Firing on many cylinders

G.D. Raja, Managing Director, GD Foods & Beverages Pvt Ltd

The number 60, prominently written on the registration plate of the BMW 3-Series car, almost reads as ‘GD’. Sensing my inquisitive look, he said, “Yes, it’s 60, and it’s my idea,” he says, with a triumphant grin on his face. “It stands for Gunasekaran and Devaghi, my parents. All my vehicles have the same number,” says 32-year-old G.D. Raja.

Raja has a chain of businesses – commodity broking (Adventures India), instant coffee export, a chain of coffee pubs (Goodmorning Café), logistics (LRG Logistics), real estate (GD Shelters), jewellery retail (GD Gold Garden) and a play school (GD Public School).

Ask him whether he became an entrepreneur by accident or was forced upon him, he says, “No, no. It’s purely by choice.” His father, who runs a transport business in Chennai, wanted to see him as a top-level executive in a big corporate house. Despite his father’s persuasion, he chose not to take part in any campus interviews when he was doing his MBA at Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Tiruchi. “Because, I was very stubborn that I should start something on my own,” says Raja, founder CEO of the GD Group of companies.

In 2003, after he completed his MBA, he ventured into a business as planned, with an initial investment of Rs 3 lakh, which he “borrowed” from his father. He took distributorship of food products from various manufacturers.

He stocked and distributed many products from packaged atta, maida to asafoetida to provision stores from a small portion of a building in Chennai. There was an 8-10 per cent margin. As most of the products were sold on credit, and the shop owners did not pay on time, it often landed him in financial problems. “During such a crisis, my friend, Rajam, who studied with me at BIM, used to bail me out by lending money from her salary.” But, that did not go on for a long time. At one point, the situation worsened and he could not even pay the rent for the portion he had taken on lease. He quit the distribution business.

And that is when the idea of having his own brand struck him, and they (Raja and Rajam) finally narrowed down on instant coffee. It was in early 2004, when Sunrise and Bru were the dominant players in the market. When approached, Consolidated Coffee Ltd at Hyderabad readily agreed to manufacture for him. ‘Goodmorning Cafe’ was born. He positioned it as a B2B product and sold it to commercial establishments, “as this segment was not very brand conscious”.

The first month sales were Rs 8,000 but in three years, the annual turnover went up to Rs 4 crore. CCL could not meet his demand, as it had to meet its own export orders. In a tight spot again, he decided to set up his own manufacturing facility. Though many banks rejected the project because of his age and lack of collateral, thankfully, State Bank of Hyderabad agreed to extend the loan. “That was the breakthrough for us,” says Raja. In late 2011, when he was 31, he set up his instant coffee manufacturing facility at Andimadam in Ariyalur district of Tamil Nadu, with a 200-tonne-a-month capacity. After that there was no looking back.

As there were a lot of enquiries from overseas, he started exporting too. Now the unit is converted into a 100 per cent export-oriented-unit. The unit is now being expanded to manufacture 750 tonnes a month.

He extended his coffee export business by foraying into ‘coffee pubs’, under the brand Goodmorning Café. It’s a chain of five outlets, now only in Chennai.

In between, in late 2004, as he had “a lot of free time in the evenings”, he started a commodity broking firm, Adventures India. The peak business time for the Commodity Exchange is towards the evening (to coincide with the New York exchange). “I learnt that commodity market has a higher potential than the stock market, and took membership from MCX,” he explains.

He positioned his broking firm as an ‘exclusive commodity broking firm’. Due to lack of awareness, he had a tough time bringing in investors. His perseverance paid. Now Adventures India carries out transactions worth Rs 600 crore a day. “We are South India’s leading commodity broking firm with more than 200 branches across the country,” says Raja.

His logistics business too has an interesting story behind. He invited P.R. Ramasubrahmaneya Rajha, Chairman of the Ramco group, as the chief guest to inaugurate an Adventures India outlet in Rajapalayam. During their conversation, Rajha asked him to start a transport business, with a promise to award Ramco’s contracts in that region. LR Logistics was started with 30 trucks. And, now it runs 54 trucks, exclusively for Ramco.

Now his group employs a little over 300 people. “My dream is to expand the business and employ at least 1,000 people by 2015,” says Raja.

Bob Geldof slams Australia’s treatment of Aborigines

Melbourne, May 19 (ANI): Irish singer Sir Bob Geldof has slammed Australia for its treatment of Aborigines, saying that it was “economically stupid” and “absurd”.

Geldof, 58, was speaking at a breakfast for West Australian mining entrepreneur Andrew Forrest’s nation-touring GenerationOne movement, which aims to halt indigenous disparity.

He said Australia has “exiled” indigenous Australians from the nation.

“They were forced to be exiled from themselves and that must stop,” News.com.au quoted him as saying.

“You need to pull them back into themselves because you’ve acknowledged them as being.

“The spiritual core of yourselves will only be filled when this is done,” he stated.

He urged the “rich bastards” in attendance at the breakfast to contribute wholeheartedly to Forrest’s fight to end indigenous disparity, and likened indigenous affairs in Australia to situations he’d witnessed in third-world Africa.

“I said on the radio back in 1984 that to die of want in a world of surplus is not only intellectually absurd, it is morally repulsive. Well let’s add economically illiterate to that,” he said.

“You’ve removed from your society of ‘having a go’ 500 thousand of your own. That is absurd. It’s economically stupid.

“Just like those 44 million African children (given access to education from the Live Aid campaign) will be a massive driving force in the world economy, so your own Aboriginal people require to be allowed in. The access point is education,” he added. (ANI)

£2k worth Hobbit-style dome may solve Third World housing crisis

London, May 18 (ANI): A man has designed a Hobbit-style dome that he expects will be the answer to Third World housing crisis.

Jay Emery says that the house will cost just 2000 pounds each that can act as a glamorous garden office or leisure building but far more importantly, provide a groundbreaking solution to how buildings are made.

“It has hobbit-esque appeal.

“But the thing is, if you were to look at a traditional South African Zulu beehive it”s similar.

“But they”re prone to fire and need lots of maintenance while the dome home is fireprrof and we think it”s disaster resistant,” Sky news quoted entrepreneur Jay Emery as saying.

Emery, who moved to the UK from South Africa, ventured into the business first by hand-making bushman burner chimineas for his company Dingley Dell Enterprises in Worcestershire 10 years ago.

Using fire cement rather than terracotta, he moved to making African pot houses for people to dine in their gardens.

Eventually, he was given a grant to construct a similar structure near Stourport-on- Severn. Now he plans to build 30 dome homes for an AIDS orphanage in South Africa.

He”s currently competing in a competition to win 50,000 pounds to help prove his concept. (ANI)

History inverted: Indian to relaunch East India Company

LONDON: A Mumbai-born entrepreneur plans to relaunch the East India Company after strenuously acquiring shares in the firm that once ruled India.

With a $15 million investment and inputs from a range of experts, from designers and brand researchers to historians, Sanjiv Mehta plans to open the company store in Conduit Street of the main Regent Street in the heart of London next month.

Describing it as an achievement, Mehta said “I have this huge feeling of redemption, this indescribable feeling of owning a company that once owned us.”

Mehta said he travelled around the world, visiting former East India Company trading posts and museums, reading up records and meeting people who understood business of that time.

“There was a huge sense of responsibility. I did not create this brand, But I wanted to be as pioneering as the merchants who created it,” he said.

The East India Company was formed initially for pursuing trade with the East Indies, but that ended up trading mainly with the Indian subcontinent and China.

The oldest among several similarly formed European East India Companies, the firm was granted an English Royal Charter, under the name Governor and Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies by Queen Elizabeth 1 on December 1600.

“Our minister has already initiated the process. These names will be finalised soon,” a news channel quoted a top official said.

Judge rules ‘serious flight risk’ Stanford must stay in jail pending trial

London, July 1 (ANI): Texas billionaire businessman and alleged fraudster, Sir Allen Stanford, is a “serious flight risk” and must stay in jail pending trial, a judge has ruled.

The cricket entrepreneur has been charged with seven counts of wire fraud, ten counts of mail fraud and conspiracy to launder money. The billionaire financier will continue to be detained in a Houston jail until his multi-billion dollar fraud case is heard.

Stanford’s access to “an international network and financial resources” and “his familiarity with global travel” persuaded Judge David Hittner to deny him temporary freedom.

He added that the severity of the punishment he faces if convicted could also see Stanford go on the run.

The mogul could receive up to 375 years in jail if found guilty of 21 charges of multi-billion-dollar fraud, money laundering and obstruction, SKY News reports.

Stanford’s lawyer Dick DeGuerin confirmed his “disappointed” client would appeal against judge’s decision

He had argued in front of the judge that Stanford would have fled by now if that had been his intention, and the possibility was void given that “he’s broke” after his assets were seized.

“They even took his underwear,” DeGuerin told the court.

But Judge Hittner replied in writing: “Stanford is a serious flight risk. There is no condition or combination of conditions of pre-trial release that will reasonably assure his appearance as required for trial.” (ANI)

‘Frolicking’ Jordan could lose up to #3m if axed from endorsement deals

London, June 23 (ANI): Jordan faces losing up to 3 million pounds if she is dropped from a series of money-spinning endorsement deals.

Some of the former I’m A Celebrity star’s contracts were said to be under review after her recent wild antics following her split from estranged husband Peter Andre.

The 31-year-old, real name Katie Price, has been making headlines with her boozy cruises in the holiday island of Ibiza, where she has been repeatedly snapped frolicking with her hunky friends and alleged new boyfriend Anthony Lowther.

The mum-of-three was photographed behaving erratically after drunken night outs including kissing a pretty brunette, snogging Lowther and flashing her underwear.

Jordan reportedly holds contracts including a 2-million pound lingerie and a 1-million pound bed linen deal.

“Since coming out of the jungle in I’m A Celebrity, Katie has built a fantastically marketable career as Katie Price, mother of three children and a role model to young girls,” The Mirror quoted a source as saying.

“In the space of five days, there is a perception she has seriously damaged that image.

“Katie has admitted she wants to go back to being Jordan, and her behaviour since splitting from Pete has been wild to say the least. She’s gone back to her pneumatic glamour model roots, getting drunk and posing erotically.

“From being a respected self-made entrepreneur, some people – young women and mothers in particular – have turned against her.

“Some things being written and said are fairly vitriolic – and of course companies do not want to be associated with someone the public dislike. Crucially, they invested in Katie Price, not Jordan.

“While she will obviously continue with her own brand products, others are in serious jeopardy,” the source added.

However, a spokesman for the model insisted her deals were secure, saying: “Katie is extremely dedicated to her business and developing it further. Over the past few weeks the phone has been ringing constantly with some new and exciting offers both in the UK and internationally.”

He added: “We’re also confident her lingerie will continue as always.” (ANI)

The US Securities and Exchange Commission has previously charged Standford in a separate civil case.

Regulators in the US claim he and his firms lied to investors about their money being safe, when it was actually funding a so-called Ponzi scheme.

He made huge investments in sport and transformed cricket in the West Indies with his financial input.

Last summer, he invited England’s top cricketers to play in a lucrative game in Antigua, where the winning team members scooped one million dollar each.

But the England and Wales Cricket Board severed all connections with him after he was charged with the multi-billion-dollar fraud. (ANI)
