The ear-shattering secret weapon ‘Vuvuzela’ that can turn WC soccer fans deaf

Cape Town, June 4(ANI): Football fans travelling to the World Cup in South Africa are being warned to be prepared for a secret horn called ‘vuvuzela’, which is capable of creating an ear-shattering experience at the stadiums.

South African fans will be using ‘vuvuzela’ to inspire their players.

“The vuvuzela can reach 131 decibels, which is almost as loud as a gunshot,” The Sky News quoted Professor De Wet Swanpol, of Pretoria University, as saying.

“We have found that football fans exposed to the noise during just one game suffer some hearing loss,” he added.

The plastic instrument has made the officials advise visiting fans from all nations to wear earplugs to protect themselves.

According to reports, there were also calls for the vuvuzela to be banned during the World Cup, although FIFA denied receiving any official complaints.

Former England manager and current Thailand coach, Bryan Robson, confirmed that even players had faced problems due to the instrument, and said he was stunned by the noise at a recent friendly in South Africa.

“The atmosphere was fantastic, but it was too loud to communicate with my players,” Robson said. (ANI)

Walcott admits he did not deserve to be part of 2006 Germany WC England squad

London, May 26(ANI): England striker Theo Walcott has admitted that he did not deserve his place in the Germany World Cup squad four years ago, but now he does.

Former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson had stunned fans when he named Walcott in his 23-man squad for the 2006 finals. At the time, Walcott was just 17 and had never played in a Premier League clash.

However, the 21-year-old reckons that he has since brushed aside his baby-faced image and has earned his place in the team.

“It feels so much different to last time. I had not played in the Premier League and did not deserve to go to Germany, I knew that. I am now playing in the Premier League and the World Cup qualifiers and am doing quite well,” The Sun quoted Walcott, as saying.

“I feel I am there by rights and, fingers crossed, I will be on that plane. There are a lot of world-class players on the right-hand side for England and it is a great competition to be a part of,” he added.

Walcott further said that he was satisfied with his performance in Monday’s friendly 3-1 victory over Mexico, and insisted that the key is to keep the momentum going.

“Now it is vital that I focus on the training camp in Austria leading up to the Japan game and not look too far ahead, as there is still a lot of work to do,” he added. (ANI)

Beckham will be England’s cheerleader

London, May 24 (IANS) David Beckham will not be an apprentice to manager Fabio Capello, but his role will be that of a cheerleader on the England bench at the football World Cup being held in South Africa June 11-July 11.

Capello made it clear that Beckham, who has been ruled out of the World Cup after rupturing his Achilles tendon, will not be a coaching staff.

‘He is not coaching staff, absolutely not,’ the England manager was quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.

Capello was almost dismissive when mention was made that Beckham could contribute to tactical plans.

‘He will stay with us during the World Cup, but no coaching. You have to respect the coaches. He will not be like a coach. We have different projects for him, he is an ambassador for the 2018 World Cup and can go one or two times around South Africa. But it is important that David stays with us. He is one of the really important players who played with us. He is dedicated,’ Capello said.

Beckham’s role will now revolve around helping team spirit on a goodwill safari and, in dressing-room parlance, working as BBC – Balls, Bibs and Cones.

FIFA bars Capello from players’ session with referee

London, May 23 (IANS) England manager Fabio Capello received a set-back after FIFA prevented him from arranging a special session between his players and referee Howard Webb ahead of the World Cup.

The Daily Telegraph reported that the England manager wanted Webb to go through the new rules and regulations with his players at their training camp, but the world governing body’s rules prevented it.

England’s players will now be briefed by an official FIFA delegate who will give them a presentation on rule changes, the most high-profile of which is that players will now be cautioned for feinting in the run-up while taking a penalty.

FIFA has strict rules on officials, after its integrity unit identified referees as the ‘weak link’ in the defence against match-fixing. But there was no question about the integrity of Webb or the motivation of the England camp in trying to set up the meeting.

According to reports, referees will be kept in isolation during the competition and security guards will be posted outside referees’ hotels and no direct outside calls will be allowed to their rooms.

Capello to experiment against Mexico

Fabio Capello will rest key players and experiment with England’s more marginal World Cup hopefuls in Monday’s friendly against fellow finalists Mexico at Wembley.

The Italian, whose squad have been at an altitude training camp in Austria, said his four Chelsea players and Portsmouth goalkeeper David James would definitely not play in England’s last home game before the World Cup in South Africa.

“I think absolutely these five players don’t play,” the England manager told reporters on Sunday.

Chelsea played Portsmouth in the FA Cup final at Wembley last weekend.

With John Terry, Frank Lampard, Ashley and Joe Cole ruled out, and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry recovering from an ankle injury, the way is open for the likes of Adam Johnson, Michael Dawson, Ledley King and Jamie Carragher to remind the manager of their talents.

“Some players will be important for me to know their attitude on the pitch,” said Capello. “I will experiment against Mexico.”

That could mean Wayne Rooney being used as a lone striker or a switch to a 3-5-2 system.

Capello said he more or less knew the 23 players he will take to South Africa but there was still room for late changes.

He added that he had no concerns about the state of the playing surface at Wembley.

England also have a friendly against Japan in Graz, Austria on May 30 before the final 23-man squad is selected.

Freak training ground mishap is Capello’s biggest World Cup fear

London, May 21 (ANI): England boss Fabio Capello has admitted that his biggest fear over the next two weeks is a freak training ground accident claiming a victim of one of his key players.

According to The Mirror, the Italian coach had a scare last week when John Terry initially feared he had broken his right foot preparing for the FA Cup final, while Matthew Upson sustained a nasty-looking gash above his eye in a collision with Jermain Defoe on Wednesday.

Fortunately, neither injury was serious, but Capello is aware he is a hostage to fortune between now and the end of the tournament.

“For me, the World Cup is a really big challenge. I think England are one of the best teams in the world and we can win against anyone. My approach to the World Cup is relaxed now. I have to study the other countries we will be playing against and hope that everything we are preparing will be ready for the tournament,” Capello was quoted, as saying.

He added: “As England manager, I can do a lot of in-depth preparation. But then, we could get an injury to an important player, and everything I have prepared is for nothing! (ANI)

Rooney perfect role model for England team: Capello

London, May 21(ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has hailed striker Wayne Rooney as the perfect role model for the Three Lions team.

Capello also believes that it is Rooney’s constant desire to improve his skills that is supporting the striker’s quest to be recognized as one of the world’s best players.

“Wayne Rooney is one of the best talents I have ever coached. He’s like Raul in that he is a very important player and a big talent. Every time Rooney trains he wants to stay on the training pitch for as long as possible,” The Daily Express quoted Capello, as saying.

“It is really important the other players see that Rooney, one of the best players in the world, wants to stay on the pitch and wants to continue to learn,” he added.

Rooney, the Footballer of the Year, has been training freely without feeling the groin strain which troubled him towards the end of the season at Manchester United. (ANI)

Rooney looks very tired, drained: Capello

London, May 12 (ANI): With 2010 football World Cup finals being less than four weeks away, England boss Fabio Capello has said that he has inherited a shattered and drained Wayne Rooney.

England’s chances of winning the World Cup rest on Rooney’s performance and in the last few weeks, the 24-year-old striker has fought to play despite knee, ankle and groin injuries.

Capello said: “He has played a lot of games this season. At the end of it he looked very tired.”

The Italian believes Rooney probably needed more rest after injuring an ankle against Bayern Munich and returning to England on crutches.

Rooney was back for the return leg of the Champions League quarterfinal a week later but groin problems followed, the Daily Express reports.

“After the ankle injury, the balance of his body was not the same, so it is easy to get injured,” Capello said.

Now Capello believes Rooney must rest and recuperate in order to fire on all cylinders in England’s opening World Cup game against the USA on June 12.

The England manager insisted: “I think Rooney will be fit in a short time. I hope so because he is a very important player for us.”

Capello and his staff will monitor Rooney closely in the Austrian Alps and he could be rested or used sparingly in the two warm-up games. England’s head coach is hoping the camp will recapture the spirit, which helped the team qualify for South Africa so emphatically. (ANI)

England not reaching World Cup final would be a personal failure: Capello

London, May 14 (ANI): Coach Fabio Capello has said that if England does not make the FIFA World Cup final in South Africa, he would see it as his personal failure.

Reflecting on the highs and lows of his two-and-half years as England manager, Capello told the Italian newspaper La Stampa in an interview that when he took over, he inherited a group of players who were “switched off” and “scared”.

But now, he believed his remedial work has been so successful, that it would be a personal failure if they do not reach the World Cup final.

“When I first arrived here, I saw that the players were tired, afraid, without any real sense of belonging. But by changing their psychology, by talking a lot, imposing rules and putting pride back into the shirt, we have rebuilt the team. It has been amazing. I shook the bolts, made us serious and the group has become concrete,” The Guardian quoted him, as saying.

Capello described Chelsea skipper John Terry as his side”s “true leader” and said that he hoped England”s players would leave any contract or transfer negotiations until after the World Cup.

He said that he expected Terry, who was sacked as England captain following allegations about the his private life, to play a crucial role.

“Terry is a true leader, one of those players who always makes a difference. I had no choice [to take the captaincy away], he knows that, to me, values come first,” Capello said.

“My other leaders are Rooney, Ferdinand, Lampard and Gerrard. I need them all on my side,” he added. (ANI)

Terry shrugs off injury fears, to play in Saturday’s FA Cup final

London, May 13 (ANI): Chelsea skipper John Terry, hurt his right foot tackling Daniel Sturridge in training, but is hoping to play in Saturday’s FA Cup final after giving England manager Fabio Capello a World Cup scare.

Terry’s injury raised fears that England’s ‘curse of the metatarsal’ has struck again. He went to hospital wearing a protective boot but scans revealed no major problem.

Gary Neville, David Beckham, Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney all suffered broken metatarsals in the build-up to previous World Cups. So it was relief all round when Terry’s scan proved negative.

“I took a slight knock but with such an important match on Saturday the right course of action was to put a protective boot on.

“The scan has shown there is no break. I’m hoping to train tomorrow if not Friday and, of course, play in the FA Cup final,” The Sun quoted Terry, as saying.

The slight injury had been a worry for both Carlo Ancelotti and Capello, who announced his initial 30-man World Cup squad on Tuesday.

Losing Terry would have been a major blow for both coaches. (ANI)

Capello warns England players not to seek transfers during World Cup

London, Mar 13 (ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has warned his players not to arrange transfers during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Capello warned that if any of his squad members is caught negotiating moves to other clubs it will distract England’s attempts to win the tournament.

Ironically, Capello was criticised for taking part in a commercial venture during the competition, The Sun reports.

It would have caused problems, as it involved the England boss rating his own players for financial gain. But that was given up under pressure from the Football Association.

He said: “I hope the players do not change their team or have negotiations. It disturbs the players all the time.”

David James, Joe Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Matthew Upson and Emile Heskey are players who could be on the move this summer. (ANI)

Capello defers plans to rate England players as part of an online business venture

London, May 12 (ANI): The Football Association (FA) has forced England manager Fabio Capello into postponing plans to rate his players as part of an online business venture.

The development came as Capello named the 30 players who will depart for a pre-tournament training camp in Austria in a week”s time.

The Italian refused to answer questions on the controversial Capello Index ratings scheme.

The Sun quoted him, as saying: “I think this, for me, is a press conference about these players. I read what you wrote. I prefer not to comment. I know what you have to do. We decided what we have to do. That”s it, finished, from me.”

FA director of communications Adrian Bevington was forced to intervene when it was pointed out that postponing the scheme was only delaying the potential clash of interest to a future date.

Bevington said: “We are committed to Fabio Capello after the World Cup.

“We had to remove any controversy about the World Cup. We”ve done that for a few months,” he added. (ANI)

McClaren on brink of becoming Dutch master with Twente

Steve McClaren stands on the brink of completing his rehabilitation after being sacked as England manager in 2007, with his Twente Enschede one win away from their maiden Dutch championship.

League leaders Twente travel to NAC Breda on Sunday in their final game with 83 points, one ahead of Ajax Amsterdam whose goal difference of 83 is far superior. Ajax, champions 29 times, visit NEC Nijmegen.

For McClaren, who turns 49 on Monday, the Dutch title would be the highlight of his club career as a manager after winning the 2004 English League Cup with Middlesbrough and reaching the UEFA Cup final with the same club two years later.

After failing to qualify England for the Euro 2008 finals, McClaren was derided by the media but he has found joy in football again with Twente.

“That period bothered my family more than me, but we managed. For me, in the long term it made me a better manager,” McClaren told the Dutch daily newspaper TC Tubantia.

“You learn from things that go wrong and ‘good times’ don’t make you much wiser.”

FOOTBALL CULTURE

All eyes in Netherlands were on McClaren when he joined Twente in 2008 and the former Derby County player has learned a lot in the past two seasons.

“I learned to be patient, while I am not a patient man,” he said.

“When you play a good defence in the Dutch league, you win. For me that is sufficient but I know that the football culture over here is different.”

“But I didn’t want to behave like a bull in a china store.”

Ajax’s Martin Jol is the only coach who can thwart McClaren’s early birthday present. He too has a history in England as player and coach.

Jol played in the early 1980s for West Bromwich Albion and Coventry City and managed Tottenham Hotspur from 2004 until he was sacked in October 2007, one month before the FA terminated McClaren’s England contract.

Dutchman Jol joined Ajax in July 2009 and after a struggling start he turned the team into a scoring machine that has hit the net 102 times in 33 league matches. The attack is backed up by a solid defence which has conceded only 19 goals.

“That fast changeover became our basic principle,” Jol told the weekly magazine Voetbal International.

“We polished it and made it our second nature. Normally a fast changeover is the main weapon of a team that prefers the counter attack.

“But when you score 147 goals in 49 official matches, you can’t say that about us. We just want to impose our way of playing football on the opponent.”

Capello can take England to World Cup glory without Rooney: Nistelrooy

London, Apr 28(ANI): Former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy reckons that England manager Fabio Capello can guide the Three Lions to World Cup glory despite Wayne Rooney’s absence.

“There is no one better in England than Wayne in his position. Wayne is a massive influence for England and can make the difference between the quarter-finals and scoring a goal and the semis,” The Sun quoted Nistelrooy, as saying.

“But if for one reason or another he can’t play, you know that Fabio Capello will find a way,” he added.

The 33-year-old, who had played under Capello at Real Madrid, believes Capello is one of the best managers in the world and he will prove his worth in England as well.

“I was so disappointed when he left. I told him that. I felt there was so much more in there for us if he had stayed. I really had that sensation and that”s what he has proven with England as well,” Nistelrooy said.

“I spoke to some of the English lads before he got to work and I told them, ‘He is going to turn it around, he is going to be unbelievable for England’. That’s what he does. He’s a successful manager and he achieves things,” he added. (ANI)

Rooney should play up front alone in World Cup: Lineker

London, Apr 24(ANI): Former England footballer Gary Lineker believes that striker Wayne Rooney should play up front alone in this summer’s World Cup.

Rooney has hit 34 goals playing as a lone striker for his club Manchester United this season, and Lineker wants England manager Fabio Capello to use him in a similar role during the tournament in South Africa.

“Wayne’s been brilliant in that role for United. He has played with Emile Heskey and Capello might consider Peter Crouch or Jermain Defoe. But the alternative is to play Wayne like he does for United with Gerrard or Joe Cole,” The Sun quoted Lineker, as saying.

“I fancy using Gerrard with him because that gives him licence to do what he wants and he’s brilliant when on song,” he added.

The 49-year-old further reckons South Africa could prove the stage where Rooney could establish himself as one of greatest players to represent England.

“I was not in the same league as Rooney. He is a much better footballer than I ever was,” Lineker said.

“I was a goalscorer. He is a goalscorer and more. A wonderful talented all-round footballer. I would have loved to have played with him,” he added. (ANI)

Capello may take over reins of Real Madrid after World Cup

London, Apr 17 (ANI): England boss Fabio Capello has not ruled out the option of again coaching the Real Madrid side after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Real Madrid wants the England manager to take over for a third time.

“What happens after the World Cup finals? Who knows? Anything can happen in football.

“Fabio is aware of the story but he is concentrating only on the World Cup finals and his work with England,” The Sun quoted a source close to Capello, as saying.

“He has worked hard for two years to get the national team to this stage and nothing will distract him from the goal of winning the World Cup.

“Real can make all the noises they like but he will not listen while his work with England is ongoing,” the source added.

Capello’s contract with England team runs until 2012, but there is a clause allowing him to walk away this summer if he wants.

The Italian coach won two La Liga titles with Real and is seen as the right man to take over from Manuel Pellegrini.

However, he was fired by Real Madrid in June 2007, after leading them to their first title since 2003. (ANI)

Sven’s ‘right time’ arrival to help Ivory Coast ‘win big’ in WC: Drogba

London, Mar 31(ANI): Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has welcomed the appointment of former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson as the Ivory Coast coach and predicted he can help them “win big” at this summer’s World Cup in South Africa.

Ivory Coast are in the toughest pool after having been drawn in Group G with Brazil, Portugal and North Korea, but Drogba believes that Eriksson can help his team make an impact when the tournament gets under way in June.

“There is no doubt Sven will succeed. This is someone who knows the game inside-out,” The Daily Express quoted Drogba, as saying.

“I have every belief in his ability to take us far. With the little I saw of him while he was in England and what I have heard, read and watched, I think Sven has come at the right time,” he added.

The 32-year-old further said that all his national team-mates were enthusiastic about the appointment of a new coach.

“For weeks and months we have been pondering over going to the World Cup without a coach, but what we feared most has taken a different twist. Now I don’t have to wake up every morning and think about the future of my team without a coach,” Drogba said.

“We are going to South Africa to win big. This is not something I am saying alone. It is the general feeling when you talk to the boys in our team,” he added.

Eriksson, a Swede who arrives in Ivory Coast after helping Mexico to the World Cup finals, replaces Vahid Halilhodzic, who only lost one competitive match in two years – the one that cost him his job, against Algeria in the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations in January. (ANI)

UPDATE 1-Soccer-Eriksson to coach Ivory Coast at World Cup

* Eriksson named Ivory Coast coach

* Ivory Coast turn to former England and Mexico coach (adds details)

DAKAR, March 28 (Reuters) – Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has been appointed Ivory Coast coach for this year’s World Cup finals, the Ivory Coast Federation (FIF) said in a statement on its website (www.fif-ci.com) on Sunday.

The FIF said it had considered several candidates since Bosnian Vahid Halilhodzic was sacked in February after failing to lead the team to the African Nations Cup semi-finals.

“The executive committee analysed the profile of several candidates before choosing Sven-Goran Eriksson”, FIF said (www.fif-ci.com).

“His mission will be to guide our team during the World Cup and to make sure it fares honourably, which will be difficult in a competition featuring the world’s best 32 sides.”

Ivory Coast have been drawn in World Cup Group G along with Brazil, Portugal and North Korea.

The 62-year-old Eriksson managed clubs in his native Sweden, Portugal and Italy before coaching the England national team from 2001-2006.

He joined Premier League Manchester City in 2007 and had an unsuccessful spell in charge of Mexico from 2008-09.

He was appointed director of football at English League Two (fourth division) club Notts County last year but stepped down in February.

Beckham may be decisive factor to swing 2018 World Cup bid in England’s favour

London, Mar 23 (ANI): Ace midfielder David Beckham will play an important role in England winning the bid to host the 2018 World Cup, says Danny Jordaan, the head of this year’s tournament.

Beckham’s presence in South Africa this summer could prove a decisive factor for England even though he has been ruled out from playing through injury.

The chief executive of South Africa 2010 said he expected Beckham to accept England manager Fabio Capello’s offer to travel with the squad for the World Cup.

“I think David Beckham will still come. There is already an indication that he will be part of the [backroom] team and also England is making a bid for 2018 and I’m sure that the bid team will use him during the World Cup. He’s an important factor,” The Telegraph quoted Jordaan, as saying.

“We saw when he went into Khayelitsha [the Cape Town township] for the draw in December, the excitement of the youngsters because he is an important figure in football. I think England’s 2018 committee understand he is a major factor in their bid and if he’s not able to play then he will have more time available to help the bid process.”

Beckham is already a bid ambassador for 2018 and Jordaan added that he felt England had a “realistic” chance of being successful.

With just 80 days to go now, Jordaan conceded that there would be fewer fans — around 100,000 fewer — attending than as originally estimated.

However, he dismissed claims that security fears and the lack of infrastructure — adequate transport links and accommodation — had led to fans’ considering missing the event. (ANI)

Capello wants injured Beckham to join England squad

London, Mar 19 (ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has confirmed that injured David Beckham has been invited to the World Cup.

Beckham, 34, was ruled out of the finals after snapping an Achilles tendon injury while playing for AC Milan last Sunday.

England still wanted their former skipper to join the camp, but Beckham has still to decide whether to take up the offer.

“We have already asked David to come to South Africa,” The Sun quoted Capello, as saying.

“It could well be he is with us at the World Cup. It totally depends on him,” he said.

Capello also reminded Wayne Bridge that the door is still open, after the Manchester City star ruled himself out of contention following John Terry’s affair with his ex-partner.

The Italian said: “There is still time for Wayne but the whole issue remains very heated and recent.” (ANI)
