Fish Fingers, Biomass Part of Birds Eye’s New Green Strategy

One of the U.K.’s leading food brands is embarking on a major green investment program as it seeks to make good on pledges to deliver deep cuts in carbon emissions, water consumption and environmental impacts.

Birds Eye Foods last week launched a new wide-ranging sustainability strategy, dubbed Forever Food, that includes targets to cut carbon emissions 30 percent against a 1990 baseline by 2020, reduce water consumption used in manufacturing by 20 percent against a 2007 baseline by the same date, and ensure zero waste is sent to landfill from U.K. operations by 2015.

The strategy also steps up the company’s sustainable sourcing strategy, pledging to ensure that 100 percent of wild and farmed fish used in its products come from certified fisheries by 2012.

Speaking to BusinessGreen.com, Peter Hajipieris, chief technical, sustainability and external affairs officer at the company, said a wide range of projects were already in the pipeline to ensure the targets were met.

He said the bulk of the savings would be delivered through improvements to energy and water efficiency at the company’s facilities, but admitted that efficiency savings would only get the company so far. As a result, it is looking at investing in renewable energy systems.

“We are looking at technologies and processes that can improve efficiency, such as recirculating oil when flash frying, but we are also analyzing different renewable energy technologies,” he said. “One option we are looking at is a biomass system that could be partly fueled by packaging waste.”

He added that biodigestors could also be used at a number of the company’s factories to generate energy from any unavoidable food waste.

Hajipieris also revealed that the company has already found an innovative way of saving energy during the production of its famous frozen fish fingers.

“What you find is that a lot of sustainability issues are interconnected,” he explained. “We found when we were looking at reducing packaging levels, that making the size of the box for fish fingers smaller also cuts the energy it takes to freeze them, as they contain less air that you have to cool.”

Kerala Government terms IPL a gambling business, distances itself from Kochi franchise

Thiruvanthapuram, May 14 (ANI): The Kerala Government had distanced itself from the Kochi cricket team in the Indian Premier League (IPL), contending it is more of a gambling business than a game.

M Vijayakumar, Sports Minister of Kerala said: “IPL is not just about cricket, rather it is a gambling business and this is a matter of serious concern. We do not agree with this kind of business and neither do the sports fans and lovers of the game of cricket, who share the same opinion.”

Earlier, former Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor met Kerala Chief Minister V S Achutanandan to seek his government”s support for the Kochi IPL franchise.

Vijaykumar, however, denounced cricket”s richest and most lucrative tournament, saying it was more of a gambling venture.

On Wednesday, the consortium held talks with the Kerala Cricket Association on holding home matches in the state itself during the next season of IPL.

Tharoor was forced to resign from his ministerial post over his alleged involvement in the IPL controversy. He had participated in the discussions as a ”mentor”.

Opposition parties have accused Tharoor of misusing his ministerial position to influence the 333 million dollar bid for the Kochi team. (ANI)

Making his comment on the twitter, Tharoor said his resignation would be worthwhile only when it leads to reforms.

“Looking forward to thorough inquiry into the IPL. If my resignation leads to real reform, it will be worthwhile. Our cricket shld (should) be clean,” he said.

Tharoor posted new tweet on Saturday early morning.

He also thanked his supporters for standing with him during a difficult time.

Tharoor who was regular on twitter and has lakhs of followers on the social networking site, went silent after he was struck in the IPL-Gate last week.

Tharoor asks PM to clear his name

New Delhi, Apr 20 (ANI): Former Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday said that he has asked the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, to have the IPL cash row charges against him thoroughly investigated to ensure that his name is cleared.

In an address to Parliament, Tharoor said: “I have asked the Prime Minister to conduct a thorough investigation into the charges and want to clear my name that has been ”besmirched”.

He said he had committed nothing improper or illegal, but had resigned from the cabinet in the strongest moral traditions” of the party as he did not want to be an embarrassment to it.

He further said that he was deeply wounded by the fanciful and malicious charges levelled against him

“I am new to Indian politics…but I have a long record of public service untainted by allegations of financial irregularity,” Tharoor said.

Speaking for a short while in his native tongue Malyalam, Tharoor drew on the emotional appeal of his Thiruvananthapuram constituency and received some support from Kerala MPs.

Tharoor resigned on Sunday night after the Congress Core Committee asked him to do so.

The Income Tax (I-T) department has given a clean chit to Tharoor, saying he did not benefit from the Kochi -IPL deal.

The ministry said the I-T department is probing IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi”s offshore money and trying to find out if stakeholders are fronts for Modi.

Tharoor is reportedly in trouble after Modi tweeted to reveal that Sunanda Pushkar, a close friend of Tharoor, had been gifted sweat equity worth Rs.70 crores in the new Kochi team, which was sold for Rs.1530 crores last month.

Modi in his email to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Shashank Manohar had stated it was Tharoor who called him and instructed him not to reveal the identities of the stakeholders of the Kochi IPL franchisee.

Mukherjee, Chidambaram and Pawar meeting on IPL cash row ends

New Delhi, Apr.20 (ANI): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Union Agriculture Minister and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) strongman Sharad Pawar met here this morning, reportedly to discuss the cash row controversy surrounding the Indian Premier League (IPL) and its impact on the future of the sport and the politics of the nation.

The meeting has just ended, and Pawar is now meeting with BCCI President Shashank Manohar at his residence to discuss what action, if any, has to be taken against Lalit Modi, the chairman of the IPL Governing Council, for his perceived role in the controversy that saw the Minister of State for External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor, resigning.

Earlier in the day, Pawar distanced himself from Modi

He told reporters that he had nothing to do with the IPL.

“I am not dealing with this subject, am not a member of IPL committee. I am not aware of any BCCI meeting or impending decision. I have not received any notice of the meeting, only read in the papers that such a meeting has been scheduled for April 25,” said Pawar.

But sources said that Manohar, who has also refused to comment in public on the issue, is in New Delhi to meet Pawar to discuss Modi”s removal.

A final decision on Modi will only be taken by the BCCI after the IPL finals on April 25. The course of action is likely to be decided today, a private television channel reported.

The Cricket Board has also rescheduled its Working Committee meeting from April 24 to May 2 as it wants the IPL Governing Council — which is expected to meet here on April 26, a day after the IPL final — to first discuss the issue.

Pawar spoke with Modi at an ICC Board meeting in Dubai last night, where the two were attending a board meeting of the International Cricket Council (ICC). (ANI)

New Delhi, Apr 19 (ANI): The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice-President, Rajeev Shukla on Monday said there is no need to ban the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Addressing reporters outside Parliament, Shukla said the BCCI would discuss the issue after the finals on April 25.

Earlier on Monday, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee assured Parliament that all financial aspects of the IPL will be probed, and none who are found guilty, will be spared by the law.

“I can assure the honourable members that all aspects of IPL, including its source of funding, from where the funds were routed how it has been invested, all these aspects are being looked into, and the appropriate action as per law will be taken,” he added.

Mukherjee assured the House that none of the guilty would be spared.

New Delhi, Apr 19 (ANI): Minister of Indian Overseas Affairs Vayalar Ravi on Monday said the Central Government should look into the role of big cash coming into the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket championship.

Addressing reporters outside Parliament here, Ravi alleged the IPL was ”glorified gambling” run with black money.

“It is for the government to look into the whole system, what is this IPL, who are these people, where the money comes? It is a matter of concern,” he said.

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav said the government should take over after scrapping cricket bodies, including the IPL and the national cricket board.

“IPL should be scrapped, government should take it over and nationalise it. The game of IPL should continue. All the cricket bodies like the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) should be scrapped,” said Yadav.

“There is no full stop after the resignation of Tharoor, question is whether he is guilty or not, whether the post has been misused or not? Everyday new revelations regarding IPL are coming into light,” said CPI-M politburo member Brinda Karat.

“It is said that the Income Tax Department knew for the last six months, even then the government did not intervene. Who are the patrons of the IPL in the government, this also should be investigated and that is why a Joint Parliamentary Committee is required,” she added.

“Unless the Government wants to take the postion that they have nothing to do with this, which I think would be very wrong indeed,” she added.

Her comments came just hours after the Union Finance Ministry said it is carrying out a detailed investigation into the teams” auction records and accounts.

Shashi Tharoor explanation questioned, compromise formula being explored

New Delhi, Apr 17 (ANI): The Congress Party, according to sources, seems not convinced over the explanation given by Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor on his alleged misuse of office to help his friend Sunanda Pushkar to get ‘free equity’ in Kochi Franchise.

Reportedly, a section of the Congress Party moved a compromise formula according to which if Sunanda Pushkar surrenders her stake in IPL Kochi, Tharoor may get a reprieve.

Pushkar has over 70-crore stake in Kochi IPL team, which she is free to sell it at any point.

Congress Party said it would have looked better if Shashi Tharoor had at least offered to resign.

Earlier, Tharoor said during an interview to a private news channel that he would not resign. (ANI)

Tharoor has an agenda, says Lalit Modi

Mumbai, Apr 16 (ANI): Indian Premier League (IPL) Commissioner Lalit Modi on Friday accused Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor of having an agenda in promoting the Kochi IPL fanchise, and asserted that he won”t let that agenda succeed.

“Tharoor has an agenda. I won”t let it succeed,” said Modi.

A private television channel quoted Modi as saying that he won”t allow any hidden agenda to take over IPL.

Modi further said that Tharoor wants the team to be based in Abu Dhabi, which he wouldn”t allow.

“I can”t understand why the team needs to be in Abu Dhabi. Shashi Tharoor”s agenda will be shut down, believe me,” said Modi.

Brushing aside all media reports that said Modi may step down from the post of IPL Commissioner and that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Shashank Manohar may be appointed as the Co-Chairman of IPL, Modi said: “I am the IPL Chairman and will stay on.”

He also said neither the IPL shareholders nor the BCCI knew who Sunanda Pushkar was, and did not care who she was.

It may be recalled that the media had said that Pushkar had acquired Rs 70 crore equity in the Kochi IPL franchise.

About the reported intention to shift the Kochi IPL franchise to Abu Dhabi, Modi said that the “IPL is an Indian League and no IPL team would be allowed to establish a base outside India.”

Meanwhile, Tharoor has said that he did not misuse his official position and has no role in the Indian Premier League (IPL) bidding process.

“My ministerial position irrelevant,” said Tharoor, adding that he had no role in the Kochi IPL consortium.

A private television channel quoted Tharoor as saying that his role was that of an informal mentor, adding that an IPL team is the dream of many cricket lovers in Kerala.

“The notion of proxy for me is insulting,” said Tharoor, adding that the reference to Sunanda Pushkar has hurt him, NDTV reported.

“I was in no position to influence the bid,” said Tharoor, asserting that money was never a motivating factor for him.

Tharoor is reportedly in trouble after Modi tweeted to reveal that Sunanda Pushkar, a close associate of Tharoor, had been gifted equity worth Rs 70 crores in the new Kochi team which was sold for Rs 1530 crores last month.

Modi in his email to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief Shashank Manohar had stated it was Tharoor who called him and instructed him not to reveal the identities of the stakeholders of the Kochi IPL franchisee.
