Seven-year-old schoolgirl stumps Michelle Obama with immigration googly

London, May 21 (ANI): US First Lady, Michelle Obama was put in a spot when a seven-year-old girl asked whether her mother, an illegal immigrant would be deported by the Obama administration.

The incident occurred during a visit by the First Lady to the New Hampshire Estates Elementary School just outside Washington, when the little girl told the her that her mother believed “President Barack Obama was taking everybody away that doesn”t have papers”.

When Michelle Obama responded that “this was something we have to work on”, the girl replied: “But my mum doesn”t have papers.”

Michelle Obama replied: “We have to fix that. And everybody”s got to work together in Congress to make sure that that happens.”

The seemingly innocuous question has cast the spotlight on the Obama administration’s immigration policies

According to The Telegraph, Obama supports the idea of granting the country”s estimated 12 million illegal immigrants, mostly from Mexico, a “path to citizenship”. (ANI)

Michelle Obama hails 1.5 trillion calorie cut efforts by food manufacturers

London, May 18 (ANI): US First Lady Michelle Obama has succeeded in getting US food manufacturers to cut 1.5 trillion calories from their products for her anti-obesity campaign.

Sixteen corporations, which make up 25 per cent of the American food supply chain, have agreed to trim a total of one trillion calories by 2012 and 1.5 trillion calories by 2015.

“They”ve agreed to reformulate their foods in a number of ways, including by addressing fat and sugar content, by introducing lower-calorie options, and by reducing the portion sizes of existing single-serve products,” The Telegraph quoted Mrs. Obama as saying.

“This commitment represents a major step forward to providing Americans with healthier choices so that they can choose to lead healthier lives.

“In the weeks and months to come, we expect to hear more announcements regarding specific steps on reducing sugar, fat and sodium in the foods that our children eat,” she said.

Mrs. Obama has been tirelessly campaigning against obesity, promoting exercise and highlighting healthy eating and diet.

The companies who signed up will incorporate changes in their food products – from changing various ingredients to changing portion sizes of individual snacks, through the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation, a coalition of firms and trade organizations.

“The First Lady has shown tremendous leadership in calling for national action to end childhood obesity,” said David Mackay, chairman of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation and the chief executive of Kellogg Company.

“Through this effort, the companies… will provide consumers with additional healthier food options that help them achieve and maintain a healthy diet.” (ANI)

INTREVIEW – Philippines’ Marcos fights to get wealth back

Former Philippine first lady Imelda Marcos, who won a seat in the lower house of Congress in this week’s elections, said on Thursday she was confident of winning back much of the wealth seized from her family.

Marcos, known for her large collection of jewellery and 1,200 pairs of shoes, said she would not accept a compromise deal but would pursue her claims through the courts.

“I am sure that the things that are ours and truly ours will come back,” the 80-year-old told Reuters by phone from the northern Ilocos Norte province. “Truth and justice sometimes grind exceedingly slow, but grind exceedingly well.”

Imelda’s late husband Ferdinand was president for nearly two decades, ruling with an iron fist before he was ousted in an army-backed popular uprising in 1986. He was accused of amassing more than $10 billion while in office.

His successor, democracy icon Corazon “Cory” Aquino set up a search and recover agency which seized more than $5 billion worth of Marcos’ alleged ill-gotten assets. The government also offered deals to the Marcoses to settle litigation over some of the remaining wealth.

“Marcos was not a thief,” said Imelda, who is returning to Congress after serving one term in 1995-1998.

“I never wanted any compromise agreement. There will be no compromise because truth, honour and justice are non-negotiable,” she said. “The truth will set us free because we are on the side of the truth and of God. And, if you are on the side of truth and God, nobody can touch you.”

Imelda said she decided to run for public office because she does not want to enter into any compromise with government on the allegedly ill-gotten wealth and on the family’s demand for a hero’s burial for the deposed dictator.

“The number one role and responsibility of government is justice,” she said. “Even in the case of the Marcoses, there is no justice. Even the dead Marcos is still waiting for an honourable burial. I think it’s about time they do the right thing.”

Imelda’s eldest daughter, Imee, also won the Ilocos Norte governorship, and her only son, Ferdinand Jr, is likely to win a seat in the upper house of Congress.

Powerful clans continue to play a key role in politics in the Philippines. Senator Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, who is set to succeed President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, belongs to a political family that has ruled the northern Tarlac province for decades.

Imelda said she would pray for Aquino’s success “for the sake of the Filipino people”.

“You need a real expert there who has done a lot of public service,” she said. “I’ll also pray harder that he succeeds in his campaign of eliminating corruption because then, truth will come out and we’ll be vindicated.”

When Bruni and Sarkozy kept a head of state waiting while they had sex

New York, May 8 (ANI): A new book has revealed that French First Lady Carla Bruni bragged to US First Lady Michelle Obama about how she and her husband French President Nicholas Sarkozy kept a head of state waiting while they had sex.

“Bruni wanted to know if, like the Sarkozys, Michelle and the President had ever kept anyone waiting that way,” the New York Daily News quoted Alter as writing.

“Michelle laughed nervously and said no,” he stated.

“The Promise”, a book by Newsweek senior editor Jonathan Alter, is due out from Simon & Schuster on May 18. (ANI)

Carla Bruni behind Louvre rock festival cancellation?

London, April 29(ANI): French First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy used influence to cancel the Louvre rock festival, fearing it would overshadow a series of concerts aimed to raise funds for Aids sufferers, it has emerged.

The Ministry of Culture refused permission to hold the open air-gig in the courtyard of the Louvre Museum, due to take place on 18-19 June, citing it “unsuitable” and potentially unsafe for such a “sensitive” and historic site.

However, a French investigative newspaper has claimed that the President’s wife, who is an official Aids ambassador for the UN, made the call.

Apparently, the singer did not want the attention to be driven away from the Aids victims devoted concerts, scheduled to begin six days after the Louvre show.

The Culture Ministry also reasoned that a rock show would be “unwelcome” on 18 June, since it marked the 70th anniversary of General de Gaulle””””s radio appeal from London for a defeated France to continue the fight against Nazi Germany.

However, French newspaper Le Canard Enchainé claims Bruni-Sarkozy had made the objections directly.

The Inrockuptibles magazine, which organizes the festival, had even appealed to her to re-think, but received a negative response. (ANI)

London, April 17 (ANI): A French pop singer has won 3,000 pounds in damages from a TV news station that alleged a liaison between him and France’s first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.

Benjamin Biolay had sought 20,000 pounds from the France-24 news channel for the “serious harm” he said he suffered from the allegation, reports the Daily Express.

Biolay’s lawsuit was one of two brought after internet rumours emerged last month that President Nicolas Sarkozy, and his wife were having extra-marital affairs.

France-24 carried the information in its international press review.

Biolay’s lawyer, Isabelle Wekstein, said she was satisfied with the court decision. (ANI)

Barack and Michelle Obama double their income to $5.5m in 2009

London, Apr 16 (ANI): The credit crunch did not really touch the Obamas, as the US President and wife Michelle earned 5.5 million dollars in 2009, which is more than twice their income in 2008.

e White House released Barack Obama’s tax return on Thursday- the day all Americans have to file their tax returns.

And it showed that the Obamas earned 5.5 million dollars last year and paid nearly 1.8 million dollars in federal income tax, reports The Telegraph.

In 2008, the Obamas made just under 2.5 million dollars.

The White House said that the increase was due to increased sales of Obama’s books.

Obama’s books ‘Dreams From My Father’ and ‘The Audacity of Hope’ were on sale in 2008, but after he became the President sales have skyrocketed.

Obama, whose “principal business or profession” was listed in his tax return as “author”, and the First Lady gave 329,000 dollars to charities. That included 50,000 dollars each to CARE and the United Negro College Fund.

The President also donated his 1.4-million dollar-Nobel Peace Prize award to 10 different charities.

The president’s official annual salary is 400,000 dollars, which was raised from half that amount in 2001. (ANI)

Poles queue for hours to mourn president, first lady

WARSAW, April 14 (Reuters) – Poles queued in the rain for several hours on Wednesday morning to pay respects to the late President Lech Kaczynski and his wife, Maria, whose coffins were displayed at the presidential palace.

The coffins went on public viewing on Tuesday after Kaczynski, his wife and 96 other passengers died in a plane crash on Saturday in western Russia.

“They loved one another so much, it was obvious when they lived and now they lie here together,” one mourner said.

On Wednesday morning the line stretched through much of the street to a nearby square and back to the presidential residence where people laid flowers and knelt in front of the coffins covered with Poland’s red and white flags.

“We just thought we should be here with our compatriots. It’s a historic moment,” said another man.

Since Saturday tens of thousands of people have also been lighting candles in front of the palace forcing security to fence the area.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk and members of his government will also hold an honour guard by the coffins for one hour later on Wednesday, local media reported. (Reporting by Gabriela Baczynska)

Barack Obama’s in-laws thought Michelle would ‘eat him alive’

London, Apr 7 (ANI): When Barack Obama first met his in-laws, they thought that their daughter Michelle would “eat him alive.”

The revelations have come from memoirs written by the First Lady’s brother Craig Robinson, called A Game Of Character.

The first couple of the United States met when Michelle, now 46, was asked to mentor Barack, two years her senior, at Chicago law firm Sidley Austin.

Basketball coach Craig, 47, said that although Barack got the approval from both his future parents-in-law, neither thought that he would be a suitable match for their feisty daughter.

After meeting the future president, Michelle’s mum Marion’s first impression was a half-hearted.

“Well, he’s tall,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying at the time.

On the other hand, her dad Fraser seemed slightly more impressed, adding: “Not a bad looking guy, either.”

But, despite the fact that the Robinsons seemed to accept their daughter’s new beau they still didn’t think the relationship would last.

And Fraser reportedly joked: “Yep, she’ll eat him alive.” (ANI)

Michelle Obama most popular US First Lady ever

Washington, April 1 (ANI): U.S. First lady Michelle Obama is more popular than her predecessors Laura Bush and Hillary Rodham Clinton were after a year in the White House.

The President’s wife’s approval ratings are blooming at 78 percent, higher than her recent predecessors at similar points in their husband”s presidency.

Comparatively, Laura Bush rated at 74 percent, and Rosalyn Carter rated at 59 percent. Hillary Clinton rated at 58 percent and Nancy Reagan at 57 percent.

Michelle has boosted her image by focusing on issues such as childhood obesity and encouraging innovative ways for kids to get exercise.

“I love the way that Mrs. Obama has stressed the simple things that people can change to make a huge difference in their lives,” CBS News quoted Katherine Tallmadge of the American Dietetic Association, as saying.

“Things like eating more vegetables. Having a garden and being more physically active.

“They may seem like simple things but study after study show they”re effective things,” Tallmadge added. (ANI)

Carla Bruni not keen on 2nd term for husband Sarkozy

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is not keen to see her husband President Nicolas Sarkozy run for a second term in office, worried that the job might damage his health, the French first lady told Figaro Magazine.

“As a spouse, I do not wish for it. Maybe I am afraid that his health will be affected. Maybe I want to live what time we have left together in a certain peace,” she said.

“But whatever the situation and whatever my husband decides, I will quietly accept it,” she added, according to an advance copy of the interview released ahead of Saturday’s publication.

Sarkozy’s father Pal also suggested the president might find life more relaxing as a private citizen.

“He will be the one to decide,” Pal Sarkozy told the daily Le Parisien. “But personally, I think he would have a much more peaceful and much more comfortable life if he didn’t run.”

“This is an opinion of a father who loves his son … and who would like to see him happy,” he said.

Sarkozy came to power in 2007 and is expected to run for a second term in 2012, although he has yet to confirm this.

However, his poll ratings are hovering near record lows and his UMP party suffered a humiliating rout at a regional ballot this weekend, raising doubts for the first time over whether he would stand for re-election if his fortunes did not revive.

WHIRLWIND ROMANCE

Bruni and Sarkozy married in 2008 after a whirlwind romance, but there was wild media speculation earlier this month that their marriage was in difficulty after a French blog reported rumours that both Bruni and her husband were having affairs.

“I despise so-called journalists who use blogs as if they were a credible source,” Bruni told Figaro Magazine.

Bruni once described herself as a “man tamer” and has had a number of affairs with intellectuals and rock stars, including Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton.

She has often been quoted as saying, in a 2007 interview, that she was “crazily bored by monogamy”, but the former supermodel said she treasures her marriage to Sarkozy.

“He is someone who protects me from myself and the world. He is maybe the first man who protects me,” she said.

“The intimate part of our life is hard to describe without immodesty,” she said, adding: “It is the first time that I give as much as I get.”

A successful singer-songwriter with a string of albums to her name, Bruni said that she was working on a new record and that she missed performing.

She also confirmed that she was set to appear in a Woody Allen movie, due to be filmed in Paris this summer, but she does not yet know what role she will play.

Carla Bruni doesn’t want President hubby to run for a second term

London, Mar 26 (ANI): Carla Bruni is wishing French President Nicolas Sarkozy doesn’t run for a second term in 2012 because the pressure could take a toll on his health.

In a recent interview with Madame Figaro magazine, the French First Lady, 42, also said that she despised media that published unsubstantiated rumours this month about her marriage with the President.

The singer-cum-model said that the “media-political world” was brutal towards her husband.

“The balance, happiness and health of my man are serious subjects. I am going through this moment of life with a lot of worry,” Times Online quoted her as saying.

When asked if she wanted Sarkozy, 55, to run for the next presidential election in April 2012, she said: “As a wife, I don’t really want him to. Perhaps I am afraid he will let his health go. Perhaps I wish to live what time we have left in some peace?”

Sarkozy has suffered one of the worst weeks of his time in office, raising speculation about the future of his presidency.

However, the only sign of his poor health only came last summer when he fainted after jogging. (ANI)

The US First Lady, along with Sasha, 8, and Malia, 11, watched the matinee performance of “Memphis” at the The Shubert Theater.

“They didn”t make an announcement but when they came in, everybody noticed and started taking pictures. Then people started clapping too and there was a standing ovation for them,” the New York Daily News quoted surprised audience member Terri Mertz as saying.

“I knew she was tall but I didn”t realize she was that tall!” Mertz added.

The audience was later warned at intermission against taking any more pictures of the First Kids. (ANI)

Woody Allen might drop ‘risky’ Carla Bruni from his film

London, Mar 19 (ANI): After finally getting Carla Bruni’s nod to act in his film, Woody Allen is now considering leaving the French First Lady for his next flick.

The legendary director, 74, last year convinced the wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy to take a role in ‘You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger’ after hailing her as “wonderful”.

But now, it seems Allen has had a change of heart, and he has admitted that he might drop the 42-year-old supermodel-turned-singer because of the “risk” of her duties as France’s First Lady interfering with filming, due to start in Paris this year.

The news comes a week after a frenzy of rumours that both she and Sarkozy were having affairs.

According to reports, she had been seeing a pop star, Benjamin Biolay, and that he was romancing French junior minister Chantal Jouanno.

“Carla Bruni is not a woman who earns her living as an actress. She is a First Lady. She could be taken away at any moment by other duties, like a political crisis or an important event. I have to take account of the risks that there could be, and hiring her is far from certain,” the Daily Express quoted Woody as saying on Swiss TV this week. (ANI)

Michelle Obama donates inaugural gown to educational facility Smithsonian

Washington, March 10 (ANI): Michelle Obama has donated the white gown she wore at the inauguration to the Smithsonian, saying it helped the public “connect with a moment in history in a very real way.”

During her appearance at the Museum of American History, Mrs Obama said she was humbled but also “a little embarrassed by all the fuss being made” over “the dress.”

“Like many of you, I’m not used to people wanting to put things I’ve worn on display…So, all of this is a little odd, so forgive me,” the Politico quoted her, as saying.

However, the First Lady did admit the significance of her dress and others worn by former Presidents’ wives.

She said: “Each gown places us right in the moment and makes us wonder about the intimate details of that evening, like how did she feel in the dress?

“Did her feet hurt in those shoes? How many times did her husband step on that train?”

Looking at the gown, which she hadn’t seen after the inauguration, Mrs Obama said it reminded her of the “freezing cold” day her husband assumed office.

She said: “That day was so hectic for us.

“And I remember the inaugural parade, and how the president and I stood, and we waved until every last band walked by.”

And she revealed she got ready for the inaugural balls later that night in less than an hour.

“Ladies, if you can believe that,” she said.

Mrs Obama recalled: “I remember how just luscious I felt as the president and I were announced onto the stage for the first of many dances. And I’ll cherish that moment for the rest of my life.”

She added that it is “one of the most tangible things I have left to remember that day.

“And that’s why it will always hold a special place in my heart,” she said.

Jason Wu, the gown’s designer said: “The countless hours that you can see that he spent sewing this piece made my night even more special, and now I am proud that millions of visitors will be able to see just how talented this young man is.” (ANI)
