Team Anna should have faith in parliament: Digvijay

Kolkata, Oct 30 (IANS) Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said Sunday Team Anna should have faith in the Indian constitution as the Lokpal bill was being deliberated on by a parliamentary standing committee.

He was reac

ting to Team Anna member Arvind Kejriwal threatening to launch a campaign against the Congress unless the Lokpal bill is passed in the parliament’s winter session beginning mid-November.

“Arvind Kejriwal should believe in the Indian constitution and democratic system of the country as standing committee of parliament is discussing the proposed Lokpal bill,” said Singh on the sidelines of a programme in Kolkata.

Kejriwal had Saturday accused the government of launching a smear campaign against its members and trying to create a rift and warned that Team Anna would launch a campaign against the ruling Congress unless the bill for an ombudsman was passed.

“He should know that a standing committee of parliament is discussing the bill. Whatever they (Team Anna) say is not correct. They should respect parliament,” said Singh.

US forced American Muslim into ‘exile’: Rights group

A Muslim civil rights group today accused the US government of forcing an American citizen into “exile” because he was an Islamic convert.

The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said Raymond Earl Knaeble IV, 29, had been placed on a no-fly list and had been unable to return home from Colombia since March.

The group’s claim could not be independently confirmed and the Department of Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to CAIR, Knaeble this week flew to Mexico in hope of travelling to the Mexican-US border, but he instead faced lengthy interrogation by Mexican officials before being sent back to Colombia.

“He was stopped by Mexican authorities as he got off the plane and asked, ‘Are you Muslim?’ He was then detained for 15 hours and asked many questions relating to his faith,” according to CAIR.

“It is un-American and illegal for a citizen who has not been accused of, let alone charged with, any crime to be denied entry to his own country without adequate explanation,” said CAIR lawyer Nadhira Al-Khalili, who is representing Knaeble.

“We call on the Department of Justice to end Mr Knaeble’s forced exile and to address the disturbing issue of the other Americans who are similarly being denied re-entry to their own country,” she said.

Collingwood confident of team abilities, doesn’t require a Churchillian speech

London, May 13 (ANI): Ahead of today’s T20 World Cup semi-final against Sri Lanka, England skipper Paul Collingwood is so confident about his team that he says it will not require a Churchillian speech to rally them ahead of the crucial game.

Collingwood has so much faith in ‘the most powerful England team’ he has ever seen that a grand speech would be of no use for him.

Commenting on his team business in the Caribbean and playing in a fearless style, Collingwood joked: “Just call me brave.”

“I don’t need a speech to be honest. The guys are ready and they are excited to have a crack at reaching a world final. If there was a feeling around the camp that the guys are nervous or anything like that, then maybe something would have to be said,” The Mirror quoted him, as saying.

“But the guys are so focused in the jobs they’ve got to do and the roles they’ve got to play. We’ll have a team meeting before the game, but let me tell you I’m not going to come out with any rip-roaring speech,” Collingwood said.

“The guys are just so confident in the jobs they’re doing. We look at areas we can improve, and you can be a little bit pernickety, but we’re certain that if we put similar performances in we’re going to win,” The Mirror quoted him, as saying.

“There are no nerves in the camp and it is certainly the most powerful England side that I’ve played in. When you look down the team sheet at the ability to hit sixes, it gives you confidence,” Collingwood said.

Britain”s youngest voter explains why he broke the law

London, May 10 (ANI): A teen, who voted in the UK General Election 2010 despite being underage by four years, has opened up about his experience.

According to Alfie McKenzie, 14, from Lancashire, he decided to vote against the Conservatives in his area after receiving a polling card in error.

“I dressed as much like a Tory as I could manage: a trench coat, reading glasses, sharp shoes,” Sky News quoted McKenzie, as writing in the Observer.

He went on: “I gave it my slightly eccentric aristocrat”s walk and my best self-righteous Conservative accent, walked into St Hilda”s polling station, went straight to the table and was directed to the slip which I was to cross.”

The schoolgoer said his secret came to light only after he told a teacher at school who reported him to the cops and the local council.

McKenzie said: “When the police arrived, I came across way too informed and understanding to claim ignorance; the burly officer”s patronising tone lowered as our interview progressed.

“Fortunately, it seems that I”m not going to be prosecuted.”

He added: “It seems I have become the first 14-year-old to vote in a General Election and, if we”re to keep some faith in our voting system and the competence of its managers, hopefully the last.” (ANI)

Man City reposes faith in Mancini

London, May 7 (ANI): Manchester City’s Abu Dhabi based owner Sheikh Mansour will give coach Roberto Mancini the cash to launch another major bid to regain a place in the top four of the English Premier League.

Mancini’s position at City immediately came under scrutiny after the club’s Champions League dream ended on Wednesday night, but chairman Khaldoon al Mubarak quickly endorsed him.

Sheikh Mansour has already spent over 220 million pounds on players. And Khaldoon said: “We have to move on and give Roberto all the tools he needs in order to be well prepared for next season.”

“There should be no speculation. Roberto is our manager and has done an excellent job after coming here in mid-season,” The Sun quoted Khaldoon, as saying.

“I’m very happy with Roberto and Sheikh Mansour is delighted with the way he has organised the team. I believe Roberto is going to do a wonderful job for many years.

“That’s why we brought him to the club. I have the highest respect for Roberto as a manager and person. He is driven, committed and has a winning mentality. He wants to achieve things for the club,” he said.

“He has the interests of the club at heart and he is definitely the right manager for this club for many years. I think that what he needs this summer is time to prepare,” Khaldoon said.

Mancini was set a target of 70 points for the season after replacing Mark Hughes in December, but 1-0 loss to Spurs means City will reach 69 if they win their final game at West Ham on Sunday. (ANI)

‘I’ll always be Sania Mirza’

Newly wed tennis star Sania Mirza has said she will retain her maiden name and play for another three to four years.

In an interview to ‘People’ magazine along with husband and former Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik, Sania said, “no matter what happens I am always going to be Sania Mirza. Maybe later I’ll add his name (sic).”

She said they have chosen Palm Jumeirah in Dubai as their new residence.

“My husband wants to live in Palm Jumeirah and I am not fussy, so that’s where we live,” says Sania.

The couple said their courtship developed over telephone after the first few meetings.

“Suddenly we were constantly texting and then we started talking on the phone for hours. So that’s where things started for us,” says Sania.

Sania said her mother would keep saying that she was wasting so much money on phone calls. “I would tell her that it’s not a waste,” the 23-year-old tennis star said.

On the controversy surrounding their marriage, the two of them said it brought them closer together.

“Hats off to my parents who supported Shoaib like they have stood by me even before he became a part of the family. That got us all much closer,” said Sania.

Shoaib says he also had full faith in Sania’s love. “Sania always knew the truth so I was very confident. We were together and surrounded by people who loved and supported us.”

When asked about their busy schedules, Shoaib said, “We are going to be together for a lifetime so it won’t be very difficult to stay away from each other for a few weeks or months.”

“Anyway, it’s temporary. I’ll probably play for another three to four years,” Sania added.

Sania said Shoaib was more romantic than her. “He is more romantic. When I was getting the mehndi done, he sat with me for four hours because he wanted to.”

On their marriage, she said, “Five years from now when we go on a drive, I want us to be excited at the thought of being together and holding hands.”

Shoaib said Sania was very adjusting, extremely sweet and very punctual. More importantly, she doesn’t get angry, he said.

Sania felt Shoaib was an easy person to live with. “We have spent the last seven days together and we haven’t felt like we are in each other’s face. It’s been very easy to live with him,” she said of her week-old marriage.

The pair is expecting a warm welcome in Pakistan. Shoaib says, “I’ve heard that people of Pakistan are very excited and people are saying that there will be dhols to welcome Sania.”

Both of them are now looking ahead to their honeymoon – she likes the Maldives, he prefers Europe – after which they will settle down in Dubai.

AC Milan planning 20 million pound bid for Berbatov

London, Apr 20 (ANI): Bulagarian striker Dimitar Berbatov could end his Manchester United spell this summer, with AC Milan planning a 20 million pound bid for him.

Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson has lost faith in the Bulgarian player and is ready to offload him.

Ferguson accepts he must take a loss on Berbatov, 29, who cost 30.75 million pounds but has scored just 12 goals this season, and will be tempted if Milan moves in, The Sun reports.

An AC Milan insider said: “No contact has been made yet but we admire Berbatov.”

“He is a strong player who would do very well in Italy. Whether something can be arranged remains to be seen. It has been difficult for Berbatov in Manchester but he is a good player who has a lot to offer,” the source added. (ANI)

Riewoldt to miss at least 12 weeks

St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt has confirmed he is likely to be out of action for a minimum of 12 weeks with his hamstring tendon injury.

The Saints had been careful not to put a timeframe on the recovery period for their most important player, only expressing confidence he would return in the latter part of the season.

St Kilda and Riewoldt are more than hopeful he will be ready for the finals.

Riewoldt needed surgery on Monday to repair a hamstring tendon after he tore it just before half-time in last Friday night’s 28-point win over Collingwood at Docklands.

“Probably 12 (weeks) is something like the minimum for this sort of injury, but again they haven’t had too much experience with this particular type of injury,” Riewoldt told Channel Seven.

“It’s not a tendon off the bone, as some people were reporting, or a tendon off a muscle junction, it’s a pure tendon injury.”

His absence will mean a massive challenge for the Saints, but Riewoldt has faith they will be able to reorganise their attack and remain competitive.

The Saints narrowly lost an epic grand final to Geelong last year and have started this season with three straight wins.

Before his successful operation, there was plenty of speculation about how long Riewoldt would be sidelined, including fears that the injury might end his season.

Riewoldt admits he was nervous before receiving the good news that the surgery had gone well.

“It’s pretty nerve wracking, to be honest, when I did it originally,” he said.

“I haven’t had much experience with hamstring (injuries) … so I didn’t know what to expect.

“There were a lot of doomsdayers, I suppose, who were saying ‘off the bone’, and then some were saying regulation four to six (weeks).

“So I just threw my arms up in the air and really was willing to accept whatever happened, providing I could get back later in the year, which is the case.”

Investor keeps faith in perpetual-motion machine

A Northern Rivers man who invested in a company which claims to have developed a perpetual-motion machine says it should be allowed to continue its work.

Cycclone Magnetic Engines are said to produce power using magnets rather than fuel, and the company raised more than a million dollars from investors in the Lismore area.

Last year it was found guilty of misleading and deceptive conduct after proceedings brought by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, and its appeal was dismissed by Queensland’s Supreme Court last week.

But shareholder Donald Greene says those who put up the money still have faith.

“We held a shareholders’ meeting prior to these proceedings being commenced because shareholders were being canvassed by ASIC to make complaints about our own company,” Mr Green said.

“There was a motion put at that meeting of shareholders and it was unanimous; that we advise ASIC to go take a running jump, it was our company, we know what it’s doing, and we had no concerns,” he said.

“It was raised many times in those court proceedings that ASIC could not get any complaints from any of the shareholders,” Mr Greene said.

“Despite all their efforts, they couldn’t get anyone to complain about it, therefore the shareholders must have been happy and satisfied with the conduct of the company,” he said.

Lack of confidence Pak team’s biggest problem: Waqar

Lahore, Mar.30 (ANI): Pakistan cricket coach Waqar Younis has said that the national squad lacks confidence, and it is this problem that he would try to sort out during the three week training camp.

Waqar said he would use the ongoing training camp to build confidence in players ahead of next month’s ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies.

“Pakistan’s biggest problem is their lack of confidence. They wilt under pressure very easily and quickly despite having services of many talented players in their camp. So, my first task will be to mix with players and raise their morale. I hope to invigorate this team and restore faith among players,” he said.

Admitting that coaching the national squad is not an easy task, Waqar said it would be a challenge for him to lift the side following the dismal tour of Australia.

“Someone had to do the job and I dared to accept it and I assured the nation and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that I would not disappoint them,” The Daily Times quoted Waqar, as saying.

He also hailed the PCB’s decision to appoint all rounder Shahid Afridi as the captain for the ICC T20 World Championship, and said his positive approach towards the game would help the team.

“Afridi is a player with a positive frame of mind who has been bowling excellently in last two years. His mere presence in the field generates a fighting spirit among the players,” Waqar said.

He said he was confident that both of them would work together to deliver the desired results.

Fielding has been one of the major concern’s for Pakistan in the recent past, and Waqar too is aware of the fact.

“During the camp we will stress on the fielding because in a Twenty20 match, 15-20 runs can make the difference and this you can save through good fielding,” he said.

When asked about his favourites in the T20 World Cup, Waqar said it is hard to predict a winner in the slam bang version of the game , adding : “ Any team who play well on the day can win a Twenty20 match, it’s tough to predict who will win but in my opinion Australia, India and South Africa are playing well.” (ANI)

Brittany Murphy ‘used aliases to buy drugs’

New York, March 20 (ANI): A Los Angeles pharmacist has alleged that late actress Brittany Murphy used aliases to buy drugs.

Eddie Bubar, owner of Eddie”s Pharmacy, claims he has more than 100 prescriptions he filled for Brittany, her husband Simon Monjack and mother Sharon Murphy between January 2008 and August 2009.

The ‘Just Married’ actress bought drugs such as Vicodin, hydrocodone, Klonopin from the pharmacy.

Bubar alleges one of the aliases Murphy used was “Lola Manilow Murphy.”

However, he had cut off the beauty and her family just months before her death, fearing something was wrong.

“We thought there was going to be an accident there,” the New York Post quoted him as telling TMZ.com.

Apparently, another pharmacy has come up with names Murphy used as aliases, which include “Kathelyn Moore” and “Faith Gosselin.”

Meanwhile, Monjack admitted using aliases but claimed the family had themselves stopped going to Eddie”s Pharmacy.

He said: “You know how this town is. We”re the ones who cut Eddie”s Pharmacy off.”

Murphy had been found lying dead in her LA home on Dec. 21 last year.
