Amelle Berrabah ‘quits’ Sugababes

London, September 19 (ANI): Singer Amelle Berrabah has quit the all-girl band Sugababes, it has emerged.

The beauty was apparently unhappy after a row with bandmate Keisha Buchanan.

“Amelle has been desperately unhappy for a while. She was going to try and resolve things, but it must have got too much for her. They haven’t been able to overcome their row,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

Last week her family had even called cops fearing that she was kidnapped when she locked herself away in her North London home after the argument with Keisha.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Eurovision contestant Jade Ewen is reportedly set to replace Amelle.

The insider revealed: “Jade is ready to replace Amelle. She is going to be shooting a video with them in Los Angeles on Monday.” (ANI)

Abba stars Andersson, Ulvaeus to enthral fans with first joint composition in 15yrs

Melbourne, June 24 (ANI): About 35 years after rocking the world with Eurovision smash Waterloo, sexagenarian Abba songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus are now all set to enthral their fans with their first joint composition in 15 years.

Story of a Heart, credited to The Benny Andersson Band, features Swedish singer Helen Sjoholm.

It is said to be the first international single for the band, which Andersson has fronted for 20 years.

The single is one of 13 tracks on the album, also called Story of a Heart.

The album features several older Orkester songs translated into English, as well as material only previously released in Sweden. Ulvaeus has written lyrics for it.

“I wanted to make music based on the Swedish folk tradition, but with new songs written by me,” the Herald Sun quoted Andersson as telling Abba’s official website.

Some industry experts believe that the pair’s album will move quickly up the charts.

“It’s very good. It’s very Abba but why not?” Melbourne music stalwart Molly Meldrum said.

“There’s a whole new audience who are so internet-savvy, people will discover it – it’ll get immediate international attention no mater what,” he added.

Story of a Heart will be released in Melbourne on July 6. (ANI)

Over 150 Abba impersonators claim sing-along world record

London, May 15 (ANI): More than 150 Abba impersonators on Friday claimed to have made a world record after joining up for a sing-along.

The attempt to make the world record was made in London’s Leicester Square.

According tot reports, the Swedish quartet’s fans were seen donning flares and hot pants for a rendition of Eurovision classic Waterloo.

The decision as to the eligibility of the attempt to create “the largest gathering of Abba impersonators to sing at one time” as a world record now depends upon the judgement of Guinness World Records.

“This year’s Eurovision betting points to a case of Britain’s Not Got Talent,” the Telegraph quoted Andy Lulham, of Betfair, which organised the event ahead of Saturday’s Eurovision Song Contest, as saying.

“UK entry It’s My Time, written by Lord Lloyd Webber and sung by Your Country Needs You winner Jade Ewen, is a 23-1 outsider, well behind the 9-5 favourites Norway,” Lulham added. (ANI)

ABBA’s Benny Andersson slams Eurovision

London, May 13 (ANI): Swedish musician Benny Andersson has spoken against the talent show, Eurovision Song Contest, which had helped his band Abba to find fame.

Andersson, 62, said ahead of the 54th annual final in Russia that the show, which had helped ABBA win with their ‘Waterloo’ song 35-years-ago, now “means nothing” to him, as it has gone downhill after their win.

“What it is now is possibly a great television event, but for music it means nothing,” the Scotsman quoted him as saying.

“I don’t watch Eurovision. It’s become so huge.

“It was a smaller scale then than it is now. It might have been a little bit more meaningful in the 50s and 60s and when we entered but after that, I’m not sure if anything ever happened.

“Musically, it’s not what it should be. But as a television show it’s a good show,” he said.

Andersson also added that it was a good spectacle “if you can bear sitting for such a long time”, and revealed that he had over the years been asked to help with the Swedish entry in the contest but had no interest in doing so.

Russia is hosting the contest for the first time this year after Dima Bilan won the competition in Belgrade last year.

The event, expected to attract a television audience of at least 100 million, is being staged at the huge stadium built for the Moscow Olympics in 1980. (ANI)

German HIV-positive pop star arrested over unprotected-sex charges

Darmstadt, Germany – A member of Germany’s leading female pop band has been arrested for allegedly having unprotected sex despite being HIV positive, lawyers said Tuesday. Nadja Benaissa, a 26-year-old singer with the group No Angels, is to have had unprotected sex with three men in 2004 and 2006, the state prosecution in the town of Darmstadt said.

One of the three men is now HIV positive, possibly as a consequence of his sexual relations with Benaissa.

No Angels are Germany’s most successful girl band, with 5 million album sales in their first three years. The group was formed in 2000, when they won in the Popstars talent competition on German RTL television.

Benaissa was arrested Saturday night in a Frankfurt Disco, German daily Bild reported. The newspaper said the singer was about to give a solo appearance.

Benaissa was charged with dangerous bodily harm, and kept in custody as the investigating judge decided there was a risk she would repeat the alleged deed.

If found guilty, Benaissa could face six months to ten years in prison.

The singer has one daughter, born in 1999.

Eurovision rejects Georgia’s ‘anti-Putin’ song

London, Mar 11 (ANI): Organisers of Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow have rejected Georgia’s entry because it “pokes fun” at Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Apparently, the disco-funk song, We Don’t Wanna Put In, is controversial, and it is against the competition’s rules to allow political content in entries.

“No lyrics, speeches, gestures of a political or similar nature shall be permitted,” The BBC quoted a contest spokesperson, as saying.

This year’s Eurovision song contest is to be held on May 12 and Georgia has been given until March 16 to “either rewrite the lyrics of the song, or to select another song for the contest”.

The song was chosen by a public vote and jury, and was due to be performed by female trio 3G along with male vocalist Stephane.

The song, which has a distinct 1970s feel, contains the chorus: “We don’t wanna put in, the negative move, it’s killin’ the groove.” (ANI)

Russian Madonna to visit Scotland after invite from Lulu

London, Mar 5 (ANI): Considered to be Russia’s Madonna, pop star Valeriya is all set to visit Scotland after being invited by singer Lulu.

Valeriya, 40, met Lulu at a London charity bash in January, and was convinced to make an appearance later this month with performer, Mick Hucknall, supporting Simply Red’s Scots dates.

Valeriya met Lulu after recording a version of Stayin’ Alive with Bee Gee Robin Gibb, the twin brother of the Scots star’s late ex-hubby Maurice.

“Lulu told me I had to come to Scotland,” the Sun quoted her as saying.

“I told her I’d never been anywhere in the UK outside of London and she wasn’t happy. She said I hadn’t lived unless I visited her home country.

“I met Lulu at a charity night celebrating The Bee Gees in London in January.

“When I grew up in Russia, there were few Western acts that broke through the Iron Curtain, but The Bee Gees were huge.

“When I was recording my first English-language album I was honoured that Robin agreed to fly all the way to Moscow to sing a new version of Stayin’ Alive with me.

“And of course people in Russia had all heard of Lulu because she’d married one of The Bee Gees and she won Eurovision.

“It was great to meet her. Maybe we could team up in Moscow to sing one of her songs,” she added.

Valeriya is Russia’s ninth biggest-earning star, and counts moneybags Chelsea owner Roman Abromovich and former President Vladimir Putin as fans.

“It is obviously strange for me to have a lot of success and then start again in another country where no one knows of you,” she stated.

“But at the same time it’s quite exciting. I see it as a challenge.

“I’m having to get used to comparisons with Madonna in your country but I consider myself a very different person. I do not compare myself to anyone else,” she added. (ANI)

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber slams Simon Cowell for ‘not working hard’

London, Jan 09 (ANI): Musician Andrew Lloyd Webber has slammed ‘X Factor’ judge Simon Cowell for not working hard with his artists.

Andrew’s comments come after he put X Factor rejects Francine and Nicola Gleadall into the final six of Britain’s Eurovision entry hopefuls.

Andrew also condemned Cowell for describing the twins as having “the personality of two bananas” – and they only made it to the boot camp in his show.

“I think the public will fall in love with them. If Simon Cowell didn’t think so, that’s his problem,” The Mirror quoted Andrew, as saying.

“He doesn’t work with the artists the way I do,” Andrew added.

Andrew also criticized Cowell for whiling away time in Barbados rather than working hard.

“I can’t speak for Simon. He’s probably still sunning himself in Barbados and extending his property,” Andrew added. (ANI)
