Price of electricity to increase by Rs one per unit: Shinde

New Delhi, May 20 (ANI): Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said here today that the price of electricity would increase by Rs one per unit following the increase in the prices of natural gas.

The government on Wednesday revised administrative pricing mechanism of natural gas.
CNG will become costly by about 20 per cent and the price of natural gas has also doubled.

The government has revised the administrative price mechanism of natural gas from Rs 3200 to Rs 6,118. It was last revised last in 2005.

The revision was considered essential. Power and fertiliser sectors are the major customers of Indian gas are. The cost of production for fertiliser plants is expected to go up but it will be offset by government subsidy.

Since the fertilisers are subsidised, the revision is not likely to have much impact on fertiliser prices, but for the power sector, the over-all increase would be 2.75 per cent.

The government is likely to earn an additional revenue of Rs 3500 crore per annum from ad valorem taxes.

OIL is expected to gain Rs 500-Rs 700 crore per annum while ONGC is likely to earn Rs 6000-Rs 7000 crore more per annum. (ANI)

Review finds murky waterways

The Tweed Shire Council in northern New South Wales says an assessment of the Cobaki and Terranora broadwaters has found the water is murkier than it should be.

The leader of the council’s Waterways Program, Tom Alletson, says land clearing, soil erosion and the use of fertilisers have contributed to the situation.

He says the problem can affect fish stocks.

“If seagrass does not get enough light and doesn’t flourish that means there’s less habitat for juvenile fish and if you have no small fish you have no big fish either, so it’s how the quality of the land affects the quality of the water and if you don’t have good quality water the amenity value of the region and its recreational potential reduces as well,” he said.

WAFF urges fertiliser contracts caution

The Western Australian Farmers Federation (WAFF) is urging producers to be cautious after it says a fertiliser company reneged on its fixed price contracts.

The federation says Superfert has reneged on its contracts, charging farmers up to $70 extra per tonne.

The company is now proposing farmers sign a deed of variation.

The federation’s Mike Norton says that could affect the ability of farmers to cope financially.

“Farmers need to be very careful when they sign this deed of agreement that it doesn’t blanket out the obligation that the particular company doesn’t have the right to increase those fixed price contracts,” he said.

Collie fertiliser plant gets federal boost

The federal Minister for Regional Development, Anthony Albanese, has backed a $3.5 billion fertiliser plant proposed for Collie.

The Minister has granted Major Protection Facilitation status to the Perdaman Chemicals and Fertilisers’ project.

Conferring the status is aimed at supporting private sector investment proposals through the approvals process.

The plant, which is expected to convert up to four million tonnes of coal into fertiliser each year, would be the first of its kind in Australia.

The project is currently awaiting environmental approvals.

Farmers protest against hike in petrol and diesel prices

New Delhi, Mar 5 (ANI): Hundreds of farmers from northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana converged in the national capital to stage a mass protest rally against the UPA Government’s policies on Friday.

This rally by farmers vented their ire at the steep rises in the prices of fuel and fertilizers and demanded that the federal government should give them adequate rates for their farm produce.

Farmers from the northern states of Haryana and Punjab owning allegiance to the Bharatiya Kisan Union commenced their rally from the Ramalila Grounds in the national capital and culminated it at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.

Later, the police personnel stopped them near Patel Chowk from proceeding ahead. The protestors then staged a sit-in protest on the road, leading to traffic jams to jams.

“We are taking out this rally because the farmers are upset with the federal government”s plans and policies. By reducing the prices of wheat and hiking the prices of fertilisers and diesel, the government has burdened us heavily and this protest is in regard to the same,” said Sewa Singh Arya, General Secretary, Bharatiya Kisan Union, Haryana.

“We want that the hiked rates of fuels and fertilisers should be rolled back and we should get profitable prices for our produce so that the consumer and the producers are both satisfied.

“Today, the main problem is that the farmers and consumers are both unhappy because the vegetables are bought at very low prices in the market from us and the intermediaries earn a hefty amount by selling it at much higher prices to the consumer,” added Sewa Singh.

It may be recalled that the UPA government had announced an increase of only rupees 20 (45 cents) per quintal for wheat for the 2010-11 season.

However, the farmers contended that the amount spent on producing the commodity is much more and the farmers want that the minimum support price (MSP) of wheat (per quintal) should be fixed at 2436 rupees.

They also demanded for loan waivers for farmers with less than 10 acres of cultivation land and also to provide government jobs for marginal farmers who do not have sufficient agricultural piece of land.

“Our farming expenditure has increased manifold. So much so that we may be forced to leave the profession of agriculture. We will then just produce for ourselves. There is such a heavy burden of loans on us and that is why we, the farmers are forced to compelled to resort to committing suicides,” observed Kuldeep Singh, a farmer from Punjab. (ANI)

Centre to revive closed fertilizer units

New Delhi, Mar 5 (ANI): The Union Government on Friday informed the Rajya Sabha that it would explore the feasibility of revival of closed public sector fertilizer units of Hindustan Fertilizer Corporation Ltd. (HFCL) and Fertilizer Corporation of India Ltd (FCIL).

Replying to a question, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilisers Srikant Kumar Jena said the government is also looking for availability of natural gas, to meet the emerging demand production gap of urea in the country.

“An Empowered Committee of Secretaries (ECOS) has been constituted with the mandate to evaluate all investment options for revival of the closed units of FCIL/HFCL and to make suitable recommendations for consideration of the Government,” Jena said.

“The ECOS has considered various possible investment options for revival of each of the closed units and have finalized its recommendations regarding the suitable options. The recommendations of ECOS are under consideration of the Government,” he added.

The revival of closed plants is likely to reduce the supply and demand gap regarding availability of urea in the country.

As regards prices of urea to the farmers, Jena said urea is made available to farmers at same maximum retail price irrespective of imported or indigenously produced. (ANI)

A call centre to aid farmers in Abohar

Abohar, May 30 (ANI): A non-resident Indian has come up with a novel way to help farmers to manage their farm by giving suggestions regarding hiring farm machinery, fertilisers, and the like.

Equipped with five computers and handsets, this call centre in Fazilka has come as a boon for farmers in Punjab.

Zamindara Farm Solutions, an initiative of NRI-turned-farmer Vikram Ahuja, offers agricultural equipment to farmers at a nominal rent.

“Farmers in Punjab are turning towards ‘tractorization’ and not mechanization. There are around 15 lakh families in the state owning 10 million acres of land. The machinery they require for an average 5-6 acres of land is not available and they own machinery, which generally they don’t need. Realizing the fact, we are providing machinery on rent rather asking them to buy it,” said Vikram Ahuja, owner of the Zamindara Farm Solutions.

Marginal farmers can now hire expensive and sophisticated farm tilling, sowing and harvesting machinery.

Zamindara Farm Solutions has over 4000 farmer members who besides hiring farm machinery also take its advise for crop diversification.

The company’s motto is to make farmers debt-free by reducing farming costs.

Rai Singh of Fazilka hired machinery to dig a pipeline in his farm and has saved both time and money.

“We have benefited a lot by using these machines. It saves time. Earlier, we used to hire labourers for this work, who took take time to complete the work but now the problem has been solved,” said Rai Singh, farmer.

Zamindara Farm Solutions also provide laser-leveling technique to farmers.

The process of land laser-leveling helps bring land to near-flatness with a slight gradation for drainage. This reduces consumption of water and improves crop productivity.

Apart from catering to individual farmers, this centre outsources its services to farm products producer group Haryali and it has also done a pilot project with Punjab Agro and Punjab agriculture department.

“Almost 30-40 percent of a farmer’s income is spent on machinery. Our aim is to reduce the cost to 8-10 percent. This way farmers’ net profit will increase by almost 30 percent. Even if the yield remains the same, their net profit will rise after expenses,” said Vikram Ahuja, owner of Zamindara Farm Solutions.

This concept has worked successfully among farmers in South-west Punjab.

Now farmers from other regions of Punjab and neighboring states have started consulting Zamindara Farm Solutions. By Avtar Gill (ANI)

Uttarakhand farmers benefit from hi-tech farming

Nainital, Mar. 22 (ANI): Farmers in Uttarakhand are reaping it rich by cultivating vegetables, fruits and flowers by using hi-tech methods like greenhouse farming.

Government’s Horticulture Technology Mission has initiated several benefiting schemes for the farmers in Padampuri region near Nainital.

The schemes include providing good quality seeds, fertilisers and insecticides at subsidised rates to the farmers. Technical and financial aids are also given to set up poly greenhouses to cultivate various fruits and flowers.

“We are enjoying lot of benefits. I have also applied for a motor and the scheme will help me get it. Overall, the scheme is very beneficial. Those who really want to reap the benefit can take advantage of it,” said Tarachand Saini, a farmer.

The scheme particularly benefit farmers in mountainous region, where crops are subject to vagaries of nature like incessant rains during monsoon season.

“The scheme is very successful. Small farmers are joining it. All that they need is motivation,” opined Praveen Sharma, a Padampuri based floriculturist.

Out of forty percent subsidies extended to the farmers, the Union Government bears twenty percent of the overall cost. (ANI)

Lalu says no rift within UPA

New Delhi, Feb. 21 (ANI): Railway minister Lalu Prasad Yadav on Saturday said there were no differences among various constituents of the United Progressive Alliance.

Political churnings had earlier suggested that rifts were beginning to widen between Lalu’s Rashtrya Janta Dal and Lok Janshakthi Party of Union Fertilisers and Chemicals Minister Ram Vilas Paswan with the nearing of the general election.

But Lalu denied any trouble between RJD and LJD saying both the parties were loyal to the UPA.

“There is no confusion. We are having discussions with everybody. I met Paswanji (chief of Lok Janshakthi Party) at a function last night. Our alliance is UPA, and we want to contest election together. So when we have to come together anyway, there is no point in haggling,” Prasad said on the sidelines of an award function in New Delhi.

Prasad said he was not averse to forging an alliance with the Communist parties that had quit the ruling coalition over the nuclear deal with the US.

“Communists are our permanent friends…. Yes, we can,” said Prasad.

General elections will be held sometime in May, the dates have not been finalized yet and the main contest this year is likely to be between the Congress party and Bharatiya Janata Party. (ANI)

Physically disabled helping smugglers across India-Nepal border

Gorakhpur, Jan.12: (ANI): Trade routes between India and Nepal, which pass through the north Indian states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal are misused by smugglers who employ physically disabled persons.

Many people from both the sides of the border are involved in smuggling of rice, wheat and other cereals along the 400-km-long border between Uttar Pradesh and Nepal.

Mafia of smugglers have roped in several such physically challenged persons as carriers of illegal merchandise across the border since such persons escape from being frisked at the checkpoints in Uttar Pradesh and also West Bengal.

Smuggling mafia that had traditionally traded in narcotics and arms and ammunition in the past, is now using these disabled persons to carry large quantities of sugar, cement, fertilisers and gas cylinders from India into Nepal following soaring prices of these items in the Himalayan nation.

Smuggled articles are stocked in border areas in India before being smuggled to the other side on tricycles rode, by physically challenged smugglers.

“I met with an accident few years ago. Since then I have become physically challenged. I took up this profession because I have to take care of my family. There are almost 20-25 physically challenged persons engaged in this profession. We usually carry sugar and cement with us, we never carry any forbidden products with us,” said Mohammed Ali, a physically challenged carrier.

The problem is that usually these people are looked upon with sympathy and thus jawans of SSB (Sahastra Seema Bal), the para military force meant to guard the Indo-Nepal border, are not stern against with such people.

“These physically challenged people are from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. There is a box under their tricycle and usually they carry sugar, fertilizers and gas cylinders with them to Nepal,” said S. K.Singh, Assistant Commandant, Sahastra Seema Bal.

Singh further said that these physically challenged smugglers are about 100 in number, and the number is on the increase.

These physically challenged persons are forced to take to smuggling, as they don’t have any alternate source of income. y Pawan Kumar Shah (ANI)
