Clinton believes will see U.N. consensus on Iran

Wed, Mar 31 08:56 AM

The United States is optimistic the U.N. Security Council will reach an agreement on what to do about Iran’s nuclear program, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday.

Clinton, saying sanctions were a part of diplomacy, said Iran had repeatedly shown an unwillingness to fulfill its international obligations over the last 15 months.

“That’s the basis on which I express my optimism that we’re going to have a consensus reached in the Security Council,” she told a news conference after a meeting of foreign ministers from the Group of Eight leading nations.

Western members of the U.N. Security Council are pressing for more sanctions against Iran. China is more reluctant, saying it wants to see a diplomatic solution.

“We see a growing awareness on the part of many countries, including China, as to the consequences of a nuclear-armed Iran,” said Clinton.

‘Dash-and-flash’ police express remorse after fines

The lawyer representing four policemen who have been fined for a drunken ‘dash-and-flash’ on Brisbane’s bayside say they are extremely sorry for their actions.

Lawyer Brendan Ryan appeared in the Cleveland Magistrates Court on their behalf.

They all pleaded guilty to a public nuisance charge.

Mr Ryan told the court the men had been drinking, but only exposed themselves for a few seconds at a time.

Speaking outside the court, he said they regretted their behaviour:

“You can be assured that these four police officers will never engage in anything unbecoming again,” he said.

Magistrate Russell Warfield said the courts and the community expect police to uphold a certain set of standards and they should have known better.

He said it is another example of people committing offences under the influence of alcohol.

The officers were fined $300 each.

Coming soon: a horror story on American Fritzl’s victim?

London, Sept 20 (ANI): Publishers and Hollywood studios have begun a multi-million dollar bidding war for the rights to sex slave Jaycee Dugard’s horrifying life story.

Fresh details of the American Fritzl’s victim have emerged, including that in the early days of her captivity, the terrified schoolgirl was so hungry she ate bugs and worms in the rambling back garden where she was held in tents and lock-up sheds, reports The Daily Express.

She had to use a garden hose to shower outside, even in winters, say detectives guarding her and her two daughters, fathered by kidnapper Phillip Garrido.

However, the public apparently is desperate for the full story of how Jaycee, now 29, survived after being snatched on her way to a school bus stop when she was only 11.

A New York literary agent, who estimates the book and film rights to be worth up to 12million dollars, said: “You couldn’t dream up a script like this. Americans can’t wait to hear the story from the girl who lived it.”

A Hollywood studio producer said: “Everyone is in the market for this story. Poor Jaycee’s life may have been hell for 18 years but she’ll never want for anything for the rest of it.”

Garrido, a registered sex offender, has been linked to six child abductions and murders stretching back years within a 400-mile radius of the ramshackle home in Antioch, California, where Jaycee was held. (ANI)

Veraval riots: Nanavati Commission not to issue notice against Modi

Ahmedabad, Sep.19 (ANI): In a major reprieve for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the Justice Girish Thakorlal Nanavati Commission on Saturday confirmed that it would not be issuing any notice to him in connection with the communal riots in Veraval.

However, the commission has asked the State Government to give it transcripts of the conversations that took place prior to the riots, during the riots and in its aftermath.

The commission has so far given a clean chit to Modi in the post-Godhra events. The Nanavati Commission said there was no evidence to show there was lapse in Modi’s or his ministers’ role in providing protection, relief and rehabilitation to the victims of communal riots or in the matter of not complying with the recommendations and direction given by the National Human Rights Commission.

Communal attacks on Muslims took place in Gujarat between February and May 2002.

The riots occurred after the burning of the Sabarmati Express. According to official figures tabled in the parliament, more than a thousand people were killed (790 Muslims and 254 Hindus) in the violence after the train incident. More than two hundred and fifty thousand people were displaced (about 200,000 Muslims and 40,000 Hindus).

Organizations such as Human Rights Watch criticized the Indian government for failure to address the resulting humanitarian condition of people, “overwhelming majority of them Muslim,” who fled their homes for relief camps in the aftermath of the events.

Many of the investigations and prosecution of those accused of violence during the riots have been opened for reinvestigation and prosecution. According to an official estimate, 1044 people were killed in the violence, including those killed in the Godhra train fire. Another 223 people were reported missing, 2,548 injured, 919 women widowed and 606 children orphaned. About 100,000 Muslims and 40,000 Hindus were in relief camps. (ANI)
