Fire kills one, three injured

New Delhi, June 5 — A person died and three others were seriously injured, after a fire broke out on Friday night in a four-storey footwear warehouse in northwest Delhi. Delhi Fire Service (DFS) officials said the incident was reported from Jai Mata Market located in Keshavpuram’s A2 block at 11.30 p.m. “The fire broke out at a storage facility located in the building’s basement and soon enveloped the entire building,” said a senior DFS official. He said four labourers, who were sleeping on the ground floor were trapped, but were rescued as soon as possible. One of them, who is yet to be identified, died after falling unconscious due to the fumes and got burnt, the official said. Eight fire tenders were called to fight the fire. Residents, however, blamed a delay in the arrival of the fire tenders for the labourer’s death.

The DFS refuted his claims. “We had to take a six-km long detour to reach the area as a flyover is being constructed near Britannia Chowk. We reached the spot as soon as possible,” a DFS official said.

Now, $10 strapless flip-flops that stick to the feet with an adhesive

New York, May 19 (ANI): Forget about strapless bras and dresses, and welcome the summers with new strapless flip flops, available for juts 10 dollars a pair.

The new strapless, thongless Sticky Sandals attach to the sole of the foot with adhesive and can be reglued and reused this summer.

The footwear can be washed with soap and water when they get soiled,

The topless sandals are somewhat of a bargain, selling for 9.99 dollars a pair on AOL Shopping website, and less if you order in bulk.

And the best part is—one size fits most, reports the New York Daily News.

They’re perforated to fit, and you can also trim.

In fact, one can even accessorize these ultra-casual sandals with Swarovski toe rings and anklets, and if you’d like a bit more support, you can even order arch supports for 11.99 dollars.

The website also advises potential wearers that the adhesive sticks best when the feet are clean and dry, and that those who live in a “high moisture” environment may want to put an antiperspirant on their feet beforehand.

Just peel it off to remove. If that doesn’t work, run water on your feet, and if that fails too, reconsider rewearing them. (ANI)

Victoria Beckham has ‘Worst Celebrity Feet’

London, May 12 (ANI): Victoria Beckham a.k.a Posh has been named the celebrity with worst feet in a new UK poll.

According to the survey by Scholl, conducted to mark the footwear firm”s Keeping Britain on its Feet campaign, 71 per cent of think that the wife of soccer ace David Beckham has the worst celebrity feet and 67 per cent say that she should have urgent surgery to deal with her heel-induced gnarly bunions, reports the Sun.

However, 81 per cent of women surveyed still feel sexier wearing high heels and half the nation admitted to buying a new pair of ill-fitting shoes.

Of the 21 per cent who would let a famous person near their feet, Cheryl Cole for men and George Clooney for women topped the list. (ANI)

Romanian ‘shoe architect’ makes heels to help women grow 12 inches!

London, May 7 (ANI): A Romanian “shoe architect” has created towering heels that promise to help increase the wearer’s height by 12 inches.

Mihai Albu’s shoes are twice the height of the highest heels available, and the handcrafted sandals do not come cheap, selling for up to 1,200 euros, which is more than twice the average monthly salary in Romania.

“Heels have an advantage because (many women) don’t have long legs,” the Telegraph quoted him as saying.

“They reposition the waist,” he stated.

Albu, a former architect, who draws inspiration from Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi and Spanish architect Antonio Gaudi, blends math, architecture and art in his creations.

He uses French leather and encrusts the shoes with jewels, feathers and mirrors.

But the designer believes his shoes are worth the high price, and he says he has received dozens of orders for the new sandals from Romania’s well heeled.

“I am creating a constructed chaos,” he said, describing his extravagant sandals in architectural terms.

In addition to their breathtaking height, his footwear features special effects and its appearance varies, depending on the angle.

One sandal featured an emerald heel topped by a skull mask out of which bursts a shock of peacock feathers, while another featured three heels, two of which are decorative.

There are boots that resemble a glass vase and unicorn-like boots with a heel in front, and his latest creation, the 12.2-inch heel sandal, is a construction of three black wedge sandals. (ANI)

Mika to moonwalk in MJ’s shoes

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Beirut-born singer Mika is set to fill Michael Jackson’s shoes, for he has inherited the late King of Pop’s designer shoes, including the ones the late superstar was to moonwalk in onstage at London’s O2 Arena.

The ‘Thriller’ hit-maker had hired Mika’s good friend Christian Louboutin to design all the fancy footwear for his ‘This Is It’ concerts.

But after Michael’s sudden death, Mika, 26, ended up with the lot.

Mika, whose ‘The Boy Who Knew Too Much’ album will be out next week, has now talked about the shoes.

“Christian Louboutin designed all of Michael Jackson’s shoes that he was supposed to be wearing for the O2 concerts,” the Mirror quoted him as saying.

“So when he died, Christian asked if I wanted them for my tour. They are amazing. One is a black soft leather lace-up which goes up to the ankle to support Michael while he was dancing.

“Then there is the pair which must have been made for him to moonwalk in. They are gold with a metal toe and the soles are really smooth and slippy to make it easy to moonwalk in.

“I think they are the only pair I might not wear. It’s a little freaky to think he’d have worn those to do the moonwalk in.

“Then again, who knows, it might give me some magic power to help me dance rather than just jumping around the stage like an idiot,” he added. (ANI)

Shoe throwing Iraqi journalist’s release from jail postponed by a day

Baghdad, Sep. 14 (ANI): Iraq has postponed the release of the journalist who threw his shoe at former US President George W Bush in Baghdad last year.raqi television journalist Muntazer al-Zaidi will be released from prison a day later than expected, his brother said.

“He called me from the prison and said ‘they won’t release me today, they will free me tomorrow’,” The Telegraph quoted Durgham al-Zaidi, as saying in tears.

Zaidi, 30, was initially sentenced to three years for assaulting a foreign head of state but had his jail time reduced to one year on appeal. He is being freed early because of good behaviour.

Zaidi shouted “it is the farewell kiss, you dog,” at Bush on December 14 last year, seconds before hurling his size-10 shoes at the man who ordered Iraq be invaded and occupied six-and-a-half years ago.

Although Bush, who successfully ducked to avoid the speeding footwear, laughed off the attack, the incident caused massive embarrassment, to both him and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Zaidi faces the prospect of a very different life from his previous existence as a journalist for Al-Baghdadia television, a small, privately owned Cairo-based station, which has continued to pay his salary in jail.

Zaidi’s boss has promised the previously little-known reporter a new home as a reward for loyalty and the publicity that his actions, broadcast live across the world, generated for the station.

But there is talk of plum job offers from bigger Arab networks, lavish gifts such as sports cars from businessmen, a celebrity status, and reports that Arab women from Baghdad to the Gaza Strip want his hand in marriage. (ANI)

Indian footwear market has large potential

Chandigarh, July 13 (ANI): The Indian footwear market has recently seen a demand shift from low-priced footwear to medium and high-priced products. But the huge potential that this development creates is as yet largely untapped.

The growing aspiration to look trendy but comfortable has increased the demand for footwear having international high-fashion brands in Punjab.

And for the brands, it is an opportunity to provide the Punjabi consumer with products that have a classic elegance – tasteful luxury, enduring quality and fine imprint of craftsmanship.

Jimmy Choo, Pavers England, GUCCI, Moschino – just to name a few, the global luxury brands in footwear have already entered the Indian market.

Till a few years ago, buying a foreign footwear brand would require a trip abroad, a gift from overseas friends/family or at the most an online purchase.

But it changed with the permission for 51 per cent Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in single-brand outlet in early 2006 that allowed foreign footwear brands to enter India.

It also strengthened the organized retailing in footwear. The affluent customers in India today have a wider choice in buying stylish and comfortable shoes.

“There is a huge potential I would rather see. People are willing to shell out money for a good product. They need styling. They need comfort and if that comes for a price. Why not! At Show Tree we are selling at somewhat around INR 12,500 a show of Lacoste and it’s selling. There is a very huge potential provided the shoe should be very comfortable and stylish in that matter,” said Hitesh Aneja, Brand Head, Shoe tree.

The 500 million dollars Indian footwear market is growing at 15-20 per cent annually. A majority of global brands are foraying into the Indian market through the franchisee route.

Bullish about the Indian market, Reebok, an International footwear brand, is expanding its reach by joining hands with Franchise India Holdings Limited, an integrated franchise and retail solution provider.

People in the Indian middle class today have more money to spend on quality and designer footwear, and the working class too wants comfortable, durable and trendy shoes that they can wear at workplace.

They are now more brand-conscious then before.

“There would be 2-3 main reasons. First would be definitely the comfort level. You can find out shoes for 1000-1500 rupees but they are not much comfortable and I feel that the leather shoes of these big brands have longer life and longer shine. I am looking for some Italian brand shoes and definitely they give good comfort like sport shoes. In leather shoes, you find comfort in these brands only,” said Bhupender Jeet, an employee with the Multi National Company from Ludhiana.

“We get quality shoes by paying more. So that’s not a concern. The branded sandals are more comfortable. And comfort can’t be compared with the cost. Cheap quality shoes are not durable where as branded footwear is long-lasting,” said Manjula, a local resident of Chandigarh.

Shoes, say lifestyle Pundits, are second only to clothes in terms of importance and the styles are mostly Western.

Presently, the shoes are available at a price range of 50 to 500 dollars USD or more.

No surprise then that be it Moreschi of Italy, Bali and Rosetti of Switzerland or Merrell of the U.S. – all are willing to come to India. By Sunil Sharma (ANI)

Yorkshire lasses are Britain’s Bustiest Babes

London, May 14 (ANI): A new survey has revealed that girls from Yorkshire are the bustiest babes in Britain, with 35 per cent needing DD cups or larger.

The study, conducted by MBT, who makes footwear for those with posture problems, revealed that girls from Newcastle were next, with the lasses from Bristol not lagging far behind, reports the Sun.

Shoe hurled at Indian premier during speech

New Delhi – A protestor threw a shoe at Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during an election rally on Sunday, but it landed several feet short of where he was speaking. Singh was addressing the gathering in the western Gujarat state’s main Ahmedabad city and was momentarily distracted from his speech as a security personnel ran towards the spot where the shoe was lying.

The guard then kicked and later carried away the white sneaker which had landed about 20 feet away from the podium.

Singh continued his speech as the man, identified as Hitesh Chauhan, a city-based computer engineer in his mid-20s, was whisked away by security personnel.

Local news channels which broadcast images of the incident said Singh had forgiven the youth and asked police not to press charges against the man.

Police officials told the IANS news agency that Chauhan did not belong to any political group but were questioning him to determine the provocation or issue he wanted to protest about.

The NDTV network quoting police sources said Chauhan wanted to grab media publicity by doing so.

Shoe-throwing has become a preferred form of protest in the run-up to the month-long elections in India which began April 16.

This is the fourth occasion when shoes have been hurled at Indian political leaders in the past few weeks.

It all started on April 7, when a journalist lobbed a shoe at India’s Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram during a press briefing in national capital New Delhi.

Days later, a retired school principal threw footwear at Congress party candidate Navin Jindal during an election rally in the northern state of Haryana.

Subsequently, a slipper was thrown at Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani, by a former party worker.

Sunday’s incident was the latest in the series of shoe-attacks on political leaders – shoes have been hurled at former US president George W Bush and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. (dpa)

Research and Markets: Fast Track: Gas Plasma Treatments for Water Repellent Technology

DUBLIN–(Business Wire)–
Research and Markets
(http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/b2f944/fast_track_gas_pl) has
announced the addition of Textiles Intelligence’s new report “Fast Track: Gas
Plasma Treatments for Water Repellent Technology” to their offering.

Gas plasma technology can be used to change the surface properties of certain
types of materials, including ceramics, fabrics, leather, metals, paper and
polymers.

The technology involves the exposure of the material to a plasma at low
pressure, usually in a purpose built chamber. A plasma is a partially ionised
gas in which a certain proportion of negatively charged electrons are able to
flow freely rather than being bound to an atom or molecule. This makes the
plasma electrically conductive and highly responsive to electromagnetic fields.

Recently, gas plasma technology has been successfully applied to performance
footwear as an alternative to water repellent coatings.

The technology offers a number of benefits compared with traditional chemical
treatments. In particular, the treatment is said to be more thorough as it
covers the surface of every fibre and the voids in between the fibres.

Shoe chucker alarm, police ask Advani supporters to take off shoes

Coimbatore, Apr 14 (ANI): Following a recent shoe-chucking incident in New Delhi, the police, as a precautionary measure, asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers to remove their shoes when they visited the Coimbatore airport to greet their leader L K Advani.

“The police asked us to take off our footwear outside the airport premises as they believed some untoward incident might take place. We strongly condemn this act. Supposing another day, somebody takes off his dress as a mark of protest, will the police ask all men and women to remove their dress and enter a venue?” asked Vinod Kumar, a BJP activist.

They had come to greet Advani at the airport.

Advani was transiting through Coimbatore on his way to Kerala for a whirlwind poll campaign tour.

Recently, there have been a couple of shoe throwing incidents. A retired school principal threw a shoe at Congress MP Navin Jindal in Kurukshetra.

Earlier, an agitated Dainik Jagran journalist threw a shoe at Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram during a press conference at the Congress headquarters in Delhi.

In a similar incident, last December, Muntadhar al-Zaidi, an Iraqi journalist with Egypt-based al-Baghdadia television network, had thrown his shoes at former President George W. Bush during a news conference in Baghdad. (ANI)

Jindal latest victim of shoe attack, ‘forgives’ attacker

Kurukshetra (Haryana), April 10 (IANS) Millionaire industrialist and Congress MP Naveen Jindal Friday become the latest victim of a shoe attack when a drunk retired school teacher hurled a footwear at him inside the Congress party office in this Haryana town. Jindal said he had ‘forgiven’ the attacker.

‘Personally, I have forgiven that man but I think there should be some action against such people,’ Jindal told the media in state capital Chandigarh, 80 km from here.

The shoe did not hit Jindal. However, the Haryana Police took the offender, Raj Pal, into custody.

The incident took place at the Congress office here during a meeting of party leaders.

Police officials said the man had been medically examined and was found to be in an inebriated state when he hurled his shoe at Jindal. The provocation behind the incident was not yet clear.

Jindal, who represents the Kurukshetra constituency in the Lok Sabha, is seeking re-election from the same constituency.

Jindal wondered how did the man gain entry into the party office. ‘I am sure that he was not a Congress party worker and I do not know how he managed to gain entry inside the premises. He was in an inebriated condition and was continuously murmuring something,’ Jindal said.

Earlier, Congress leaders wanted to complain to the Election Commission against the opposition parties over the incident. But Jindal said he was not complaining, while suggesting that opposition leaders could be behind it.

Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office Prithviraj Chavan, who is the Congress in-charge for Haryana, condemned the show-throwing.

‘Such incidents are not at all good for the health of democracy and we condemn such acts. There should be a legal course of action against the people doing this,’ Hooda said.

The opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) too condemned the incident but blamed the Congress leaders for such incidents.

‘These incidents are a manifestation of the wrong policies of the Congress leadership. This also reflects on the infighting within the Congress. The person who hurled the shoe belongs to a Congress family,’ a spokesman of the INLD said.

The incident comes four days after journalist Jarnail Singh tossed his shoe at Home Minister P. Chidambaram during a press conference at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi to protest the candidatures of Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar for the Lok Sabha polls. Tytler and Kumar are accused of involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Both were dropped as party candidates for the Lok Sabha polls from Delhi.

Industrialist-MP Naveen Jindal latest shoe attack victim

Kurukshetra (Haryana), April 10 (IANS) Millionaire industrialist and Congress MP Naveen Jindal Friday become the latest victim of a shoe attack with a retired school teacher hurling footwear at him in this Haryana town.

Though the shoe did not hit Jindal, the Haryana police took Raj Pal into custody following the incident.

Police officials said that the man was being medically examined as he seemed to be in an inebriated state when he hurled his shoe at Jindal. The provocation behind the incident was not yet clear.

The incident took place at the Congress office in Kurukshetra, about 80 km from capital Chandigarh, where Jindal was present at a meeting of party leaders.

Jindal, who represents the Kurukshetra constituency in the Lok Sabha, is seeking re-election from the seat.

‘The opposition INLD (Indian National Lok Dal) is behind this incident. Their local leaders are responsible for this,’ Jindal told reporters.

Journalist Jarnail Singh had tossed his shoe at Home Minister P. Chidambaram during a press conference at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi Tuesday. His grouse was that the Congress and the central government was doing nothing to give justice to victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims. The throw worked, forcing riot suspects Jagdish Tytler and Sajjan Kumar of the Congress out of the poll race.
