Justice Anthony Ford said he faced a lengthy prison sentence if convicted and that would present a powerful incentive for him to abscond.

Car chase crash victims farewelled

Mourners have gathered to farewell a young family who were killed in a horror smash in Canberra 10 days ago.

Samantha Ford, 29, her partner Scott Oppelaar, 33, and their four-month-old son Brody were killed instantly when their car was hit by a stolen car on Canberra Avenue in Narrabundah on March 20.

The driver of the stolen car, 23-year-old Justin Williams, also died.

Police had been pursuing the stolen car from Queanbeyan south-east of the capital before the accident but stopped the chase after it ran a red light.

More than 100 people, including the surviving children of Mr Oppelaar and Ms Ford, filled All Saints Anglican Church in Ainslie to farewell the family.

Holden-Ford duopoly may be over

Chrysler has emerged as the most likely manufacturer to break the Holden-Ford duopoly in V8 Supercar racing after the sport opened the door for other makes to compete from 2012.

Leading manufacturers including Nissan, Hyundai and Honda have all said they have no current intention of joining the series even after new rules cleared the way for them to do so.

But Chrysler has indicated a potential interest in being part of V8 racing, cautiously welcoming the Car Of The Future regulations, which will open up the series to non-Australian made V8 engines and makes other than Holden and Ford in 2012.

“We don’t have plans at the moment, but we were certainly interested to hear what was going on with the series,” Chrysler Australia spokesman Jerry Stamoulis said.

“With us growing our brands in Australia, it’s something we could do in the future and we’d certainly keep in mind.

“We’ve got a heritage there. We love our V8s at Chrysler. It’s premature to say we’ve closed the door completely, but premature to say we’ll get involved.”

Chrysler has had a relationship with the V8 series as a sponsor from 2006 to 2008, using its V8-engined 300C vehicles as pace cars.

Under the new regulations for 2012 and beyond unveiled on Monday, the series will remain for rear-wheel-drive, four-door V8s only.

But the cars will no longer have to be Australian-made nor have a five-litre engine, meaning the Holden-Ford duopoly may be over.

Other manufacturers will now be given leeway to adapt their cars to suit the category blueprint.

V8s open the door to outsiders

V8 Supercar racing has opened the door for other manufacturers to compete alongside Ford and Holden from 2012.

New rules for the series revealed in Melbourne on Monday will allow other makes to join, as well as reducing costs in the category.

The series will remain for V8s only, but the cars used will no longer have to be Australian-made, nor have a five-litre engine.

Five-time V8 Supercar champion Mark Skaife has put together the blueprint for change known as “Car Of The Future”, saying it is needed to ensure the sport continues to grow as well as ensuring the survival of teams already competing.

Skaife said car building costs would be capped at $250,000 – a significant reduction on current levels.

“We want other manufacturers to come and play,” Skaife said.

“We know the Red versus Blue battle has served us very well. We know our rules and regulations have served us very well over the past 17 years.

“But there are clear threats, there is a lack of other manufacturer integration in our sport, and we have to take into account the landscape changes in the automotive market.”

V8 boss Tony Cochrane said the plan had been rubber-stamped by the sport’s board and the regulation changes would be in place by the start of the 2012 season.

Police pursuit driver farewelled

A funeral has been held for a driver who killed a young family in a crash in Canberra last week.

Justin Williams, 23, was behind the wheel of a stolen car when it collided with another car in Narrabundah, killing Scott Oppelaar, 33, his partner Samantha Ford, 29, and their four-month-old son Brody.

Police had been chasing the car but had called off the pursuit just before the crash.

Mr Williams died later in hospital while his 18-year-old passenger Skye Webb suffered serious injuries.

Nearly 100 people gathered at Woden Cemetery to bury him.
