Freak training ground mishap is Capello’s biggest World Cup fear

London, May 21 (ANI): England boss Fabio Capello has admitted that his biggest fear over the next two weeks is a freak training ground accident claiming a victim of one of his key players.

According to The Mirror, the Italian coach had a scare last week when John Terry initially feared he had broken his right foot preparing for the FA Cup final, while Matthew Upson sustained a nasty-looking gash above his eye in a collision with Jermain Defoe on Wednesday.

Fortunately, neither injury was serious, but Capello is aware he is a hostage to fortune between now and the end of the tournament.

“For me, the World Cup is a really big challenge. I think England are one of the best teams in the world and we can win against anyone. My approach to the World Cup is relaxed now. I have to study the other countries we will be playing against and hope that everything we are preparing will be ready for the tournament,” Capello was quoted, as saying.

He added: “As England manager, I can do a lot of in-depth preparation. But then, we could get an injury to an important player, and everything I have prepared is for nothing! (ANI)

Lily Allen wins three Ivor Novello Awards

London, May 21 (ANI): British singer Lily Allen has bagged three Ivor Novello Awards.

Her single ‘The Fear’, No1 for four weeks in February last year, won Most Performed Song and Best Song Musically And Lyrically at the songwriters’ bash on May 20.

Allen, 25, and Greg Kurstin, with whom she penned a string of her hits including ‘The Fear’, together won Songwriters Of The Year.

“I didn’t realise I was an exceptional songwriter. I just thought I wrote nursery rhymes – little ditties that I write for myself. I am overwhelmed,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

She wants to establish herself as a hitmaker for hire and has set her sights on adding extra magic to chart-topping acts such as Lady Gaga, whose ‘Just Dance’ was knocked off No1 by ‘The Fear’.

“I’m still writing songs all the time and I won’t be writing just for myself any more. I want to write for Lady GaGa,” she added. (ANI)

Wife shot abusive Oz husband after being ‘asked to pick child to be killed’

Brisbane, May 18 (ANI): A Brisbane jury has heard that an abusive husband wrote down the names of his four children and asked his wife to pick one to be killed.

Lawyers for Susan Falls, who has been accused of murdering her husband Rodney Falls, told the Brisbane Supreme Court that the “normal mum” from Caloundra had been subjected to more than 20 years of emotional and physical abuse, reports the Brisbane Times.

Susan’s parents were planning to visit the family, which infuriated her husband to the point where he threatened to kill one of the children, the lawyers alleged.

The 42-year-old has pleaded not guilty to murdering her husband by lacing his dinner with crushed sleeping pills then firing two bullets into his head as he dozed in his favourite recliner at their home on May 25, 2006.

In opening Mrs Falls” defence case, barrister Jeff Hunter told jurors that his client has never denied shooting her husband, but he argued that she was motivated by years of fear. (ANI)

Man City’s 80-mn pounds package for Gerrard and Torres

London, May 16 (ANI): To bring two of the best players in the Premier League to Eastlands, Manchester City is ready to give Emmanuel Adebayor and Stephen Ireland as part of a 80 million pounds package for Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres.

City’s only fear is that the pair will only leave Liverpool for another team in the Champions League.

Adebayor has been unhappy at City for most of the season and Ireland has failed to make an impact after winning last season’s player of the year award.

City is determined to make their mark in the summer transfer, as Gerrard and Torres are proven performers, News of the World reports.

Chelsea is also confident of getting Torres as part of a British record transfer fee; as they cannot offer players in exchange.

City’s bid for the Liverpool duo is ambitious, but they believe they are putting forward a solution to the Kop’s financial problems, the paper reports. (ANI)

Caste councils warn couple about marrying in same community

Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh), May 13 (ANI): The Bhatti Village and Caste Council has warned a couple not to marry in the same ”gotra” in Uttar Pradesh”s Greater Noida city.

The Bhattis are one of the largest Rajput warrior clans in India.

The councils” members said that Jaivendra Baisla and his bride-to-be, Manisha Bhatti, belong to the same ”gotra”, and that they both are descended from a common ancestor.

However, the families of both have refuted the claim.

Jaivendra Baisla is due to marry Bhatti, who hails from Bisnoli village, on May 15.

He said his family was busy in the preparations, when the judgement of the village council was forced on them.

“My marriage was to be on 15th of May. We were busy with the preparations but some people from Chittairah village (Baisla”s village) have banned this marriage. They have warned us that if this marriage takes place then they will forcibly stop it,” said Baisla.

“They have threatened that anything thing can happen if this marriage takes place,” he added.

The caste council from Chittairah village, where Baisla lives, ruled against the marriage and even threatened to kill the groom, if he goes ahead with the marriage.

Meanwhile, the bride-to-be, Manisha Bhatti, expressed her fear of the village council”s death threat.

“A village panchayat (council) of Chittairah has objected. I just want my marriage to take place on the date it was supposed to. They have threatened to shoot my husband-to-be and I request that nothing of this sort should happen,” said Bhatti.

The council has threatened not to let Manisha Bhatti enter the village.

“We are stopping this marriage because we are from Bhatti ”gotra”, and all the girls from this ”gotra” are our sisters.

Shouldn”t we send our girls outside the ”gotra” or should we get them married within the same ”gotra”?” said Rajvir Bhatti, head of Chittairah village council.

“All the people from Bhatti ”gotra” are brothers and sisters and cannot marry each other,” he added.

Earlier on March 30, a sessions court in Karnal had awarded death punishment to five persons on the charges of killing a young couple – Manoj and Babli, who had married in 2007 against the community”s wishes. (ANI)

Australian T20 team has best depth: Mark Waugh

Melbourne, May 13 (ANI): After struggling to come to grips with the short format since it became an international fixture in 2005, Australia are now one win from advancing to their first World Twenty20 final

Former Opener Mark Waugh believes the selectors have sent a squad to this year”s tournament with the “best depth of any team going around.”

“They have nine blokes that can hit the ball over the fence and three guys that can bowl the ball 150kmh,” Waugh told foxsports.com.au.

“Even if they lose a couple of early wickets, they”ve still got the depth to keep going hard, where as a lot of other teams really only have two or three batsmen they can rely on,” he said.

Australia has demolished opposition bowling attacks on their way to five straight victories and bowling trio of Dirk Nannes, Mitchell Johnson and Shaun Tait have struck fear in the hearts of opponents.

“It doesn”t matter what form of the game – if you”ve got fast bowlers, batsmen don”t like it. And we”ve got three guys that bowl 150kmh – I haven”t seen any team collar our fast bowlers. They are all coming in from different angles with unorthodox bowling styles.

“Dirk Nannes is a hard bowler to pick up – his action”s a bit ungainly – and Shaun Tait has a very different action as well,” Fox Sports quoted Waugh, as saying.

If they can defeat Pakistan again, Australia will have achieved their best result at the tournament and made amends for their exit at the group stages in England last year.(ANI)

Black Cap batters have to throw caution to the winds: Styris.

St.Lucia (West Indies), May 10 (ANI): New Zealand all-rounder Scot Styris has said that the Black Caps will need to throw caution to the winds and “seize the game against England by the scruff of the neck” in order to attain Twenty20 World Cup glory.

“We seemed to play with a little bit of fear yesterday, and by that I mean, guys were a little scared of taking risks, of playing the big shots and I think you”ve got to in this version of the game, especially in big games,” The Sun quoted Styris, as saying.

“You”ve got to be prepared to get out and I felt like, as a group, we didn”t do that,” he added.

New Zealand will be grateful that England star batsman Kevin Pietersen won’t be around, as he has left for England to attend the birth of his first child.

Styris said Pietersen, who has scored of 6, 70 not out and 53 in the Caribbean tournament so far, had been one of the competition”s form players.

“He”s world class and without him we know that it makes our job easier, although we know that we still have to put the ball in the right areas,” Styris said. (ANI)

Hamilton undaunted by Button challenge

London, May 7 (ANI): Lewis Hamilton is unfazed by the threat posed by in-form Jenson Button, who is leading Formula One’s Battle of Britain.

Button has won two of this season’s four races while McLaren team-mate Hamilton is yet to register a win.

Button leads the world championship table, and Hamilton is back in joint-third place with archrival Fernando Alonso.

Asked whether he fancied his chances at supplanting Button, an unperturbed Hamilton told The Sun, “Yeah, I”m not sweating, it”s all good. It”s a long season and we”ve only had four races, so there”s a long, long way to go.”

Hamilton, who has pulled off 32 overtaking manoeuvres this season against Button”s seven, added, “I don”t fear anyone or any other team. I have not even looked at what points I have or what points I don”t have. We”ll see what happens in the future.”

Meanwhile, Hamilton insists that their rivalry is limited to the racetrack alone, and that their performances are propelling McLaren to greater victories, “We”re coping really well and doing productive work at the team. I”m in the best team with the best team-mate,” said Hamilton.

On the subject of racing with Formula-One giant Michael Schumacher Hamilton said it was a privilege to go wheel-to-wheel with him.

Schumacher’s comeback from retirement has been disappointing with Hamilton easily out-doing him on the circuit. (ANI)

Lara Bingle ‘not welcome’ at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week

Bingle, 22, who has just been recruited by Harpers Bazaar, was not welcomed by some of the leading RAFW designers.

The model has reportedly been denied access backstage, with some designers concerned by her “brand association”.

The sometime swimwear model, fashioned in the image of Bazaar fashion editor Christina Centenera, may wear the clothes well, say insiders, but her style does not appear her own.

According to a prison official, he will get a review within the next 28 days, and can request a transfer, but might not be eligible for 18 months. (ANI)

Time travel possible, says Stephen Hawking

Melbourne, May 03 (ANI): Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking thinks that time travel is possible.

In the past he has steered clear of the topic in public lest he be considered a crank but Hawking told the Daily Mail that now he is less worried about that possibility.

Preparing for the debut of his Discovery documentary, Stephen Hawking”s Universe, which screens next week, Hawking said he believed humans could travel millions of years into the future and repopulate their devastated planet.

“Time travel was once considered scientific heresy, and I used to avoid talking about it for fear of being labelled a crank,” News.com.au. quoted him as saying in the docu.

“These days I”m not so cautious,” he added.

Manchester University professor Brian Cox told The Times that Hawking”s theory had already found some basis in experiments carried out by the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva.

Hawking also says we can only travel forward in time.

Moving backwards is impossible, Hawking says, because it “violates a fundamental rule that cause comes before effect”. (ANI)

Here”s why Annie Lenox wore “HIV Positive” tee

London, April 29 (ANI): Annie Lennox says she sported a t-shirt emblazoned with the words ”HIV Positive” on American Idol to express solidarity with the people infected with the deadly virus.

The Eurythmics star, 55, triggered speculations about her heath after she wore the tee on the talent hunt show last week.

However, she has now explained her decision for selecting the outfit.

“The fact that I wore the t-shirt made thousands of people speculate whether I was was HIV positive or not. So many people responded, that it was the number one most discussed topic on Yahoo and MySpace. It”s such a simple thing, to wear a t-shirt with a message like that… yet it is highly controversial, and it forces people to confront an issue that is usually ignored, or kept at a distance,” the Daily Star quoted her, as writing on her blog.

Lennox added: “The t-shirt is a bold statement of solidarity with those of us who are HIV positive. It risks social chastisement, because it is accompanied by a load of fear and taboo. We want HIV to go away… but it”s currently the biggest killer of women of reproductive age around the globe. As a woman and a mother I intend to keep sending out the message.” (ANI)

England ‘least patriotic’ country in Europe: Survey

London, Apr 20(ANI): A new survey has found that England is the least patriotic country in Europe.

According to This England magazine’s study, respondents were questioned on several aspects of national pride, with English people judging their overall level of patriotism to be 5.8 out of ten on average.

It also revealed that just one in three British people were aware that the celebration of St. George was this Friday, while forty percent did not know why he is the patron saint.

Twenty percent blamed a broken society for their lack of patriotism, while half said they had been patriotic in the past.

“We’re incredibly disappointed that English people are afraid of displaying the St. George’s Cross on our patron saint’s day,” The Sun quoted Stephen Garnett, editor of This England magazine, as saying.

“It was quite shocking to see some of the results, particularly the amount of people that don’t fly the flag because of fear of being judged. It just shows what political correctness has done to the English people over the years,” he added.

The survey, which questioned 5,820 adults in nine European countries including Scotland, Wales and The Republic of Ireland, found that The Netherlands was the most patriotic European country.

The Dutch people ranked their patriotism at 7.18 out of ten, followed by Scottish at 7.1, the Welsh at 7.06 and the Irish at 6.72. (ANI)

Captain Strauss also has his sights on Ashes glory in Australia, but has warned his England stars that the hard work starts now. (ANI)

Routine lifting doesn’t really harm your back

Washington, Apr 16 (ANI): Frequent lifting does more good than harm for one’s back, according to a researcher in the University of Alberta”s Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine.

Tapio Videman said disc degeneration is the main suspected origin of severe back symptoms and the main target in spine surgery.

But he challenged the common perception that disc degeneration is caused by physical loading, the pressure put on the spine that comes with, for example, frequent lifting.

Videman”s research team found that more physical loading might in fact slightly delay disc degeneration as it”s known to be good for the bones, muscles and tendons.

They studied identical male twins where one of the siblings was, on average, 29 pounds heavier than the other.

He said that the most prevalent source of physical loading is what each individual is carrying around on a daily basis— his or her own body weight.

The study found that there was no evidence that the loading in the form of extra body weight was harmful to the person”s spinal discs.

In fact, the heavier twin had slightly less disc degeneration compared to the lighter twin.

Videman concluded that routine physical loading is not bad for a disc, within limits.

He said that the findings have immediate implications for preventative strategies and patient education.

In his opinion, people who are unsure about physical-loading activities while at work, home or at the gym because of fear of harming their back, should challenge their spines by gradually increasing daily physical loading. (ANI)
