US to launch media war in AFPAK

Washington, Aug.22 (ANI): The U.S. State Department is establishing a new unit for countering militant propaganda in Afghanistan and Pakistan, in an effort to win the war of ideas against Islamist extremists.

According to the New York Times, President Barack Obama’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Richard C. Holbrooke, will direct the effort within the State Department, which will focus on the use of cell phones, FM radio and video.

Local journalists are to be trained at State Department expense (with a proposed budget of 150 million dollars) to attack and denigrate militants and their messages.

According to Holbrooke, the United States is losing the information war in Afghanistan and Pakistan as far as the Taliban is concerned.

“We are losing that war. The Taliban have unrestricted access to radio, which is the main means of communication. We can’t succeed, however you define success, if we cede to people who present themselves as false messengers of a prophet, which is what they do. We need to combat it,” he said. (ANI)

Samsung solar powered phone – Samsung Guru E1107 was recently launched in India. The main feature of this model is dual charging. While the main source of power is electricity, the Solar Guru allows users to charge the batteries anywhere the sun is shining.

The solar charging alternative will save its users electricity, which means they also save money. This is also particularly helpful when you are away in areas where electricity is unstable. An hour of charging under the sun can give you 5 to 10 minutes of talk time. This may not be much, but when your battery is dead and you need to make an important call, just even for a few minutes, this can be a real life-saver.

The Solar Guru packs in its frame measuring 105.2 x 44.15 x 16.4mm the following features — FM radio, MP3 ring tones, games, torch light and 1MB of memory. It also has a Mobile Tracker, which sends out an alert message during an emergency or when the SIM card is changed.

US will not support a military coup in Pakistan, says Holbrooke

Washington, May 6 (ANI): The United States on Tuesday quashed all speculations of a military takeover in Pakistan, saying that it would be terrible if it happened.

S special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke touched on a number of sensitive issues in his testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“Our goal must be unambiguously to support and help stabilise a democratic Pakistan headed by its elected president, Asif Ali Zardari. We have the highest strategic interests in supporting this government,” he said.

Asked how Washington would react if the military toppled an elected government in Pakistan, The Dawn quoted Holbrooke as saying: “We are strongly opposed to that … it will be terrible.”

He revealed that Pakistan had used F-16s for bombing extremist targets in Bajaur and Swat.

He opposed linking US aid to allowing access to Dr A.Q. Khan and indicated that the US might be working on a program with Pakistan to block FM radio broadcasts by pro-Taliban clerics.

Holbrooke also used his testimony to convey a message of support for Pakistan, its government and the military.

“Pakistan’s of such immense importance to the United States, strategically and politically. We do not think Pakistan is a failed state,” he said.

The US envoy insisted it was important for the US lawmakers also to understand that while Pakistan was under ‘tremendous social, political and economic stress’, and it was wrong to describe it as a failed state.

On the issue of nuclear proliferation, Holbrooke refused to browbeat Pakistan.

When a lawmaker suggested that the US aid to Pakistan should be linked to allowing American lawmakers to question Dr Khan, Mr Holbrooke said it would be a mistake to do so.

“I have raised this issue with the government of Pakistan and they told me that it happened during the previous government,” he said.

Holbrooke said that while he supported seeking further assurances from Pakistan on this issue, “linking it to US aid will not help”. (ANI)

Tension grows in Swat as Taliban goes on looting spree

Mingora, Apr 28 (ANI): Tension in the Swat Valley is fast growing as the Taliban continues armed patrolling and threatened a group of lawyers and recalcitrant militants. It also captured a telephone exchange in Sataal and looted two NGO offices in Saidu Sharif while preparing for a showdown with security forces.

Meanwhile, US spy planes flew over Matta, Kabal, Charbagh and Khwazakhela as Maulana Fazlullah was chairing a meeting of his commanders at an undisclosed location in the valley to devise future strategy.

US drones, locals said, hovered over Matta, Khwazakhela, Kabal and Charbagh areas but did not carry out strikes. The locals fear a Waziristan-style attack by the drones.

Speaking on FM radio channel, the deputy chief of the militants, Shah Dauran, threatened lawyers with action for speaking against the Taliban.

He said lawyers Sher Zaman, Muamber, Ali Haidar, Zahoor Iqbal, Muhammad Ismail, Noor Muhammad, Hazrat Bilal and others “are making fun of the Shariat-e-Muhammadi and the Taliban” and his fighters would soon take action against them.

“Whoever will speak against the Taliban, we will take action against them,” The News quoted him, as saying.

Dauran also warned those Taliban fighters who were flouting the Taliban chief’s orders. His warning confirmed reports about fissures within the Taliban.

Taliban continus armed patrolling on roads in Khwazakhela, Charbagh and Peshawar, which triggered off apprehensions of another military operation in the valley, of which people have become weary. (ANI)

Worried Pak dispatches paramilitary troops to Buner to counter Taliban infiltration

Peshawar, Apr.23 (ANI): At least eight platoons of paramilitary troops have been dispatched to North West Frontier Province’s (NWFP) Buner district to counter the heavy infiltration of the Taliban.

According to sources, eight companies of the Frontier Constabulary (FC) have been sent to the district to safe guard government buildings and bridges, which the government fears the Taliban could attack.

Meanwhile, after Mullah Fazlullah’s announcement over his illegal FM radio channel, the patrolling by the Taliban in the district’s shopping areas has subsided, the Dawn reports.

Local residents said that extremists have restricted their movement to Pir Baba, Sultanwas and Zaga areas of the district.

Following the government’s approval to establish sharia law in the region, militants from the Swat Valley entered Buner in large numbers raising fears that the Taliban would establish its writ in the region too, and that the accord had only emboldened their wish to expand their control. (ANI)

Australian firm to install device that turns off appliances and ration electricity

Sydney, March 29 (ANI): An electricity company in Australia is planning to install a new electronic control box in homes, which would allow it to switch off individual appliances, such as air conditioners and plasma TVs, to ration power use.
According to a report carried out in news.com.au, the new device, made by Australian firm ETSA, would go in the meter box and remotely read meters, turn power on and off, report outages – and, if the customer agreed, ration power to an individual home.

It is controlled by an FM radio signal and on a house-by-house basis.

ETSA chief executive Lew Owens said that the new device, now being trialled, could prevent the kind of load-shedding blackouts across entire suburbs that Adelaide experienced in January, by reducing demand across the city.

ETSA wants to introduce the system some time after 2010 and could eventually roll it out into all homes in Adelaide.

It follows the successful trial by ETSA of a less sophisticated “peak breaker” box attached to air conditioners in Mawson Lakes and Glenelg, which was used to turn off refrigerated air conditioner compressors in periods of peak demand during heat waves.

“We can turn off the compressors and leave the fan circulating the air,” said Owens. “We turn it off 15 minutes in every hour by an FM radio signal and the customer doesn’t know it’s happened,” he added.

The trials found that peak electricity demand during heatwaves could be reduced dramatically by the control boxes, with Mawson Lakes homes’ power consumption cut by about a third, and Glenelg’s by about 20 per cent.

Owens emphasised that while ETSA planned to put the new boxes in all homes, customers would choose whether to allow it to be used to ration power.

However, he added that people who did not take this option might find they would lose all power when power demand was running at peak levels.

According to ETSA, the box is sophisticated enough to control specific equipment in the home. (ANI)

Taliban accepts Pakistan’s offer of ‘permanent ceasefire’ in Swat

Mingora (Pakistan), Feb. 21 (ANI): Taliban and Pakistani officials have agreed to a permanent ceasefire in the Swat Valley, a senior government official said on Saturday.

“They have made commitment that they will observe a permanent ceasefire and we’ll do the same,” said Syed Mohammad Javed, the Commissioner of Malakand.

Swat Taliban commander Maulana Fazlullah was expected to announce the ceasefire on the illegal FM radio owned by Taliabn. Taliban spokesman Muslim Khan told Reuters that Fazlullah would make an announcement on the radio shortly.

“I can’t say what he would say but there would be good news for people of Swat,” Khan said.

The ceasefire announcement comes a day after TNSM chief Sufi Muhammad met with Fazlullah in a bid to convince the Taliban to disarm under ‘sharia-deal’ between them and Pakistan Government.

According to the sharia deal’ between Pakistan Government and the Taliban, the Taliban is required to end their bloody campaign after introduction of Islamic ‘sharia courts’ in the Malakand and Kohistan districts of Swat.

International community had criticized the deal saying the deal effectively cedes Swat to the Taliban and could embolden other militant groups challenging Pakistan’s shaky secular government.

The US President’s special envoy for Pakistan and Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke hadcriticized the deal by saying that the US was troubled and confused about what happened in Swat because it was not an encouraging trend.

North Atlantic Treaty Organization and Britain too had severely criticized the accord, fearing the ceasefire may give Taliban militants time to train and come up stronger.

A similar deal in the Swat last year collapsed after a few months and was blamed for giving time to insurgents to regroup. (ANI)

Symonds selected to play in Queensland Vs Western Australia match

Brisbane, Jan.26 (ANI): Under fire Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds has been selected to play for Queensland in their match against Western Australia at the Gabba later this week.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Symonds will bat at number four in a match that is being seen as his one and only chance to prove his fitness and form before the selectors sit down to name their Australian squad for next month’s three-Test tour of South Africa.

Despite the high stakes of the Shield match, the Queensland selectors aren’t about to make any concessions for Symonds, who has struggled up the order early this season.

The swashbuckling Test No.6 failed in his four bats at No.4 for the Bulls at the seam-friendly Gabba, scoring 5, 5, 26, 0 as he was exposed to the swinging new ball.

Despite the run of outs he was still recalled to the Australian team for the first Test of the summer against NZ after completing his Cricket Australia rehabilitation program, which followed his “gone fishing” axing.

Skipper Ricky Ponting again wants Symonds back for the South African tour if he is fit but his most recent drama, labelling New Zealand wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum as a “lump of s___” on FM radio, has added to the doubt surrounding his tenuous position.

Cricket Australia is expected to charge the dreadlocked Queenslander with a code of conduct breach as soon as Tuesday but he’s expected to cop a fine rather than suspension.

Queensland chief selector Ray Phillips acknowledged Symonds had spluttered high up the order against the swinging ball, and the in-form Lee Carseldine presented as a strong option at No.4.

But both Phillips and coach Trevor Barsby said Symonds would stay at second drop with Carseldine, who averaged 100 in the Twenty20 competition, at No.5.

“We’re still not sure if he is going to play. We haven’t heard anything so it’s business as usual,” Phillips said.

Barsby said Symonds, who will not bowl against WA, would have a “burning desire” to prove himself ready and able to return to Test cricket with a big score at the Gabba.

“It would be in Andrew’s best interests to come out in this Shield game and score as many runs as he can to show he’s still a dominant force,” said the coach.

The second-placed Bulls have also recalled spearhead Ashley Noffke from a lingering back problem, while fellow paceman Chris Swan has shrugged off a groin injury.

Strapping left-arm bolter Scott Walter, 19, is set to make his first-class debut if Ryan Harris isn’t released from the Australian one-day squad.

Queensland: Chris Simpson (captainRyan Broad, Nick Kruger, Martin Love, Andrew Symonds, Lee Carseldine, Nathan Reardon, Ashley Noffke, Chris Hartley, Ryan Harris, Chris Swan, Scott Walter (12th man to be named). (ANI)

Taliban lists 43 ‘wanted’ leaders, ministers for punishment under sharia

Peshawar, Jan.26 (ANI): Minutes after Pakistani political leaders appealed the Taliban to lay down their violent methods in Swat valley and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) to solve their differences through dialogue, the Taliban has announced a list of 43 people – including former and incumbent ministers – who they have declared ‘wanted’ and liable to punishment under the Taliban law (sharia).

The announcement was made by Mullah Fazlullah, the Talibani cleric, on his FM radio channel, The Daily Times reports.

“These 43 people on the list are Taliban’s enemies, and would be arrested or killed by our men. If arrested, they would be produced before the Taliban courts, which will punish them in line with the ‘sharia’,” Fazlullah’s voiced screeched over the Talibani radio frequency.

The self-styled cleric also announced ‘amnesty’ for some political leaders and influential people who have stopped opposing Taliban in the valley, locals who had heard the announcement said.

The blatant announcement comes only two days after a provincial minister from the Awami National Party (ANP) and two members of the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) Assembly visited the Swat valley to express solidarity and support for the people of the region against the rising extremism. (ANI)
