Beer sale in Delhi touches 15 lakh mark in May

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI) It is that time of the year when chilled beer brings good cheer. With Delhi reeling under scorching heat, beer shops are out to make hay while the sun shines — more than 15 lakh beer cases have been sold in May.

“A total of 15,228,29 beer cases were sold in last month in the capital,” said a senior excise official. Simply put, with each case containing 12 bottles, Delhi”s beer consumption should touch a new high this summer.

The sale of beer had touched 14,80,951 cases in April. While there is a growth of about 30 per cent in beer market, the Excise Department is hopeful of meeting the target of Rs 1700 crore in the current fiscal.

For those not familiar with the spirit of the season, Delhi has about 37 brands of beer in the light, strong and canned segment to choose from. “Though mild beer caters to a large part of the beer consumers, the strong beer sale is also picking up,” the official said adding, “there is also a market for canned beer.

” The sale of beer generally picks up from March and the demand peaks during May-June every year. The beer market in India, including Delhi, offers vast scope for growth, the official said.

‘Gilani’s fake son-in-law’ is a master forger on the loose in Lahore!

Lahore, June 26 (ANI): Sharing a surname with some famous personalities of the world would obviously make people proud, but in Pakistan, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s name is being utilized by tricksters for fraudulent activities.

Pakistan police has registered a case against a man named, Tasawarul Hassan Gilani for swindling a person while pretending to be a close relative of the prime minister, The Daily Times reports.

Claiming to be the son-in-law of the prime minister, Gilani sold a car having fake documents to a person named Shahzada Ahsan.

Ahsan, who complained about the forgery to the police, said he never thought that he would be cheated by Gilani, as he pretended to be Yousuf Raza Gilani’s close relative.

Ahsan said that surname ‘Gilani’ removed all doubts from his mind.

He added that he was shocked to the core, as the Excise Department confirmed that vehicle’s documents which Gilani had given him were fake.

Ahsan claimed that the ‘fake Gilani’ decamped him after taking 0.6 million rupees for starting a business besides pocketing the car’s price.

The swindler is still out of the police’s clutches. (ANI)

Liquor shops in Goa on strike against poll panel’s diktats

Panaji, April 10 (IANS) Wholesale and retail liquor outlets in Goa have downed their shutters in an indefinite strike to protest what they claim are ‘harassing diktats’ of the Election Commission.

The liquor traders are protesting the increased vigil enforced on them by the state excise department, which is keen on clamping down on misuse of liquor to influence voters during the Lok Sabha polls.

‘The strike will carry on until the excise department and the Election Commission fulfil our demands,’ Bernade Sapeco, convener of the Liquor Traders Association, told IANS Friday.

‘While the norm during every election was to submit a daily sale statement to the excise office by the end of the day, this time the excise officials are hounding us by asking for immediate on the spot statements for inspection. How is that possible?’ Sapeco said.

There are nearly 800 liquor wholesalers in Goa, while the number of retail outlets runs into thousands.

‘This is a tourist state. Tourists come by the busloads and are in a hurry. It is difficult to keep track of liquor sale by the hour. Our demands are to put an end to these dictatorial orders by the EC (Election Commission). We would not mind submitting a daily statement of sale,’ he said.

Speaking to IANS, state excise department officials said that they were working out a compromise formula with the liquor vendors to ensure that the alcohol sale in the state does not drop drastically.

‘Sale of liquor earns the state a lot of revenue. These are temporary hardships. We are looking at resolving the issue by evening today (Friday),’ an official said.

The state is known for the prolific number of liquor outlets lining its streets.

Liquor in Goa is cheaper than in neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka, thanks to a policy of low tax on liquor. The state excise department had netted nearly Rs.80 crore (Rs.800 million) in taxes from sale of liquor alone during the last financial year.
