Maoists drop guns, take deep breath at Sri Sri ashram

Bangalore, June 5 — Spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, who has mesmerised millions in India and abroad, now has some unexpected followers – the Maoists.

Seventeen rebels visited his ashram near Bangalore on Friday to seek his help in removing negative emotions and shunning violence, the founder of the Art of Living Foundation said on Saturday.

The Maoists came from Jharkhand, Bengal, Bihar and Chhattisgarh and participated in several yogic sessions, said Ravi Shankar, who escaped unhurt when a gunman fired at his convoy last week. The guru said he was helping the Maoists get off the path of violence and accept the olive branch offered by Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

The Maoists are believed to have got in touch with the Art of Living Movement through peace and meditation camps organised by the foundation to motivate ultras to quit violence.

The foundation, however, did not disclose if these Maoists had given up arms before participating in the yoga sessions.

Jaeger sales holding firm, online booming

(Reuters) – Sales at British luxury fashion brand Jaeger have grown strongly, shrugging off recent turmoil in financial markets, helped by a booming online business which is set to double in size over three years.

Chief Executive Belinda Earl told the Reuters Global Luxury Summit that Internet sales were set to grew to 10 percent of total revenues by 2013, fueled by a revamped website linked to social networking portals, and surging demand from overseas.

She also saw opportunities to expand the 126-year-old Jaeger brand into more accessories and areas, such as childrenswear, as well as new markets, such as Russia.

Demand for luxury goods has bounced back from a deep recession. But analysts fear the debt crisis in Greece, and ensuing plunge in equity markets, could hit consumers spending again.

Last month Jaeger reported a 12 percent rise in sales for the first few weeks of its financial year, starting March 1, and Earl said that trend had continued despite economic uncertainty.

“We’ve not read anything into the last two or three weeks. In fact our trading has maintained,” she said, noting particularly strong demand in Hong Kong and online.

Jaeger recently started delivering to 29 countries from its website, and Earl said that had had a dramatic effect.

“We’ve seen a quantum increase in international sales in the last month … and I think that will only grow,” she said, adding the online business was likely to overtake Jaeger’s biggest store in terms of annual sales in about two years.

Luxury goods firms have been slower to embrace the Internet than other retailers, concerned it would not be able to offer the high-end service their customers expect.

However, Earl said the technology had now moved far beyond simply pasting pictures onto a screen and brands could harness the Internet to strengthen their credentials with consumers.

Bigger rival Burberry (BRBY.L) said last week it had over one million followers on social networking site Facebook, and that its own social media site artofthetrench.com had received over seven million page views since its launch in November.

Earl said Jaeger’s new website this autumn would offer similar social networking capabilities, as well as a separate section for its new Boutique range.

EXPANSION

A former head of department stores group Debenhams (DEB.L), Earl is credited with taking Jaeger from English county shows to international catwalks, as well as broadening the brand into new product areas, such as homewares, sunglasses and fragrance.

Earl said the brand, which is majority-owned by Chairman Harold Tillman, would not be immune to any fresh downturn, but that its improvements in design and diversification meant it was well placed to cope.

The immediate focus was on this autumn’s launch of Boutique, a new, slightly cheaper range aimed at younger women.

However, the firm would continue to look at new product areas, Earl said, and in particular believes it can build sales of accessories to around 20 percent of the group total over the next two years, up from about 12 percent currently.

It would also look at launching a childrenswear range in the coming years, she added.

International expansion will continue too.

Jaeger announced a deal last month to enter the United States in Nordstrom department stores, as well as plans to expand further in Britain and the Middle East.

Earl said the group had longer-term ambitions to grow in Russia, and had struck a partnership deal with local luxury goods retailer Jamilco which would aim to open a store in around two years time and up to ten over the next 5-10 years.

Jaeger was also looking for a new partner in Japan, after a licensing deal there expired last year, and for possible partners in mainland China, but had no plans to enter the Indian market for the time being, she said.

Sri Sri Ravishankar escapes bid on life

Spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravishankar on Sunday escaped bid on his life when an unidentified gunman shot at his car when he was returning after delivering a discourse, an ashram official said.

“I am absolutely safe,” the 54-year-old founder of the Art of Living said shortly after the incident.

One of his devotees sustained a minor injury on the thigh with the bullet brushing past, ashram spokesperson Charu said.

The incident took place around 6.15 PM when Ravishankar was returning to his ‘Kutir’ by car after addressing a gathering at the ‘Satsang’, she said.

“We usually have a satsang from four PM every Sunday till around six where even people from neighbouring villages join us. Sri Sri had addressed those gathered at the Satsang and completed his discourse and was returning to his ‘kutir’ by car when the incident occurred,” she said.

Sri Sri Ravishankar, who has a wide following all over the country and abroad, where he has set up centres of his organisation, said he had gone ahead with his discourse even after the incident.

Karnataka Home Minister V S Acharya said central range IG Kamal Panth has been sent to the ashram to inquire about the incident. “There is no problem… everything is peaceful there,” he said.

The spiritual guru told a TV channel that he had not received any threat earlier.

Sri Sri Ravishankar has popularised ‘Sudarshan Kriya’, a powerful breathing technique in India and overseas. Meanwhile, Sri Sri Ravishankar urged his followers not to panic or be perturbed by the shooting incident.

In his message to the followers, he said, “Ahimsa Pratishthayaam Tat Sanidhav Vaira Taygah” (For one who is established in non-violence, all kinds of hostility ceases”, spokesperson of the ashram Aswin Nandkumar said.

“The guru has asked his followers not to panic or worry”, he said.

On beefing security measures at the ashram, another spokesperson said the spiritual guru generally does not prefer tight security and prefers to mingle and interact with his followers. But after this incident, the issue might have to be looked into, he said.

Now, Twitter, Facebook to save the world!

The Obama Administration, which is making maximum use of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter in governance, feels these are “effective tools” that can enhance diplomacy.

Top officials of the Obama Administration are seen twitting round the clock and various wings of the US government have now dedicated team for sites like Twitter, Facebook and Flickr.

“We think that 21st century diplomacy involves a combination of capabilities – one, having the Secretary go around the world and talk face-to-face to leaders, but also have the ability to communicate with populations around the world through a variety of means, including social media,” State Department spokesman P J Crowley said.

He said the US believed that the use of Facebook and Twitter in governance would be worth emulating by other countries.

Crowley, who tweets very frequently, says he has some 2,000 followers.

“We recognised from the outset that these are effective tools that enhance diplomacy. The Secretary (of State Hillary Clinton) has spoken about this. Under Secretary Judith McHale is leading this effort.

“We not only have the ability through social networking to communicate with governments, most importantly, we have the ability to communicate with people,” he said.

“…that is a powerful tool, and around the world we’re using it to clarify the position of the United States, but we’re also using it to help solve challenges that – in the places that the Secretary has visited,” Crowley noted.

“Absolutely, we are using these tools quite effectively. People are able to follow the Secretary and her travels at State.gov,” he said.

Noting that half of the population in Indonesia is on Facebook, Crowley said that becomes an important tool in terms of the emergence of democratic societies and accountable governments so that people can use social media to communicate to a government.

“We are working in Mexico, for example, where people can use cell phones and texting to communicate to the government where they have concerns about corruption.

“So we obviously see that technology allows the opportunity to – it both empowers people, it hold – makes governments more accountable. We think this is an important dynamic for global society in the 21st century,” Crowley said.

Thai premier scraps early election proposal

Bangkok, May 13 (DPA) Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has scrapped an offer to hold an early election this year after anti-government demonstrators refused to end their two-month-old protest, officials confirmed Thursday.

Abhisit last week proposed to hold an election Nov 14, in a bid to appease the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), whose supporters are commonly known as red shirts, which has been staging protests in Bangkok since March 12 to try to force a dissolution of parliament.

A precondition for the early polls was that the UDD must end its protest at Ratchaprasong Road in the heart of Bangkok’s commercial district, which the red shirts have occupied since April 3.

‘It is fitting that the premier has rescinded the offer to hold an early poll as the red shirts have refused to disperse,’ Korbsak Sabhavasu, the prime minister’s secretary-general, told reporters Wednesday evening.

The UDD leadership initially welcomed Abhisit’s proposal, but they have refused to disperse at Ratchaprasong Road until Suthep Thaugsuban, deputy prime minster in charge of security, faces criminal charges for ordering a crackdown on their followers April 10 that left 25 dead, including 19 protestors, five soldiers and one foreign journalist.

The condition was partly met when Suthep Tuesday acknowledged charges against him at the Department of Special Investigation, which is looking into the crackdown, but the UDD has insisted Suthep must be interrogated, charged and granted bail.

If Suthep is granted bail, the UDD leadership argues it would set a precedent for them to be granted bail as well once they end their protests and turn themselves in to the authorities.

The 24 top UDD leaders are afraid to quit their protest site because they face arrest once they step outside the barricades on various charges, including breaking the emergency law, terrorism and criticising the monarchy.

The UDD leadership is also split, with some of them willing to quit but others opposed to ending the protest until they have met their original goal of forcing an immediate dissolution of parliament, sources said.

Abhisit and other members of his Democrat Party have blamed former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, one of the de-facto leaders of the UDD although he is living in self-exile, for being behind the demonstrators’ reluctance to end their protest.

‘Everyone knows that Thaksin does not want to stop but wants to ruin all aspects of legitimacy,’ deputy leader of the Democrat party, Kraisak Choonhavan, told the Bangkok Post newspaper.

The government has postponed a plan to cut electricity and water to the Ratchaprasong neighbourhood out of deference to people, other than protestors, living in the upscale area.

‘Authorities are now working on technical ways to reduce the grid to the area with a minimal impact on non-protestors,’ government spokesman Panitan Wattanyakorn said.

Obama, Karzai play down US, Afghan differences

Washington, May 13 (ANI): President Barack Obama and his Afghanistan counterpart Hamid Karzai on Wednesday sought to play down differences on various issues between the two countries during a press conference at the White House after a bilateral meeting on Wednesday.

The highly choreographed joint news conference in the White House East Room saw Obama making a few allusions to the existence of corruption and drug trafficking in Afghanistan, but he added that “progress that has been made” to halt corrupt acts.

The two leaders painted a picture of an Afghan-American relationship that was cordial and full of shared goals.

“We are reaffirming our shared goal to disrupt, dismantle and defeat Al Qaeda and its extremist allies,” Obama said.

With a smiling Mr. Karzai standing by his side, the New York Times quoted Obama, as saying: “With respect to perceived tensions between the U.S. government and the Afghan government, let me begin by saying a lot of them were simply overstated.”

Obama said that he supported Karzai’s efforts to reach out to some Taliban followers, adding that as long as they renounced their ties to Al Qaeda and extremism, the government could “reintegrate those individuals into Afghan society.” (ANI)

Genoa’s Serie A home match with AC Milan on Sunday will be played behind closed doors after local authorities had a late change of heart about possible violence.

India’s star batsman Sachin Tendulkar, revered by millions of fans in his home country and across the world, has joined the ranks of the “Twitterati” on microblogging site Twitter.

The 37-year-old opened his account sachin_rt on Tuesday with the post: “Finally the original SRT is on twitter n the first thing I’d like to do is wish my colleagues the best in the windies.”

Tendulkar, nicknamed the “Master Blaster”, is recovering from injury and not part of India’s squad taking part in the World Twenty20 tournament in the Caribbean, which began last week.

But the record-breaking cricketer, considered one of the sport’s greatest ever players, said he was struggling with the new technology, although he managed to post a photograph of himself.

Print media followers make healthier choices

Washington, May 5 (ANI): A new research claims that people who turn to print media for their daily dose of health news are at a greater advantage than those who use digital media for health information.

“I think much is to be learned about health information-seeking behaviors and their relationship to the adoption of health behaviors in various demographic groups,” said Nicole Redmond, who led the team of researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

“One of the challenges in this area is the rapidly evolving nature of information technology. Telecommunications such as text messaging and Internet access through smart phones and social networking sites have created a very different communications landscape in a very short time frame,” Redmond added.

The survey asked participants to chose their preference of information source – mass media like TV, print media and Internet or interpersonal sources, such as family and friends, community organizations and health care providers.

Post analysis, Redmond and her colleagues found that print media, community organizations and health care providers showed the strongest associations. Earlier surveys in 2005 and 2007 had shown similar trends.

“I was not entirely surprised by the role of community organizations, but I did expect that friends and family would have shown a significant association with some health behaviors as well,” said Redmond.

The study appears in the June issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. (ANI)

Times Square bombing is a reaction to US drone attacks: Qureshi

Islamabad, May 5 (ANI): Pakistan Foreign Minister Mahkdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi believes the attempted Times Square bombing is a reaction to U.S. drones targeting Taliban followers along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

“This is a blow back. This is a reaction. This is retaliation. And you could expect that. Let”s not be naive. They”re not going to sort of sit and welcome you eliminate them. They”re going to fight back,” CBS News quoted Qureshi, as saying.

Qureshi was speaking as police in Pakistan police confirmed the arrest of two people, one of whom, Tauseef Ahmed, is believed to have travelled to the U.S. to meet Faisal Shahzad. Both were arrested in Karachi, Pakistan.

CBS News has also learned that Shahzad may have spent at least four months training at a terrorist camp – raided in early March by Pakistani forces.

Though Pakistan is a key ally to the U.S., the country is still seen as a fertile training ground for militants.

Faisal Shahzad comes from a wealthy and educated family. His father is a retired high-ranking Air Force officer. But the failed plot will no doubt put new pressure on Pakistan to crack down on insurgents within its borders. (ANI)

FIFA match related stress could cause heart attack

London, May 3 (ANI): Football match related stress could trigger off a heart attack say doctors, especially during this year’s World Cup.

Ardent football followers get so excited while watching the match that the overexertion could lead to a cardiac arrest.

The stress factor is not just because of the outcome of the match but also due to the nail-biting moments during the match.

German Doctor Ute Wilbert-Lampen studied 4,279 heart attacks in or around Munich after the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany.

“The result is not important. Rather, the vital factor is how stressful and tense the match is,” she told Daily Star.

Professor Hoosen Vawda, of the South African KwaZulu-Natal University, told fans to stay detached at the FIFA World Cup tournament, which kicks off on June 11.

“The event is meant to be enjoyed in the spirit of sportsmanship, not to die for,” he advised. (ANI)

Oz PM Kevin Rudd ‘following’ porn on Twitter

London, May 3 (ANI): Aussie Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was left red-faced after it was revealed that he has been following porn sites online – all thanks to his inadvertent Twitter settings.

In addition to having his wife, Therese Rein, as a supporter, he has been accidentally following several seedy sites, including a porn blogger, an online adult superstore and a handcuffed bare-breasted woman.

A spokesman for Rudd has admitted that a Twitter automated programme made the prime minister”s account auto-follow those who followed him.

“While the Kevin PM Team try to monitor the follow backs, with more than 900,000 followers this is a very large task,” Sky News quoted the spokesman as saying.

Although it normally requires a Twitter account holder to view another person”s profile before following, an option allows this to be done automatically.

This can be helpful for people with large followings—Rudd follows around 200,000 Twitter users through his KevinRuddPM account.

Industry experts warn that users should be aware that social media networks such as Twitter do have potentially dangerous implications.

According to the Herald Sun newspaper, other profiles followed by the premier include sex show webcams and a gay resort in Thailand”s Phuket region.

Rudd has been a keen user of social media and has used Twitter to reveal new policies and even the impending wedding of his son. (ANI)
