World Cup 2010 Betting: England Do Battle With Germany

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, Jun 27 (MARKET WIRE) —
What is it with Franz Beckenbauer? Does the legendary German player and
coach still harbour a grudge against England for 1966? Firstly he said
the team had gone backwards under Fabio Capello and resorted to the bad
old days of ‘kick and rush’ and now he is claiming that the England
players look jaded and burnt-out because of the demands of the Premier
League – is Franz getting a little jittery?

Capello owes ‘The Kaiser’ a debt of gratitude for, if he needed any
inspiration for his pre-match team talk ahead of England’s clash with the
Germans in Bloemfontein, Beckenbauer has just provided the majority of
the content. There are just signs that Capello’s normally dictatorial
style of management may have mellowed a little while England have been in
South Africa.

Six months ago it would have been unheard of for the Italian to allow his
players to have a beer on the eve of a match and contemporaries claim it
was also most un-Capello like to see the coach run on to the field at the
final whistle against Slovenia and embrace his players. Maybe that was
sparked by the relief of knowing that his GBP 6million-a-year FA contract
was still relatively secure.

There is still a general consensus that England need to improve further
if they are to eliminate a fresh, new-look Germany but both teams have
been priced up at 10/1 to win the tournament by Paddy Power, who have the
winner’s likely quarter-final opponents Argentina at 9/2. The England
betting odds have lengthened since the start of the tournament on June 11.

With Wayne Rooney still awaiting his first goal at the World Cup, the
Manchester United star’s football betting odds are out to 40/1 to finish
as the tournament’s leading scorer, the same odds as England’s hero
against Slovenia, Jermaine Defoe. Germany’s Lukas Podolski and Miroslav
Klose, who also have one goal to their name so far, are at the same price.

Only twice in their history have Germany failed to make it to the quarter
finals of the World Cup. The last time was in 1978 as West Germany,
eliminated at the second group stage when they finished behind the
Netherlands and Italy. England failed to qualify for Argentina 78. In
four previous World Cup meetings, both nations have won 1 game with the
other 2 resulting in a draw. The most recent was in 1990 when Bobby
Robson’s side went out on penalties.

Terry tells French they were wrong to expel Anelka

(Reuters) – France made a mistake in expelling striker Nicolas Anelka from their World Cup squad, his Chelsea captain and former England skipper John Terry said on Sunday.

Sports

Terry told reporters at England’s World Cup base at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus that he admired Anelka as a player and as a man and felt it was wrong to send him home on Saturday.

He said: “I see they sent him home for voicing his opinion and maybe a few of us (England players) will be sent home after this evening!”

Anelka was sent home after allegedly insulting France coach Raymond Domenech last Thursday during their 2-0 defeat by Mexico in a Group A game at Polokwane.

Terry was referring to a planned crisis meeting of the England squad with manager Fabio Capello scheduled to take place later on Sunday evening.

He added: “But I can speak honestly about Nico. He is a really good guy.

“Before he came to Chelsea, a lot negative stuff was written about him but as a person you won’t find a better man in football.

“He is very quiet but he has been in the game a long time and he knows his football so, if Nico had something to say to me, I would stand up and listen — because he is a great player as well

“It is obviously the wrong decision.”

Beckham to help ‘dumped’ Walcott deal with despair

London, June 4(ANI): England footballer David Beckham has offered to help winger Theo Walcott to come to terms with being excluded from Fabio Capello’s 23-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa.

Beckham has texted Walcott and told him to keep his chin up. He also plans a more in-depth phone chat over the next 10 days.

The 35-year-old feels a particular affection for Walcott, whom he took under his wing at the 2006 World Cup in Germany when he was skipper and Walcott was a star-struck 17-year-old, The Sun reports.

He is especially keen that Walcott realises he can still be a big part of England’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign and beyond.

Walcott had been a crucial member of Capello’s team for World Cup qualifying rounds, and had enhanced his reputation when he struck a hat-trick against Croatia in 2008.

However, following injuries and a loss of form, Walcott was left out of the final 23, which was announced on Tuesday. (ANI)

Cohen warns England fullbacks to defend first

When George Cohen, a 1966 World Cup winner and rated as England’s best-ever right back, says the country’s incumbent fullbacks need to concentrate on defending first and foremost it is worth taking notice.

Cohen, voted the best player to wear his country’s number two shirt, is as excited as anyone about this year’s tournament in South Africa but is concerned that the men vying to follow him and left back Ray Wilson into the Hall of Fame are missing some of the basics.

“Ashley Cole has really developed, you need to see him against a proper winger to appreciate how good he is and how he has become a very good fullback,” Cohen told Reuters in an interview.

“But there is a big gap between him and the ability of anyone else coming through.

“I watch a lot of these players and they need to play as fullbacks, they have to know how to defend properly. That remains their primary job.

“On the right Glen Johnson is a very good distributor and crosser of the ball but for me he doesn’t know how to defend very well. He really does need to understand that he is a fullback and defender first.”

Cohen was something of a trailblazer in the 1966 team having displaced former captain Jimmy Armfield. Alf Ramsey plotted a course to glory with his narrow-operating side but in fact Cohen, with his constant overlaps, ensured that the “wingless wonders” actually had a regular wide option.

“Bombing upfield is all well and good,” he says, “as long as you get the ball.

“The problem is if the fullback goes forward and loses the ball – the defence is usually very stretched. They have to go on to the ball with the play in front of them but lots of times these days I see fullbacks disappearing up past the halfway line and expecting a very good ball to get to them. That means they have to wait and control it and they haven’t got time.

“I know people are playing narrower now and that gives more room for fullbacks to get on the outside but Fabio Capello is becoming more defensive and might play five across the middle so the emphasis really is on the fullbacks to defend.”

Cohen, who spent his entire club career at Fulham, is unconvinced by Jamie Carragher as cover and pronounced himself bemused by the Liverpool man’s decision, now rescinded, to retire from international football.

“Carragher is not a fullback any more, he’s lost his pace – but he’s an outstanding centre back,” said the 70-year-old.

“I don’t really understand people who retire themselves. There is nothing quite like playing for your country so that is a bit beyond my comprehension. I would just say ‘sorry son, if you don’t want to play, goodbye.’”

Cohen said he liked Michael Dawson as a back-up to John Terry and Rio Ferdinand but would not risk Ledley King.

“We’ve got enough there, there is no point in taking King,” he said. “He could aggravate that injury in the first game – that’s what happened with Bryan Robson a few years ago – so I wouldn’t take him.”

James Milner’s crossing earns the Aston Villa man a place on the left midfield in Cohen’s England team while Peter Crouch is his choice to accompany Wayne Rooney up front.

“Some don’t like Crouch but he’s very tidy, he scores goals and can knock them down to Rooney,” said Cohen. “They read each other very well and I think he’s a dangerous player to have up front as well as a good defender at the set piece.”

TITLE CONTENDERS

Cohen sees parralels in current boss Capello and Ramsey and expects England to mount a serious challenge.

“They’ve got a great draw, there’s no doubt about that. After the group stage it could open up and if they can’t get past America, Algeria and Slovenia then they should go back to subbuteo,” he said.

“I’ve really enjoyed looking at how Capello is trying to put his team together. I think the players understand what they need to do under him – they know what is required, just as it was under Alf and they know if they don’t perform they are out.”

Cohen’s regular stroll down memory lane has been aided this year by his role as an ambassador for online directory 192.com’s campaign to reunite fans from English soccer’s greatest day.

“You could cut the atmosphere with a knife. It was fantastic,” Cohen said of that July day 44 years ago. “Hopefully we can revive that incredible feeling this time around.”

England win warm-up, coach blows hot and cold

England enjoyed a triumphant home send-off to the World Cup when an unfamiliar team packed with reserves outmuscled a skilful Mexico side 3-1 in their last home friendly at Wembley on Monday.

Manager Fabio Capello may have learned little that he didn’t know before a contest in which England recovered from a ragged first half showing to ensure win.

But for the Italian, it was a night to ink over a few pencilled ticks against certain names and etch a line across others as he finalises the decisions that will cut his 30-man squad to 23 for the finals in South Africa. “I wasn’t too concerned. It was very important to know where we are now – physically and mentally – and I think when we play on the counter, we look really dangerous. But we can’t just play on the counterattack.”

Goals from defender Ledley King, with a well-placed header, and striker Peter Crouch, with what appeared to be his right arm, put England 2-0 ahead before striker Guillermo Franco pulled one back from close range three minutes into first half added time. England goalkeeper Robert Green made two outstanding saves and saw another Mexican shot hit a post before the interval as England struggled to survive against spells of good possession and sharp attacks from the visitors. “The manager told us what he thought at halftime – we had to be a lot more aggressive and get in their faces,” said Steven Gerrard.

Argentina thrash Canada

In Buenos Aires, Maxi Rodriguez scored two goals and Argentina defeated Canada 5-0 on Monday in the Gauchos’ final tuneup before their World Cup opener on June 12. Argentina’s farewell match was played with FIFA player of the year Lionel Messi on the bench as coach Diego Maradona decided to rest the Barcelona playmaker.

Midfielder Javier Pastore started up front with Carlos Tevez and Gonzalo Higuain. Rodriguez scored in the 16th and 32nd minutes and Angel Di Maria added another in the 37th. Tevez scored in the 63rd and Sergio Aguero added his in 71st, seconds after coming on as a substitute.

Beckham rallies England squad to win World Cup for Brit soldiers in Afghanistan

London, May 26(ANI): England footballer David Beckham has called on Fabio Capello’s men to secure World Cup glory in South Africa to honour the British soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Beckham, who was recently in Afghanistan for a surprise visit to boost the morale of thousands of British troops serving in the country, delivered a dressing room speech to his England team-mates before Monday’s friendly 3-1 victory over Mexico.

England captain Rio Ferdinand said that Beckham told the squad to be inspired by the troops in Afghanistan.

“Becks came in the changing room and he was talking about his trip. He told us about the experience he had going over there and what is was really like. He said the lads do a great job for us,” The Mirror quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

“It is great that we are getting support from the boys in Afghanistan. With them being so far away they probably think we don”t really care about what is going on, but we do,” he added.

Earlier, Beckham, who is recovering from an Achilles-tendon injury, had spoken about his respect for the armed forces.

“I have nothing, but admiration for these young men and women and it makes me very proud to be British,” Beckham said.

Britain has around 10,000 troops in Afghanistan as part of an international force, largely fighting the Taliban. (ANI)

FIFA bars Capello from players’ session with referee

London, May 23 (IANS) England manager Fabio Capello received a set-back after FIFA prevented him from arranging a special session between his players and referee Howard Webb ahead of the World Cup.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the England manager wanted Webb to go through the new rules and regulations with his players at their training camp, but the world governing body’s rules prevented it.

England’s players will now be briefed by an official FIFA delegate who will give them a presentation on rule changes, the most high-profile of which is that players will now be cautioned for feinting in the run-up while taking a penalty.

FIFA has strict rules on officials, after its integrity unit identified referees as the ‘weak link’ in the defence against match-fixing. But there was no question about the integrity of Webb or the motivation of the England camp in trying to set up the meeting.

According to reports, referees will be kept in isolation during the competition and security guards will be posted outside referees’ hotels and no direct outside calls will be allowed to their rooms.

Capello to experiment against Mexico

Fabio Capello will rest key players and experiment with England’s more marginal World Cup hopefuls in Monday’s friendly against fellow finalists Mexico at Wembley.

The Italian, whose squad have been at an altitude training camp in Austria, said his four Chelsea players and Portsmouth goalkeeper David James would definitely not play in England’s last home game before the World Cup in South Africa.

“I think absolutely these five players don’t play,” the England manager told reporters on Sunday.

Chelsea played Portsmouth in the FA Cup final at Wembley last weekend.

With John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley and Joe Cole ruled out, and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry recovering from an ankle injury, the way is open for the likes of Adam Johnson, Michael Dawson, Ledley King and Jamie Carragher to remind the manager of their talents.

“Some players will be important for me to know their attitude on the pitch,” said Capello. “I will experiment against Mexico.”

That could mean Wayne Rooney being used as a lone striker or a switch to a 3-5-2 system.

Capello said he more or less knew the 23 players he will take to South Africa but there was still room for late changes.

He added that he had no concerns about the state of the playing surface at Wembley.

England also have a friendly against Japan in Graz, Austria on May 30 before the final 23-man squad is selected.

Freak training ground mishap is Capello’s biggest World Cup fear

London, May 21 (ANI): England boss Fabio Capello has admitted that his biggest fear over the next two weeks is a freak training ground accident claiming a victim of one of his key players.

According to The Mirror, the Italian coach had a scare last week when John Terry initially feared he had broken his right foot preparing for the FA Cup final, while Matthew Upson sustained a nasty-looking gash above his eye in a collision with Jermain Defoe on Wednesday.

Fortunately, neither injury was serious, but Capello is aware he is a hostage to fortune between now and the end of the tournament.

“For me, the World Cup is a really big challenge. I think England are one of the best teams in the world and we can win against anyone. My approach to the World Cup is relaxed now. I have to study the other countries we will be playing against and hope that everything we are preparing will be ready for the tournament,” Capello was quoted, as saying.

He added: “As England manager, I can do a lot of in-depth preparation. But then, we could get an injury to an important player, and everything I have prepared is for nothing! (ANI)

Rooney perfect role model for England team: Capello

London, May 21(ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has hailed striker Wayne Rooney as the perfect role model for the Three Lions team.

Capello also believes that it is Rooney’s constant desire to improve his skills that is supporting the striker’s quest to be recognized as one of the world’s best players.

“Wayne Rooney is one of the best talents I have ever coached. He’s like Raul in that he is a very important player and a big talent. Every time Rooney trains he wants to stay on the training pitch for as long as possible,” The Daily Express quoted Capello, as saying.

“It is really important the other players see that Rooney, one of the best players in the world, wants to stay on the pitch and wants to continue to learn,” he added.

Rooney, the Footballer of the Year, has been training freely without feeling the groin strain which troubled him towards the end of the season at Manchester United. (ANI)

Ancelotti’s ‘two long conversations’ help Cole get selected in Capello’s squad

London, May 19 (ANI): Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has urged Fabio Capello to select midfielder Joe Cole, despite starting in only 11 games for the club this season.

Cole has already been selected in the final 23 who will go to South Africa and is considered to be named in Capello’s final squad on June 1.

“Fabio has always been keen on Cole but he needed to know he wasn’t taking a risk picking him. He had two long conversations with Ancelotti who convinced him Cole is in great shape physically and mentally,” The Sun quoted a senior England source, as saying.

“The plan now is to monitor him in training and he will also get game-time against Mexico and Japan. As long as he performs he will be on the plane to South Africa,” the source added.

Cole, who has not played for the Three Lions for 18 months because of injury, is due to arrive at England’s pre-tournament training camp in Austria today.

Along with Chelsea teammates Frank Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole, plus Portsmouth keeper David James, Cole has been given extra two days to recover from Saturday’s FA Cup final.

Cole joked: “I’m looking forward to seeing the boys again, I just hope they still remember me.” (ANI)

Spain is best team on planet, says Scholes

London, May 16 (ANI): Manchester United footballer Paul Scholes has backed Spain as the World Cup favourites to lift the trophy.

Scholes has hailed Spain as the best team on the planet.

Scholes, who turned down the chance to go to South Africa this summer with England, said: “They play the best football in the world. They have the best players and Xavi is absolutely brilliant.”

England boss Fabio Capello’s general manager asked Scholes to end his international exile, The Daily Express reports.

But the midfielder, who won his 66th and last England cap at Euro 2004, asked for time to think about his decision, then said he preferred to stay at home with his family.

On his enduring fitness, Scholes said: “I’m not one for yoga. You just look after yourself as well as you can. Try to stay as fit as you can and make yourself available each week.” (ANI)

Rooney looks very tired, drained: Capello

London, May 12 (ANI): With 2010 football World Cup finals being less than four weeks away, England boss Fabio Capello has said that he has inherited a shattered and drained Wayne Rooney.

England’s chances of winning the World Cup rest on Rooney’s performance and in the last few weeks, the 24-year-old striker has fought to play despite knee, ankle and groin injuries.

Capello said: “He has played a lot of games this season. At the end of it he looked very tired.”

The Italian believes Rooney probably needed more rest after injuring an ankle against Bayern Munich and returning to England on crutches.

Rooney was back for the return leg of the Champions League quarterfinal a week later but groin problems followed, the Daily Express reports.

“After the ankle injury, the balance of his body was not the same, so it is easy to get injured,” Capello said.

Now Capello believes Rooney must rest and recuperate in order to fire on all cylinders in England’s opening World Cup game against the USA on June 12.

The England manager insisted: “I think Rooney will be fit in a short time. I hope so because he is a very important player for us.”

Capello and his staff will monitor Rooney closely in the Austrian Alps and he could be rested or used sparingly in the two warm-up games. England’s head coach is hoping the camp will recapture the spirit, which helped the team qualify for South Africa so emphatically. (ANI)

Soccer stars, coach Capello, rooting for England to lift T20 WC trophy

London, May 16 (ANI): England football manager Fabio Capello has sent good-luck messages to the cricket team ahead of their World Twenty20 final against arch rivals Australia.

Paul Collingwood and his players take on Australia looking to end 35 years of ICC trophy drought.

Frank Lampard has also sent good-luck messages to the Carribbean by sending text message to his friend Kevin Pietersen.

Capello, who sent a personal email, said: “Good luck to Andy Flower and the England cricket team in the final. It will be a fantastic achievement if they can beat Australia and a great start to a big summer of sport.”

Expectation are high as if Collingwood’s men win the game, he will join Bobby Moore and Martin Johnson as only the third Englishman to lift a World Cup in a major sport, News of the World reports. (ANI)

Terry shrugs off injury fears, to play in Saturday’s FA Cup final

London, May 13 (ANI): Chelsea skipper John Terry, hurt his right foot tackling Daniel Sturridge in training, but is hoping to play in Saturday’s FA Cup final after giving England manager Fabio Capello a World Cup scare.

Terry’s injury raised fears that England’s ‘curse of the metatarsal’ has struck again. He went to hospital wearing a protective boot but scans revealed no major problem.

Gary Neville, David Beckham, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney all suffered broken metatarsals in the build-up to previous World Cups. So it was relief all round when Terry’s scan proved negative.

“I took a slight knock but with such an important match on Saturday the right course of action was to put a protective boot on.

“The scan has shown there is no break. I’m hoping to train tomorrow if not Friday and, of course, play in the FA Cup final,” The Sun quoted Terry, as saying.

The slight injury had been a worry for both Carlo Ancelotti and Capello, who announced his initial 30-man World Cup squad on Tuesday.

Losing Terry would have been a major blow for both coaches. (ANI)

Capello warns England players not to seek transfers during World Cup

London, Mar 13 (ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has warned his players not to arrange transfers during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Capello warned that if any of his squad members is caught negotiating moves to other clubs it will distract England’s attempts to win the tournament.

Ironically, Capello was criticised for taking part in a commercial venture during the competition, The Sun reports.

It would have caused problems, as it involved the England boss rating his own players for financial gain. But that was given up under pressure from the Football Association.

He said: “I hope the players do not change their team or have negotiations. It disturbs the players all the time.”

David James, Joe Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Matthew Upson and Emile Heskey are players who could be on the move this summer. (ANI)

Three Lions order spicy sauces to dull injury-related pain

London, May 12 (ANI): The Three Lions stars have ordered a vast stock of mouth-numbing Tabasco, Peri-Peri and Wasabi paste sauces to be shipped out to their training camp in South Africa.

According to The Sun, the red-hot dips are famed for their anti-inflammatory properties and can be used to dull the pain of sporting injuries.

It quoted sports nutritionist Laura Street, as saying: “Having so many hot and spicy condiments on the England team”s official food list may seem strange, but there is a logic at work here.”

“It is important to enjoy food, but if the players become bored of what”s on the menu, they”re likely to eat less and that will affect their performance. Having hot sauces to spice up their meals should keep their appetites up,” Street added.

Tesco is jetting out the sauces, ordered by the Football Association.

The lads have also requested crates of custard, strawberry jam, organic chocolate and English mustard — plus bottles of brown sauce.

The team has shunned traditional tea, requesting herbal, peppermint, fruit, Earl Grey, and jasmine blends.

Healthier items in the player”s grub shipment include seaweed sheets, pine nuts and dried apricots, plus Italian Arborio risotto rice, extra virgin olive oil, Giacobazzi balsamic vinegar for boss Fabio Capello.

The players need carbs like rice and high sugar snacks, including jam and dried fruits to fuel their bodies for the 90 minutes on the pitch. (ANI)
