Real secure Mourinho as coach after Inter deal

Real Madrid will present Jose Mourinho as their coach on Monday after agreeing an undisclosed compensation deal with Inter Milan, the Spanish club said on Friday.

Inter president Massimo Moratti and his Real counterpart Florentino Perez met to thrash out details of the package that will free Mourinho to leave and join the nine-times European champions after a treble-winning season in Italy.

While Spanish and Italian media reported that Inter would receive eight million euros ($9.80 million), a statement from the Italian champions said: “Real will eventually have to pay all the clause in the contract.”

Inter added that exchange of players could form part of the deal.

Mourinho led Inter to three trophies last season, culminating in their Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich at Real’s Bernabeu Stadium.

Real turned to him after sacking Manuel Pellegrini this week following a season with no trophies for a team that had 250 million euros spent on it last summer.

“We are convinced that we need a fresh impulse and we are convinced that Jose Mourinho is the right person to take on the job,” Perez said at the time.

The move for Mourinho marks a change in direction for Perez, who has preferred to invest money in the world’s best players rather than high-profile coaches in the past.

STRONG MAN

“(We looked to Mourinho) for his prestige, for the personality he has, for his great ability to absorb the pressure and for the leadership Madrid needs,” Perez’s right-hand man Jorge Valdano said in a radio interview earlier on Friday.

“We lacked a strong man in a moment of transition like this.”

Real tripped up in the big games last season, losing in the ‘clasicos’ against Barcelona and in the Champions League first knockout round against Olympique Lyon.

Mourinho, 47, has a reputation as a motivator, is a great tactician and is strong enough to ride out the inevitable ups and downs of managing a side under the local media’s microscope.

With Porto he won the UEFA Cup and the European Cup in 2004, and he won back-to-back league titles with Chelsea before moving to Italy.

He will be expected to get the most out of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo but is likely to demand more of a say in planning at the club.

Pellegrini spoke of being isolated from the decision-making process when it came to planning the team, and Jose Antonio Camacho walked out on the club in 2004 complaining of interference in team affairs from above.

Spanish media have already speculated that Real will move back into the transfer market, with Inter’s Brazilian fullback Maicon and Benfica’s Argentine winger Angel Di Maria among the names linked with the club.

Real Madrid fan Nadal distracted by La Liga climax

Real Madrid fan Rafa Nadal may be distracted by the thrilling climax to the soccer season during his Madrid Open final with arch rival Roger Federer on Sunday.

The tennis world has waited a year to see the duo face off in their 21st meeting but unfortunately for the Spaniard, his long-awaited date with Federer will clash with Real Madrid’s season finale against Malaga.

At a news conference after his semi-final victory on Saturday, Nadal quizzed tournament director Manolo Santana over the plan to start the final at around 1630 GMT, just 30 minutes before the soccer match kicks off.

“Nobody could have known that Real and Barca would be playing for the title on the same date as the final,” Santana said. “If we have made a mistake time will tell.”

A laughing Nadal replied: “I’m sorry to have put you under the spotlight but will the (soccer) scores be up on the big screens, at least during the changeovers?”

Barcelona can clinch a second straight La Liga crown by defeating Real Valladolid but Real Madrid are only a point behind in second spot and victory by them at Malaga and a slip-up by the leaders will hand Nadal’s men the title.

Chelsea win dramatic Cup final to seal Double

Chelsea overcame a resilient Portsmouth side, who made a mockery of their pre-match billing as lambs to the slaughter, to win a dramatic FA Cup final 1-0 and clinch their first League and Cup Double on Saturday.

Didier Drogba maintained his remarkable knack of scoring at Wembley Stadium with the winner from a 59th minute free-kick after Chelsea had hit the woodwork five times in the first half while Frank Lampard missed a late penalty.

In an astonishing match of twists and turns, Portsmouth’s Kevin-Prince Boateng, who had scored from the spot in the semi-final at Wembley, saw his 56th minute penalty saved.

The triumph gave Chelsea a second straight FA Cup final victory, after they beat Everton last season, and was a third success in four seasons for the west London side.

It was Chelsea’s sixth FA Cup triumph and fifth in 13 years as they became the seventh English club to win the double and the first team since Arsenal in 2003 to retain the trophy.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti, who has won the Double in his first season in England, told reporters afterwards: “Its a fantastic victory for me, I am very happy.

FANTASTIC SEASON

“We won’t do anything special to celebrate, I will follow my players and my friends. Wine, sure, champagne. It is right to have a celebration, the team had a fantastic season.”

“It has never happened in my career to hit the bar or post five times in one half… and we didn’t start too well in the second half but I was not worried because we were in control of the game and had chances to score.”

Portsmouth manager Avram Grant said: “It was a very difficult season. It is a season I will not forget. I have won a lot of games in my life, trophies and everything, but this was unbelievable. We always played against the odds.”

In the first final between the champions and the bottom team in the top flight, Chelsea dominated the first half but were thwarted on five occasions when Drogba (twice), Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou and John Terry all hit the bar or post.

Despite the pressure on their team, Portsmouth’s incredibly vociferous fans made the greater noise inside the sun-drenched stadium and stayed to applaud their players even after defeat.

The match only turned Chelsea’s way when Boateng’s penalty, awarded after Chelsea’s Brazilian substitute Juliano Belletti brought down Aruna Dindane, was saved by Petr Cech’s legs.

Drogba fired home a 25-metre free-kick three minutes later that went in off the inside of a post to maintain his record of scoring in all of the six competitive matches he has played for Chelsea at Wembley — three semi-finals and three FA Cup finals.

Lampard fired wide from the spot in the 88th after Michael Brown clattered into him but Chelsea had already just about done enough to become the seventh club in English history to win the Double, the 11th time the feat has been achieved.

OVERWHELMING FAVOURITES

Chelsea were quoted at 5-1 on to beat Portsmouth who are in administration, have debts of 138 million pounds ($201.2 million) and finished bottom of the Premier League.

Some pundits had predicted a record FA Cup final victory following Chelsea’s 8-0 trouncing of Wigan Athletic when they clinched the league title at Stamford Bridge last Sunday.

But Portsmouth, many of whose players may have been playing their last match for the south-coast club because of the financial problems and relegation, weathered the storm and at times dominated Chelsea for possession and passing.

However, the Londoners had only one first half scare with Cech producing a reflex save to deny Frederic Piquionne.

Pompey’s first close shave came after 14 minutes when Lampard shot against the outside of David James’s left-hand post with a 25-metre drive.

Kalou was guilty of one of the most blatant misses in any Cup final after 27 minutes when he shinned an Ashley Cole cross against the bar in front of an open goal from four metres.

Chelsea captain Terry and Drogba, twice, also hit the woodwork before halftime.

The Ivory Coast striker, who will lead his country at this year’s World Cup finals, showed his utter frustration by smacking the post with his hand.

Chelsea had four other chances in the opening period but needed a stunning reflex save from Cech to keep out an instinctive close-range effort from Piquionne after 22 minutes.

Portsmouth had the brighter start in the second period but there was an air of inevitably about the outcome once Boateng saw his penalty saved and Drogba scored.

The icing on the cake for Chelsea’s England defender Ashley Cole was a place in the record books as he climbed the steps to the Royal Box and collected his sixth FA Cup winners’ medal.

Chelsea’s Drogba maintains Wembley scoring streak

Didier Drogba maintained his remarkable scoring record for Chelsea at Wembley Stadium when his 59th minute free-kick put his team 1-0 ahead in the FA Cup final against Portsmouth on Saturday.

The striker, who will also lead Ivory Coast as captain in the World Cup, has now scored in all six competitive matches Chelsea have played there since the stadium reopened in 2007.

He scored the winner in their 1-0 FA Cup final victory over Manchester United in 2007; Chelsea’s only goal in a 2-1 defeat by Tottenham Hotspur in the 2008 League Cup final and the winner in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Arsenal in 2009.

Drogba also grabbed the equaliser in a 2-1 win over Everton in last season’s FA Cup final and got the opener in Chelsea’s 3-0 FA Cup semi-final win against Aston Villa last month.

England not approaching World Twenty20 final with trepidation: Flower

Barbados (West Indies), May 15 (ANI): The England cricket team is not approaching the World Twenty20 final against Australia with trepidation, said coach Andy Flower on Friday.

“The guys are bouncing off the walls and really looking forward to the game (against Australia),” Flower said.

“I’m excited to be here having never been anywhere near a World Cup final or anything. We all are. No one is approaching it with any trepidation at all,” he added.

Talking about England’s semi-final victory over Sri Lanka, Flower said while the team was gung-ho with happiness, “This is not the time for back-slapping.”

“We have a final tomorrow and we haven’t achieved anything yet,” he said.

Flower stressed the need to look forward, not back, but allowed himself a small glimpse in the rear-view mirror at a tenure as coach that has seen relentless progress in all forms of the game culminating in a chance at a limited-overs title.

From steadying the ship as interim coach here in the Caribbean last winter, he has since guided England to an Ashes win, drawn against South Africa on tour in a Test series and beaten them in the ODIs, and beaten Bangladesh.

“We played some really good cricket to start off the winter in the Champions Trophy, carried it on by beating South Africa and now we have transferred a bit of that into the Twenty20 stuff,” said Flower.

“I’ve been very pleased with the way the guys have played in this tournament so far. The batsmen have shown confidence and innovation, made good decisions and handled themselves well under pressure. The bowlers have shown a lot of skill and nous in using the conditions to our advantage,” Flower said.

“But we have achieved nothing yet. We have a game to win and if we don’t win it we won’t be holders of any world cup or trophy – it is as simple as that,” he added. (ANI)

Murray approaches every match without fear

London, July 3 (ANI): British tennis star Andy Murray has said that he approaches every match without fear, and adds that he is on a mission to end 71 years of British hurt of not winning a Wimbledon men’s final.

According to The Sun, success on Centre Court will make Murray the first Britisher to crack the final frontier since Bunny Austin in 1938.

Around 13million television fans are expected to be on the edge of their seats as he fights American Andy Roddick in today’s semi-final.

Victory would mean a probable clash on Sunday with five-time champion Roger Federer, who takes on Tommy Haas.

Murray, 22, said: “I never go on court fearing anyone. If you want to get to the top, you have to think you can win against the best players in the world regardless of where you are ranked, how old you are and your experience.

“I am pleased to be in the semi-finals but this is a tournament I want to win.”

Murray has won six out of eight matches against both Roddick and Federer. (ANI)

Children ‘being kidnapped from Sri Lanka refugee camps’

Colombo, May 21 (ANI): Children are reportedly being abducted from refugee camps in Sri Lanka, apparently with the tacit approval of the Rajapaksa government, human rights groups have claimed.

The Telegraph quoted The Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers as saying that it had received verified reports of child abductions from camps in the main resettlement area of Vavuniya, often by paramilitary Tamil groups.

Children as young as 12 are among those taken, the coalition said, suggesting that paramilitaries – who had allied with the military in the fight against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) – are being used to identify and weed out former Tiger child soldiers.

The paramilitary groups have been allowed “unhindered” access to the camps that are tightly guarded by government troops, it said.

The Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers is an umbrella group of global organizations that includes Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

“The motive is slightly unclear,” said Charu Lata Hogg, a spokeswoman for the groups.

The military declared its final victory over the LTTE on Monday, ending a decades-old conflict that has claimed up to 100,000 lives. (ANI)

Fergie says Man U wary of Arsenal threat

London, May 15 (ANI): Sir Alex Ferguson has warned his Manchester United players not to underestimate Arsenal on Saturday as they attempt to clinch a third successive title with just a point against Arsene Wenger’s men at Old Trafford.

United’s 2-1 victory at Wigan on Wednesday, when second-half goals from Carlos Tevez and Michael Carrick overturned Hugo Rodallega’s first-half opener for the home side, moved the champions to within touching distance of the title.

The Premier League trophy will be presented to United following Saturday’s clash against the Gunners if they claim the required point.

According to The Sun, United have twice beaten Arsenal in the last three weeks having eliminated the Londoners with a 4-1 aggregate Champions League semi-final victory.

Ferguson insists that Wenger’s team are still capable of spoiling the party by upsetting United at Old Trafford. (ANI)

Arsenal branded a bunch of babies by Man U winger Evra

London, May 6 (ANI): Manchester United’s left back Patrice Evra celebrated his team’s semi-final victory against Arsenal by branding the latter a bunch of babies.

Evra claimed the Gunners were totally outclassed throughout the one-sided Champions League semi-final.

The Sun quoted the French international as saying: “It was 11 men against 11 babies. We never doubted ourselves. We have much more experience and that’s what made the difference. We were always confident. It should have been that score in the first leg anyway. It is a great United team that won.”

“Football today is not only about playing well, it’s about winning trophies. Everybody talks about the way Arsenal play but, at the end of the day, it’s about winning silverware. At United, we play well and we win. Tactically and technically we were superior. You look at our starting 11 and theirs and you see that we are well above,” he said.

United boss Alex Ferguson hailed two-goal hero Cristiano Ronaldo – and insisted no defence in the world can live with the current World Player of the Year.

Fergie said: “Arsenal just couldn’t handle Ronaldo tonight. He was the difference between the two teams.

The Portuguese winger admitted: “In the last few games I’ve felt really, really good. This is a crucial time in the season and the big games are all coming up for us.” (ANI)

Sri Lanka refuses entry to Swedish Foreign Minister

Colombo, Apr. 28 (ANI): A day after declaring an end to the use of heavy artillery and aerial weaponry against the rebel Liberation of Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE), the Government of Sri Lanka has refused entry to Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.

Bildt was to have arrived in Colombo on Wednesday with British counterpart David Miliband and France’s Bernard Kouchner to assess the situation in northern Sri Lanka.

No reason has been given for the refusal, but Sri Lanka has had tense relations with former Scandinavian monitors of its peace process.

Sweden is to recall its ambassador for consultation, Bildt said.

Miliband and Kouchner would continue their visit as planned, Bildt said.

Bildt said he had been told by Colombo that he would not be received as part of the European team and that he had been given no explanation.

“This is remarkable. You just don’t act this way,” he said.

The diplomatic mission is part of international efforts to put pressure on Sri Lanka to call a ceasefire in the north-east, where the army is battling Tamil Tiger rebels. European Union foreign ministers on Monday joined the UN in the call for the truce.

The Sri Lankan military has restricted the rebels to a small stretch of land and believes final victory is near. (ANI)

Queensland pacer Ben Laughlin called up for Australia’s one-day, Twenty20 squads

Brisbane, Mar.12 (ANI): Queensland fast bowler Ben Laughlin, who has taken 20 wickets at an average of 15.85 to guide his team to the Ford Ranger Cup final, has been called into the Australian squad for the Twenty20 and one-day clashes with South Africa.

Laughlin, 26, snared 3-25 in the final as Queensland stunned hot favourite Victoria.

“Ben has had an extremely good summer for Queensland and was instrumental in their one-day final victory,” chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said.

“Ben will add to the versatility of the Australian bowling line up as we continue to look at options progressing forward to the 2011 World Cup.”

Australia will rest Test pacers Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus for the limited-overs series, which include two Twenty20 and five one-day internationals.

“Both Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle are being rested from the South African one-day series as part of their workload management to prepare for their possible inclusion in key upcoming events which include the World Twenty20 and the Ashes,” Hilditch said.

“Both Peter and Ben had significant injuries during the 2008 off-season.

“Since returning to cricket they have had a demanding and heavy Australian season and will have completed three back-to-back Test matches in South Africa.

“The recommendation of the coaching and fitness staff was that they have time off now to allow them to recuperate and then commence a structured training program in ideal preparation potentially for the World Twenty20 and the Ashes.”

NSW blaster Dave Warner and Victorian bowler Shane Harwood have been included in the squad only for the two Twenty20 matches.

Australia: Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Clarke (vice-capt), Nathan Bracken, Callum Ferguson, Brett Geeves, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, James Hopes, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Ben Laughlin, Adam Voges, Cameron White, David Warner, Shane Harwood. (ANI)
