Oz lad mags fight porn ban call

Sydney, April 06(ANI): The publishers of adult magazines in Australia have slammed the recommendation of child experts asking for a ban on the sale of the so-called lad mags at places accessible to kids.

A coalition of child experts had written to censorship ministers calling for tighter restrictions on the display of magazines with adult content at milk bars, convenience stores, supermarkets and petrol stations.

ACP Magazines, which publishes magazines such as Ralph, FHM and Zoo, insists that the current restrictions which demand explicit titles to be put in plastic covers and limited sales to those over 18 are adequate.

“We have no issue with a stricter approach to enforcement but we see no need for the bans being proposed,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Scott Briggs, manager of regulatory affairs at PBL Media, the company that owns ACP, as saying.

He mentioned that the children had a far easier access to pornography online.

He added: “You don’t have to go too hard to find it on the internet, and to regulate one aspect of the media without any plans for the other is just a bit naive [if we] think that’s going to make any impact on people’s access to pornography.”

Any change to classification rules would require the support of state and territory censorship ministers, who meet regularly at the standing committee of attorneys-general. (ANI)

Megan Fox feasts on boys in new movie

London, May 11 (ANI): Actress Megan Fox will be seen feasting on boys in the dark comedy and horror film Jennifer’s Body.

The film features the Transformers star, voted the Sexiest Woman in the World by FHM magazine, in the role of a mean-girl cheerleader possessed by a demon who begins feeding off the boys in a farming town.

“It’s a really dark comedy with a lot of secret messages lying underneath the script,” the Daily Star quoted her as saying.

“I play the captain of the flag team and I get improperly sacrificed by this rock band, who are trying to obtain a record deal – so they sell their soul to Satan. They need to sacrifice a virgin.

“I’m not a virgin, so what happens is I get taken over by a demon and, in order to stay alive in this sort of undead period, I have to eat flesh, so I eat boys,” she added.

Revealing as to how she prepared for the role and cooked up her own plot about her character being molested by her father, the 22-year-old said: “It’s not in the script but, in my head, my character was victimised by my dad, so I take it out on the boys in my high school.

She added: “So it’s me eating them and having this bizarre pseudo-lesbian relationship with my best friend. It’s all very manipulative and is basically how frightening young girls can be – they’re completely terrifying.” (ANI)

Queen overshadows Sienna Miller in FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women list

London, April 13 (ANI): Sienna Miller is not as sexy as the Queen, at least that’s what FHM’s latest 100 Sexiest Women list suggests.

However, the magazine’s poll has placed the actress above Home Secretary Jacqui Smith.

“Two years ago Sienna was at number 45 before falling to 70 in 2008. But this year she got only a handful of the 10million votes cast,” the Sun quoted a mag source as saying.

“That leaves her ahead of Jacqui but trailing Queen Elizabeth II and Michelle Obama,” the source added.

Mag editor Chris Bell said: “Maybe it’s the credit crunch or that Sienna is a bit annoying, but men seem to be rejecting privileged It-girl types like her.”

The FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women list is to be announced on April 23. (ANI)

Men’s magazines sales plunge as health titles soar

Melbourne, Feb 16 (ANI): The popularity of men’s magazines seems to be taking a downturn, for health titles have emerged as a bright spot in the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations report.

The popularity has seen a major decline in the six months to December.

Healthy Food Guide emerged as the most popular with year-on-year sales of 24 per cent.

The second spot went to HealthSmart with up to 19 per cent sales, followed by Women’s Health with 15.3 per cent sales on the third.

Men’s Health came third with 10.7 per cent and followed by Diabetic Living with 9.6 per cent sales at fourth.

“The overall market for the six months to December 08 is exhibiting some early effects of the global economic crisis,” the Australian quoted NDD as saying.

“There is little good news in the market with so many negative results.

“The health and wellbeing sub-category has emerged as the main survivor,” he added.

Men’s magazines took a massive sales hit with the sales of FHM plummeting to 24.2 per cent, followed by Ralph with 22 per cent, and Alpha with 16 per cent reduction.

Popular fashion weekly Grazia’s sales slipped from 70,000 copies in the September quarter to 65,000 in the December quarter.

However, Lynette Phillips, publishing and sales director of ACP women’s lifestyle titles, said that she was pleased with its circulation.

“It has flattened out to a nice figure we can work on,” she said.

She predicted magazine sales had now bottomed.

“We were always going to be hit in women’s lifestyle because … that is reflective of consumer confidence,” she said.

“Year on year it doesn’t look good but period on period we’re really seeing it has now flattened out,” she added. (ANI)
