Ancelotti backs Chelsea to win Treble next year

London, May 16 (ANI): After winning Double, Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti has set his sights on a Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup Treble next year.

Ancelotti said that he can fulfill owner Roman Abramovich’s ambition of winning Champion League without adding players to his squad.

“We wanted to win the Champions League this year. It didn’t happen but we will try next season. This team has the quality to win the Champions League without change. We have to be happy with these trophies. It’s right to have a celebration because we had a fantastic season,” News of the World quoted Ancelotti, as saying.

“For me it’s right to have a holiday but I want to think about next season. We know Chelsea have never won the Champions League and it’s one of our aims for next season. And we want to win the Premier League and the FA Cup again.

“We will start next season having won the Double. I think that will put more attention on us, but this is normal. We are proud to have this attention,” Ancelotti said.

Skipper John Terry celebrated the unique achievement in the club’s history and put Ancelotti on the same level as ‘Special One’ Jose Mourinho.

“Jose is always going to be a massive part of this football club. But other managers have come here in the last three or four years and not really lived up to expectations.

“Now Carlo has come in and in his first season he has achieved something that no other manager or group of players have ever managed at Chelsea. So Jose will never be forgotten – but nor will Carlo and this group of players,” Terry said. (ANI)

Chelsea must now dominate, says skipper Terry after title triumph

London, May 11 (ANI): Blues skipper John Terry has said that Chelsea FC must now dominate Premier League football watching Manchester United dominate for three years.

“The last couple of years, we”ve pushed them a little bit closer. It”s hurt so, so deep inside. That”s how the Chelsea fans must be feeling after they had a taste of success. In the past few years, we”ve had success in the FA Cup and done really well there. But it”s been heartbreaking in the league. It”s horrible when you”re sitting there watching the other team pick up the trophy,” Terry said.

“It”s been three years and we thoroughly enjoyed it. That”s what it”s all about. We want to kick on again next year, year after year just keep winning the trophy back-to-back.”

Ancelotti will have the authority to shape the team even more in his own image after this success and as Terry paid tribute to the Italian he suggested Chelsea no longer need to apologise for the way they win trophies.

Terry added: “I”m proud of everything we have done this year. (ANI)

Remarkable Lampard just keeps on giving for Chelsea

Pipped as Chelsea’s player of the year by Didier Drogba and somehow left out of the Premier League team of the year, Frank Lampard nevertheless remains the most important player in his club’s title-winning season.

James Milner, Antonio Valencia and Darren Fletcher — all chosen ahead of Lampard in his fellow professionals’ team of the season — have their talents but if you asked 100 managers which midfielder they would prefer in their team you could reasonably expect a landslide victory for the Chelsea man.

Perhaps because he scores so many goals every year people forget what a rare talent Lampard possesses and this season he has surpassed even his own high standards.

He has scored 27 goals, including 22 in the league. Even with 10 of them coming via penalties, that is an astonishing figure for a midfielder and maintains a stunning average of more than 20 goals a season for the past six years.

As well as his uncanny ability to drift into scoring positions Lampard has his fair share of assists and also exerts a calming, authoritative presence.

His self-control is also exemplary as this season he has not collected a single red or yellow card.

Listed as one of Jose Mourinho’s “untouchables” four years ago, Lampard continues to defy the cult of rotation.

This season he played in 36 of Chelsea’s 38 league games, in all five rounds of the FA Cup as well as six Champions League games.

At 31 he remains one of the fittest players in the league and it is no co-incidence that so many of his goals come in the last 20 minutes of games.

His timing has been key in the wider picture too as he produced a goal rush just when Chelsea needed it.

Since the 1-1 draw seven weeks ago at Blackburn Rovers that seemed to hand the title initiative to Manchester United, Lampard has scored 11 goals in nine games, including a remarkable four in the 7-1 rout of Aston Villa.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti, like all his Chelsea predecessors in the last nine years, recognises that Lampard is an extraordinary talent.

“He has scored more than 20 goals and has shown everything,” said the Italian. “Strong character, he never misses a training session, he has played with consistency. I think he gets over eight out of 10 every time and I never give 10 out of 10.”

Ray Wilkins, Chelsea’s midfield maestro in the days when there was nobody to pass to, is also a huge admirer.

“When you see the goals Frank has scored and the level he has played to then you have to say he is world class,” said Ancelotti’s assistant.

“He has the ability to get forward but also the ability to get back and defend. He trains exactly the same as he plays and if there are any young kids listening to what I am saying about Frank, then this is the example to follow.”

Ancelotti set to axe Chelsea stars despite a booming season

London, Apr 24(ANI): Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that he will axe some players from his club regardless of possible Premier League and FA Cup titles.

Ancelotti will bring in players from the academy, and is also expected to sign at least two new players, meaning a total of seven stars from the current crop may have to leave.

“The only sure thing will be that there will be five players from the academy in the squad next season. Some players will maybe move on. Some we will move,” The Sun quoted Ancelotti, as saying.

“It’s not because we don”t have the money. It’s because we want to give strength to our Academy. We have very good young players and this is the time to put them in the squad for next year. They are able to stay in Chelsea’s squad,” he added.

He further insists the Stamford Bridge fans will be delighted to see fresh blood coming through, especially if they start next season as champions.

“They’ll be happy if Chelsea win the title and the FA Cup. After that, I think they will see some new players in the future,” Ancelotti added.

According to reports, heading for the exit door are Hilario, Paulo Ferreira, Juliano Belletti and Deco.

Midfielders Joe Cole and Michael Ballack are yet to sign new deals and may be forced to find new clubs. (ANI)

Drogba keeps Chelsea on course for double

Didier Drogba sent holders Chelsea on its way to a 3-0 win over top flight rivals Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley overnight.

The Ivory Coast striker broke the deadlock in the 68th minute before Florent Malouda and Frank Lampard completed the win with two late goals as the Premier League leaders remained on course for a domestic double.

Chelsea will now return to Wembley on May 15 where they will face the winners of Sunday’s second semi-final between fellow Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth.

This was no routine victory but once Drogba had turned home John Terry’s shot on goal following a mistake by Villa defender Richard Dunne – the forward’s fifth Wembley goal – the outcome was never in doubt.

Malouda added a second in the 89th minute, connecting with Michael Ballack’s right wing cross and Lampard completed the scoring in added time by capping a fine run with a composed finish.

“I always say I’m lucky, it’s an honour for me to be here and to play in a stadium like this one,” said Drogba.

“The FA Cup is really special to us and when I have the chance I will try to score.

“I had two chances before and I was a bit unlucky, the first one was a great block from (Stephen) Warnock and the third chance maybe was the one that was least expected, but that’s the goal.”

For Villa, defeat meant a second Wembley disappointment this season after its League Cup final defeat at the hands of Manchester United in February.

Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti had warned his side they would face a very different Villa team to the one that capitulated 7-1 at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago.

The Italian reasoned that Martin O’Neill’s side would be wounded by that defeat and anxious to make amends.

And so it proved with the Midlands side impressing during the opening exchanges when they were unfortunate not to claim an early breakthrough.

Ancelotti made just one change to the side that beat Villa first time around, recalling Drogba in place of Nicolas Anelka.

“I’ve been in this position before, I know why I was not starting, it’s not a problem,” Drogba said.

“The objective is to win the game. We have six games left to go with the final and we have to win them all.”

Penalty claims

Initially, though, the Chelsea striker saw little of the ball as Villa’s central midfield pairing of James Milner and Stiliyan Petrov grabbed early control of the game.

But Villa were furious in the 16th minute they were denied a penalty.

England striker Gabriel Agbonlahor’s pace had upset the Blues backline throughout the early stages, but on this occasion he caused problems with his back to goal and appeared to be tripped by John Obi Mikel as he attempted to turn inside the box.

The Villa man was convinced he had been unfairly grounded – and O’Neill reacted furiously when referee Howard Webb ignored the claims for a penalty.

Villa continued to enjoy the greater share of possession but they were almost caught out when Drogba was only just beaten to a loose ball in the area by a desperate lunge from defender James Collins.

Drogba then almost forced a costly error out of Warnock. The left back inexplicably headed the ball into Joe Cole’s path under pressure from Drogba and it took a point blank save from keeper Brad Friedel to smother the danger.

But Chelsea finally made the breakthrough after half-time when Dunne failed to clear Malouda’s corner, diverting his header to the feet of Terry who struck a left foot shot that was turned home by Drogba.

Reina commits long-term future to Liverpool

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has signed a new six-year deal with the English Premier League club and hailed it as probably the best news of his life.

“To play for Liverpool is very special. I’ve been here for five years and now I will be here for six more and it’s very exciting,” Reina told the club’s website.

“I’m delighted to sign a new contract. It’s probably the best news of my life that I’ll be here for the next six years.”

The 27-year-old Spaniard, who joined the Merseyside club in July 2005 from Villarreal, has been one of manager Rafa Benitez’s best signings, notching up 177 league appearances.

Reina, who won the Super Cup in 2005 with Liverpool and the FA Cup a year later, said his family were big fans of the area and the native Scouse accent as well.

“My wife told me from the beginning she was more than happy here. My kids enjoy it and they have picked up the Scouse accent already. I am really proud of that,” said Reina, whose side is sixth in the league.

“In the years ahead they will speak much more Scouse too.”

Adebayor’s return will fire Man City into Champions League

London, Mar 29 (ANI): Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini has said that Emmanuel Adebayor’s return to the side will fire them into the Champions League.

The Manchester City striker is available again after a four-game ban following a red card at Stoke City in the FA Cup.

Now, Mancini will put him straight back into the side alongside Carlos Tevez at home to Wigan tonight as City aim to get back on track following their defeat to Everton at Eastlands last week.

“We have missed Emmanuel a lot and his return will give us a major boost for the run-in. If we can play with Manu and Carlos for the remaining matches, I think we’ll be fine,” The Sun quoted Mancini, as saying.

Adebayor has nine league goals this season from 18 starts while Tevez has 16 from 24.

Mancini will need both to keep on firing right until the end of the season if they are going to win the big battle for that fourth spot.

“I believe all the teams around us have a number of difficult games during the next month and for that reason, anything could happen. We are all fighting for one position and for me it is vital we forget the Everton match and move on – that”s how we work,” he said.

“Wigan have a good manager who likes his teams to play football and it will be a difficult game. We need to prepare for eight battles,” Mancini said. (ANI)

Premier League fine adds to Pompey’s woes

Cash-strapped crisis club Portsmouth was fined a reported seven-figure sum by the English Premier League (EPL) overnight for several rule breaches this season.

Bottom of the Premier League, Portsmouth, was effectively condemned to relegation last week when the EPL imposed a nine-point penalty for the south coast club’s entry into administration.

The fine has been reported as being around one million pounds and is understood to relate to the club’s late payment of wages to playing staff – something that has happened four times since August – and late payment of outstanding transfer cash.

The fine will be paid to the EPL out of Portsmouth’s share of television money.

Despite debts of some 65 million pounds, Portsmouth is still in the semi-finals of this season’s FA Cup – a tournament it won in 2008 – where it will face either Fulham or Tottenham, while on Saturday it defeated fellow struggler Hull City 3-2 at Fratton Park.

But even after that win, Portsmouth was still 11 points behind second-bottom Hull with just eight league matches left this season.

Pompey’s survival bid continues

Troubled English Premier League club Portsmouth received a boost in its attempt to avoid liquidation overnight as the British tax authority accepted the team’s move into administration.

Officials at HM Revenue and Customs had insisted Portsmouth’s owner Balram Chainrai did not have the legal right to put the club into administration, but they have now abandoned that claim.

Chainrai appointed Andrew Andronikou as the club’s administrator last month and he cut 85 jobs at the club on Wednesday (local time).

“The Revenue has accepted the administration is valid,” a spokesman for the club said.

FA Cup semi-finalist Portsmouth, currently bottom of the Premier League, now faces a nine-point deduction for entering into administration and the punishment is almost certain to lead to its relegation at the end of the season.

Pompey have debts totalling over 80 million pounds ($131.64 million) and became the first Premier League club to enter administration last month.

Massive savings are needed to keep the club afloat but players – the highest earners on the payroll – cannot be made redundant due to protection afforded to them by the Professional Footballers’ Association.

On Wednesday, 85 of the cash-strapped club’s employees were made redundant.

Andronikou has considered trying to persuade the Premier League to let him sell players outside the transfer window and then get them loaned back to Portsmouth, where they would become non-playing members of the squad.

But with an FA Cup semi-final against Fulham or Tottenham looming, Andronikou is adamant no players will leave Fratton Park before the Wembley showdown next month.

Arsenal goalkeeper fears Fabregas may quit Gunners out of ‘boredom’

London, Aug 8(ANI): Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia believes that former defender Kolo Toure quit the Gunners as he was bored, and warned that the same could happen with captain Cesc Fabregas, if they don’t win a trophy this year.

Toure ended his seven-year stay at the Emirates Stadium to seek fresh adventure with Manchester City following his 14 million pound switch.

“Kolo lived through great times at Arsenal. He won the league as part of a great team, the Invincibles. But when you are at any place for a long time, you sometimes need a change and to change your way of life, the city where you live, the team-mates you see every day,” The Sun quoted Almunia, as saying.

“Maybe he was a bit bored, a bit tired of being with the same people every day, in the same atmosphere. He needed a change and you could see it in his face he was not really, really happy in his last period at Arsenal,” Almunia added.

The 32 year-old further said that he was sensing something similar with skipper Fabregas, who is frustrated as Arsenal haven’t been able to win any major trophy since the 2005 FA Cup.

“With Cesc, the same could happen but he has a lot more to offer Arsenal yet. Kolo gave everything to this club and won titles. He gave 100 per cent,” Almunia said.

However, Almunia does believe that Fabregas would give his best effort this season to bring a trophy, which has been long evading them.

“With Cesc, this season we’ll see the best of him and he’ll help us win something. Then he’ll be happy to be here and will do what he wants to do,” Almunia added. (ANI)

Ronaldo still hungry for more titles

Madrid, July 9 (ANI): Real Madrid’s world-record pounds signing Cristiano Ronaldo has said that he is still hungry for more trophies despite his astonishing stint with the Red Devils, and promised fans at Los Galacticos that he will bring in more trophies for the club.

“I’m still hungry for more titles and for me it’s as if I haven’t won anything. This is a different stage in my life and my career and I have the same ambition as when I started. I’m starting from zero and I want to win more titles at Madrid than I did at Manchester,” The Independent quoted Ronaldo, as saying.

During his six-year stint with Manchester United, Ronaldo has won many trophies and individual awards.

He was part of the teams that won three league titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup and the Club World Cup among others.

Among individual awards he was named FIFA world player of the year, the Ballon d’Or, FIFPro’s player of the year, and even won the European Golden Shoe as the continent’s top scorer.

“After Manchester there are few places better to be a great footballer. That’s why I’ve taken the decision to come here, where they are used to fighting to win everything. It’s what I’ve always liked, to play and win titles,” Ronaldo said.

“I like that our fans are ambitious and I’m sure that we can win the titles that will get Madrid back to the top in both Spanish and European football. We must keep our feet on the ground though and not think that we can win everything in one go,” he added. (ANI)

Obama inspires Arsenal

London, June 28 (ANI): US President Barack Obama has become a significant talisman in Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger’s team talks in their quest to end their four-year run without a trophy.

Dutch striker Robin van Persie, who is also fascinated by Obama’s incredible success, admits he is trying to copy the great man’s demeanour, reports News of The World.

Wenger has introduced Obama’s ‘Yes we can’ philosophy into the dressing room.

The Gunners have been trophy less since they beat Manchester United to win the 2005 FA Cup, but Wenger believes Obama’s influence can provide the missing spark.

Wenger loathes excess.

“We fly to games in an ordinary plane, not a luxury jet. Air conditioning in hotels is banned, because it’s bad for sportsmen. We’re not even allowed a fridge. All drinks have to be at room temperature – ice-cold drinks are bad for you. These are things that could make that one per cent difference,” van Persie said.(ANI)

Hiddink will be a party pooper even if Chelsea wins FA Cup

London, May 30 (ANI): Guus Hiddink has admitted he will be a party-pooper even if Chelsea win the FA Cup.

Dutchman Hiddink said that he would have to leave Chelsea’s party early to join up with his Russia squad to prepare for their World Cup qualifier in Finland.

Hiddink, Chelsea’s interim coach, will only get to say a brief farewell to his players before AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti takes charge of Chelsea next week, reports The Mirror.

He said: “If everything goes well, we’ll have a beer or two. I will have to leave the same night. I will have to leave almost straight after the game to be with Russia to prepare for the World Cup qualifier. (ANI)

‘We were beaten by the better team,’ admits Ferguson

Rome, May 28 (ANI): Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to Barcelona after his team’s 2-0 Champions League final defeat in Rome, admitting that the Catalans deserved their triumph and had played better than a sub-par United.

“We got into good positions, but in fairness we were beaten by the better team,” said a magnanimous Ferguson.

“I don’t think we played as well as we can but we were against a good team,” he added.

Ferguson admitted that he gambled on his attacking line-up, playing Wayne Rooney on the left and Cristiano Ronaldo at centre-forward. But neither could penetrate the Barcelona defence as United lost to their opponents’ feared combination of Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi, who scored a goal apiece.

“The first goal was a killer for us,” The Sun quoted Ferguson, as saying while referring to Eto’o's opener after 10 minutes.

“We started vibrantly but once they scored we were up against it. We couldn’t keep the ball all night.”

Ferguson said his side will learn from their defeat and take plenty of positives from a season in which they won the Premier League and Carling Cup, and were chasing an historic quadruple before being beaten in the FA Cup semi-final.

“They have done well,” Ferguson said of his team.

“We have had a long season – this was 66 games. They need credit for their resilience and for some of the football they have played.”

United defender Rio Ferdinand also admitted that Barcelona were the better side in Rome, ruing two “soft goals” that cost his team the match.

Barcelona striker Thierry Henry said that his team had to beat the world’s best to claim glory. (ANI)

Wenger feels like he has killed someone

London, May 16 (ANI): Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger feels that the amount of criticism he has copped in the recent past, makes him feel like he has killed someone!

“When you look now at people assessing the situation, it has just become ridiculous. Every year, every day you feel like you killed somebody. It is unbelievable. If you do not distance yourself from it you think, ‘What kind of world are we living in?’

“We lose to Manchester United, who have 10 times more resources than us. But they are the best in the world. If you play tennis and you lose against Rafa Nadal, you can still say you are a good player. The way we have gone is to rely on a young team which goes to the semi-finals of the Champions League and the FA Cup,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.

“This club is in a fantastic situation. Look at its shape, it’s financial situation and the quality of the squad – I’m pretty envious if I am outside of this club. What we have achieved in the past six months is amazing. For me, this is one of the best seasons considering where we were in November,” he added. (ANI)

Wenger’s Young Guns’ issue a war cry

London, May 5 (ANI): Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes the hour is approaching when the Gunners will confirm what he has been telling all along, that his young team will dominate European football for years to come.
Wenger is in no doubt his kids can overturn the 1-0 deficit from the semi-final first leg at Manchester United.

He has the silverware in his sights, whatever the bookies might think. The boss acknowledges Arsenal were fortunate to concede only a single goal at Old Trafford but claims they will make United pay for failing to kill the tie off – even though it is eight years since the Gunners last beat them by two clear goals.
“I’m very confident the team will produce a magnificent performance. We play at home, where we have a strong record in the Champions League. For many people we are super-outsiders but I personally believe we will do it,” The Sun quoted Wenger, as saying.
“If I had said in November that we will be in the semi-finals of the Champions League and FA Cup and go 21 games unbeaten – as we have in the Premier League – you’d have called an ambulance,” he added.
“I feel very proud of this team because they have been through difficult periods and shown great mental strength. And they have faced much more adversity than all the other teams I have had here. The progress this team has made since the start of the season has been remarkable,” he said.
Should Arsenal beat United, they could set up a final against Thierry Henry’s Barcelona – the team that beat them 2-1 in 2006. (ANI)

Wenger’s reputation dependent on Champions League gong success, says ex-Arsenal star

London, May 4 (ANI): Former Arsenal favourite Kanu is of the view that coach Arsene Wenger’s whole managerial reputation rests on whether he can guide his team to Champions League success this season.

The pressure is firmly on Wenger to beat Manchester United in tomorrow night’s semi-final return, and then go on to overcome either Chelsea or Barcelona in the final.

Kanu, who served under Wenger at Arsenal for four and a half years, is the proud owner of a Champions League winners’ medal from his days with Ajax.

Portsmouth veteran Kanu believes the Gunners can overturn the 1-0 deficit they suffered in the first leg at Old Trafford, but will have to be at their very best to achieve their goal.

“There is pressure on Arsene Wenger to win it this time, because I feel this is the best chance he has of doing it. He needs to win it and if he doesn’t, it is going to be difficult for him,” the Daily Express quoted Kanu, as saying.

“Whatever he might say, inside his mind, Wenger will want to win it. He has won the League and the FA Cup, and the Champions League is the ultimate. When you are in the Champions League you are playing against other countries, so if you win that, it is when you can say you are a great coach.

He has won the trophies here, so now he has to win the Champions League,” he added. (ANI)

Giggs ready to re-enact 1999 goal celebrations against Gunners

London, Apr.28 (ANI): Ryan Giggs is ready to re-enact one of the most famous goal celebrations in history.

It is 10 years since Giggs skipped past four players on a 60-yard run before smashing in a sensational late goal to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park.

The Welsh wizard was so overcome by the emotion of the occasion that he whipped his shirt off, whirling it round his head and kept running all the way back to the half-way line.

Giggs admits he might just expose that rippling torso all over again if he gets the winner against the Gunners which clinches United’s place in the Champions League final in Rome.
Recalling that amazing night in 1999, Giggs said: “It was a great moment for me personally and for the team. It was a massive turning point in the season that ended in the Treble. That’s what football is all about. You never know what’s going to happen next. I used to say I would never do it again but you never know. If you score an important winning goal again in the last minute you might just do it.”

At the venerable age of 35, Giggs remains a key figure in United’s assault on the Quadruple.

He has spent more than 20 years at Old Trafford and his PFA award from his fellow pros is a fitting tribute to a magnificent career. (ANI)

Fergie to follow 1999 treble-winning blueprint

London, Apr. 24 (ANI): Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson plans to rotate his players like he did during the 1999 treble-winning spree as he bids to lead his club to the Quadruple.nited’s boss rang the changes for Wednesday’s victory over Portsmouth, just days after the club’s FA Cup KO. And he plans to continue to rotate his players, as they look to add the title and Champions League to the Carling Cup and Club World Cup.

“This is the time I love best. Non-stop football, every match of immense significance. I will be deploying the full range of our resources as I seek to give the players the energy you need at this level. It’s what I did when we won the Treble, resting players and bringing others in as I tried to pick teams fizzing for the fray,” The Sun quoted Fergie, as saying.

“I will juggle the squad in the hope we can progress in both the Premier League and the Champions League,” he added. (ANI)
