National Conference denies tiff with Congress over ministerial berths

New Delhi, May 22 (ANI): Denying any tiff with the Congress, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said his party was not looking for any ministerial berth in the new government.

The unscheduled departure of National Conference (NC) patron Farooq Abdullah to South Africa today, when the new government will be sworn-in, gave rise to speculation over tiff between the NC leader and the Congress.

However Omar scotched such speculation. He said that his party had given unconditional support to the Congress and though his father had expressed a desire to assume a role in the new government, he had never insisted, and that the decision lies solely with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

“Neither Farooq Abdullah nor anybody in the National Conference is angry or miffed. He has always said that he was ready to assume a role in the new government but, the decision would lie solely with Prime Minister or UPA chairperson. We have not put in any demand from our side,” said Omar.

He further said that the main focus of his party and the government lays in working for the development and betterment of Jammu and Kashmir and that of its people and not on securing for himself ministerial posts in new government.

“The ties we have forged are for the betterment and development of Jammu and Kashmir Kashmir has lot of problems of its own and whether a National Conference candidate becomes a minister in New Delhi or not will not have any affect on the people o. They will be affected if we are not able to give a good government to the people. Manmohan Singh had promised us that he will work for Kashmir and we are now waiting for him to assume office so that we can fulfil the promises that we made to the people,” he added. (ANI)

Kapil Sibal’s name is doing the rounds as the new Foreign Minister. Rahul Gandhi has stated that he would like to remain outside the Government but speculation is rife that he may agree to join the Cabinet. (ANI)

Violent protests rock Kashmir

Srinagar, May 16 (ANI): At least nine persons were injured here after police fired teargas shells to disperse stone-pelting protesters demanding release of jailed leaders during the Parliament elections.

Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman of hardline faction of separatist All Parties Hurriyat (freedom) Conference (APHC) has been calling for protests.

“We are protesting against the detention of our political prisoners. Geelani has pressurised the Indian Government to release our separatist leaders,” said Mohammad Shafi, general secretary of the Democratic Political Movement.

The protesters pelted stones on the police and paramilitary forces who baton-charged and lobbed teargas shells to bring the situation under control.

Geelani remained under house arrest even as other separatist leaders were released from their confinement on Thursday.

APHC chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front chief Muhammad Yaseen Malik, and others have also been released from house arrest.

The release of the leaders came after elections ended Wednesday. They were put under house arrest to prevent them from running poll boycott campaign. (ANI)

Separatists continue poll boycott efforts in Kashmir

Srinagar, May 9 (ANI): Separatist leader and Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference or APHC, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq have again urged voters to boycott the fifthnd last phase of general elections.

Addressing a large gathering at the Jama Masjid on Friday, he urged the people of north Kashmir, who will be casting their votes on May 13, in the last and final phase, to stay away from the polling process.

“We expect that during last phase of polls, our brothers in north Kashmir regions of Sopore and Baramula will boycott the polls,” Farooq said.

Earlier three phases of polling in Kashmir witnessed a low turnout compared to high polling during last year’s assembly elections.

The boycott call is seen as a bid by the separatists to deny New Delhi any credit for holding an election in Kashmir.

Hurriyat’s decision came after United Jihad Council (UJC), a Pakistan-based amalgam of 13-militant groups fighting Indian troops in Kashmir, asked it to support their boycott call. (ANI)

Former Punjab IG admits he was “unaware” of security plans made for Sri Lankan team

Lahore, May 2 (ANI): The former inspector general of police (IGP) of Punjab province, Khawaja Khalid Farooq, has told an inquiry tribunal of the Lahore High Court (LHC) investigating the charges of dereliction of duty on part of the security officers during the attack on the Sri Lankan team, that he was unaware of the security plan made for the safety of the visiting team.

Farooq told the committee that he was unaware about the decisions which were taken by the home secretary in a meeting on January 16, as he was not appointed to the post until then and had took charge of the office on February 26.

He also admitted that he came to know about the comprehensive security plan only after the brazen attack had taken place on March 3, the Daily Times reports.

However, Farooq said that realizing the threat to the visiting team, he himself had issued directions to his subordinate officials to take appropriate measures for the safety and security of the players’.

The tribunal, consisting of Justice Shabbar Raza Rizvi, refused to buy Farooq’s claims saying it was incorrect and contradictory to his written and signed reply. (ANI)

Separatists faction continue shutdown in Kashmir

Srinagar, Apr 30 (ANI): Separatists led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the Chairman of the hardline faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), have called upon people to boycott elections in Kashmir on Thursday.

The separatists have called for a 50-hour shutdown in the valley, against the polls.

The schools, offices, shops and other establishments wore a deserted look in Srinagar. Gun toting policemen patrolled the streets as they kept a strict vigil in the region.

The residents complained against the shutdown call.

“The Hurriyat Conference has given a call for shutdown to oppose the election being held today. Since yesterday, there is a curfew like situation in the city. Infact it feels as if it is curfew. We cannot go to work, all schools, shops and business establishments are shut. There is no transport on streets,” said Farooq Ahmad, a resident..

This is not the first time the separatists have given a call for poll boycott in Kashmir.

The separatists had to suffer a major setback after residents defied the boycott call given by the Hurriyat during the State Assembly polls held in November 2008 and came out in large numbers to cast their votes.

A prominent Kashmiri separatist leader Sajjad Lone, who had given a call for poll boycott during the state elections, has decided to contest during these general elections and raise the voices of Kashmiris in the Parliament.

Besides the Congress party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the National Conference (NC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are also contesting in the elections. (ANI)

Geelani calls for 50-hour shutdown as an anti-polls protest

Srinagar, Apr 29 (ANI): Syed Ali Shah Geelani-led All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), the hardline faction of separatists in Kashmir, gave a call for a 50-hour shutdown to protest against the polls to the Lok Sabha in the valley.

Geelani had already called for a boycott of these elections being held during April-May.

Heavy security deployment dotted roads on Srinagar with shops remaining closed and low turnout people seen in the open.

“They have called for a 50 hours shutdown, that is on 29 and 30. Curfew is there right from the morning. Police is there everywhere and nobody is allowed to move around,” said Ghulam Hassan, a resident.

The shutdown has affected the normal life.

“This shutdown call has been given by Geelani to protest against the polls in the state. The residents who have to travel a lot to distance places are suffering a lot,” said Shabir Ahmad, another resident.

The moderate factions of the Hurriyat Conference, led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq had decided not to support the boycott.

The pressure from the United Jehad Council based in Pakistan made the moderate faction to participate in the shutdown call.

Besides the Congress party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the National Conference (NC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are also contesting in the elections. (ANI)

Media warned against ‘anti-Taliban coverage’ in Swat

Peshawar, Apr.29 (ANI): The Swat chapter of the Taliban has warned the media not to promote ‘anti-Taliban coverage’.

Pamphlets warning media houses were found scattered at the office premises of several TV channels and newspapers reporting on developments in the region.

“All editors of wire services, private and government-run news agencies and journalists and columnists are informed that the way you present news and report events give us an impression that you are pursuing a pro-West policy under greed or pressure saying that the Taliban are sabotaging the peace and enforcement of Islamic system,” the pamphlets stated.

“The media helps the west focus on us. Stop doing this and if you did not desist from doing this we will take you to Islamic courts and you will be responsible for this conspiracy and will be responsible for terrible consequences,” the Urdu pamphlets warned.

Editors of local dailies and news channels have taken the warning seriously and are planning to suspend their operations in the region

“We will have no other option, but to close down newspapers and leave the district,” the editor of a local daily, Shumal, Ghulam Farooq told The Daily Times.

“We will boycott the elections till Kashmir issue is resolved,” Farooq added.

On April 16, the Hurriyat conference had said that it would not use the word boycott in the ongoing parliamentary polls in the state.

Pak Punjab falling under Taliban’s grip: MQM

Islamabad, Apr 22 (ANI): Pakistan’s Punjab province is falling under the grip of the Taliban and the country needs to act quickly to eliminate this grave threat to the heart of our country, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Deputy Parliamentary leader Dr Farooq Sattar has said.

Talking to reporters at Parliament House, Sattar claimed the Taliban were getting stronger in Punjab and the time had come to take immediate action against the people who posed a grave threat to Pakistan’s security.

He said the Taliban were getting out of control and they had proved it by denouncing the constitution, judiciary and parliament as un-Islamic.

Replying to a question, Sattar said MQM chief Altaf Hussain would not return to Pakistan anytime soon because he was receiving threats to his life. (ANI)

Swat Sharia laws rock Pakistan’s Senate

Islamabad, April 20 (IANS) The Sharia laws imposed in Swat Valley and other parts of Pakistan’s restive northwest Monday rocked the Senate, the upper house of parliament, with the Muttahidda Quami Movement (MQM) and other opposition parties walking out in protest against the remarks of a Taliban-linked radical cleric on the country’s judicial system.

Prior to this, a heated exchange of words and sloganeering against the promulgation of the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation rocked the Senate as Parliamentary Affairs Minister Babar Awan tabled it in the house, Geo TV said.

The move was a mere formality as the regulation has already come into force with the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament April 13 passing it by a majority vote after an MQM walkout and President Asif Ali Zardari quickly ratifying it the same night.

The opposition members were incensed over the remarks Sunday of Maulana Sufi Mohammad of the Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi (TNSM) that Pakistan’s existing judicial system was un-Islamic and his vowing to impose Sharia across the country.

In the midst of the pandemonium, Senate Chairman Farooq H. Naek reserved his ruling on the regulation.

The situation in the Senate was far different than in the National Assembly, where only the MQM had raised the voice of dissent as other opposition parties quietly acquiesced to the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation.

In fact, Ports and Shipping Minister Babar Khan Ghauri went to the extent of requesting the house chairman to pass a ruling over Sufi Mohammad’s statement terming parliament ‘unlawful’ under Shariah.

Ghauri accused the cleric of violating the sanctity of the judiciary and parliament.

Leader of Opposition Waseem Sajjad saw little purpose behind the Nizam-e-Adl Regulation being tabled in the upper house.

The Pakistani government said Monday it was examining Sufi Mohammad’s remarks and had sought a recording of his speech.

At his rally Sunday at Mingora city in Swat, Sufi Mohammed termed judges, lawyers and pro-democracy clerics of Pakistan as ‘rebels’.

‘Opposition to enforcement of (the law as per) the holy Quran is infidelity,’ the Nation newspaper quoted the radical cleric as saying.

Pakistan’s judicial system, he said, was un-Islamic and the judgments of Sharia courts could not be challenged in these courts.

‘High courts and the Supreme Court were ‘ghair sharaiee’ (un-Islamic) institutions and going for appeal in ‘ghair sharaiee’ institutions was ‘haram’ (prohibited as per Islamic code),’ he added.

Sufi Mohammed’s TNSM and the NWFP government Feb 16 inked a controversial peace deal under which Sharia laws would be imposed in Swat and six other districts of Malakand in return for the Taliban laying down their arms.

Thousands had gathered to attend Sufi Muhammad’s rally.

He also criticized the country’s rulers, saying ‘they were appeasing the West by thrusting the Nizam of Kufr (rule of infidelity)’.

He said that he wanted peace and affection among the Muslims and ‘wish to set up an environment of brotherhood.’

‘But the Muslims were divided in different parties, we direly need unity at this time,’ he maintained.
