Maradona and Messi work it out for Argentina

(Reuters) – Diego Maradona thrives on attention and continuing to be acclaimed as one of the greatest players of all time, which is a recipe for keeping Lionel Messi out of the World Cup limelight according to critics.

Sports

However, Messi did what all Argentines hoped for in Saturday’s 1-0 opening win over Nigeria, dispelling the doubts surrounding his ability to carry his country toward a third world title and Maradona, confounding the critics, did his bit.

In Maradona’s statements, even when he says he would like Messi to go down as the greatest footballer ever, there is always the lingering suspicion of a slight reluctance to accept that Messi is now what Maradona was but no longer is.

Maradona’s praise for World Player of the Year Messi is always tempered by an immediate follow-up about the quality and form of the team around him.

No-one is in doubt, though, that Saturday’s victory in Argentina’s first Group B match at Ellis Park was due mainly to Messi even if the goal came from a corner drill involving Juan Sebastian Veron and scorer Gabriel Heinze.

The key was a Madrid heart-to-heart between Maradona and Messi in April in which the coach gave the little ace his head and the role of pulling the strings in the team.

“I want Leo close to the ball and today he was there,” Maradona said on Saturday. Messi added: “Fortunately, I managed to get the ball a lot and make my team mates play.”

Argentina could have won by three or four goals. Messi made half a dozen clear chances and might have put a couple away himself if Vincent Enyeama had not played the match of his life in the Nigeria goal.

TURNING POINT

This was a far cry from the struggles Argentina faced when they had to cope with tough South American defenses in the qualifiers and were waiting for Messi to translate his Barcelona form into productive performances for his country.

With qualification finally in the bag, fans, media and Maradona, learning the job as he went along, relaxed.

He wanted to win another World Cup as coach after lifting the trophy as captain and needed his Messi just as Carlos Bilardo needed his Maradona back in the mid-1980s.

A March friendly against Germany in Munich, which Argentina won 1-0, resolved some issues for Maradona, like the inclusion of Walter Samuel in central defense.

But Messi still floundered, looking for his place in attack, so Maradona visited Europe in April for a heart-to-heart — just like Bilardo did when he met Maradona in Europe in 1983 to say he wanted to build a team around him.

Maradona asked Messi to say how he would ideally like the team to line up if the choice was his.

The result was the side that played against Nigeria with Messi lining up behind fellow forwards Carlos Tevez and Higuain. It was partially tested in Buenos Aires during last month’s 5-0 rout of Canada with Javier Pastore in the Messi role.

The trio rotated constantly on Saturday, confusing a Nigeria defense that was lucky not to concede several goals in the opening 20 minutes, and observers say Argentina’s impressive start was the best spell by a team at the tournament so far.

It was of course just the beginning for Argentina with South Korea, boosted by a 2-0 win over former European champions Greece, their next opponents on Thursday. But Messi and his team look set for the knockout phase and another shot at glory.

World Cup dreams lie far away for wannabes

John Auta shelters every night in a Lagos liquor store and dreams of a passport to riches in Europe as a top footballer.

Football comes to South Africa when the World Cup begins next Friday (June 11) but many of the continent’s young hopefuls still believe a ticket to Europe is the only hope of realising their footballing dreams. John is one of many.

Despite the pride surrounding the biggest sporting event held on the continent, the majority of players in the West African squads play for European clubs, reinforcing a view that only those who make it out of Africa can make it big.

It is a journey pitted with challenges.

“If you play football, Lagos is where you can make it,” said John Auta, a 19-year-old Nigerian who represented his country in the Homeless World Cup in Milan last year and is hoping for an invitation from a European agent on the back of his performance.

“You have the agents, you have the people. You get your paper and before you know it, you’re in Europe. Lagos is the gateway to success,” Auta said from behind the counter of a liquor store where he stays each night.

Like many in Nigeria’s most populous city, Auta is from somewhere else. He came from the northern city of Kaduna after his parents were killed in a car crash, one of more than 1,000 newcomers to Lagos each day, adding to a population of over 14 million all competing for limited jobs and resources.

Football is his great hope.

His Milan performance caught the eye of a Czech coach who sent him an invitation to go and train. But he was unable to afford the visa fee, let alone the plane ticket.

A Hungarian agent who also spotted him in Milan has promised an invitation once he has secured accommodation, but money remains a problem.

Despite the many diversions of a city like Lagos, Auta is focused. He does not drink or smoke. He trains as often as he can on a small concrete pitch.

Search and Groom, a Nigerian civil society group that helps frustrated talent, selected Auta to represent Nigeria at the Homeless World Cup last year. He missed out on the tournament the previous year in Australia due to a cancelled flight.

“It felt good wearing a jersey with my name. I felt like I was playing for the Super Eagles,” Auta said, referring to Nigeria’s national team. “I was proud to represent my country.”

But Search and Groom lacks the funds to send Auta to Europe. His Italian and Australian visas are so precious they have increased his passport’s value on the black market and he keeps it locked away at a friend’s house.

FAKE AGENTS

Like much of Africa, Nigeria is soccer mad.

Most people support an English premier league side and many young hopefuls see the success of Nigerians such as Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel and Nwankwo Kanu, one of the most decorated African players, as within their reach.

But fake agents and bogus organisations abound, ready to exploit the dreams of young hopefuls.

“I see a lot of people who do funny things, like telling poor kids if you want to be a star footballer, come and pay 3,000 naira ($20),” said Yomi Kuku, Search and Groom’s founder.

“Hundreds of thousands of poor people go to pay into the banks … It is so embarrassing,” he said.

Kuku founded Search and Groom eight years ago in Ajegunle, a sprawling working class Lagos neighbourhood that has produced top players including former national coach Samson Siasia and Emmanuel Amuneke, 1994 African Footballer of the Year.

The organisation has since spread to other Lagos communities with some support from world football’s governing body FIFA but remains short of funds to help those like Auta.

“My hope for John is that he’ll achieve his aim in life. He wants to be a footballer and wants to go back to school … He is disciplined but time isn’t on his side. We don’t have funding to help him but we’ve reached out to our contacts,” Kuku said.

OBTAINING PERMITS

Even for those young African players lucky enough to have the financial backing to get to Europe, challenges remain.

European clubs need to be convinced they are on to a real star before they will consider negotiating the bureaucratic obstacles to obtaining permits including visas, agents say.

“Work permits require a lot of documents and often the documents they ask for have to be sent from Nigeria,” said Joseph Nnachi, a FIFA-certified agent, alluding to the challenge of finding records in largely uncomputerised government offices.

“It is not enough for African players to be as good or even twice as good as European players. They need to be 10 times better,” said Nnachi, who is based in Britain.

Poor record keeping in Nigeria and other African nations can lead to questions over documents such as birth certificates too.

When smaller European clubs buy African players they often plan to resell them later to larger clubs. Once the player regularises his status in Europe and gains experience, it is easier for him to move from one team to another.

But that can make a 25-year-old African player a poor investment, deepening the incentive to lie about age.

“European clubs have it at the back of their minds that the African player is older than he says he is. At 25 or 26, his worth drops,” said Nnachi.

Auta has age on his side. Others have seen their hopes fade.

Athletic and youthful, Rufai Abubakar, 38, could pass for half his age, and indeed he has. After trials in Senegal and Ivory Coast and playing for teams in Ghana and Turkey, he is just making peace with the fact he will not be a top footballer.

“Football is about chance,” said Abubakar, who has set up a tailor’s shop with the experience gained while in Senegal.

“If they asked me to speak to a thousand boys who wanted to be footballers, I would tell them to get an education first.”

England soccer fans get specially composed prayers

London, May 24 (IANS) England fans will have specially composed prayers for their footballers during the World Cup.

Revered Nick Baines, of the Church of England, has composed three prayers that portrays god as a footballer who ‘played the cosmos into being’.

‘More people go to church than go to football matches. But football games are one of the few occasions when people have a collective experience in the same place at the same time,’ the bishop, a Liverpool team fan, was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.

Baines had included a prayer for non-believers who see no sense of the sacred in the sport.

‘More than half the population prays at some time and everyone will be affected by the World Cup in one way or another. So it makes sense to have some prayers for those that want to use them. This isn’t just about football. It’s about the rainbow nations of the world celebrating together with the people of South Africa,’ he said.

World Cups are traditionally fertile recruiting periods for churches as nervous fans pray for the right result.

Many churches are expected to put up screens in halls, and even in the main part of the church, for congregations to watch matches.

Football World Cup will be played in South Africa from June 11 to July 11.

Ashley Cole ‘tries it on’ with blonde in a toilet!

London, May 16 (ANI): Ashley Cole ruined his marriage with his infidelities and it seems that despite claiming to be heartbroken, the footballer hasn”t changed at all.

Blonde beauty Lucy Phillips, 26, has revealed on Facebook that she recently chatted to the football star in Swanky Sundays at the Supper Club in Notting Hill, West London, and how he tried it on with her in a toilet cubicle, reports the Mirror.

Lucy said: “I was walking past the guys’ toilets when I saw a big group of blokes gathered round. I looked in and saw Ashley Cole holding court, and I went in.”

She says that Cole ‘then tried it on with her,’ but insisted that she ‘laughed it off,’ telling him she wasn’t interested and, after a few minutes, she exited the toilet.

Not to be deterred, Lucy said that Ashley gave it one more shot later in the evening.

“A few minutes after I saw him in the toilets I was with my best friend and we walked past Ashley and his mates. They saw us and called us over. I sat on the arm of Ashley’s chair and we chatted. After about 10 minutes we decided to leave and enjoy the rest of our night,” she said.

She added: “I definitely didn’t kiss him – I would remember if I had. I’m not like that at all.” (ANI)

England boss Fabio Capello’s general manager asked Scholes to end his international exile, The Daily Express reports.

But the midfielder, who won his 66th and last England cap at Euro 2004, asked for time to think about his decision, then said he preferred to stay at home with his family.

The Welsh side beat the Foxes 1-0 in the first leg on May 9.

“Gary and I have had a little bet and it’s first leg to me,” the Sun quoted Bux as saying.

She added: “I’m totally behind Cardiff City. My side of the family has always been behind them and the banter has already started with Gary.” (ANI)

London, May 7 (ANI): Footballer Steven Gerrard’s wife Alex has warned fellow WAGs to ‘stop bitching about her marriage.’

English model Curran dismissed rumours that her relationship with Gerrard was on the rocks, when she arrived at a showbiz event with her hubby, reports The Daily Star.

Her friends have said that she is annoyed with her fellow WAGs who fuelled the split rumours.

“Quite a lot of other WAGs are bitching behind Alex’s back. She is just ignoring them but she’s not happy with it. Alex hates being called a WAG and hates what they stand for,” a close friend said.

“She is a model and journalist and doesn’t get the mentality that WAGs should stay at home or just go to lunch,” the friend added.

“They have nothing better to do than gossip and be bitchy. But when they meet it’s all air kisses and admiration for each other’s latest outfits. It’s all so false. Alex doesn’t like that lifestyle and doesn’t want any part of it,” the friend further said. (ANI)

According to The Sun, Messi told Football Punk magazine he was also messy in the kitchen and could only rustle up sausages or burgers.

“He”s an amazing footballer, but when it comes to his car and domestic chores, he”s a nightmare. He leaves stuff lying around everywhere and never really thinks to clear it up. I guess he is thinking about football all the time, ” a pal said. (ANI)

David Goodwillie chucked out of pub for ‘romping with fan’

London, April 29 (ANI): Scottish footballer David Goodwillie is said to have been thrown out of a pub after he was accused of romping with a fan in the ladies’ loo.

According to onlookers at the city’s trendy Lowdown bar, Goodwillie, 21, who has a girlfriend, looked “pretty flustered” when he was caught by staff doing up his zip as he left a toilet cubicle with the girl.

He was enjoying a night out with teammate Danny Swanson hours after their side’s 2-0 defeat by Celtic on April 25.

“Goodwillie and Swanson came into the bar and were in pretty good spirits. They were speaking to fans and having a few drinks with them,” the Sun quoted the insider as saying.

“Goodwillie was chatting away to one girl for a wee while. After a bit he went into the toilets and she followed five minutes later.

“At last orders the bar staff were trying to clear everyone out of the pub. They checked the ladies’ toilets and realised someone was still in one cubicles. One of the girl’s friends said it was her pal and she was upset.

“After five minutes the door eventually opened. The girl came out with Goodwillie who was doing up his zip. He looked pretty worked up and was told to leave by staff,” the insider added.

Dundee United and the player’s agent have both denied the accusations.

“David admits being in the pub but strenuously denies the other allegations,” a spokesman for the club said.

His agent, Jim Harkins, added: “There is no truth in this.”

But a spokesperson for Lowdown insisted the incident did take place.

“We had a producer who used to call me ‘The Brute’ and I’d play up to it by grabbing him.

Sexual health expert Dr Thom van Every said: “Distraction techniques may help men who are yet to learn better control.

“I”m very intrigued by the Emile technique – and I”m sorry for him because I don”t know why men think of him specifically.

Vinnie Jones beaten up by ex-boxer in ”wild-west” style brawl

London, April 26 (ANI): Footballer-turned-actor Vinnie Jones is said to have been beaten up by a former boxer in what has been described as a “wild west” style brawl.

Jones, 45, had been drinking with friends in Los Angeles” plush Chateau Marmont Hotel when the fight erupted between him and former fighter-turned-actor Tamer Hassan, 42.

According to onlookers, the two had been cracking jokes before Jones began making sarcastic remarks, and the exchange became heated when Hassan, suggested they discuss the matter outside.

“Neither Vinnie or Tamer were backing down,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“Minutes earlier they were joking but it appears Vinnie took things too far. When Tamer suggested it may be best to discuss their problem outside all hell broke loose.

“It was like something out of a wild west film. Fists were flying and at one point the two of them were grappling on the floor.

“If they hadn”t been pulled apart God knows when it would have stopped. There was a lot of shouting and swearing. It was bizarre.

“Vinnie took a good hiding,” the source revealed.

As the pair, due to be filming their latest film, ”Magic Boys”, writhed on the ground ”Tropic Thunder” star Justin Theroux stepped in to pull them apart.

Insiders said the fight had been brewing since the pair had a run-in over New Year. They claimed Jones refused to let the matter drop and approached Hassan to discuss it.

At one point they seemed set to make up, but Jones allegedly slapped Hassan”s outstretched hand away.

“My client informs me that he was subjected to an unprovoked attack. He regrets being put in the position of having to defend himself, but defend himself he did,” Hassan”s lawyer Eddie Parladorio said.

A spokesman for Jones said: “Vinnie was having a business dinner when he got involved in an altercation. Following the incident he returned to his table.

“Yesterday he was playing football with his Hollywood team as he always does on a Sunday,” he added. (ANI)

Vinnie Jones plans remake of cult soccer movie ‘Escape To Victory’

London, April 24 (ANI): British footballer-turned-actor Vinnie Jones is said to be planning a big-budget remake of cult soccer movie ‘Escape To Victory’.

Jones, 45, is hoping to use his contacts within the game to lure star players including David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rio Ferdinand, and Lionel Messi to join his next project.

The actor wants to remake the 1981 movie, which starred Michael Caine and an array of top footballers – including Pele and former England captain Bobby Moore – as World War II POWs who take part in a propaganda-led match.

Jones aims to update the film by setting it in Afghanistan or Iraq – and hopes interest in the remake will rocket after the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

“We’re in pre-production, and I’m in the process of buying the rights to the title off Paramount films, so hopefully you’ll be able to see it in cinemas by Christmas,” the Daily Express quoted him as writing in his column for Loaded magazine.

“I’ll be in it, of course, but I’ll also be producing it, which is more exciting.

“The names being bandied around include Henry, Rio, Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo, and Messi.

“I can tell you that I’ve approached some of the biggest names in world soccer… Is Beckham going to be involved? I certainly hope so,” he wrote.

And Jones has even devised a plan to accommodate Beckham’s Achilles tendon injury, which ruled him out of the World Cup.

“If Becks agrees, we’ll write it into the film that the enemy crock him, because he wouldn’t be fit for filming,” he added. (ANI)
