Britain to give 19 million pounds to Gaza

Britain on Sunday announced it was giving 19 million pounds for refugees in Gaza and repeated calls for Israel to lift its blockade of the territory.

“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is both unacceptable and unsustainable,” International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell said announcing the funds, which will help support schools and health clinics for Gazan refugees.

The money is part of a five-year, 100-million-pound agreement signed with the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) in 2006.

Confirmation of this year’s contribution comes amid renewed concern about Israel’s blockade of Gaza following a deadly raid by Israeli commandos on an aid ship bound for the Palestinian territory earlier this week.

“There is an immediate need for unfettered access to Gaza if the humanitarian situation is to be improved, to allow the economy to get back on its feet, and to give the young people of Gaza the prospect of a better future,” Mitchell said.

“I call on the government of Israel to open the crossings to help end this humanitarian crisis.”

About 70 per cent of Gazans depend on UNRWA for healthcare, education and other basic services, British officials say.

The new strapless, thongless Sticky Sandals attach to the sole of the foot with adhesive and can be reglued and reused this summer.

The footwear can be washed with soap and water when they get soiled,

The topless sandals are somewhat of a bargain, selling for 9.99 dollars a pair on AOL Shopping website, and less if you order in bulk.

And the best part is—one size fits most, reports the New York Daily News.

The website also advises potential wearers that the adhesive sticks best when the feet are clean and dry, and that those who live in a “high moisture” environment may want to put an antiperspirant on their feet beforehand.

Just peel it off to remove. If that doesn’t work, run water on your feet, and if that fails too, reconsider rewearing them. (ANI)

Giant airship can carry 1,000 pounds of payloads up to 20,000-ft above Earth

Washington, May 6 (ANI): A 235-foot prototype Bullet Airship, called The Bullet 580, can carry 1,000 pounds of payloads up to 20,000 feet above Earth.

The inflatable airship, which has a helium-filled tanker and an inner hull filled with ambient air, can fly heavy instruments to high altitudes and remote locations, or serve as an eye-in-the-sky. It will be inflated later this month, for the first time ever.

The airship, a pioneering technological innovation in a long time, will be used as a sky based platform to relay communications and to keep watch on oil spills, forest fires or even pirates at sea.

“We”re kind of like a truck in the sky that can have different types of payloads for different requirements,” Discovery News quoted Mike Lawson as saying. Lawson is the chief executive of Alabama-based E-Green Technologies.

“The bags expand as we go up in altitude,” said Lawson. “If you hit a hard landing with any of our airships, it”s just going to kind of bounce. (ANI)

Weary Dunlop back on his feet

A bronze statue of Weary Dunlop will return to public view at the Australian War Memorial today.

The statue was removed a year ago during work to upgrade the Memorial.

Sir Ernest Edward “Weary” Dunlop was an Australian surgeon who was renowned for his leadership while being held prisoner by the Japanese during World War II.

Lola Wilkins, the head of art at the War Memorial, says the museum has taken the opportunity to spruce up the statue.

“Like all bronze sculpture, when it’s been outside for quite a while, it gets weathered, so it needs waxing,” she said.

“So our conservation people have given Weary a nice wax so he’ll be looking very beautiful when he goes back up today.”

Ms Wilkins says the sculpture will be lowered into a new and more prominent position today in readiness for the official opening of a new precinct at the Memorial.

“Weary himself was 6-foot 4 and the statue’s bigger than that, it’s bronze, and of course they have to take it out of the truck and hoist it into position,” she said.

“It’s quite a delicate operation because the feet have to be positioned exactly on the pins that come out of the plinth.”

Lohan, 23, was photographed on March 27 leaving a friend’s home in Los Angeles with mysterious clouds of dust billowing from her designer shoes.

On March 29 when Lopez, 48, jokingly claimed on his show that Lohan uses baby powder to loosen her tight high heels, the remark sparked a furious reaction from the star.

“Thanks for the childish comment regarding baby powder in my shoes to loosen up the leather,” the New York Daily News quoted her writing on her Twitter.com page.

“Don’t you have kids? U wouldn’t wanna hear that about them, or would you? Act like a grown man, have some respect and dignity for yourself,” she stated.

In response to Lohan’s furious post, Lopez asked her to visit his show.

“You want me to stop talking about you I will,” he tweeted.

“Come and tell me … To my face … I’ll stop!! Respectfully,” he added. (ANI)

Finding Mallory’s camera may reveal whether he was first to climb Mount Everest

Washington, March 13 (ANI): Reports indicate that a veteran Everest researcher is trying to find George Mallory’s camera, which may contain photographic evidence of whether he and Andrew Irvine were the first to summit Mount Everest.

According to a report in Discovery News, the lost camera that researcher Tom Holzel wants to find, is a Vestpocket Kodak that belonged to George Mallory, the climber who died just 2,030 feet below Everest’s summit in 1924.

If the camera is intact, there is a possibility its photographic film is still recoverable and could contain vital images that could settle one of the great unsolved exploration mysteries of the 20th century, namely, were Mallory and Andrew Irvine the first to summit Everest or did they die painfully close to the top?

When Mallory’s body was recovered in 1999, his camera was not among the artifacts found on his remains.

This has caused veteran Everest researcher Holzel and others to speculate that the camera was being carried by his climbing partner.

Irvine’s body has not been recovered, but Holzel is pretty certain he knows where it is.

“Two people have seen the body and it’s near where they were,” said Holzel, referring to a possible body he has spotted in survey photographs of the same part of the mountain. “I’m about 85 percent confident in this one,” he added.

If Holzel can get an expedition funded and on Everest next year, he’s hoping to find the body.

If it’s actually Irvine, they’ll need a bit more luck to find the camera.

Even then, their hard work will be only half over.

The camera has to be recovered without ruining what images might exist on the film.

Just how to do that has been studied exhaustively by Eastman Kodak experts, who have provided Holzel with a series detailed procedures to follow.

The good news is that Everest’s frozen, dry conditions are the best for preserving film.

The bad news is that depending on how the camera is protected, the images may have been degraded over the years by cosmic rays.

“At the end of the day, there’s going to have to be a lot of luck,” said Everest climber and guide Eric Simonson. “The stars are going to have to line up,” he added. (ANI)

‘Battered’ Torres vows to beat the bullies with his sharp shooters

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Europe’s No.1 striker Fernando Torres has insisted that he will beat the bullies who have subjected him to the most vicious of attention this season.

The Liverpool striker has paid a heavy price for being ranked the number one striker in Europe, and has taken as many black eyes as he has scored goals in the Premier League so far.

He said that he has come to terms with his status as the most marked man in Europe, and now wants to learn how to overcome it by scoring even more goals.

“Yes, another week, another black eye for me. The latest one I got with the national team, not in England, but football is like this. This type of thing happens,” The Mirror quoted Torres, as saying.

“I have to learn, I have to adapt and protect myself because I think I understand now the referees don’t have to protect just three or four players, they have to protect all of them. England is a physical league and we have to learn and try to be safe.

“Of course, it gets harder for me, because I am targeted, but half-way through my first season, the defenders knew me as well. I cannot use that as an excuse. I have to be ready. I have to be aware of defenders paying more attention to me, and I have to improve and try to be stronger and better,” he added.

The Spanish star admitted that in the past it has bothered him, but after a heart to heart with manager Rafa Benitez, he has decided to let his feet do the talking.

“If you get frustrated then you cannot win the game. I know for the good of the team I have to be aware and beat the defenders. That is my job,” he said. (ANI)

24 tourists stranded at 15,000 feet following landslides

Gangtok, May 28 (IANS) Two dozen tourists have been stranded for two days at a height of 15,000 feet in north Sikkim following road blocks due to landslides in the tiny Himalayan state.

The tourists, several of whom have fallen sick due to the high altitude, were returning from a trip to Gurudongmar Lake when an entire stretch of the road gave way two kilometres below Thangu at Thamchung Wednesday.

The situation has worsened due to several smaller landslides at four places along the route following heavy rains triggered by cyclone Aila which ravaged West Bengal earlier this week.

Officials said the stranded tourists have been temporarily housed in small hotels at Thangu. Three of those stranded, including a middle-aged diabetic woman reported to be sick for want of insulin, have been kept at the military base hospital in Thangu.

The officials said it might take as many as ten days to re-open the road.

Tourism secretary S.B.S. Bhaduria has asked the central agencies to allow a helicopter to fly the sick tourists to safety, but so far no official permission has been received.

Bangalore has a compressible car

Bangalore, May 23 (ANI): Mechanical Engineering students of a Bangalore college have developed a compressible car, which can be of great help to those who are faced with parking or traffic problem.

The car named LARSA (Linearly Actuated Retractable Sedan Type Automobile) has been designed by final year mechanical engineering students of the MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology.

“We decided to do something related to automotive, since all of us were interested in it. Finally, we thought of a concept car which could reduce the parking space and the traffic space as Bangalore is becoming overly populated these days,” said Sooraj, one of the car making group of students.

It’s a next generation prototype car where a four-seater car can be compressed into a two-seater with the push of a button. Its concept is so innovative that not only the car’s body, even the boot space of the car can be compressed. The 15 feet car can be compressed to 11 feet, when required.

Students developed the car for their project work. However, following its successful functioning, they wish to get their innovation patented.

Today, the innovative students are looking forward to approach a car manufacturing company.

This special car will be put on display at the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras) in December this year and also at other technological fairs. By Shweta (ANI)
