Get used to the bench, Man U management tells Owen

London, Sep.15 (ANI): Manchester United coach Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly told striker Michael Owen to get used to life on the bench.

Manager Alex Ferguson insists Dimitar Berbatov is first choice in attack alongside Wayne Rooney.

He said: “Owen will play, just maybe not early in the season. We are trying to get a blend of Berbatov and Rooney – so Owen doesn’t come in to the equation. I explained to Owen why he has not been involved. The season has not really started. Because of the internationals we’re not really playing Saturday and Wednesday.”

According to The Sun, Owen is desperate to impress England boss Fabio Capello to win back his England place. But he has started just one United match since joining for free this summer. (ANI)

Master gene that switches on disease-fighting cells identified

London, Sep 14 (ANI): British scientists have identified the master gene, called E4bp4, that causes blood stem cells to turn into disease-fighting ‘Natural Killer’ (NK) immune cells.

The discovery, by researchers at Imperial College London, UCL and the Medical Research Council’s National Institute for Medical Research, could one day help scientists boost the body’s production of these frontline tumour-killing cells, creating new ways to treat cancer.

By ‘knocking out’ E4bp4 in a mouse model, the researchers created the world’s first animal model entirely lacking NK cells, but with all other blood cells and immune cells intact.

The breakthrough model should help solve the mystery of the role that Natural Killer cells play in autoimmune diseases, such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

According to many scientists, these diseases are a result of malfunctioning NK cells that turn on the body and attack healthy cells, which cause disease instead of fighting it.

They believe that clarifying NK cells’ role could lead to new ways of treating these conditions.

Natural Killer cells – a type of white blood cell – are a major component of the human body’s innate, quick-response immune system, providing a fast frontline defence against tumours, viruses and bacterial infections.

The gene E4bp4 is the ‘master gene’ for NK cell production, which means it is the primary driver that causes blood stem cells in the bone marrow to differentiate into NK cells.

Led by Dr Hugh Brady, the researchers are hoping to progress with a drug treatment for cancer patients which reacts with the protein expressed by their E4bp4 gene, causing their bodies to produce a higher number of NK cells than normal, to increase the chances of successfully destroying tumours.

“If increased numbers of the patient’s own blood stem cells could be coerced into differentiating into NK cells, via drug treatment, we would be able to bolster the body’s cancer-fighting force, without having to deal with the problems of donor incompatibility,” Nature quoted Brady as saying.

The researchers proved the pivotal role E4bp4 plays in NK production when they knocked the gene out in a mouse model.

Without E4bp4 the mouse produced no NK cells whatsoever but other types of blood cell were unaffected.

“Now finally, with our discovery of the NK cell master gene and subsequent creation of our mouse model, we will be able to find out if the progression of these diseases is impeded or aided by the removal of NK cells from the equation. This will solve the often-debated question of whether NK cells are always the ‘good guys’, or if in certain circumstances they cause more harm than good,” said Brady.

The study has been published in Nature Immunology. (ANI)

Costa Rica named happiest, greenest country on Earth

Melbourne, July 6 (ANI): Costa Rica has been named as the ‘happiest place to live on Earth’ in a new survey.

It has also been named the most environmentally friendly country on the planet.

The New Economics Foundation looked at 143 countries, and devised an equation that evaluates life expectancy and people’s happiness against their environmental impact.

The foundation ranks Costa Rica as the happiest, greenest country in the world, followed by Dominican Republic at the second place, reports the News.com.au

The Latin American countries have booked nine of the top 10 spots in the survey.

However, some of the major Western nations did poorly, with Britain being mentioned at 74th place, Australia at 102nd and the US at 114th.

The survey report suggests that Costa Ricans have a life expectancy of 78.5 years, and 85 per cent of the country’s residents admit that they are happy and satisfied with their lives.

Sociologist Andrea Fonseca said that Costa Rica gives its citizens the “tools” to be happy.

She added that the country’s rise to the top of the Happy Planet Index “has a lot to do with social imagination”.

Some of the critics have condemned the study for ignoring issues like political freedom, human rights, and labour rights. (ANI)

Australia must engage India more in wake of Singh’s enhanced authority

Melbourne, May 21 (ANI): There can hardly be a friend of India anywhere who does not rejoice at the electoral success of Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Cambridge economics don.

The Kevin Rudd Government must swiftly take advantage of the new situation in India, reports The Australian.

Singh’s Government will be stronger on economic reform, though it is unlikely to move at dizzying speed. But Singh has identified energy and education as the two great blocks to Indian development. The nuclear deal addresses energy, but there will be much more liberalisation in the energy sector to come. It’s also likely that foreign universities will ultimately be allowed to establish campuses in India, both of which are obvious opportunities for Australia.

Rudd had planned to go to India in January, but Singh had a heart attack. Both Rudd and Foreign Minister Stephen Smith are determined to put India in the front rank of Australia’s foreign relations. Rudd is sure to visit India soon, says the paper.

Meanwhile, Indian and US intelligence agencies have concluded that a part of the Pakistani state that lent some support to the terrorists who attacked Mumbai last November, did so for a very specific reason, internal to Pakistan.

The Pakistani military was so desperate to escape US pressure to fight the Taliban in their northwest that they wanted to provoke a limited Indian military reaction. This would have justified abandoning the fight against the Taliban and rushing troops back to the Indian border.

The relevant intelligence agencies, including our own, further conclude that a further Pakistan-originated terrorist outrage after Mumbai would have virtually forced an Indian military response of some kind, even just a strike at terrorist training facilities in Pakistan.

Only the measured, moderate, mature leadership of Singh and his senior colleagues kept India calm in the face of the Mumbai outrage.

Now that Singh’s authority is massively enhanced, the dynamics have changed. One of the few good elements in the regional geo-strategic equation that we can rely on is steadiness in Indian policy, The Australian claims.

According to the paper, Singh stands now as one of the greatest statesmen in Asian history. He is the first Indian Prime Minister to serve a full term and win re-election since 1961. He has brilliantly expanded India’s centre, marginalizing both its Left and its Right. (ANI)

UPA, NDA working overtime to cobble up required majority

New Delhi, May 15 (ANI): The suspense continues to mount in political circles on which combine-the UPA or the NDA-will be in a position to form the next government at the Centre.

Key political leaders are travessing the length and breadth of the country meeting each other to determine and convince who will join which coalition or front.

Counting of votes will take place on Saturday, and most political leaders are saying that they will confabulate and reveal their respective positions after the results emerge.

“We are receiving positive indications from various parties. We will not reveal what we are discussing or what we have discussed till the results are out. Once the results are out, the BJP Parliamentary Party will meet and take stock and then decide the way forward,” said BJP president Rajnath Singh.

“Everything is fluid,” said NCP leader Praful Patel.

Congress leaders Pranab Mukherjee, A K Antony, Ahmad Patel and Digvijay Singh were huddled in talks till late last night.

Given his good equation with CPI-M veterans Jyoti Basu and West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, Mukherjee may be given the task of opening up the lines of communication with Left parties.

A meeting between BJP president Rajnath Singh and Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh at a wedding reception last night set the political circles abuzz. The SP leader, however, dismissed media speculation of a political understanding being reached.

“People are aware that it is only Congress which can provide a stable government. All our allies are happy with us,” said Jayanthi Natarajan of Congress.

However, BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar expressed confidence that his party will emerge as the single largest with more 30 seats that the Congress. “NDA will emerge as the single largest coalition with 50 seats more than UPA,” he claimed.

“All options are open. Everything will depend on the numbers,” said Amar Singh. The SP leader said he was in touch with CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury and would be speaking to NCP leader Sharad Pawar.

The Fourth Front, comprising Lalu Yadav’s RJD, Ram Vilas Paswan’s LJP and SP have said the combine was averse to having any alliance with the BJP as also Mayawati’s BSP.

“Everybody is talking to everyone,” Patel went on to add.

JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav adopted a cautious approach. “There are some people with whom we are talking with some belief. The talks have been ongoing since yesterday night,” he said without elaborating.

“Congress does not use and throw its allies. We had a difference of opinion with RJD, LJP and the SP over the number of seats allotted to our party but they continued to be ministers and continue to be part of the UPA,” explained Natarajan.

“We shall prevent formation of a BJP-led government. This does not mean that automatically there would be a blanket support to a government led by the Congress,” CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta contended. (ANI)

Now, a home kit for men to monitor reproductive status post vasectomy

Washington, May 14 (ANI): Men, who don’t know when to stop using contraceptive methods after vasectomy, can now resort to a medical home test kit based on a protein discovered at the University of Virginia Health System, called SpermCheck Vasectomy.

The new product line could revolutionize the way men around the world monitor their reproductive status.

“The SpermCheck family of products is intended for use by men on both sides of the fertility equation – those who don’t want to father children and those who do,” said Dr. John C. Herr, inventor of SpermCheck technology who is professor of cell biology.

SpermCheck Vasectomy is based on antibodies that bind to SP-10, a protein discovered in Herr’s laboratory, and is the only FDA approved immunodiagnostic test for monitoring sperm after vasectomy.

The device looks and functions much like a home pregnancy test.

It measures SP-10, which is present at constant levels in each sperm head, and enables men to quickly and accurately monitor their post-vasectomy sterility.

Such monitoring is important because sperm can remain in the male reproductive tract for weeks or months after a vasectomy.

Thus, to avoid unexpected pregnancies, vasectomized men must practice birth control until their sperm count falls below fertility levels.

According to Herr, at-home privacy, convenience and affordability of SpermCheck Vasectomy will boost post-operative monitoring and make it easy for couples to accurately determine when contraception methods are no longer needed. (ANI)

The quiet Sainik’s first LS attempt

MUMBAI: He is the most unlikely Shiv Sainik. He is liked by Muslims, does not discriminate on the basis of religion, is soft spoken and, what is
more, firmly refuses to criticise his opponent. Sixty-three-year-old Suresh Gambhir is the Sena nominee for the Mumbai South-Central Lok Sabha seat.

A simple measure of his popularity lies in the fact that he has not lost a single election he has contested since 1978. In that year, he stood for the BMC’s Mahim seat and when he was re-elected to it in 1985 it was by the highest margin in Mumbai. He was elected from Mahim to the legislative assembly four times from 1990 onwards. This is Gambhir’s first attempt at entering Parliament.

What is the secret of his consistent success? Says Gambhir: “There is no secret. I have been in touch with my voters 24×7. I do not believe in giving letters, but personally accompany my voters, whether it be for getting a bed in a hospital or a seat in a school. Also, I have never discriminated against anyone on the basis of religion or caste. Mahim has a large number of Muslims and I share a very good equation with them.”

When the communal riots ravaged Mahim in 1992-93, Gambhir was busy getting the injured, both Hindus and Muslims, admitted to hospital. Never the one to mouth Hindutva slogans, he appears to have mastered the art of making friends. “I may not have solved all the problems. But no one can say that I did not try to help them,” he says with innate modesty. He refuses to criticise his main opponent.

Asked for his agenda, Gambhir says that he will work for the security of the metropolis. “I was among the first to rush to Mahim station when it was hit in the 11/7 blasts. I have seen death at close quarters. 26/11 should serve as a wake up call for all Mumbaikars.

“My other priority will be to provide affordable housing for the poor and lower-middle class. The redevelopment of Dharavi is another major item on my agenda. I have demanded that each hutment dweller be given flats measuring 400 square feet and those owning commercial establishments be given extra space,” Gambhir says.He also promises to take up the problem of pollution in Chembur, which is now a part of Mumbai South-Central. He said the burning of garbage needs to be tackled on a priority basis.

“Noise” from space may help reveal mass of near-Earth asteroids

Washington, April 4 (ANI): Planetary scientists are all set to turn “noise” from the data obtained by NASA/ESA LISA satellites’ mission into useful information about the mass of near-Earth asteroids.

LISA is on a mission to detect gravitational waves – a warping of the space/time continuum that scientists hope to see directly for the first time.

Slated for launch no earlier than 2018, LISA will include three satellites connected by laser beams. The distance between the satellites should change as a gravitational wave passes.

Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity predicts that gravitational waves from exploding stars or colliding black holes ripple across the universe, causing other bodies to wobble like driftwood in a motorboat’s wake.

In 2006, planetary scientists realized that Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) also would make the spacecraft wobble as they passed nearby, creating a distinct signature in the data being collected.

Pasquale Tricarico, a scientist at the Tucson-based Planetary Science Institute, expanded on that work to predict the number of asteroid encounters LISA can expect and how those encounters can be used to determine the mass of passing asteroids.

According to Tricarico, LISA can expect to see one or two known near-Earth asteroids a year, and a total of around ten during the expected mission lifetime.

When an encounter with a known asteroid shows up in the data, scientists will already know its trajectory.

“So from the signal, we can indirectly measure the asteroid’s mass because that’s the only uncertainty in the equation,” Tricarico said.

“These mass measurements are important because we only know the mass of asteroids that have been visited by spacecraft or the mass of a few binary asteroids observed from Earth,” he added.

“We always wonder about the porosity, the density, and this will give us measurements from additional asteroids,” he explained.

If a known asteroid passes one of the satellites and doesn’t leave a signature, “that allows us to put an upper limit on the mass of that asteroid,” Tricarico added.

Tricarico also has predicted the number of potential encounters with smaller, unknown NEAs.

If LISA starts detecting five asteroids a year instead of two or three, this could modify theories concerning the distribution of sizes in the NEA population. (ANI)

Now, a mathematical model to tell if true love will last

London, Mar 26 (ANI): Couples wondering if their true love is heading for a lifetime of happiness have been provided with a mathematical test to find out if they are a match made in heaven.

Although, people say there’s no simple formula for a long-lasting relationship, boffins claim to have come up with a mathematical model which determines whether or not a relationship will succeed.

The calculations of Professor James Murray, a maths expert at Oxford University, were based on a 15-minute conversation between a couple.

In the study, the participants were asked to sit opposite each other and asked to talk about a contentious issue.

Each pair was told to talk about the same topic – one which they have been at loggerheads for some time – for 15 minutes.

The research team recorded the conversation and awarded the husband and wife positive or negative points depending on what was said.

The partner who showed affection, humour or happiness as they talked was given the maximum points, while those who displayed contempt or belligerence received the minimum.

From the analyses, Prof Murray, a Fellow of The Royal Society, said contempt was deemed more destructive than disgust, sadness or anger.

He said the scores of the wife and the husband were fed into the mathematical model and plotted onto a graph. The point at which the two lines meet illustrated the marriage’s chances of success or failure.

“I am still absolutely amazed that human emotions can be put into a mathematical model and that a prediction can be made,” The Telegraph quoted him, as saying.

“What astonished me was that a discussion, sometimes highly charged and emotional, could so easily and usefully be encapsulated in what is actually a simple model of a couple’s interaction.

“It is not so much of an equation, it is trying to assess and quantify how a couple interact by giving them a scoring system.

“We take those figures and plot them on to a graph. If either the husband or the wife is consistently negative then they are going to get a divorce,” he added.

According to Murray, married couples could be divided into five groups.

“Marriages can be classified into only five general types, some of which are stable and others not. Depending on the group, some couples might as well get divorced right away,” he said.

The first category is the “validating” couple who are calm, intimate, who like to back each other up and share a companionable relationship. The second group are the “avoiders” couple who do their best to eschew confrontation and conflict.

The “volatile” couple, who are romantic and passionate but have heated arguments are a mix of stable and unstable, but generally tend to be more unhappy than not. The “hostile” category is when one partner does not want to talk about an issue and the other agrees, so there is no communication.

The “hostile-detached” couple is where one is fiery and wanting to argue, while the other one is just not interested in discussing the issue. (ANI)

Third Front can seek Congress support to form government: Karat

New Delhi, Mar 18 (ANI): Nothing remains constant in politics and equation keeps changing, CPM General Secretary Prakash Karat described his relationship with Manmohan Singh as a political one, not a personal one, and said the decision to not allow Jyoti Basu to become Prime Minister was not a historic blunder.

In 1996, the CPM had refused to let Basu take the Prime Minister’s oath at the head of a United Front government, something he later termed a “historic blunder”.

Karat in an exclusive interview to NDTV said that there is no bitterness between him and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh even though they parted ways.

Karat also said the Third Front could ask the Congress to support them to form a government.

He said: “We can do business with them and ask them to support an alternative secular formation, it’s possible- why not, I don’t rule it out. It’s not a question of untouchability.”

“We’ll do business with all parties but that business will be circumscribed by the nature of the mandate,” Karat added. (ANI)

Unbeaten England reaches first final in 16 years

Sydney, Mar.17 (ANI): England sealed a place in its first World Cup final in 16 years when it extended its unbeaten run at this tournament to five matches by defeating the West Indies by 146 runs, while New Zealand stayed on course for a final showdown with Charlotte Edwards’s side when it overpowered India by five wickets in the penultimate matches in the Super Six stage of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2009 on Tuesday.

At the Drummoyne Oval, England openers Sarah Taylor (78) and Caroline Atkins (50) featured in a 134-run first wicket partnership before Claire Taylor (65) rescued her side from a middle-order collapse as the two-time former champion reached an imposing 236-8 in 50 overs.

Off-spinner Laura Marsh then took 3-17 as the West Indies was bowled out for 90 in 38.2 overs, with Shanel Daly unable to bat due to illness.

At the North Sydney Oval, New Zealand rode on an excellent 71 by player-of-the-match Kate Pulford and a priceless 47 not out by Suzie Bates to achieve the victory target of 208 runs with five wickets and 15 balls to spare which made it the first side in the tournament to score over 200 runs in the second innings to win a match.

While England is guaranteed a place in the 22 March final after collecting maximum points, New Zealand now has six points and can set up a repeat of 1993 World Cup final at Lord’s against England if it beats Pakistan on Thursday at Drummoyne. And if it manages to do this, defending champion Australia will be knocked out of the final race and instead will be left to play in the third-fourth place-off against India on 21 March at the Bankstown Oval.

Australia’s only chance of reaching the final is if it beats England on Thursday and also hope that eighth-ranked Pakistan turns the table on New Zealand. This scenario will put both Australia and New Zealand on even points and on equal wins which will bring the net run-rate into play.

India can also come into the equation if it beats the West Indies by a convincing margin and both Australia and New Zealand lose their last matches with the net run-rate to decide which team joins England in the final. The calculations are hypothetical and highly unlikely but certainly not impossible. (ANI)

Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Luck by Chance’ to star Juhi Chawla and Farhan Akhtar

Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Luck by Chance’ to star Juhi Chawla and Farhan Akhtar The vibrant and talented Juhi Chawla, who is also known for her extraordinary performance and unique roles, has undergone a makeover. She would be seen with blonde hair to fit in the role of Minty Rolly, the producer wife of Rishi Kapoor in Zoya Akhtar’s film Luck By Chance.

Since the role required the veteran actress to do something different, she went for blonde look, a thing she has never done before.

A bubbly Juhi said, “When Zoya offered me the role, I was thrilled, even though I was told it was not a big one. I didn’t mind. It was different from the other characters I have played till now, and that was the most exciting part. Playing Minty was so much fun.”

The movie, which would release on 30th January, will finally tell the response of the public.

It should also be noted here that “Luck by Chance” is also starring the new-eye candy Farhan Akhtar, who also happens to be the brother of Zoya Akhtar. Zoya could not think of anyone else for the lead role except for her brother, since she thinks he is perfect for it.

Zoya said, “Farhan was the perfect choice for the role in ‘Luck By Chance’ because he knows the industry in and out. He is smart and bright and both of us have been working together for years.”

The ultimate pair of this brother and sister has earlier worked in several films like “Lakshya” and “Dil Chahta Hai” and both share a comfortable working equation.
