Michael Douglas feels dwarfed in front of techno-savvy dad

Washington, Apr 30 (ANI): Hollywood star Michael Douglas is embarrassed how ignorant he is when it comes to technology, while his 92-year-old father Kirk has a blog to his credit.

Douglas has said that he is proud of the Spartacus star’s status as “the oldest blogger on MySpace.”

However, the 64-year-old actor has admitted that doesn’t even know how to use email.

“He (Kirk) prides himself on his spot on MySpace; he’s 92 years old and he’s got a blog on MySpace. He’s got 4,000 followers. I wouldn’t even know how (to read his blog),” Contactmusic quoted him as saying.

He added: “About three years ago I had an email address, the email would go to my office and my secretary would fax me the email!” (ANI)

Research and Markets: Fast Track: Gas Plasma Treatments for Water Repellent Technology

DUBLIN–(Business Wire)–
Research and Markets
(http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/b2f944/fast_track_gas_pl) has
announced the addition of Textiles Intelligence’s new report “Fast Track: Gas
Plasma Treatments for Water Repellent Technology” to their offering.

Gas plasma technology can be used to change the surface properties of certain
types of materials, including ceramics, fabrics, leather, metals, paper and
polymers.

The technology involves the exposure of the material to a plasma at low
pressure, usually in a purpose built chamber. A plasma is a partially ionised
gas in which a certain proportion of negatively charged electrons are able to
flow freely rather than being bound to an atom or molecule. This makes the
plasma electrically conductive and highly responsive to electromagnetic fields.

Recently, gas plasma technology has been successfully applied to performance
footwear as an alternative to water repellent coatings.

The technology offers a number of benefits compared with traditional chemical
treatments. In particular, the treatment is said to be more thorough as it
covers the surface of every fibre and the voids in between the fibres.

Harry Potter sketches up for grabs

London, Apr 19 (ANI): Rare artwork for Harry Potter books is to be auctioned at the Glasgow Art Fair.

Sketches by the acclaimed artist Cliff Wright, who illustrated the book Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, are to go under the hammer later this month.

The drawings are the instantly recognisable forerunners of the images, which appeared on the front and back covers of the second novel of JK Rowling’s series.

The front illustration, which features the bespectacled wizard and his classmate Hermione Granger clinging to the back of hippogriff, is expected to fetch 13,000 pounds.

The second sketch, which features a snarling dog, is predicted to raise 11,000 pounds.

Wright said the images were completed in 1998.

“The images are part of a series of 10 which were sent to the publisher Bloomsbury as rough ideas for character development and composition,” he said.

“Each drawing was submitted by fax and returned with comments. The designs were also passed on to JK Rowling for her approval and any comments passed back to me,” the Scotsman quoted Wright as saying.

“On deciding the look of the characters and the picture composition, the watercolour illustration that you see on the cover was then completed, and when the book was published in the autumn of 1999 it became a global phenomenon,” he added.

Micky Middleton of art firm Red Gallery is dealing with the sale and believes that it would attract a huge amount of interest.

“I would encourage collectors to come and see these original works in situ at the Fair,” he said.

The Glasgow Art Fair will run from April 23-26. (ANI)

Winehouse won’t give Fielder-Civil a penny in divorce

London, Feb 7 (ANI): Fed with hubby Blake Fielder Civil publicly humiliating her, singer Amy Winehouse has reportedly contacted her lawyers, telling them that she doesn’t owe him anything.

Apparently, the ‘Back to Black’ hitmaker is determined that Blake won’t see a penny of her estimated 10-million pound fortune and is building up a cast-iron case to prove her point, reports the Mirror.

A source revealed: “What with the moral grounds for complaint – his public bad-mouthing of her – Amy decided to reduce her initial offer of ’100,000 pounds take-it-or-leave-it’, to zero.

“She’s adamant he’s been living off her coat-tails for too long and does not deserve a penny more.”

The insider added: “This is set to become the most acrimonious celebrity split of 2009. The knives are out.

“Blake has been bad-mouthing her and Amy feels totally betrayed. She supported him the entire time he was banged up first time around, and this is the thanks she gets.

“When he was released from jail and packed off to rehab, he didn’t even inform her. The first she heard of it was when the clinic invoiced her for 36,000pounds – she still has the fax to prove it.

“On top of this, Amy spent in excess of half a million pounds on Blake’s legal team in the past year, as well as on presents and surprises for him.”

The couple’s imminent divorce comes just 18 months after their fun wedding in Miami. (ANI)

Try a lighthouse for that unusual weekend break

Cork, Ireland – Anyone keen on a mystical getaway should book now for what could turn out to be a genuinely spooky break in Wicklow Head lighthouse on Ireland’s east coast, about an hour’s drive south of Dublin.

The octagonal, stone tower is one of 15 properties across Ireland, restored by the Irish Landmark Trust, which are available to the public as self-catering holiday accommodation.

Guests should however expect a wait of about one year owing to the popularity of the offbeat vacation venue.

Read a couple of ghost stories and settle down for a cold, wintry night in one of six beautifully-restored, octagonal rooms while the wind howls outside. The accommodation, complete with four-poster beds, is arranged vertically, adding to the exclusivity. But, when in the grip of a spooky tale, think twice about that midnight snack. Climbing all 106 steps to the kitchen was a bit dampening.

The octagonal tower was originally one of a pair built in 1781 as a landmark to end confusion among mariners who wondered whether they were further north on the east coast at Howth or Hook Head. However, its hilltop location and the fact that it was originally lit by lanterns containing tallow candles confused mariners in dense fog. Lightning struck the tower in October 1836, gutting it entirely.

Eventually, a third, new lighthouse was built lower down on Dunbur Head and is the one now guiding mariners. Lighthouse keeper, Brendan Conway and his wife Miriam raised their family there.

“I only have good memories of it. It was a beautiful, unique place to live and we had carloads of visitors every Sunday as a result,” Miriam said.

Ireland’s lighthouses have been automated since May 1994, the year in which Brendan retired. He was later asked back to perform regular maintenance duties which he still carries out.

The Irish Landmark Trust acquired the abandoned tower in 1996 and set about restoring it.

“I never thought we would be renting out the old lighthouse,” said Miriam but in the course of doing so the couple has made friends with guests from Germany, Canada and other countries.

The lighthouse is by no means draughty since the arched windows are set in walls one metre thick, allowing visitors to enjoy the Irish Sea and the surrounding landscape in safety and warmth and spot the regular beams of light from the other tower. Hues of blue and white give it a slightly Mediterranean feel.

The tower is located in Wicklow county, which is renowned as “The Garden of Ireland”, so guests can combine culture and heritage and enjoy the magnificent coastline and mountains. Other nearby attractions include the scenic vale of Avoca, the historic Powerscourt House and Gardens and Glendalough.
