Stora Enso CEO Jouko Karvinen Comments on Second Quarter Results Announced Today

HELSINKI, Finland, July 22, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — “Robust second quarter
performance”

“Our second quarter results are strong by all measures. Operating profit
excluding NRI and fair valuations at EUR 213 million, cash flow from operations
at EUR 305 million, ROCE at 10.5% and net cash position at EUR 856 million are
all not only huge improvements from a year ago, but also testimony to the early
and often difficult actions we have taken in the past three years. Our robust
performance this quarter was facilitated by external factors, especially the
significant volume recovery from the very low levels in the second quarter of
2009, our clearly lower cost base and the weaker euro. We also benefited from
pulp price increases and actions we took on prices and customer mix in almost
all segments. The fact that all six segments except Newsprint show a strong
year-on-year improvement in earnings is another positive proof point for
continuing on our path of managing those factors we can affect.

“Although the second quarter performance was generally strong, the losses that
have accrued in Newsprint clearly show that the structural overcapacity issues
have not disappeared. This unfortunately means that the recent decision to shut
down permanently two newsprint machines at Varkaus was not only necessary, but
not even enough to solve the issue. We will therefore continue to actively
manage pricing and customer mix to maximise our earnings, but also review the
earnings performance of all of our assets, and when necessary will not hesitate
to take actions.

“The outlook for the third quarter is mixed and still uncertain. Although
volumes have recovered from the very low levels of 2009, clearly market demand
in all paper segments has still been and will for a long time remain clearly
below the pre-crisis levels of 2008. To operate profitably in that environment
requires continued focus on costs and capacity management – as before, waiting
for the good times to return will help nobody. In addition to the price rises
implemented in the second quarter, we have announced further price increases
that will already have an impact in the latter part of the third quarter – and
we expect sequential pricing improvements of varying degrees in practically all
segments, even in Newsprint. This is absolutely essential to keep our earnings
at an acceptable level as increases in wood and other costs now clearly start
coming through in our operations. Specifically, we foresee Wood Products facing
an issue later in the year due to rapidly rising sawlog costs, which is why we
have signalled that we are planning to take temporary curtailments as required
at our sawmills. At the same time, however, I am glad to see the wood trade in
domestic wood in Finland has returned closer to normal levels. Now we must
ensure there is no repeat of the excessive wood costs and high inventory levels
of late 2007.

“Stora Enso has demonstrated that it is willing and able to do difficult things
to safeguard and improve the Group’s performance. We will continue on our path
of never-ending improvement of what we have, and in parallel building our future
in new markets and new products. And we are already well on our way.”

Stora Enso is a global paper, packaging and wood products company producing
newsprint and book paper, magazine paper, fine paper, consumer board, industrial
packaging and wood products. The Group is the world leader in forest industry
sustainability. We offer our customers solutions based on renewable raw
materials. Our products provide a climate-friendly alternative to many
non-renewable materials, and have a smaller carbon footprint. Stora Enso is
listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index and the FTSE4Good Index. Stora Enso
employs some 27 000 people worldwide, and our sales in 2009 amounted to EUR 8.9
billion. Stora Enso shares are listed on NASDAQ OMX Helsinki (STEAV, STERV) and
Stockholm (STE A, STE R). In addition, the shares are traded in the USA as ADRs
(SEOAY) in the International OTCQX over-the-counter market.

Research and Markets: Sony Corporation – SWOT Framework Analysis

DUBLIN–(Business Wire)–
Research and Markets
(http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/002722/sony_corporation) has
announced the addition of the “Sony Corporation – SWOT Framework Analysis”
company profile to their offering.

SWOT Analysis, is a strategic planning tool used to evaluate the Strengths,
Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business
venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project
and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and
unfavorable to achieving that objective.

The aim of any SWOT analysis is to identify the key internal and external
factors that are important to achieving the objective. SWOT analysis groups key
pieces of information into two main categories:

Internal factors – The strengths and weaknesses internal to the organization.
External factors – The opportunities and threats presented by the external
environment.

The internal factors may be viewed as strengths or weaknesses depending upon
their impact on the organizations objectives. What may represent strengths with
respect to one objective may be weaknesses for another objective. The factors
may include all of the 4Ps; as well as personnel, finance, manufacturing
capabilities, and so on. The external factors may include macroeconomic matters,
technological change, legislation, and socio-cultural changes, as well as
changes in the marketplace or competitive position. The results are often
presented in the form of a matrix.

SWOT analysis is just one method of categorization and has its own weaknesses.
For example, it may tend to persuade companies to compile lists rather than
think about what is really important in achieving objectives. It also presents
the resulting lists uncritically and without clear prioritization so that, for
example, weak opportunities may appear to balance strong threats.

Here”s why we sigh

Washington, May 11 (ANI): Here””s why we sigh: it is critical for keeping our breathing systems flexible, says a research.

Scientists have found that sighing resets breathing patterns that are getting out of whack and keep our respiratory system flexible.

The study by researchers at the University of Leuven in Belgium involved rigging up eight men and 34 women with sensor-equipped shirts that record their breathing, heart rates and blood carbon dioxide levels over 20 minutes of quiet sitting.

What the scientists were looking for were specific changes over one-minute periods encompassing sighs that could confirm or contradict the ””re-setter hypothesis”” for the function of sighing.

“Our results show that the respiratory dynamics are different before and after a sigh. We hypothesize that a sigh acts as a general re-setter of the respiratory system,” Discovery News quoted Elke Vlemincx and her co-authors as saying.

The re-setter hypothesis is based on the idea that breathing is an inherently dynamic and rather chaotic system, with all sorts of internal and external factors changing how much oxygen we need and keeping our lungs healthy and ready for action.

This sort of system requires a balance of meaningful signals and random noise to operate correctly.

Occasional noise in a physiological system — like the respiratory system — is essential because it enables the body to learn how to respond flexibly to the unexpected, Vlemincx said.

“A sigh can be considered a noise factor because it has a respiratory volume out of range,” said Vlemincx.

In this experiment, a sigh was defined as at least two times as large as the mean breath volume.

“A breath is defined by a specific volume (depth), the amount of air we breathe in and out, and a specific timing, the time it takes to breathe in and out. Both these characteristics vary: from one moment to the next we breathe slower, faster, shallower, deeper,” Vlemincx said.

Vlemincx said that when breathing is in one state for too long, the lungs deteriorate. They become stiffer and less efficient in gas exchange.

Therefore, in times of stress, when breathing is less variable, a sigh can reset the respiratory system and loosen the lung””s air sacs, or alveoli, which may be accompanied by a sensation of relief, Vlemincx said.

The study has been published in the latest issue of the journal Biological Psychology. (ANI)

Rescue chopper faces bumpy ride

The region’s rescue helicopter service says it is vital that it raises a million dollars more than it did last year.

General manager Kris Beavis says donations dropped by about 12 percent during last year’s global financial crisis, but costs are still rising.

Mr Beavis says this year’s operating budget of $6.5-million is almost double what it was four years ago.

He says records show only about 1.3 percent of local residents make a regular donation to the service.

“That was a bit confronting for us in terms of a statistic, and I’d make the point that’s direct donors to the service,” Mr Beavis said.

“It doesn’t include doorknock donors where they don’t take a receipt etcetera, but in terms of the direct donors that we’re aware of that come to us through payroll or direct deposits toward us, it’s one in a hundred,” he said.

“Our costs have continued to rise with external factors such as the labour market for aviation quite different to CPI… so we’ve gone back and said ‘okay to be sustainable long term, we need to increase our donor base’,” Mr Beavis said.

Six facts about the female orgasm revealed by modern science

London, May 29 (ANI): While female orgasm has been the subject of so many myths and folk beliefs, scientists are trying their best to know more about the mystery behind the phenomenon.

And now, after some intense field research, a team of experts have uncovered six facts about the female orgasm, as revealed by modern science, reports New Scientist magazine.

The six facts are as follows:

The G spot is real

The G spot is a small region in the vagina that, if stimulated, can produce wildly intense orgasms – or so goes the popular claim. But, since decades, strong evidence for the region’s existence was harder to find than the spot itself.

However, in 2008, an Italian research team solved the mystery after they found anatomical differences between women who could have G-spot orgasms and women who couldn’t. And since then, researchers have since begun teaching women with G spots how to put them to use.

The brain switches off

It’s folk wisdom that people can’t think straight when they have sex on their minds, and a brain scanning study showed that many areas of women’s brains were deactivated during orgasm, including those involved in emotion.

Many women can’t have orgasms

According to a 1999 survey, around 43 per cent of women in the US have some sort of problem with their sex lives.

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is so common that the very idea that it is a medical disorder has come under attack and thus efforts to develop drugs to treat it are underway.

Genes affect orgasm frequency

According to the first genetic study of the female orgasm, up to 45 per cent of the variation in women’s ability to have them could be down to genes.

Many women never have orgasms during intercourse, and some also cannot have them through masturbation. Some of this may be down to external factors like upbringing, but the study showed the genetic factor is significant.

Technology can help

Perhaps the most extreme solution for sexual dysfunction among women is the so-called “orgasmatron”-an implant inserted into the spinal cord, which stimulates the user when switched on via a remote control.

Despite an initial struggle to find subjects for clinical testing, the device is now in development.

Some mystery remains

The female orgasm is a puzzle for evolutionary biologists. It is unclear why women should have orgasms at all, and it is particularly baffling that so many women should be unable to have orgasms during penetrative sex, but able to have them by masturbation.

According to researcher Elisabeth Lloyd, this implies that female orgasms are an evolutionary accident. Like male nipples, they persist simply because there is no good reason to get rid of them. (ANI)

Premature ejaculation may be a genetic disorder

Washington, May 28 (ANI): A Finnish study suggests that premature ejaculation may be a genetic disorder.

Researchers from Turku came to this conclusion after interviewing more than three thousand men-all pairs of male twins and their older or younger brothers-about the first time they had sex.

Most of the persons surveyed revealed that they had suffered from erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation at their first sexual encounter.

The research confirms the belief that these common problems are often related to external factors like intoxication or nervousness due to peer pressure.

However, according to the researchers, premature ejaculation also appears to be strongly linked to genetic factors, and is not just psychological.

A previous study conducted by researchers in The Netherlands also linked premature ejaculation to a gene for serotonin regulation in a group of two hundred men.

The current study independently shows a genetic link to premature ejaculation in a much larger group, and rule out environmental factors.

Lead researcher David Goldmeier says that the increasing evidence for a genetic cause of premature ejaculation opens the way for the development of new drug treatments, something that many men might benefit from.

He and reviewer Taylor Segraves, however, insist that medicines will not be the only solution. They say that psychotherapy will continue to be a valuable and useful form of treatment for sexual dysfunctions, even for those with a genetic cause.

The study has been published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy. (ANI)

“Shares were up on external factors, such the rise in the US consumer confidence index,” Adkinson Securities analyst Mongkol Puangphaetha said. (dpa)

Government to present budget in first week of July: Pranab

New Delhi, May 26 (ANI): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said the government would present the budget for 2009-10 in the first week of July.

“I would not like to have a second batch of vote on account. The budget will be presented in the first week of July,” he told a news channel.

Dwelling on issues to be addressed in the budget, he said, “There are certain sectors which have been very badly hit by the global financial crisis-external factors. Export sector, particularly — textiles, leather, gems and jewellery. Their problems have to be addressed. We have strength in economy; Indian economy is resilient. Whatever the economy needs will be done.”

Earlier, Mukherjee had expressed hope that the government would be able to present the budget in time to avoid uncertainties.

Mukherjee had presented an interim budget in February. He had sought the approval from the Parliament for withdrawal of money from the consolidated fund only till July 31.

The government is required to get the budget passed by Parliament by July 31 as the vote-on-account (which allows government to withdraw money from Consolidated Fund) sought in the interim budget comes to end on July 31. (ANI)

Genetic pathway responsible for plant growth identified by scientists

Washington, May 21 (ANI): Researchers at Iowa State University, US, have discovered a previously unknown genetic pathway in plant cells that regulates plant growth.

Yanhai Yin, an assistant professor in genetics, development and cell biology, Iowa State University, examined signaling mechanisms of a plant hormone called brassinosteroids.

The hormone controls the growth of cells.

“The brassinosteroids (BRs) have a major impact on how large the plant grows,” said Yin.

“Previously, we knew that steroids promote growth,” said Yin. “In model plants like Arabidopsis (a relative of mustard) and crops such as corn and rice, if you have more steroids, you have more growth, and if you have less steroids, you have less growth and the plant is smaller,” he added.

Now, Yin knows that the HERK1 (named for Hercules – the Greek and Roman god who possessed superhuman strength) pathway, induced by BRs, is controlling much of that growth.

There are many other internal and external factors such as light, nutrition and hydration that effect plant growth, but the HERK1, along with some unknown signals, have a great effect.

Yin and his team of Hongqing Guo, assistant scientist; Lei Li, Huaxun Ye, and Xiaofei Yu, all graduate students; and Alexandria Algreen, undergraduate student; have shown that by over-expressing HERK1, they were able to increase a plant’s size by 10 to 15 percent.

By under-expressing HERK1, the plants were about 50 percent smaller.

Now, Yin and his group are trying to find what regulates HERK1 and how HERK1 controls growth.

Understanding what make plants get bigger could be a critical component when producing grain and bio-mass for biofuels.

“With that knowledge, maybe we have one more tool to manipulate corn and rice if we want more grain, or if we want more mass for bio-energy crops,” said Yin. (ANI)

2ND ROUNDUP: British police admit “concern” over G20 death

London – A police officer in Britain at the centre of a row over the death of an innocent man during last week’s G20 protests in London has come forward, Scotland Yard said Wednesday.

The development came amid a growing furore over amateur video footage published by the Guardian newspaper Wednesday which showed a police officer hitting the man before “shoving” him to the ground on the fringes of the protests on April 1.

Ian Tomlinson, a 47-year-old newspaper seller, died from a heart attack minutes later.

“Earlier today a Metropolitan Police Service officer identified himself to his team leader as being potentially involved in the incident shown on the video footage,” a Scotland Yard spokesman said.

A total of four officers had now come forward with “potentially relevant information” regarding the investigation into the incident.

London Mayor Boris Johnson has described the footage as “very disturbing” and several members of parliament (MPs) have urged a criminal investigation.

In an unusual move, Scotland Yard chief Paul Stephenson conceded that Tomlinson’s death raised “obvious concerns” that needed to be fully investigated.

“My thoughts are with Mr Tomlinson’s family at this time. The images that have now been released raise obvious concerns and it is absolutely right and proper that there is a full investigation into this matter,” said Stephenson.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said it was “extremely important” that the probe into the “sad death” of Tomlinson should be completed “as quickly as possible.”

She did not rule out that the current investigation by the police watchdog, the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), would be followed by a criminal investigation.

Late Wednesday, the IPCC ordered a second post-mortem examination in an effort to determine if there were any external factors behind the heart attack.

Video footage published Wednesday on the website of the Guardian newspaper showed Tomlinson walking with his back to a group of police officers, hands in his pockets, when a helmeted officer in riot gear lunges at him from behind.

Tomlinson, who was not protesting, is seen falling heavily to the ground and complaining to the officers before being helped to his feet by passers-by on April 1, the eve of the summit of Group of 20 (G20) nations.

Tomlinson walked on, but collapsed with a heart attack shortly afterwards near the Bank of England, where the demonstrations had taken place and protestors were still milling around.

Initial police reports made no mention of any police contact with the victim who, according to his family, was not involved in the protests.

David Howarth, the justice spokesman of the opposition Liberal Democratic Party, said the footage showed a “sickening and unprovoked attack” by police that required a full criminal investigation.

His call was backed Wednesday by Labour MP David Winnick, who urged Smith to make a “full statement” to parliament after the current Easter recess.

Winnick, a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee, said questions would be asked about “misleading” police statements in the hours after Tomlinson’s death.

He compared the case to the killing by police of innocent Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes by anti-terrorism officers in London in July, 2005.

“In view of the unfortunate death of Jean Charles de Menezes four years ago, there is all the more reason for concern, which I share, that all the circumstances of this case must be thoroughly looked into,” Winnick urged.

The new photographs showed that Tomlinson had been “hit by a police officer,” said Winnick. There would, therefore, be “anxiety about the thoroughness of the inquiry.”

The family of the dead man also asked for “answers” and called for witnesses to come forward.

The video footage had confirmed that there had been “contact” between his father and the police, said Tomlinson’s step son, Paul King.

“Now we’ve seen it, we want answers,” he said. (dpa)
