Motor racing-Ferrari fined $100,000 for illegal team orders

July 25 (Reuters) – Ferrari were fined $100,000 by stewards on Sunday for the use of illegal ‘team orders’ in winning the German Formula One Grand Prix.

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) also said in a statement that the case would be referred to its world motorsport council for further consideration.

The team, whose drivers finished first and second after Brazilian Felipe Massa allowed Spaniard Fernando Alonso to overtake him, were found to have breached both the sporting regulations and code.

Article 39.1 of the sporting regulations states that “team orders which interfere with the result of the race are prohibited”.

GM to invest $384.6 million more in Brazil factories

(Reuters) – General Motors GM.UL will invest an additional 700 million reais ($384.62 million) to modernize and boost production at a plant in Brazil, one of the world’s largest auto markets, the company said on Monday.

The investment will be used to renew the current line of production at the Sao Caetano do Sul plant in Sao Paulo state that produces models including Classic, Corsa, and Vectra, the U.S. automaker said in a statement.

Brazil is GM’s third largest market after the United States and China. The company had sales of 206,600 cars in the first quarter of 2010, a 26 percent increase over the previous year.

Global automakers are expected to invest up to $11.2 billion in Brazil over the next two years to meet demand for vehicles in Latin America’s largest economy.

In late March, GM said it would invest 1.4 billion reais to modernize and expand its Sao Caetano do Sul and Mogi das Cruzes plants, both in Sao Paulo state.

The investment focuses on the renewal of the Chevrolet production line, including two new models to be produced for the Brazilian market and for export.

The new funds for the plant are part of a long-term strategy of investments of 5 billion reais between 2008 and 2012 to increase production capacity and renew the company’s portfolio of Chevrolet vehicles in the South American country.

Brazil is also a major market for Italy’s Fiat SpA (FIA.MI), Germany’s Volkswagen AG (VOWG.DE), and U.S.-based Ford Motor Co (F.N).

Automobile output in Brazil, the world’s fifth-biggest auto market, jumped 14.2 percent in April from a year earlier to 290,000 units as automakers pushed up production to meet a surge in demand in export and local markets.

INTERVIEW – Cosworth able to engage fifth team – head

Cosworth would be able to supply engines to a fifth Formula One team next season but expect competition from Renault, according to manager Mark Gallagher.

Renault last week indicated that they were looking to power another team in addition to their own and championship leaders Red Bull, triggering speculation that Cosworth could lose one of their four current customers — possibly Williams or Lotus.

Gallagher, who heads Cosworth’s F1 operations, told Reuters in a telephone interview before Sunday’s Turkish Grand Prix that he was sure all four would stay with the British-based company and suggested Renault were more likely to do a deal with a possible new entry.

The governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) has sought applications to fill the 13th and final slot on the grid, unless anyone else pulls out, after a planned USF1 entry failed to materialise this year.

“The obvious solution (for Renault) is actually the 13th team that is coming into Formula One,” said Gallagher. “My gut feeling is that it is probably a Cosworth-Renault competition to supply the 13th team.”

Mercedes and Ferrari already supply three teams each. Cosworth’s current teams are Williams, HRT, Virgin Racing and Lotus.

Gallagher said providing engines for five teams would be ambitious but feasible, since they would have supplied USF1.

“It certainly wouldn’t be a problem to step up to the mark again and do it for next season,” he added.

STRONG ENOUGH

The Northern Irishman, who formerly worked at Jaguar and as marketing chief for Eddie Jordan at the team that now lives on as Force India, said there were a couple of serious candidates capable of filling the 13th slot.

“There are still teams out there that are strong enough,” he said. “I think, interestingly, the people this time around have seen what has happened to the new teams, they’ve seen just how difficult it is.

“I think anyone who is coming forward now comes forward…perhaps with their eyes even more open.”

None of the 2010 newcomers, who have all signed three-year engine deals, have scored a point in six races and just getting two cars to the finish has been a victory of sorts.

Gallagher said all three debutants had done an impressive job while Cosworth had delivered what they had promised in terms of reliability and affordability. That just left competitiveness to be addressed.

Former champions Williams, he made clear, were pushing them hard on that.

“The whole reason we jumped at the chance to work with Williams is that when you have a driver like (Rubens) Barrichello, who’s proven to everybody that he’s still at the top of his game, he was going to tell us exactly what we needed to do to optimise the engine’s performance,” he said.

“When you are working with people like (Lotus technical head Mike) Gascoyne and (Williams co-owner) Patrick Head, they are able to say ‘This is where you need to be at’ and we are comfortable that we met or surpassed those targets,” he added.

“We have no fear of any other engine in Formula One,” added Gallagher. “Of course having been out of Formula One for three years, we are having to do things to get the engine mapping right and the programming to optimise the way the engine delivers its power.

“But we are making improvements literally every race weekend and we are seeing the result of that on the track.”

Gallagher also played down talk of an impending flotation of Cosworth, who were sold by Ford to U.S. based motor racing entrepreneurs Kevin Kalkhoven and Gerald Forsythe in 2004.

“This is pure speculation and we kind of accept that this will happen from time to time,” he said.

“We are seeing something like 30 percent year on year growth and that’s not all down to Formula One. As a result of that we are often the target of various approaches and then you get the media speculation that comes on from that.”

Australian Grand Prix too dark: FIA

The controversial starting time of the Australian Grand Prix could be changed after light tests by international governing body FIA deemed the Albert Park circuit too dark during last week’s race.

Several drivers complained about the 5:00pm start time for the Formula One race, which was not aided by gloomy and overcast conditions towards the finish.

The drivers’ main issue beforehand had been with the low level of the sun at that time and the danger that could pose, but a light meter test by the FIA showed the light was below the minimum demanded for night race conditions.

Leading motorsport website autosport.com says the FIA will recommend the start time be moved forward by up to an hour for the 2011 race.

The decision to start the Australian Grand Prix at the later time of 5:00pm was first introduced last year to make the race more accessible to a European television morning audience.

Polish driver Robert Kubica, who finished second in Melbourne behind McLaren’s Jenson Button, had a radical suggestion that is unlikely to find favour with spectators.

“Last year when we had this big shift [of start time], we knew what the reason was,” Kubica told the website.

“But then I say, let’s do it early in the morning so it is Saturday evening in Europe.

“I think after Australia we complained already twice. The FIA did some measurements and it is clear it is too dark for them for the safety target they are putting.

“It is a serious problem and this year was very dark in Australia and the year before the sun was very low, which was very dangerous.”

A final decision on the start time of the race rests with Australian Grand Prix organisers and Formula One commercial boss Bernie Ecclestone.

Branson shock: Virgin F1 car’s fuel tank too small to finish races

Melbourne, Mar 27(ANI): British billionaire businessman Richard Branson’s Virgin Formula One Team will not be able to finish their races after it was revealed that their car fuel tanks lack capacity to propel them to the finish line.

Fuel tanks have to hold around 210 litres of petrol this year after refuelling was banned, but the tanks on the VR-01 are around 25 litres too small, leaving them 10 laps too short.

Without a bigger fuel tank, the Virgin team cannot finish races if they go at top speed.

According to reports, Virgin will have to shell out a million pounds to design a new tank, but the revamped cars are unlikely to be ready for at least another five races.

Meanwhile, Virgin technical director Nick Wirth said the team has got permission from the FIA to change the tanks on safety grounds.

“It has become clear during pre-season testing and our debut race in Bahrain that our fuel tank capacity is marginal. If not addressed, there is the possibility fuel pick-up could become an issue in certain circumstances,” The Sun quoted Wirth, as saying.

“At the time the design of the tank was locked down in June 2009, its capacity was determined by a number of factors, some of which have since changed. That tank capacity now needs to be increased accordingly,” he added.

The Bicester-based Virgin team is one of the three new teams featuring on the grid this year. (ANI)

F-1 drivers slam twilight timing of ”dangerous” Australian Grand Prix

Melbourne, Mar. 26 (ANI): Leading Formula One drivers have slammed the “extremely dangerous” twilight timing of the Australian Grand Prix.

With the race moved to a 5 p.m. (AEDT) start time, a mix of shadows and bright setting sun unnerved many drivers last year – but their complaints went unheeded.

The later start was made in a bid to attract a larger European television audience – yet there is compelling evidence to suggest that has not happened.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Red Bull star Mark Webber, Lotus veteran Jarno Trulli and Renault”s Robert Kubica all complained about the difficult conditions they are forced to drive in at high speed.

Kubica was scathing about the timing.

“Last year it was extremely dangerous the last 20 laps of the race,” the Pole said.

“Going through the last corner was like going through a blind place, it was impossible to see,” he added.

“It”s not nice to go in an F1 car through a corner where it”s really very difficult to see anything. To be honest, I am surprised to see it was this time,” he said.

Trulli said last year the drivers” complaints were ignored.

“We raised our concerns last year, but apparently nothing has changed,” Trulli said.

“We have given our opinion and that”s it and the FIA or whoever has decided to keep a twilight race at that time. We just have to deal with it,” he added.

Trulli said apparently the only way to effect a change was to tell authorities they loved the start time – then it would be changed.

Webber said Trulli had “hit it on the head”.

“If you picked the best time to have a high-speed sporting motor race event obviously it”s not when the sun is at eye level with us,” he said. (ANI)

Button denies cheating claims on McLaren car’s radical aero device

London, Mar 13 (ANI): Formula One champion Jenson Button launched a fierce defence of his McLaren team last night, saying that they are not cheats.

Button and teammate Lewis Hamilton impressive start to the new F1 season in Bahrain on Friday was overshadowed by a row over their car’s radical aero device, which gives them a six mph advantage on long straights.

Even though motor sport chiefs have declared the system legal, rival teams have not ruled out lodging a protest if either Button or Hamilton win Sunday’s race.

“Our wing is an exciting and ingenious design which has been passed by the FIA and it is working OK,” The Sun quoted Button, as saying. .

The device works by affecting the airflow from the car and stopping the rear wing pushing downwards on straights, which reduces drag and increases speed.

But other teams hit out at the F-duct vent system, saying McLaren had opened up another arms race one year after the diffuser row involving Button’s then Brawn GP team.

Renault boss Bob Bell said: “It is fundamentally clear the McLaren wing design is totally illegal. They have driven a carthorse through the spirit of the rules and regulations.”

Lotus’ technical director Mike Gascoyne added: “The aerodynamics on the McLaren are changing all the time. Whether the driver is doing it with the knee or not, the fact remains it is not the same all the time so it’s a moveable aerodynamic device. It is a pretty silly interpretation because everyone is going to go and do it. We’ll all spend loads of money and for what?” (ANI)

UK-born child’s abduction has tarnished Pak image: Malik

Islamabad, Mar 8(ANI): Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik has said the abduction of five-year-old UK-born Sahil Saeed has tarnished the image of the country and joint investigations were underway for the immediate recovery of the boy.

Some unknown persons had kidnapped Sahil on last Wednesday after terrorising his family at a time when his father Raja Naqash Saeed was waiting for a taxi to leave for airport.

The boy has not been recovered despite tall claims of the federal and provincial governments regarding his early recovery.

Addressing the media after meeting the parents of the abducted child at his house in Jhelum, Malik said: “The action of the abductors had created a bad image of the country before those Pakistani who are living abroad. The kidnappers will be dealt with an iron hand.”

He said that provincial government was thoroughly investigating into the case with all possible angles and a possible breakthrough was expected in the next couple of days.

Malik also highlighted his satisfaction over the investigations being done by police, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and other agencies.

“The members of the family of the child have shared a very useful information with the investigators and it will prove helpful in his recovery,” he said.

The Minister further said the involvement of a close family member of the child in the incident could not be ruled out and the police were also looking the matter with reference to this angle. (ANI)

600 kg of explosives used in Lahore car bomb blast, death toll 11

Lahore, Mar 8(ANI): At least 11 people, including a young schoolgirl and her mother, were killed and 61 others injured, when a suicide bomber rammed his car laden with 600 kilograms of explosives into the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) office in Lahore on Monday.

The injured included 13 women, who were rushed to Jinnah hospital here.

According to reports, the suicide bomber rammed his car into the main gate of the FIA building, where suspects are usually kept under interrogation, at 8.15 a.m.

Witnesses said the FIA building has completely collapsed and a number of people are still buried under the rubble, The Dawn reports.

TV reports said some of the neighbouring buildings had also been damaged in the explosion.

A number of schools and religious institutions are located in the neighbourhood known as Model Town. The area is considered as most secure area with 60 security gates and except four, all gates are closed after 10 p.m.

A number of prominent politicians, including the former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif live in Model Town.

There was no immediately claim of responsibility for the blast, which came after a lull of several months in attacks on military and security targets in Pakistan’s main cities by Al-Qaeda militants and their affiliates in the Pakistani Taliban.

Meanwhile, security levels have been raised to high alert across the city.

The quantity of explosives used in the bombing is 100 kilograms more than the quantity used in the Islamabad Marriott Hotel bombing in September 2008, when a dump truck filled with explosives detonated in front of the hotel, killing at least 54 people and injuring at least 266.

The explosion had left a 20-meter wide deep crater outside the hotel. (ANI)

Police swoop on sellers of Jaswant Singh’s pirated book in Pak

Lahore, Sep.18 (ANI): Expelled Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaswant Singh’s book on Mohammad Ali Jinnah has sent the Pakistani book piracy nexus working overtime, but it has also landed people in police custody.

Pakistani security agencies have arrested three people for selling pirated editions of the book ‘Jinnah: India, Partition, Independence,’ following a countrywide crackdown on publishers and sellers of counterfeit editions of the controversial yet popular book.

Several fake copies of the book have also been recovered and cases have been registered in Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi and Lahore, The Daily Times reported.

Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officials said the action was taken on a complaint filed by Tariq Haq, regional sales head of the Oxford University Press (OUP).

Tariq said the OUP had the sole rights of publication and distribution of the book and the company is facing heavy losses due to large scale piracy of the book.

Singh’s book which has created a furor in India, has received an overwhelming response in Pakistan.

Not only intellectuals, but people from different strata of the society have also shown interest in the book, in which Singh has praised Muhammad Ali Jinnah and described him as a leader who had strong faith in united India, while blaming Sardar Patel for the partition in 1947. (ANI)

FIA to reconstruct Benazir Bhutto’s assassination scene

Rawalpindi, Aug. 31 (ANI): In order to remove the ambiguity in the Benazir Bhutto murder case, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency, in association with other intelligence agencies, is planning to reconstruct the scene of late Pakistan prime minister’s assassination.

The Daily Times quoted official sources as saying that a new joint investigation team would reconstruct the crime scene because the original crime scene had not been preserved properly.

They are likely to put together pre- and post-bombing visual clips to draw a sketch of the scene, they added.

Bhutto was killed in December 2007 as she left a rally of her Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) supporters in Rawalpindi.

A United Nations inquiry into Bhutto’s assassination is also going on. (ANI)

Pak anti-terror court seeks record of Mumbai attacks suspect

Rawalpindi, Aug.30 (ANI): The Adiala jail special anti-terrorism court has asked the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to produce record of the arrest of Jamil Ahmed, one of the Mumbai terror attacks suspects, by September 1.

Ahmed has sought post-arrest bail on various legal grounds, the Daily Times.

Earlier, the court adjourned the hearing into the trial of five Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants, including the outfit’s operations commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi, till September 5.

The special Adiala Jail court also restricted the in-camera trial of the five accused of the Mumbai terror attacks citing security reasons.

Though the court’s order has not been made public, sources said it stated that the proceedings would be kept totally secret and ‘not published’ in any manner as the case had implications for ‘national security’ and ‘national interests’.

The trial court also asked the FIA to submit its finding before it during the next hearing.

While Lakhvi is accused of masterminding the attack, the four others, including LeT’s communications expert Zarar Shah, Abu al-Qama, Hamad Amin Sadiq and Shahid Jamil Riaz are being charged as facilitators, manager of funds and for locating hideouts for the attackers Rawalpindi.

Meanwhile, the United States has asked the court to grant permission to attend the trial as ‘observers’.

A US embassy spokesman said American officials have moved an application in the court seeking permission to attend the trial.

It may be recalled that there were at least six US nationals among the 166 people who were killed in the November 26-29, 2008 terror attacks. (ANI)

Al-Qaeda gave millions to ISI to bribe politicians, claims former FIA chief

Lahore, Aug.28 (ANI): In a startling revelation, a former Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) director Malik Mumtaz has disclosed that Al-Qaeda had given millions of rupees to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to destabilise the Benazir Bhutto’s government in 1988.

Mumtaz claimed that ISI had hatched a massive conspiracy involving former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, former ISI chief General (retired) Asad Durrani, Brigadier (retired) Imtiaz and Major (retired) Amir to overthrow the Bhutto government.

He said Osama bin Laden was behind the conspiracy and had paid millions of dollars to the ISI, The Daily Times reports.

In an interview with a private television, Mumtaz said one of his close friends had told him that the ISI was in the look out for Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) legislators who would change side and join the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

When asked whether he was too a part of the conspiracy, Mumtaz said he instead informed the PPP leadership about the plot.

Meanwhile, the PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal has rejected the allegations, saying the party never received any money from the intelligence agency.

Iqbal said that such claims were a part of maligning the PML-N leadership.

Former Director General of Intelligence Bureau (IB) Brigadier (retired) Imtiaz also rejected the allegations.

He said the charges were completely false and it was a handiwork of some ‘mysterious elements’ within the PPP who were trying to destabilize the country. (ANI)

Brit car smashes century-old speed record by clocking 225 kms per hour

London, August 26 (ANI): A British-built car has broken the land speed record for steam-powered cars for the first time in more than 100 years, after it achieved an average speed of 225 kilometres per hour.

According to a report in New Scientist, Charles Burnett III has reached speeds of 219 km/hr (136 mph) and 243 km/hr (151 mph) during two drives at California’s Edwards Air Force Base.

That smashes the previous official record of 204 km/hr (127 mph) set in 1906 by Fred Marriott of the US in a modified version of the then-popular steam car known as the Stanley Steamer.

Officials from motor sport’s governing body, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), are expected to ratify the new record shortly.

Burnett drove a 7.6-metre-long, 3-tonne car called “Inspiration” that grew out of a 1997 student project at Southampton University.

The car’s engine burns liquid petroleum gas to heat water in 12 suitcase-sized boilers, creating steam heated to 400 degrees Celsius.

The steam then drives a two-stage turbine that spins at 13,000 revolutions per minute to power its wheels.

The FIA requires two 1.6-km-long runs to be performed in opposite directions – to cancel out any effect from wind – within 60 minutes.

Inspiration made the first run on August 25 and turned around for the return run with just eight minutes to spare.

Before and after each timed run, it took 4 km to accelerate and another 4 km to slow down.

The record-setting drives came after several earlier attempts had been thwarted by electrical faults, valve problems, a storm and a tyre puncture the previous week.

But, the team is planning another run today, to try to get even closer to the car’s theoretical top speed of 274 km/hr (170 mph). (ANI)

Mumbai terror suspect awarded 14 day judicial custody by Rawalpindi court

Rawalpindi, Aug.21 (ANI): An Anti Terrorism Court here has awarded 14 day judicial custody to a Mumbai terror suspect and sent him to the Adiala Jail, where all the other alleged 26/11 suspects are locked.

The suspect, Jamil Ahmed of Battgram, was produced before the court by the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) Special Investigation Unit (SIU) after which the court adjourned the hearing till September 3.

Battgram was arrested by the FIA earlier this month for alleged links with the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the terror group which masterminded the November 26, 2008 Mumbai attacks in which about 200 people were killed and over 150 injured. (ANI)

Centre to constitute a GoM for aviation sector :Patel

New Delhi, Aug 13 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Praful Patel informed on Thursday that the Centre has decided to set up a Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into the issue of jet fuel pricing and demands of the airline industry.

The Union Cabinet took the decision to form a GoM after Patel made a detail presentation on the problems faced by the aviation industry.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Patel assured the delegation of Federation of Indian Airlines (FIA) that he would press for the constitution of GoM to address the problem faced by that sector.

Patel said the industry is likely to grow 8.5 percent annually until 2015.

The GoM would also look into complaints of airlines regarding high sales taxes and high jet fuel costs, said Patel.

“High base price of aviation turbine fuel is a concern,” Patel said. He also added that equity infusion in Air India needed an urgent look. (ANI)

Pak Govt. launches crackdown against text, email propaganda

Islamabad, July 13 (ANI): The Pakistan Government has launched a crackdown against those involved in spreading “propaganda” against senior government officials through emails and text messages.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Sunday announced that the new government campaign aims at limiting the growing number of emails and text messages questioning the government, the Daily Times reports.

According to an interior ministry press release, a similar crackdown has been initiated against a banned organisation, which is spreading malicious propaganda against the Pak Army.

The crackdown requires the director general of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to keep a check on propaganda material, and take necessary action. Under the Cyber Crimes Act, violators can be imprisoned for up to 14 years.

The government has also requested Interpol to identify the owners of any email addresses and websites registered abroad that spread such messages. (ANI)
