Ronaldo expects the goals to gush, like ketchup

South Africa (Reuters) – Cristiano Ronaldo said he is not concerned about his scoring drought with Portugal — because goals will come in a sudden spurt like ketchup shaken from a bottle.

Sports

The world’s most expensive player has not hit the net for Portugal for 16 months now, firing blanks in the World Cup qualifiers, but he is not worried about the goal drought.

“Goals, as a football legend once told me, are like ketchup,” Ronaldo told reporters on Sunday, without specifying who was the source of the comparison.

“Sometimes as much as you try, they don’t come out, and when they come, many come all at same time.”

Portugal fans will be hoping he ends that dry spell on Tuesday’s Group G opener against the Ivory Coast in Port Elizabeth.

“I hope so too… I’ve been working as hard as usual, and it is God that knows who works and deserves it, so in that sense I am completely tranquil,” he added.

While confident of getting back among the goals, the Portuguese captain said did not want to set any personal targets for the finals.

“To be the top scorer? No, I’ll give my best and the goals will appear, but I don’t want to set the bar at being the top scorer or the best player at the World Cup,” he said.

Ronaldo believes he had great debut season at Real Madrid after his move from Manchester United for a world record fee of 80 million euros ($96.30 million), scoring 26 goals in the league, but added he felt sad the team ended trophyless.

However, the 25 year-old, who had seemed in somber mood on the flight to South Africa and in the training sessions, appeared to be in good spirits, even joking with a journalist for speaking too quickly in Spanish.

His mood darkened again when asked about Portugal’s absentees, including winger Nani who flew home on Saturday after being ruled out with a shoulder injury earlier in the week.

“Some people say the important ones are those who are here. I disagree, because top players are missed by their national teams when injured. Of course (right back) Jose Bosingwa and Nani will be missed, but we have other solutions.”

One of those solutions might be coach Carlos Queiroz deploying Ronaldo as a roving single striker. Ronaldo said he can play in any of the attacking positions as he has shown on several occasions over the last few years.

Some of those were with his former Manchester United team mate Wayne Rooney who he said played very well in England’s 1-1 draw with the United States on Saturday.

Regarding Steven Gerrard, England’s scorer in that match, Ronaldo said he thought very highly of the Liverpool player, but declined to comment on talks linking him to Real Madrid.

Ronaldo added that Argentina’s Lionel Messi, with whom he denied having a rivalry, had also played very well even though he did not score in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Nigeria.

“On the pitch, I was one of the best in my position,” the former PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona striker said last week during a visit to Brazil”s Congress with members of his Brazilian Socialist party (PSB).

Hurst backs England to reach World Cup semis, but not win the trophy

London, May 18 (ANI): Football legend Sir Geoff Hurst has backed England to reach the semi-final of the 2010 World Cup, but is not convinced that the Three Lions are strong enough to lift the trophy.

Hurst is confident coach Fabio Capello will guide the team to the semi-finals for the first time since Bobby Robson did it at Italia 90, but is not sure that the team would be able to emulate the success Sir Alf Ramsey’s men enjoyed in 1966.

Hurst, who scored a hat-trick as England beat Germany 4-2 in the final 44 years ago, said: “You’ve got to be very careful with being negative about football, but I just think we’re a bit short at the moment.”

“The goalkeeping area’s a problem. I’ve spoken to Gordon Banks and Peter Shilton, two of the best keepers we’ve ever had, and they have concerns. Up front, Emile Heskey seems to be the No1 choice to partner Wayne Rooney. However, he hasn’t played much this year, so there are concerns in some key areas,” The Sun quoted Hurst, as saying.

“Having said all that, I think the squad and the management will expect to at least get to the semi-finals. The draw is very favourable and we’re quite capable of beating most teams. When you get to the semis, who knows what will happen as that’s when you come up against the Brazils and Spains.

“It’s all about getting the squad right and keeping your best players on the field. That’s in the lap of the gods through injuries and suspensions, but I think we’re going to the World Cup better prepared than we’ve been for some time,” Hurst said.

Capello’s initial 30-man squad for South Africa includes a number of players who have struggled with injuries this season. (ANI)

Jake Gyllenhaal wants to play American football legend Joe Namath

London, May 14 (ANI): Actor Jake Gyllenhaal wants to play American football legend Joe Namath in the sportsman’s biopic.

The ‘Brokeback Mountain’ is apparently working on the screenplay for the film along with studio bosses.

“I would love to play Joe Namath. I”ve been working on it for a long time, trying to develop that story,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.

He added: “We got to get it right, got to get the extraordinary story perfect if we”re going to do it. But it would be a dream to play him.?” (ANI)

I won’t quit Barcelona for any English Premier League side: Messi

London, Apr 30(ANI): Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has disappointed his fans in England by revealing that he will not play in the Premier League because his heart belongs to Barcelona.

When asked if he could ever envisage playing in England, Messi said: “I don”t even think about that. Barcelona is my life, they have brought me to where I am today and I could not leave,” The Mirror quoted Messi, as saying.

“I could not leave, I don”t want to leave. I know the Premier League is very good and I watch the matches on TV when I get the chance. I admire the strength of the players, it is very English – they play to the end, with a lot of spirit and determination, and the fans are very good and fair.”

“But for me, I cannot see myself playing in England because my heart is with Barcelona, always. They are a great club – I love the club, the people, everything,” he added.

The remark is also likely to call off potentially the biggest transfer stampede in history.

Earlier, several Premier League clubs, including Manchester City, were willing to sign Messi.

Considered as one of the best football players of his generation and frequently cited as the world”s best contemporary player, Messi has received several Ballon d”Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21 and won both by the age of 22.

His playing style and ability have drawn comparisons to football legend Diego Maradona, who himself declared Messi his “successor”. (ANI)

Kaiser fears Rooney’s red-hot form

London, Mar 25 (ANI): German football legend Franz Beckenbauer has said that Manchester United ace striker Wayne Rooney’s superb form is a cause for concern for Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich face Manchester United and their 33-goal striker in Tuesday night’s Champions League quarterfinal.

‘The Kaiser’, who is the president of Bayern Munich, said: “Rooney is playing better than ever and we at Bayern will fear him when we play United.”

“We have to stop him – but no one has been able to do that very often this season,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Reebok boss Owen Coyle admits it will be a big relief if Alex Ferguson rests his star striker for Saturday’s Premier League clash at Bolton.

Coyle said: “If you’re asking me whether I am glad Wayne Rooney might not be in the team, then of course I am.

“I’d rather not face him – so would any manager be glad of the chance not to face him.” (ANI)

Italian police seize Maradona’s diamond studs

Rome, Sep 19 (ANI): Beleaguered football legend Diego Maradona had to hand over his diamond studs to police as part payment for the millions he owes the Italian tax authorities.

Italian officials paid the holidaying Argentinean coach a visit at the luxury hotel he was staying in and seized the earrings worth nearly 4,000 pounds, Sky News reports.

Police claimed that Maradona still owes some 20 million pounds, dating back to his seven-year stint at the Italian club Napoli, where he frequently failed to pay income tax.

After fleeing Buenos Aires on Monday following Argentina’s four defeats in five matches of 2010 World Cup qualifier, Maradona, 48, is currently staying at a spa in the town of Merano in north-eastern Italy, where he is trying to lose weight.

Italian authorities had seized two of his Rolex watches worth 11,000 pounds in 2006, when he was staying near Naples.

In 2005, they seized the money he was to receive for taking part in a TV dancing show.

Four years earlier, he was met by 20 police officers as he got off a plane in Rome.

Italy’s Supreme Court ordered the ex-footballer to pay 36 million euros in unpaid taxes.

According to the association of Italian taxpayers, Maradona still has 22.4 million euros to pay.

Recently, Brazilian legend Pele took a blow at Maradona, saying he feels another Argentine-born player, Alfredo di Stefano, is the best player ever.

“Maradona was a great player, but he could not kick with his right foot and did not score goals with his head.

The only time he scored an important goal with his head, it turned out he had used his hand,” Pele said referring to Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ goal against England in 1986 World Cup. (ANI)

Franz Beckenbauer hopes England will host 2018 WC finals

London, July 6(ANI): Football legend Franz Beckenbauer, who is in the FIFA committee that picks the venue for 2018 and 2022, gave hopes of England hosting the 2018 football World cup.

“England would be ready tomorrow. As a UEFA member, I would like to see it in Europe but it is an open race,” The Sun quoted Beckenbauer, as saying.

“England could host it tomorrow because they have the stadiums, the infrastructure, the fans, everything. But there are a lot of other different countries bidding. Let’s wait and see,” the ex-West Germany skipper added.eckenbauer believes 2018 would be Europe’s turn, as the 2010 tournament is scheduled for South Africa and the 2014 finals in Brazil.

FIFA will name the 2018 hosts in December 2010, and the continent that will hold the 2018 finals will be unable to bid for 2022.

Meanwhile, Beckenbauer rates Australia as a strong contender for the 2022 finals.

“I think they (Australia) have a good chance because the World Cup has never been to Australia. Australia’s a beautiful country, a beautiful continent,” said Beckenbauer. (ANI)

Australia has good chance to host FIFA World Cup, says Beckenbauer

London, July 5 (ANI): German football legend Franz Beckenbauer has dropped a strong hint that he could back Australia’s bid to host a FIFA World Cup.

Beckenbauer is a member of the 24-man executive committee of the world football governing body, which will decide the hosts of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in December next year.

Asked about the 11-nation race to host the event, he said: “It’s too far away, it’s more than one year to go.”

But when pressed on the chances of the most popular sporting tournament in the world heading Down Under, he gave a strong hint that his vote may be among the 13 needed, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

“Australia? I think they have a good chance because the World Cup’s never been to Australia,” Beckenbauer said. “Australia is a beautiful country, a beautiful continent.”

Earlier, he told a media conference for Adidas, for which he is an ambassador, that Europe’s football decision-makers want the World Cup to return to Europe in 2018, with South Africa hosting next year and Brazil in 2014.

“It will be Europe’s turn. As a UEFA member, I would like to see it in Europe but it is an open race as to which country might get it,” Beckenbauer said.

He said if the FIFA executive committee decided the 2018 would be in Europe, then “England could host it tomorrow because they have the stadiums, the infrastructure, the fans, everything.”

“But there are a lot of other different countries bidding. Let’s wait and see,” he said. (ANI)

Andy Murray hopes to become the David Beckham of tennis

London, June 22 (ANI): Britain’s No.1 player Andy Murray hopes to become the David Beckham of tennis, as he bids to deal with the huge pressure of being a sporting superstar.

Murray has the same management team as football legend Beckham, and when the pair launched a campaign recently to increase awareness of malaria, they travelled together to meet Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

“When you start out as a professional, you look to keep the same friends, the same people you have always had around you and just try to be true to yourself and do things that are important to you,” the world No. 3 said.

“When you start changing as a person and getting an inflated opinion of yourself and having a big ego, it becomes a problem. It happens a lot in sport nowadays and David’s done a great job of not letting all the fame and pressure get to him,” The Sun quoted Murray, as saying.

“David seems a very nice guy. It was a bit strange when we went to Downing Street – but to get the chance to meet the Prime Minister was very, very nice. That’s one job I definitely would not want to do,” he said.

Murray has two physical-fitness trainers and also travels with physio Andy Ireland, who even gives the player acupuncture if he is suffering from any aches or strains.

“In terms of the physical stuff, I started doing that 18 months ago when I started working with the new fitness trainers and was just travelling with them every week. I was training during the tennis and it made a huge difference over the year,” Murray said.

“Because of doing that, I was able to start doing the 400 metre and 200 metre runs faster and better – and lifting heavier weights. It wasn’t one thing specifically in the gym I was doing it was pretty much every part of the body I was working.

“I now feel like I can last longer in matches, whereas before I might have played a five-set match in a Slam and felt fine but my recovery wasn’t as good. I’m just recovering better from tough matches now,” he added. (ANI)

Gazza signs ‘nutritious’ deal with UK’s health food store

London, May 15 (ANI): Football legend Paul Gascoigne a.k.a Gazza has signed a ‘nutritious’ deal with UK’s health food store Holland and Barrett.

The shop executives had seen the England midfielder sporting ripped abdominal muscles on last month’s Match of the Day.

And were keen to help him stay fit, and stay away from the drugs and booze.

Gazza is being sponsored with nutrition products, including his favourite strawberry protein powder by the health food store bosses.

“I have been training hard and keeping fit and strong on a healthy diet to keep me mentally and physically fit – and taking nutritional supplements to help aid my recovery,” the Daily Star quoted Gazza as saying.

“My problems are never going to be behind me. But at the moment, I don’t want to take the booze and I don’t want to be using again,” he added.

A Holland and Barrett spokesman said: “We have been supplying him with some of his favourite nutrition products to aid his sports regime.” (ANI)

Thief buys car with Gazza’s credit card

London, May 9 (ANI): Football legend Paul Gascoigne is fuming after a thief used his credit card to buy a car.

The fraudster left the ex-England star with a 10,000-pound bill for the black Mercedes, reports The Sun.
Gazza’s card was used to pay the deposit and monthly installments on the motor.

Gascoigne, 41, didn’t spot the payments on his monthly bills last year because he was hooked on booze and living in hotels.

Once he had kicked the bottle he checked his finances and saw that he was paying for a car he knew nothing about.

The car is registered in Gazza’s name – even though he never bought it and has never driven it.

The furious former Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder called in his lawyers and is planning to inform police about the credit card fraud.

His legal team is still trying to find out if someone he knew is responsible. (ANI)

Gary Lineker buys £4k pad for Danielle Bux’s half-brother

London, Apr 20 (ANI): Football legend Gary Lineker has purchased a 400,000 pounds bungalow for fiancée Danielle Bux’s paralysed half-brother.

“Danielle is still heartbroken by what happened. Gary feels he wants to do everything he can to help him get the best out of life,” the Sun quoted a friend of the couple as saying.

The 48-year-old former England striker will also recruit carers for Kaid Yusef Mohamed, Bux’s half brother, who broke his neck jumping a wall as he fled nightclub thugs two years ago.

Gary, 48, and Kaid 24 have teamed up to design the new home in the family’s hometown of Cardiff.

“Kaid has learnt to speak again and Gary wanted to help his recovery by giving him a home of his own after all he has been through,” said a fami;y friend. (ANI)

Danielle Bux’s mum nicked for shoplifting

London, Apr 19 (ANI): Danielle Bux’s mother has been arrested for shoplifting from a B and Q store.

Dopey Kim Lewis, mother of the Hell’s Kitchen star and fiancée of football legend Gary Lineker, along with her friend stuck her own homemade price labels on a trolley-full of items to pretend their prices had been slashed at the store.

However, cashiers immediately caught the theft.

“We still can’t figure out how on Earth they thought they’d get away with it. As attempts to steal go, it was hopelessly amateurish and clumsy. There’s DIY and there’s DIY,” the Mirror quoted a worker at the DIY store as saying.

However, things got worse for Lewis as she was caught possessing drugs by the police.

“They went up and down the aisles loading up a trolley with goods they liked the look of,” said a worker at the store in Culverhouse Cross.

“Then they tried to cover up the real prices with their own fake labels – with ridiculously low prices printed on them. They seem to have been unable to get their heads round the fact that modern tills use barcodes, not prices.

“Our security guards let them think they were getting away with it, then stopped them as they tried to leave the building. The manager arrived and he called the police, while the rest of us tried not to laugh,” the worker added.

Lewis and friend Devine were charged with theft, possession of amphetamines and “going equipped to commit a theft”.

They appeared before Cardiff magistrates on April 6, where they both pleaded guilty.

JPs fined them 30-pound prosecution costs each and gave them each a nine-month conditional discharge. (ANI)

Michael Sheen urges Clough’s family to see his flick ‘The Damned United’

London, Mar 20 (ANI): Hollywood actor Michael Sheen has urged late Brian Clough’s family to watch his flick ‘The Damned United’, in which he plays the English football legend.

Michael, who plays Clough in the flick based on a book chronicling his 44 days, spent managing soccer team Leeds United in 1974 before he was fired.

Although Clough’s family plans to boycott the flick in protest against the way he was portrayed in the novel, Michael has informed them that the flick version has adopted a different attitude towards Clough.

“It’s a much more affectionate and respectful look at Brian. I hope they get to see it because I can understand their fears. I know they weren’t happy with the book but I think the film is a very different animal,” the Daily Star quoted Michael as saying.

“We felt that any film that was going to be about Brian Clough would have to be something that showed why people had so much affection and admiration for him. I think the film does service to that and I hope that if any of the family get to watch it they can make their minds up after that,” he added.

Michael told the family that he had put his heart and soul into the character, and that they would be happy to see his portrayal of Clough.

“I had to get into Brian’s mind. I had to read everything I could read, watch everything, listen to everything, talk to people about him – and just live with that for a few months, make it seep in and then eventually try and make a connection with the person and go from there,” Michael said.

“He’s an amazing character. He’s such a complicated man, he had a lot of different sides to him, so it was quite demanding,” he added.

Clough became one of the most respected managers in English soccer in the late 1970s and 1980s, when he led Nottingham Forest to league and European championship successes.

He died of cancer in 2004, aged 69. (ANI)

Gazza leaves rehab after ‘freezing’ treatment

London, Mar 06 (ANI): Football legend Paul Gascoigne, aka Gazza, has left rehab after undergoing the freezing treatment called ‘Cryotherapy’.

Gazza had checked into a facility to deal with his alcoholism, and underwent ‘Cryotherapy’-in which the body is frozen upto – 125C to invigorate the patient by pumping blood around the body.

The patient is supposed to wear thermal pants to protect from frostbite.

“During the sessions, Gazza has to keep moving or his heart could stop. It lasts three minutes before he is led to a heated exercise room to use a bike and get his temperature up,” the Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“Unlike massage or aromatherapy, cryotherapy is not a particularly relaxing or pleasurable experience,” the source added.

The latest treatment pumps blood around the body at a faster rate, and increases the release of feel-good hormones.

Gazza checked out of ex-footballer Tony Adams’ Sporting Chance clinic in Hampshire after spending three months there, and has stayed off the booze and put on over a stone.

“Paul is feeling like a new man. He has also been using sunbeds a lot as these make him look and feel better about himself. He says he feels exhilarated and revitalized after a freeze session, and sees it as a miracle cure to beat his mood swings,” the source added.

Established in Japan, Cryotherapy activates temperature receptors in the skin, sending signals to the brain. (ANI)

Gazza wants to turn ‘Ironman’ to exorcise drink and drug demons

London, Feb 9 (ANI): Former England football legend Paul John Gascoigne, popularly referred to as ‘Gazza’, wants to take part in the gruelling Ironman Triathlon event, in a bid to conquer his drink, drug and depression problems.

Playing in the position of midfield, Paul’s career included spells at Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Middlesbrough, Everton, Lazio and Rangers. He was also capped 57 times for England.

According to a report in the Daily Star, Gazza has spent the last month in intensive rehab therapy at Tony Adams’ Sporting Chance clinic, and his friends say that a change in regime has inspired him to focus on fitness instead of the high life.

One friend of the former midfielder said that Gazza reckons the gruelling Ironman Triathlon event is just the challenge he needs to become a “changed man”.

“Paul has been getting himself in great shape while he’s been in rehab. Nearly every day, he’s been in the gym and it’s got him thinking about taking on a challenge,” said the friend.

If Gazza goes ahead and enters the contest, which is organized by the World Triathlon Corporation every year, he will have to tackle a 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride and then a marathon.

“We’re not just talking about a 10k run or something. The Ironman would be the ultimate!” the friend said about the triathlon.

According to sports science experts, former England ace Gazza, 41, is likely to have a strong fitness “base” from his days on the pitch. Even if Paul hasn’t done that much exercise in recent years, his body will remember the demands he once placed on it,” one of the experts said. Because of that muscle memory, he stands a good chance of recovering his fitness very quickly,” he added.
Paul has been staying at Champneys Forest Mere health farm in Hampshire during his spell at the clinic. (ANI)

Gazza’s ex-wife gets immense public support post emotional documentary

London, Jan 12 (ANI): Sheryl Gascoigne, ex-wife of Fallen football legend Paul Gascoigne a.k.a Gazza, has revealed that she has received immense support from people who have suffered like her family.

Sheryl says she has been swamped with letters and calls since the emotional documentary about her family called ‘Surviving Gazza’ was aired on television.

And she described her elder son Mason as being a “hero” for teenagers in the same position and for attracting massive public support.

‘Surviving Gazza’ showed Sheryl and her kids, Bianca, 22, Mason, 19, and Regan, 12, desperately trying to help Gazza quit booze.

It showed Sheryl, 43, inviting him back into their home and then following him to Portugal in a bid to bring him back from a round-Europe bender.

And Sheryl says that she has received a lot of support and appreciation received for highlighting the issue.

“The response has been absolutely overwhelming and that’s enough for me,” the Sun quoted her, as saying.

“It’s highlighting the problem for other people and we have been thanked by so many but I am sure there will be people out there who still want to knock us.

“But, in general, we have had so much positives. People have thanked me and children have even been writing to us,” she added. (ANI)
