Airborne laser to shoot ballistic missile as part of flight test

London, September 12 (ANI): Soon, the Airborne Laser (ABL), built into a customized Boeing 747, is ready for flight tests, in which it will try to shoot a ballistic missile.

According to a report in New Scientist, the US Department of Defense’s Missile Defense Agency (MDA) has developed the ABL.

The ABL aims to focus a beam of laser energy in the megawatt range for several seconds onto a missile at a “militarily significant distance” – more than 100 kilometres.

So far, the laser has only operated at near full power on the ground. On August 18, it was fired successfully from the air, but at reduced power.

That, however, was no mean feat, as aircraft vibrations play havoc with the precisely aligned optical components needed to generate a laser beam.

Firing at full power poses other challenges as well.

At powers high enough to destroy missiles, any surface contamination or tiny flaw in the laser optics can absorb so much heat that they crack or shatter.

High-power laser beams also heat the air they pass through, creating perturbations that can disperse or divert the beam.

To counteract those effects, the ABL uses an adaptive system that senses atmospheric changes along its path and makes optical adjustments to compensate.

To test that system, the MDA plans a series of increasingly powerful shots at modified ballistic missiles loaded with sensors to measure the distribution of laser power on the target.

Engineers will assess each shot’s performance and use the results to fine-tune the adaptive optics.

Once this is done, the MDA will test the laser again in varying conditions, and attempt to destroy actual missiles.

The first of these tests is planned to take place late this year, with two more to follow in early 2010, according to an MDA spokeswoman. (ANI)

Is Al-Qaida’s central leadership weakening?

London, Sep 11(ANI): Al-Qaida, known for its rigorous training camps for terrorists to carry out attacks around the World, is now undergoing a massive change as tales from six captured Al-Qaida terrorists belonging to immigrant communities in France and Belgium reveals another facet of the organisation.

According to intelligence reports, it is claimed that all the flashy videos shown to prospect recruits were a “trick”, which served a dual purpose -”to intimidate enemies and to attract new recruits” The Guardian reports.

However, the reality had a different picture for them, they had to spent months in Pakistan’s rugged frontier zones and had nothing more than basic small arms training, some physical exercise and religious instruction.

They were also expected to pay around 1,000 dollars for their equipment, weapons and accommodation.

The disappointments for them continued, as they did not get any opportunity to meet supreme head Osama Bin Laden, nor was there any real need for them as fighters in Afghanistan.

Training provided to them involved little live firing and weeks of religious instruction from a junior cleric.

Though the six were forbidden to venture outdoors, one of the six did eventually participate in operations against US forces. (ANI)

BJP top brass meets Advani, immediate change in party leadership ruled out

New Delhi, Aug.29 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) top brass met senior leader L.K. Advani at his residence late on Friday night for almost two hours.

Among those who met Advani were Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley, Venkaiah Naidu and Ananth Kumar.

Sources claimed that despite RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat chalking out a succession plan for the BJP, there are no immediate plans to ring in changes in the leadership.

The RSS succession plan is reported to have been discussed during the meeting.

BJP leaders were reluctant to reveal to the media what exactly transpired at the meeting claiming that it was a routine meeting.

The other issue that came up for discussion was Jaswant Singh’s charge that Advani knew about and was in favour of exposing the cash for vote scam that hit Parliament in July last year, as the UPA Government was seeking a vote of confidence.

Firing a fresh salvo, Singh said Advani was “at the centre” of the cash-for-votes scam drama enacted in the Lok Sabha last year.

“It’s a great sense of pity. Here was a man who was consumed by an ambition to be Prime Minister, and that desire made him commit so many mistakes. Do you know this whole wretched thing of money for votes is a classic example of wrong decision-making and it’s extremely troubling that he did not stand up and say no? Advaniji was at the centre of this whole drama,” he told Outlook magazine.

Singh was referring to the episode when three BJP MPs displayed bundles of currency notes totaling Rs.10 million, claiming they were being offered as bribe to support the government.

Singh said the facts were clear and he stumbled on to the whole thing when Sudheendra Kulkarni, a former aide of Advani, brought a very strange looking fellow to his house.

“I was not consulted but I was appalled that Advaniji was giving the MPs the go ahead to display money in Parliament,” he said adding that Advani had two choices — either to take the money to the Speaker or into the House. But he told the MPs to display the money in Parliament.

The options left for Advani are to break his silence and publicly clarify his stand to take on his detractors or else resign as Leader of Opposition and end his political career, leaving the BJP to battle the crisis.

Advani could also stay on till BJP presidential election in December to chart out a comprehensive succession plan.

It is clear that the fault line in the BJP have widened with a number of senior leaders rebelling against the party high command. With some much infighting there seems to be three distinct camps within the BJP – the Rajnath Camp, the Advani Camp and the Vajpayee Camp. (ANI)

Indian farmers along Pakistan border in Punjab resent restriction

Amritsar, Aug 28 (ANI): Anguished Indian villagers in Punjab, whose farms lie across the fencing along the Pakistan border have staged a protest over problems faced in tilling their fields.

The protest was staged under the banner of the Jamhuri Kisan Sabha (Democratic Farmers Council) and the Border Area Sangharsh (Struggle) Committee.

Hundreds of agitating farmers gathered in Bhindi Saiydan village of Amritsar on Thursday, saying that the Border Security Force has enforced stiff restrictions, giving them little access to till their land and tend the crops.

“We are facing a lot of difficulties. The gate opens at 9 in the morning and around 1 to 2 pm in the afternoon, they ask us to go back. If any farmer has work left, they even ask those farmers to leave,” said Balbir Singh, a farmer.

“We also demand that close relatives of these border farmers be given employment opportunities,” said Satnam Singh Ajnala, president of Jamhuri Kisan Sabha.

Amritsar and Tarn Taran districts alone have about 170-kilometre long border with Pakistan.

India began setting up a long fence along the disputed border with Pakistan in the mid-90s to stop militant groups and illegal immigrants from sneaking into Indian territory.

Pakistan initially objected to the fence, but India hurriedly set it up at least 2-4 km away from the border line in some places, saying they were coming under heavy firing from across the border.

As a result, vast areas of fertile land in Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, were left outside the fence, leading to protests from Indian farmers. (ANI)

Mumbai, Aug 26 (ANI): Judge M.L Tahiliyani who is presiding over the 26/11 trial expressed surprise on Wednesday over Maharashtra Home Minister Jayant Patil’s statement that the verdict will be delivered on September 15.

“Your Home Minister makes a statement that the case will be over by September 15 but his officer has still not submitted documents in the court,” Judge Tahiliyani told to Special Public Prosecutor Ujwal Nikkam.

Nikkam, however, informed the court that he had personally spoke to Patil on the matter and Patil had clarified that the media had misquoted him.

He had remarked about recording of evidence are expected to be over by September 15 and not about the delivery of judgement, Nikkam said quoting Patil.

‘I have no discord with Flintoff,’ says Strauss

London, Aug.19 (ANI): England cricket captain Andrew Strauss has refuted suggestions and allegations of him having a discord with all-rounder Andrew Flintoff because of the latter’s omission from the fourth Ashes Test at Leeds, saying both players understood each other well, and would be going into the fifth and final Ashes Test with all guns firing.

Stating that the England camp was in harmony, and adding that there was great excitement going into the Oval Test, Strauss said: “I’ve spoken to ‘Fred’ about the whole situation. We both know where each other stands on it – and it’s just not an issue between us.”

“At this stage of a tour, maybe people try to create things out of nothing – from in our ranks, there is not an issue there at all,” The Independent quoted him, as saying.

Strauss said that he understood Flintoff’s disappointment over not playing the fourth Test.

“You can understand why he’d be disappointed. It’s his last couple of Tests, so he’s dying to play. I think he understood the situation in terms of what we needed from him. With the doctors’ advice, we felt he wasn’t going to be in a position to give us that for that Test match – on the back of a lot of bowling previous to that,” Strauss said.

Asked about Flintoff’s well-being, Strauss reported: “It looks very promising. He’s had some good time off; the swelling has gone down; we’re happy with what he’s done – things are looking pretty good. He got it through (in the nets) as he normally does. We’re very encouraged by what we’ve seen so far.

“He’s obviously a massive player for us. We’re very fortunate to have a guy of that quality in our side – especially one that tends to ‘up’ his performances against Australia. Going into a must-win game like this, I’m far more comfortable as captain seeing his name on the team sheet,” he added.

“We all want him to go out in a blaze of glory,” Strauss confirmed. (ANI)

Males’ sperm travel faster when females are attractive

Melbourne, July 10 (ANI): A new piece of research on red junglefowl, an ancestor of chickens, has shown that males can adjust the speed and effectiveness of their sperm, based on whether they find their mate attractive.

Published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the study adds to the growing body of evidence that males from promiscuous species, including humans, increase the chances of fertilisation when the female is deemed to be attractive.

“Female attractiveness is determined by the expression of a sexual ornament – the comb – which is phenotypically and genetically correlated to the number and mass of eggs females lay,” ABC Science quoted co-authors Dr. Charlie Cornwallis, of the University of Oxford, and Dr Emily O’Connor, of the Royal Veterinary College, as saying.

For their study, the researchers collected natural ejaculates from dominate and subordinate red junglefowl males housed at the University of Stockholm.

They reveal that the males had either just mated with attractive or unattractive females.

The researchers later separated the sperm from the seminal fluid, and analysed the quantity and characteristics of both.

“There was a strong relationship between sperm velocity and the volume of the ejaculate sperm came from,” write Cornwallis and O’Connor, adding that males allocated “larger ejaculates to attractive females”.

Although the researchers have yet to unravel the mystery behind it, they have an have an intriguing theory.

“Males may alter the velocity of sperm they allocate to copulations by strategically firing their left and right ejaculatory ducts, which can operate independently,” they say.

Thus, according to them, stimulation from sexy, attractive females leads to the double firing.

“Furthermore, differential firing of left and right ejaculatory ducts may contribute to how males strategically change the number of sperm in their ejaculates, a phenomenon that is widespread, but for which the mechanism remains unknown,” they say.

The researchers now hope that future studies will better identify how males adjust the sperm and seminal fluid in their ejaculates, and how this affects fertility rates. (ANI)

Poppy cultivation in Kashmir

Jammu, July 9 (ANI): Satellite images of Jammu and Kashmir taken by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) have led to shocking revelations.

Tracts of forest areas and uncultivated patches of land in the region are found to be under illegal poppy cultivation. This in turn has exposed the presence of a drug mafia with terror links.

The Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau, Jammu zone, disclosed information here on Tuesday.

The NCB’s images show that southern parts of Kashmir such as Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Banihal, Udhampur and also the border belt in Poonch and Rajouri regions are being extensively used for poppy cultivation.

Armed with these satellite images, the NCB is gearing up to conduct a physical surveillance to identify the exact location of the narcotics cultivated fields so that they can be destroyed at earliest.

“This satellite imaging is taken for the first time in the areas of Jammu and Kashmir and some other states are also included in this operation… The imaging operation has already been completed. Now that the areas are spotted by the satellite, we have to conduct surveillance physically,” said M K Sharma, Zonal Director, NCB, Jammu.

The NCB believes that the involvement of terror groups cannot be denied in poppy cultivation.

“Some militant groups have their involvement in this illicit cultivation because during 2007 a destruction operation was conducted in the area of Anantnag and Pulwama, where some firing from that area was met, and the police forces also retaliated to the firing. So we cannot rule out that the firing was by the militants. So it is very clear that the militants have some hands in this operation,” Sharma added.

Money generated from poppy cultivation in countries like Afghanistan has been used to fund terror related activities in the region. By Tahir Nadeem Khan(ANI)
