Pakistani woman allowed to marry prisoner on death row

Lahore, May 13 (IANS) The High Court in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore has allowed a woman to marry a prisoner, who has been awarded death sentence but challenged his conviction in the Supreme Court.

Laiba Sehar had moved the court seeking permission to marry her fiance Atiq-ur-Rahman, who was sentenced to death in a case of kidnapping for ransom in 2002.

The High Court Wednesday asked the jail authorities to make arrangements for the wedding and said that the ceremony must be held in the office of the prison chief, Xinhua reported.

Laiba Sehar in her application had complained that her request for the marriage with her 28-year-old fiance was turned down by the prison officials.

Jail authorities told the court that there is no section in prison regulations to allow a prisoner to get married.

Syed Mazhar Hussain, the applicant’s lawyer, argued that marriage is a fundamental right of everyone and no citizen could be deprived of the right.

He informed the court that the convict has moved the Supreme Court against his conviction and his application was pending in the apex court.

Earlier this week, government of southern Sindh province allowed wives of prisoners to stay overnight with their spouses in jails once in a month.

How the Great Thar Desert trip changed Abbey Clancy’s life

London, March 30 (ANI): Abbey Clancy, fiance of England football star Peter Crouch, has admitted that her trip to Great Thar Desert in India gave her a much-needed wake-up call about her privileged existence.

For 10 days, Abbey and her mum Karen joined a gipsy family as they crossed the desert by camel to perform a dance at a fair.

And the extraordinary journey – part of a new three-part ITV2 series, The Parent Trip – changed her life.

“My holidays normally consist of lying by the pool in a nice bikini with a strawberry daiquiri,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

“All my family holidays have been in Spain and Europe. I’ve never ventured out that far and I certainly haven’t experienced anything like that in my life.

“I was just mortified. I was terrified of every little thing.

“I’ve been wrapped up in cotton wool my whole life, which is probably quite a bad thing. I was just so upset and shocked at things, like seeing starving dogs and cows. It really upset me.

“It was really, really intimidating because they can’t speak a word of English. I was traumatised and was crying.

“But as the days went on we started to get to know people. And I know it sounds like a cliche but we really did become part of their family and I ended up loving every second of it. I didn’t want to come home,” she added. (ANI)

Groom escapes flood to attend wedding

Dave McIntyre from near Taroom has been flooded in on his property for the past two weeks but has finally made it out.

He is due to marry his fiance Megan Lawlor tomorrow on the Sunshine Coast and the bride-to-be says the big wet has added to the pre-wedding stress.

“I was a little bit nervous and every time I called, ‘can you get out yet – can you get out’, it was always ‘no, no, no’ … so it sort of felt like it was going on forever,” Ms Lawlor said.

“Two weeks of having Dave stuck was a little bit nerve-racking.

“It’s going to be a good story in years to come, it was very unexpected but it’s been great to have the rain.”

Curry attack survivor says life’s stopped

LONDON: Indian origin Gurjeet Choongh, who survived being poisoned by her fiance’s former lover, spoke out on media for the first time on Thursday afternoon, saying she feels her life “has stopped.” Her husband-to-be, Lakhvinder Cheema, succumbed to a lethal element mixed in a chicken curry.

Lakhvir Kaur Singh, 45, a married mother of three, who had been having an affair with Cheema for 16 years, was found guilty of murder by a jury last month and sentenced to 23 years in prison. Britain has long dispensed with the death penalty. It transpired that she found it repulsive that her paramour was going to marry Choongh.

Choongh, 22, told BBC: “I feel very tense and that my life has stopped.” Adding a sense of poignancy, she said: “First you think you will get married and start a new life, but this has changed. I still have those memories of my future with him (Cheema), but he has gone and it is finished. I constantly think about what my future is going to be and about what has happened. And it makes me very upset.”

Meet Prince Charles and Camilla, the ‘wedding planners’!

London, Sept 20 (ANI): Prince Charles and wife Camilla are turning wedding planners and “loaning out” their country retreat of Highgrove House to wannabe brides and grooms.

And included in the package will be the royal couple’s shared “expertise”.

Like Charles and Camilla did at their Windsor wedding four years ago, couples will be encouraged to “keep it simple”, say reports.

As per rumours, the first pair to enjoy a “Charles and Camilla wedding” are TV babe Jenni Falconer and her actor fiancé James Midgley, reports The Daily Star.

A royal source said: “Obviously with it being their house they would want control of the event. But they also recognise what a great opportunity it would be to showcase their home.

“Highgrove is an absolutely fantastic building and would make a wonderful venue for a wedding and reception.”

The nine-bedroom country house on a 37-acre estate near Tetbury, Gloucestershire, was bought for Charles in 1980.

A source said: “Charles is hugely proud of Highgrove. It’s a wonderful property and he has spent thousands of pounds on the gardens and grounds. I’m sure by holding weddings there Charles would take great pleasure being the host.

“And he could use them to promote the Duchy Originals organic products he’s involved with.” (ANI)

Gardening helped Michelle Williams cope with Heath Ledger’s death

London, September 17 (ANI): Michelle Williams has revealed that gardening helped her cope with the death of her former fiance Heath Ledger.

The actress gave birth to the late star’s daughter Matilda, who was just 2 years old when Ledger died last year of an accidental drug overdose.

The Brokeback Mountain star, who had parted ways from Ledger months before his death, said planting new life in her garden at home helped her gain strength to deal with the grief.

“My friends never really left me alone when we came up here. One got me gardening in the spring and that’s when it all turned around,” the Daily Express quoted her as telling Vogue magazine.

“I remember being on my hands and knees. The ground was cold and muddy. I pushed back the dead leaves and saw green shoots of spring.

“Under all this decay something was growing. Caring for the garden reminded me to care for myself,” she added. (ANI)

Bride-to-be dies after going on 500 calories-a-day diet before wedding

London, Sep 9 (ANI): A Brit bride-to-be is said to have died after she went on a 500 calories-a-day diet plan, in a bid to lose weight before her wedding.

It was revealed at an inquest that Samantha Clowe, 34, was “fit and well” when she started the diet, but passed away 11 weeks later, after losing three stone from her original 17st 6lb.

Clowe, a metal researcher, had got her GP’s approval before she started the LighterLife diet of special soup, bars and shakes.

Her fiance Andrew Smith found her collapsed at the home they shared in Leeds.

“She said she wanted respect at work and didn’t want to be a fat bride,” the Daily Star quoted her mother Barbara as saying at the inquest.

Pathologist Dr Alfredo Walker said a post-mortem failed to establish a cause of death.

“It may be related to her low calorie diet and weight loss,” he said.

Coroner David Hinchliff, who recorded a narrative verdict, said Clowe probably died from cardiac arrhythmia, when the heart stops.

“LighterLife is a clinically monitored programme and has helped 150,000 people lose weight,” a LighterLife spokesman said.

“When she died she was still clinically obese,” he added. (ANI)

Rose McGowan loses elbow part during new film stunt

Washington, Sep 9 (ANI): Rose McGowan has lost some part of her elbow after suffering serious injury on the sets of her new film ‘Red Sonja’, which is being directed by her fiance Robert Rodriguez.

While last year, the ‘Scream’ star was quite upbeat about her stunts in the she-devil comic book adaptation, but now her injury has brought the production to a standstill.

“I had wrist and elbow surgery and they took part of my elbow out. I had really bad nerve damage from doing stunts – I do a lot of my own stunts,” Fox News quoted McGowan as saying.

“I could no longer use my arm, but now I can hold a fork and drive so we’re working our way up. It’ll probably be another six months of rehab, but It’s the price you pay for being really limber and being able to do back flips!” she added.

However, despite her Hollywood success, the 35-year-old actress had initially thought being an actress was a pretty pathetic profession.

“I wasn’t trying to be an actor, I was standing outside of a gym waiting for my friend to come out and this woman he knew kept saying, ‘She should be in this movie blah blah blah’ and I was like, ‘Gross, I don’t want to be an actor! Ew!’ and then I found out they would pay me enough money for a down payment on an apartment,” said McGowan.

“Otherwise I would have had to go back and live with dad in Seattle. The film, ‘The Doomed Generation,’ became this huge cult movie and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and I’ve been following the Yellow Brick Road ever since…” she added. (ANI)

But Clinton’s spokesman Matt McKenna, who’s been denying the purported union for months, said that he’d wager 1,000 dollars it’s not on.

“I know this spot on Chappy very well, and I know the two brides who will get married there this coming weekend (on different days — not to each other),” the New York Post quoted Democrat Serena Torrey Roosevelt as writing on Facebook.

“Neither of them is Chelsea,” she added. (ANI)
