Art dealer pleads guilty to duping De Niro, McEnroe among others in $120M fraud case

London, March 19 (ANI): Lawrence Salander, a New York art dealer, has pleaded guilty to duping tennis star John McEnroe and actor Robert De Niro among others in a nearly 100 million dollars art investment fraud.

The 60-year-old now faces an imprisonment of six to 18 years and will have to recompense 120 million dollars to victims under a plea agreement, wherein he pleaded guilty to 28 counts of grand larceny in state Supreme Court in New York.

He admitted to pulling off a string of tricks including selling off shares of the same artwork to several owners and pocketing the proceeds from sales.

McEnroe lost 2 million dollars after investing in a share of two paintings, Arshile Gorky”s “Pirate I and II.” According to authorities, the share was simultaneously sold to another collector, and McEnroe never recovered the money.

Prosecutors said numerous paintings by De Niro”s father were sold without the actor”s permission.

“Lawrence Salander”s desire for an extravagant lifestyle turned long-time friends and trusted business colleagues into his personal piggy banks,” the Telegraph quoted Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, as saying in a statement.

Salander, the former owner of Salander-O”Reilly Galleries, told the court: “I did everything I have described knowingly and intentionally.”

Justice Michael Obus said Salander”s sentence would be less than the 25 years in prison under the plea agreement.

Salander will now appear before the court on May 20 for proceedings regarding the restitution.

Some of his other victims included Earl Davis, son of American abstract painter Stuart Davis, who lost 6.7 million dollars and the Bank of America, which lost 2 million dollars after Salander lied about paintings he owned to secure a loan. (ANI)

Katona’s ‘hubby wants to leak couple’s sex tape on net to ease cash crisis’

London, Sept 16 (ANI): Already troubled Kerry Katona fears getting into more mess as hubby Mark Croft wants to sell off a steamy sex tape of the couple to alleviate their cash crunch, it has emerged.

Pals say Katona’s former taxi driver hubby tried to sell the idea to her, which has made the ex-Atomic Kitten even more anxious about losing the custody of her two daughters, Molly and Lilly Sue, to their father and divorced hubby Brian Nicholas McFadden.

“Mark’s not given up hope by any means. He thinks it’s a guaranteed earner, which could make them anything up to half-a-million,” a pal was quoted by the Daily Star, as saying.

Friends say the 39-year old Croft has no plans to change his mind and he intends to use the cash from the tape’s sale to fund his extravagant lifestyle.

A friend said: “Mark thinks he knows it all and is determined to take over every aspect of Kerry’s life. He thinks that a sex tape of them, which somehow found its way on to the internet, would earn them a lot of cash – at least 250,000 pounds and possibly as much as 500,000 pounds.

“Mark is absolutely obsessed with money and has told Kerry that it could be a life-saver for them, but at the moment she’s having nothing to do with it.

“She’s scared stiff of anything so tacky being the last stop in her attempts to hold on to her two little girls by Brian McFadden.” (ANI)

Women have sex to ‘relieve boredom, pity and to cure a migraine’

London, Sep 7 (ANI): Women indulge in sex not for love and passion, but for various other “unromantic” reasons- including relieving themselves of boredom, out of pity for a man and even to cure a migraine headache-says a new book.

‘Why Women Have Sex’ by Cindy Meston and David Buss has highlighted 200 reasons as to why women have sexual intercourse.

While attraction ranks way down in the list, it seems that women go to bed with their partners as a way of relieving boredom, keeping the peace, curing a headache and even as a thank you for a nice dinner.

“Research has shown that most men find most women at least somewhat sexually attractive, whereas most women do not find most men sexually attractive at all,” the Telegraph quoted the authors, who are both psychology professors at the University of Texas, as saying.

The researchers interviewed 1,006 women as research for the book, and found some very surprising answers.

One revealed that she did it for a spiritual experience, as she thought it to be “the closest thing to God”.

Others listed “cure for stress headache”, “to make my sexual skills better” and “for a clearer complexion”.

However, the majority (84 per cent), admitted that they had sex to ensure a quiet life or to bargain for their partners to carry out household chores.

“I have sex to relieve the boredom.Because it’s easier than fighting. Plus it gives me something to do,” said one of the interviewee.

While another admitted: “I had sex with a couple of guys because I felt sorry for them.”

One of the surveys carried out by the authors revealed that one in ten women admitted having sexual intercourse in return for presents, or lavish meals.

Responses included “he bought me a nice dinner” or “he spent a lot of money on me early on”, “he gave me gifts early on” and “he showed me he had an extravagant lifestyle”. (ANI)

The police have recovered 12 mobile phones from their possession and about 15 cases of snatchings in the past three months at Prashant Vihar, Rohini and Saraswati Vihar have been solved through these arrests.

The police said the gang targeted women travelling in rickshaws and was specially active near the Metro stations.

Meanwhile, Amit Kumar (31), who was arrested for being allegedly involved in snatchings in the Defence Colony area revealed to the police that he comes from an educated family. “He himself holds an MBA degree, has done a hotel management course and was presently working in a transport company at Madipur. The trio reportedly chased the accused for about two kilometres and finally nabbed him.

Tennis champ McEnroe helps to nab art dealer Lawrence Salander

Washington, Mar. 27 (ANI): Former tennis champion John McEnroe helped prosecutors to nab Art gallery owner Lawrence Salander, who was arrested on hundred counts of larceny, fraud, forgery, and perjury.

Salander, 59, is accused of stealing millions, including two million dollars from the famed tennis star.

The bankrupt gallery owner was once a respected figure in the New York art world, and is said to have swindling two-dozen investors and clients out of 88 million dollars to finance his extravagant lifestyle.

“He’d just sell paintings that he didn’t own. He’d have all kinds of excuses for why he couldn’t make immediate delivery,” the Daily News quoted Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, as saying.

Salander also double-sold shares in paintings to unwitting investors. That’s allegedly how McEnroe, an ardent collector, lost two million dollars.

Salander said he would sell abstract expressionist Arshile Gorky’s Pirate I and Pirate II, and split the profits with McEnroe, prosecutors said.

“Unbeknownst to McEnroe, Salander sold the same half interest to a banker named Morton Bender, officials said. Then he sold Pirate II for 2.5 million dollars and pocketed all the proceeds,” prosecutors said.

McEnroe found out and forced Salander to turn over Pirate I, which he then put on exhibit at Christie’s. When McEnroe tried to get it back from the auction house last year, he was rebuffed because Bender had a lien on it.

McEnroe hit Salander with a civil suit in 2007. Prosecutors then contacted him.

Salander has also been sued by Robert DeNiro, who alleged that he sold a dozen of his father’s paintings. The DeNiro paintings aren’t part of the 100-count indictment, but the probe isn’t over. (ANI)
