Arms for US embassy seized in Pakistan: Report

Islamabad, June 6 (IANS) Suspicious luggage containing bulletproof jackets and weapons allegedly belonging to the US embassy was seized by police here, a media report said.

Islamabad police Saturday intercepted at the Zero Point picket here a suspicious vehicle which was found to be carrying cargo comprising M-16 rifles and magazines; 9 mm pistols and magazines, several pistol pouches, compasses, radio sets, maps, knives, and other army articles, The Nation quoted sources as saying.

The two carriers — identified as Noushad and Lal Badshah — were arrested and during questioning disclosed that they were transporting these weapons to the US embassy, the paper said quoting sources close to the investigation.

The accused told the police that they had nothing to do with the weapons. ‘The US embassy has just hired our services to transport this luggage,’ the police quoted them as saying.

The newspaper report also said that a number of officials of the US embassy tried hard to secure the release of the weapons but the police refused to oblige.

According to the report, the consignment was meant for one Gustovo Ritschl of the US army. However, the accused did not have any permission from the US embassy authorities.

Police sources said they also recovered ‘hundreds of pouches’ of different weapons besides body armour, CDs, cell phones and sunglasses.

The spokesman for the US embassy neither confirmed nor denied the incident, the report said.

The police have registered a case. This is the third FIR registered against US embassy personnel, the report said.

Plane crash case: Court issues summons against Raja Bhaiyya

Pratapgarh (UP), June 6 (PTI) A local court has issued summons to controversial independent MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiyya and two others in a case in which the former UP minister was accused of flying a two-seater plane without a license which crash-landed here last year. “On the basis of a chargesheet filed by police, the court has directed Kunda MLA, Raja Bhaiyya, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and pilot Captain Ramesh chandra Ramnani to appear in person before it on July 3,” prosecution sources said.

Raja Bhaiyya and two others had a close shave on the evening of March 22 last year after the private ”microlite” aircraft they were flying crashed on the banks of Chausa river in Dheemi village of Pratapgarh district. Raja Bhaiyya and the pilot sustained serious injuries in the accident.

It was alleged that Raja Bhaiyya was flying the aircraft at the time of the crash. Later an FIR was lodged at Hathgawan police station against Raja Bhaiyya, Zulfiqar and Capt Ramnani under Section 2/3 of the Aircraft Act 1934 and Sections 279, 338, 201 of the IPC. The sections cover charges of flying an aircraft without a licence, flying in a prohibited area, not informing ATC before flying and causing danger to public by flying without a skilled pilot.

Director (Safety), Civil Aviation Department, Ramnath also probed into the incident. The investigating officer recently filed a chargesheet against the three accused in the court, the sources said.

Not Mayawati, Akhilesh framed me in fraud case: Amar

Expelled Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh on Sunday mounted a frontal attack against SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s son and Lok Sabha MP Akhilesh Yadav, alleging that he was behind the case of Rs 500 crore financial fraud registered against him in Kanpur last year.

“First of all, I want to apologise to UP CM Mayawati because it was not she but the brother and son of the SP supremo (Mulayam Singh Yadav) who got me framed in the case lodged at Babupurva police station (in Kanpur),” Amar Singh wrote in his latest blog post, without naming Ram Gopal Yadav (Mulayam’s brother) and Akhilesh.

Amar Singh was referring to an FIR lodged against him and his wife Pankaja in Babupurva police station (in Kanpur) in October last year in connection with a financial fraud. The complainant, advocate Shiv Kant Tiwari, had alleged that the couple had amassed nearly Rs 500 crore between 2003 and 2008.

“A functionary of my old party (SP) was given Rs 5 crore in first tranche and then Rs 2 crore in second trance, a total of Rs 7 crore, to frame me,” he alleged, claiming that one Dhirendra Sahay, whom he describes as Akhilesh Yadav’s friend, among others, which included a Congress Member of Parliament and a senior bureaucrat in Mayawati administration, were aware of the conspiracy from the very beginning.

Akhilesh rejects charges

NEW DELHI: Akhilesh Yadav rejected Amar Singh’s charge that he was behind framing him in the financial fraud case. “I don’t have any friend by the name of Dhirendra Sahay. It is neither in my character or nature nor in my habit to frame anybody in false charges ostensibly to settle political scores,” Akhilesh told The Indian Express . ENS

No help for kidnapped minor Hindu girl forcibly converted to Islam by Pak cleric

Lahore, May 26 (ANI): The deplorable plight of the Hindus in Pakistan has once again come to the fore with a shocking incident of a minor girl being kidnapped and forced to accept Islam by a leader of a madrassa.

Thirteen year old Radha was kidnapped in December 2009 and there has been no news about her whereabouts yet.

Radha’s father, Mehnga Ram, said he has knocked on every door from the President to the Punjab Chief Minister and Chief Secretary, but there have been no attempt to recover his daughter, who is said to be in the custody of Abdul Jabbar , the head the Darul Aloom in Khanpur.

Even the police appears to be helping the madrassa leaders, as it has refused to register any First Information Report (FIR) in the case.

“Local police, including the former and current district police officers of Rahim Yar Khan, are supporting the people who abducted Radha and are neither registering a first information report (FIR) against the accused, nor are they taking any action to recover the girl from the custody of Abdul Jabbar and Naveed,” said Mehnga Ram.

“We took local Hindu leaders and other respected people to the authorities in order to push them to lodge an FIR against Abdul Jabbar, but the officials sent us to then DCO Imtiaz Gul, who after listening to our story took our applications, but did nothing except delay the case and make false promises,” he added.

The madrassa leaders had initially denied that Radha was in their captivity, but later admitted that she with them and did not want to meet her ‘non-Muslim’ relatives.

Human rights organisations had raised the issue on several fronts, but there has been little action concerning the case.

Ramesh Pal, a local human rights activist said he had attempted to pursue the case and had raised the issue at every possible platform, but no failed on all fronts.

“I personally met Abdul Jabbar, but he never entertained any of our requests. This is a clear case of forced conversion,” The Daily Times quoted Pal, as saying.

When enquired about the issue, Member of the National Assembly Dr Araish Kumar, assured that action would be taken and that he would personally discuss the issue with Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif.

Parliamentary Secretary for Human Rights Tahir Khalil Sindhu said that he had received an application on the case and was already planning to take action against the culprits. (ANI)

Kahlon-Chitkara tiff reaches cricket ground

The ongoing tussle between RTI activist Sarbjeet Singh Kahlon and Ludhiana Cricket Association general secretary Vinod Chitkara spilled over to the cricket ground at PAU on Sunday, after Kahlon allegedly abused two players on the ground.

Kahlon and Chitkara have been at war over the issue of election of players for the under-15 team. Kahlon’s son, too, is a cricketer and was not selected for the team, which according to him, was done to accommodate Chitkara’s son. Kahlon even showed some documents to prove that Chitkara’s son was over-aged and did not qualify for the team and that he was using his position to get his son selected.

The police had to be called in to control the situation. The ruckus broke out when Chandigarh was playing Ludhiana in a domestic cricket match. It has been learnt that Kahlon abused players Rahul Singla and Varun Chitkara, who lodged a complaint with the umpire, who took up the matter with game referee Jasvir Singh. Singh, meanwhile, said, “The police are looking into the matter. We will also report the issue to the Punjab Cricket Association.”

Kahlon rubbished the entire issue and said, “The matter is quite the contrary. I reached the ground around 11.30 in the morning. Ajay Singla and his son Varun approached me and started abusing me. I called in the PCA and seeing the police, they backed off. The moment the police returned, these two again began abusing and manhandling me. I went to the police station and recorded my statement . These two never even reached the police station.”

He said, “Like Vinod’s son, Ajay Singla”s son, too, was found over-aged for the under-19 team last year. Chitkara is already facing an FIR filed by me. Moreover, had I abused the boys, why no one else heard the abuses? The umpire or the referee did not hear anything. This shows the complaint is completely false.”

Nirupama Pathak”s post-mortem report indicates murder: Jharkhand DGP

Ranchi (Jharkhand), May 13 (ANI): Jharkhand Director General of Police (DGP) Neyaz Ahmed on Thursday said that the post-mortem report and initial investigation of the murder of Delhi based journalist Nirupama Pathak indicates murder.

“The post-mortem report indicates murder and we are investigating on the same lines. We won”t work under anyone”s influence. We have kept all our options open and we will probe whatever point comes forward. We will handle the case justly,” said Ahmed.

The state police submitted their report of the investigation to Ahmed on Wednesday.

“The progress in the case so far is that Superintendent of Police (SP) has submitted the report of the investigation. Yesterday, I called on the SP, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Inspector General (IG) Crime Investigation Department (CID) and others,” said Ahmed.

“We deliberated on every aspect of the case and went through all the angles of the case investigation,” he added.

Ahmed, however, did not disclose any details of the report.

Twenty-three-year-old Nirupama was found dead at her home in Koderma District in mysterious circumstances on April 29.

Her mother Sudha Pathak has been arrested in this connection, while the police have also filed a case of rape and abetment to suicide against her boyfriend Priyabhanshu Ranjan.

On May 9, Ranjan”s parents claimed to have mobile proof that could nail the complicity of Nirupama”s parents in what they say is murder.

In a startling claim, Ranjan”s father said he had Nirupama”s last SMS in which she said that she had been locked inside a bathroom and was not being allowed to go out.

He also said that a similar message had come from his son, who was in Delhi.

The revelation came after Koderma Police served notices to three doctors who had performed a post mortem on Nirupama.

The court directed the police to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Ranjan, following charges levelled by Nirupama”s arrested mother Sudha Pathak.

Nirupama”s mother has described her daughter”s death as a suicide case.

However, the post-mortem report revealed that Pathak died due to asphyxia as a result of smothering and that she was 10-12 weeks pregnant. (ANI)

‘All powerful’ Rehman Malik in whitewash mode to quash cases against him

Islamabad, May 12 (ANI): Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has been accused of tampering with cases filed against him and for targeting officers who are not ready to toe his line.

The official record of the 1996 cases against Malik has started to disappear and FIA officials who arrested and handled him back in 1996 are now facing his wrath.

A director of FIA in Peshawar confirmed to The News that the record relating to the minister had been misplaced and it is being reconstructed, but he denied they had tampered with the previous record.

The officials have been punished and harassed so much that they have now come on record to publicly complain that the all-powerful Interior Minister is targeting them.

Tariq Malik, FIA’s deputy director, who has twice been demoted after he refused to tamper with the record about the charge sheeting of the minister, has now been transferred to Quetta from Islamabad.

Tariq being an FIA inspector had filed a source report in 1996 that led to the registration of an FIR No. 14/96 against Malik, alleging that he received two Honda cars as a bribe from Toyota Company.

The Interior Minister’s staff officer summoned Tahir Malik in the ministry six weeks ago and interrogated him on how he came to know about the cars and how was it a bribe. The staff officer then demanded of Malik that he alter his statement to help Rehman Malik get acquitted.

When he refused, in a space of two weeks, he was not only demoted again but also transferred to Quetta, a station that is seeing the pullout of all Punjabi FIA staffers after some of them were murdered there.

All these cases against Rehman Malik stand reopened after the revocation of the NRO but since the FIA is the executing agency, it is lending crucial support to cover up the past cases against their current boss.

Likewise, Sardar Azam, another assistant director, now retired, who had arrested Rehman Malik the day FIR No 14/96 was registered against him, has stated on record that his pension is being delayed as punishment. (ANI)

Nirupama Pathak”s clothes to undergo forensic tests in Ranchi

Ranchi, May 11 (ANI): The clothes of Delhi-based journalist Nirupama Pathak, who was found dead in mysterious circumstances at her home in Jharkhand”s Koderma District on April 29, have been sent for forensic tests to Ranchi.

Meanwhile, Nirupama”s boyfriend Priyabhanshu Ranjan”s family has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into her death.

Tytler given clean chit in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case

New Delhi, Apr 27 (ANI): A Karkardooma court on Tuesday let off former minister and Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case after accepting the closure report submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that gave a clean chit to him.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Rakesh Pandit said: “There is no sufficient material to send Tytler to trial.”

Giving a clean cheat to Tytler, the court further said there was no ground to order further investigation in the case.

The CBI had submitted that there was nothing to proceed against 66-year-old Tytler as two witnesses, Jasbir Singh and Surinder Singh, were not reliable and their statements were ”false and concocted”.

Earlier on April 2, the CBI had given a clean chit to Tytler

De-sealing its final investigation report in a court, the CBI has recommended quashing of FIR against Tytler.

On March 28, the CBI filed the report in a sealed envelope before Metropolitan Magistrate Ram Lal Meena.

Tytler was among the three prominent leaders named in the reports on anti-Sikh riots. Two other leaders named were Sajjan Kumar and the late HKL Bhagat.

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which claimed the lives of almost 3000 Sikhs, were triggered by the assassination of Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 by two of her Sikh bodyguards. (ANI)

Lahore High Court issues notices to Asif, ex-girlfriend Veena Malik

Lahore, Apr.16 (ANI): The Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued notices to both fast bowler Mohammed Asif and his estranged girl friend Veena Malik on their respective petitions seeking action against each other.

While the court has issued a notice to television actress Malik on a petition filed by Asif seeking orders to stop her from initiating any action against him and directed her to file a reply, it has also asked Asif’s counsel to respond to Malik’s petition.

Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry also sought a reply from the Ghalib Market Police Station House Officer (SHO) for not registering the First Information Report (FIR) against Asif on Malik’s complaint.

Veena’s counsel argued before the court that the police officer was not registering an FIR against Asif even after an additional district and sessions judge had directed him to do so.

During the hearing, Asif’s lawyer rejected all charges labelled against his client and said that Malik was falsely accusing Asif of fraud because the cricketer had refused to marry her.

Earlier, Malik had asked the concerned authorities to register a case against Asif for giving her ‘fake’ cheques.

In her plea, Malik claimed that she had given 10 million rupees to Asif, and the cheque that the fast bowler had given her to return the money had bounced.

Malik claimed that she had supported Asif both ‘emotionally’ and ‘financially’ during his bad days, and now she ‘at least’ wants her money back.

Malik had earlier sued Asif for recovery of 3.4 million rupees.

“When he (Asif) was banned from cricket and when no one was willing to support or help him I stood by his side and I gave him money which he said he would pay me back when things improved,” Malik had said.

“Now that his situation is better he is trying to avoid meeting his commitment but I want my money back, it is my hard earned money,” she added.

Asif was romantically linked to Malik, and there were rumours last year that both got secretly married in London, which has been denied by both of them.

However, Asif got married to a girl from Lahore, Hina, recently. (ANI)

Tainted godman resigns as ”Dhyanapeetam Ashram” head

Bangalore, Mar 30 (ANI): Self-proclaimed godman Swami Nityananda, who was reportedly under the scanner ever since a video of him in a compromising position with Tamil actress Ranjitha surfaced, on Tuesday announced his decision to step down as the chief of the ”Dhyanapeetam Ashram” and all other trusts associated with it.

Addressing his followers on his official website, Nityananda said, “I have decided to live a life of spiritual seclusion, for some indefinite time and to enable the Dhyanapeetam to function with such amended agenda as may be necessary.”

“I am resigning as the head of the Dhyanapeetam and from all the trusts associated with it,” he added.

Swami Nityananda, who is facing criminal cases including that of rape further said, “In view of the developments in the last three weeks following the media reports about me as the head of Dhyanapeetam, I had met some of the leading acharyas of Hindu Dharma at Haridwar Kumbh Mela,” adding that he had briefed them about the truth.

“Candidly discussing what had happened, I had sought their spiritual and moral support, guidance for me, and their views on the future course of Dhyanapeetam. I had also undertaken that I would act entirely in accordance with their counsel,” he claimed.

The Karnataka High Court has turned down the godman”s bail plea for anticipatory bail.

The court had on March 24 ordered the state police to produce all documents relating to the cases filed against Swami Nithyananda, who is facing allegations of involvement in a sex scandal.

Following a petition by the swami seeking to quash the cases, justice Arali Nagaraj issued a notice to the Bidadi police, directing them to produce all documents and records concerning the various criminal cases, including rape, registered against the godman.

The swami had filed a writ petition in the high court, challenging the first information report (FIR) registered against him by the Bidadi police. Besides asking the court to quash the FIR, he had also sought a stay on all the other proceedings against him. Nithyananda had contended that as per the provisions of the law, only the sufferers could file complaints, and not a third party.

The petition contended that Karuppa Lenin, a former disciple and driver of the swami, had conspired to defame the religious institution by levelling charges against him.

The Chennai police had lodged various cases against the godman, including rape, under the Indian Penal Code after Lenin filed a complaint against him on March 3. The Ramanagaram police had, in turn, handed over the case to the CID.

In his petition, Nithyanananda submitted that prima facie, no complaint had been filed by any victim or aggrieved person and Lenin”s complaint was governed by an ulterior motive. It was unfortunate that an act aimed at assassinating the character of the swami had been glorified by the media, it added. (ANI)

Park Street fire: DNA tests to be conducted on charred bodies

Kolkata, Mar 25 (ANI): Forensic experts will on Thursday conduct DNA tests on the charred bodies that were recovered from the scarred interiors of the Stephen Court building on Park Street on Wednesday as relatives messed up in identifying the bodies that led to a dispute.

The dispute will be solved through DNA tests.

Kolkata Police had on Wednesday arrested the caretaker of Stephen Court, Tarun Bagaria, and his assistant Ramshankar Singh. They were picked up from the office of building owner Sanjay Bagaria, whose role is now under the scanner.

Bagaria, a city-based businessman, has investments in jute and steel industries and he is said to be one of the owners of the building or one of the members of a trust that owns it.

The police, meanwhile, are now looking for directors and board members of the company, but not confirming names.

An FIR has been registered against ”the owners of the premises, his associates and those responsible for maintenance.”

Cases have been filed under Section 304 – culpable homicide, a non-bailable offence; Section 285 – negligent act causing fire and under several fire laws.

The death toll was on Wednesday reported to be over 24. Most people killed in the blaze were young recruits at a call centre and a few other offices on the top floors who didn”t know where the stairways were.

The West Bengal Government has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of those killed and ordered a high level probe into the fire that swept through the three floors of the multi-storied Stephen Court building on Park Street on Tuesday afternoon. (ANI)

Ruchika case hearing adjourned till April 15

Chandigarh, Mar 10 (ANI): A Chandigarh court on Wednesday adjourned the hearing of the Ruchika Girhotra molestation case, which involves former Haryana Director General of Police (DGP) SPS Rathore till April 15 on the plea that his lawyer was still recovering from an assault on him last month.

Rathore arrived in the court accompanied by his lawyer-wife Abha Rathore and a Haryana cop. Abha Rathore told the court that Rathore”s counsel N D Sharma was still recovering from the assault on him outside the court premises last month.

Rathore was on February 8 punched and stabbed thrice with a blunt instrument outside the court premises by Utsav Sharma, a student of the prestigious National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. The former DGP”s lawyer had also sustained injuries in the attack and both had to be hospitalised.

The court had last month passed the adjournment order on medical grounds.

The former cop has been charged for allegedly molesting 14-year old teenager Ruchika Girhotra, a budding tennis star in 1990s.

Rathore has three cases pending against him in the court; all filed by Ruchika”s family and friends.

Ruchika”s family lawyer Pankaj Bharadwaj had earlier filed two FIRs against Rathore.

The lawyer had claimed that the first FIR was filed for forging documents like the inquest report and the other for illegal detention of Ruchika”s brother, Ashu, who was kept in illegal detention at the behest of Rathore and given tortures.

The third case is that of abetment to suicide against him. The family has claimed that Ruchika was expelled from Sacred Heart Convent in Chandigarh due to Rathore”s influence.

Teenager Ruchika had killed herself three years after the incident by drinking poison. (ANI)

Delhi Court to hear Bofors pay-off case today

New Delhi, Sep 8 (ANI): A Delhi court will hear the Bofors payoffs case against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi today. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) may reveal its course of action following the withdrawal of Interpol’s Red Corner Notice against him.

The matter is to come up for hearing before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja.

During the brief hearing on April 30, Additional Solicitor General P P Malhotra, appearing for CBI, had informed the court that the Red Corner Notice issued against Quattrocchi was withdrawn in November last year.

The ASG had also sought two months time to decide on the future course of action in the politically-sensitive case on the court’s query as to what options were left with the probe agency following the withdrawal of the Red Corner Notice.

The CBI had registered the FIR in the Bofors case on January 22, 1990, three years after Swedish Radio on April 16, 1987, claimed that A B Bofors, the makers of the 155 mm howitzers, had paid kickbacks to top Indian politicians and key defence officials to secure the Rs 1,437 crore gun deal. The contract between the Indian government and the Swedish Company for the supply of 400 field guns was signed on March, 24, 1986. Demolition drive to knock down illegal structures in Nainital

Nainital (Uttarakhand), Aug. 9 (ANI): Civic authorities in Naintal launched a fresh demolition drive of illegal buildings and structures, which were posing a threat to the fragile landscape and environment of the region, on Sunday.

The natural beauty of Nainital that attracts hordes of tourists every year is gradually fading away with the coming up of several concrete structures, both legal and illegal.

The Supreme Court also had taken a serious view of such developments, forcing the Nainital Development Authority to knock down all these illegal structures.

“We had sealed this building in January. But, despite that, they carried on construction activities. An FIR (First Information Report) has also been lodged against this person. But, still he continued constructing. So, in the end, we had to demolish the building,” said Dheeraj Gabryal, Secretary of Nainital Development Authority.

However, one of the building owners complained that he was not given any prior notice.

“They did not give us notice. If they had given us a notice, we would not have built this,” said Ajiz Ahmed, owner of an unauthorised building.

Environmentalists have maintained that the rapid illegal construction were responsible for the decline of greenery in the city.

“The natural beauty of Nainital is extraordinary. In order to protect its beauty, we should have put a check on construction of several buildings. But, unfortunately, building after building was constructed, both legal and illegal. You can see many unauthorised buildings being demolished,” said Navin Verma, an environmentalist.

Situated at an altitude of 1,938 metres above sea level, Nainital is surrounded by mountains and boasts of a world famous lake named Naini, which is the prime attraction of the city.

Tourists in large numbers throng the city every year to catch a glimpse of its natural beauty, which unfortunately has been marred by the illegal construction activities. (ANI)
