United fight back to book final berth

London – Manchester United overcame a 1-0 first-leg deficit on Tuesday, beating Derby County 4-2 in the second leg to secure their place in the Carling Cup final by a 4-3 aggregate.

Kris Commons had given Derby a surprise first-leg victory, but they were blown away before half-time at Old Trafford, conceding three goals in a 20-minute spell.

Nani got the first with a spectacular swerving drive, although television replays suggested goalkeeper Roy Carroll might have done rather better.

John O’Shea, played onside by Gary Teale, rolled in his first of the season to make it 2-0, and Carlos Tevez headed a third from a Rafael cross.

Derby steadied in the second half, and pulled one back with an 80th minute Giles Barnes penalty, after Jonny Evans had tripped Paul Green.

Cristiano Ronaldo converted an 88th-minute penalty after a foul by Carroll on Tevez seemingly to make the game secure.

But Derby still weren’t finished, Barnes driving in a low free-kick in injury-time.

Tottenham Hotspur take a 4-1 first-leg lead to Burnley in Wednesday’s second semi-final. dpa

Amy Winehouse sings for ‘new Rugby man’

London, January 8 (ANI): Amy Winehouse reportedly took to the piano to serenade her alleged new man in a Caribbean hotel bar.

The ‘Rehab’ hitmaker, who has reportedly parted ways with jailbird hubby Blake Fielder-Civil, was said to have paired up with budding actor Josh Bowman after meeting on a holiday in St Lucia.

Josh, however, had dismissed rumours claiming their romance, saying Amy was “not his kind of girl”.

And now, onlookers alleged that the two mates hugged and kissed after the singer ended her performance in the wee hours.

“When she finished playing, she rushed over to Josh and was hugging and kissing him,” the Sun quoted a hotel guest as saying.

“Her voice was amazing. Josh was obviously impressed. They were all over each other,” the guest added. (ANI)

Taylor wins record 14th Darts World Championship

London, Jan.5 (ANI): Phil Taylor broke his own record for a major final when producing a brilliant display to hammer Raymond van Barneveld 7-1 in the World Darts Championship to take his 14th world title in London last night.

Taylor had not won the title for three years, but the result was never in doubt as he racked up a brilliant three-dart average of 109.76 at Alexandra Palace, reports The Independent.

The 48-year-old, who took advantage of some poor finishing from Van Barneveld, has now won 12 of the 16 PDC championships.

A focused Taylor began impressively, taking the first leg against the throw on his way to claiming the first set.

Van Barneveld hung in to level twice in the next set, but Taylor was not to be denied as he moved to within two sets of another title.

That quickly became one as Van Barneveld again missed crucial chances.

The Dutchman forced a decider in the eighth set but it was delaying the inevitable as Taylor finished off the match in emphatic style. (ANI)

Maria Riesch makes it three slaloms in a row to top World Cup standings

Zagreb – Maria Riesch of Germany won her third successive slalom in Zagreb Sunday to take the overall lead in the women’s alpine ski World Cup standings.

Riesch benefited from a mistake by Lindsey Vonn of the United States who crashed out shortly before the finishing line when she appeared to be on the way to a clear victory.

Riesch clocked 1 minute 58.96 seconds for the two runs, with Italian Nicole Gius second, 0.44 seconds behind, and Sarka Zahrobska of the Czech Republic third, 0.63 seconds back.

Vonn, the reigning World Cup champion, had led from the first leg but a mistake shortly before the end of the second run when leading by almost a second cost her the race and her overall lead in the standings.

“It was a gift for me,” Riesch said.

“I am sorry for Lindsey. I wouldn’t have beaten her today if she hadn’t have gone out.”

Riesch now has 607 points overall, with Finland’s Tanja Poutiainen, who finished seventh, moving second on 534 and Vonn slipping to third on 530.

Riesch extends her lead in the slalom standings to 400 points, with Vonn on 290 and Zahrobska on 284. (dpa)
