‘Beasted’ Broad backs ‘fearless’ England for Ashes, World Cup glory

London, June 11(ANI): England fast bowler Stuart Broad has said that he spent his time out of the national team on working on his fitness, and announced that he is now prepared for the Ashes and the World Cup.

Broad, who was dropped for the two-Test series against Bangladesh, was named in the 13-man ODI squad to play England in a five-match series.

“I’ve spent the last few weeks at Loughborough getting a serious beasting in the gym — it’s been knackering, but I feel stronger and have put on about a kilogram of muscle. This isn’t a short-term thing, this is so I am still going strong by the end of the Ashes in January and through to the World Cup,” The Sun quoted Broad, as saying.

“By being dropped for that reason, I at least have the confidence that I”m in the long-term plans,” he added.

The 23-year-old said that he was unhappy with the selectors’ decision to drop him for the Bangladesh Test series.

“It was a hard phone call to take when the selectors told me. They gave their reasons and were adamant it wasn”t form. So if I”m taking wickets during an Ashes win in Australia and the World Cup, it will have been worth it,” Broad said.

He further insisted that the current England one-day side is different from the one that lost 6-1 to Australia last summer.

“These five games against Australia this summer are important — it”s crucial we continue the momentum we”ve built up in one-day cricket. Now we back ourselves and each other to play fearless cricket. We look a different team and that”s why we won the World Twenty20,” Broad said.

“We want to keep beating Australia. We have the Ashes and won that Twenty20 final — it”s hugely important we keep getting these little things over them,” he added. (ANI)

Rooney’s musical pillow to help him ‘dream’ of firing England to WC glory

London, June 4(ANI): England striker Wayne Rooney has been provided with a pillow that plays his favourite songs after he complained of struggling to sleep without background noise.

The special Sound Asleep Pillows costs 20 pounds and contains tiny speakers, which can be rigged up to a radio or iPod, allowing the user to drift off while listening to their favourite tunes.

“We sent Wayne one after hearing about his problem. A lot of our customers tell us it really helps, As massive football fans at Sound Asleep, we’ll do absolutely anything we can to get him a good night’s sleep,” The Daily Star quoted Jamie Moryoussef, Sound Asleep Pillows boss, as saying.

“After Wayne was snapped getting on the plane with the pillow under his arm, we’re now expecting a huge increase in demand and we are very happy with the unexpected side-effect,” he added. (ANI)

Cricket umpire ‘headbutts’ player in England over ‘disputed’ decision!

London, May 26(ANI): A cricket match between Oswestry CC and Whitchurch CC in England descended into chaos when an umpire allegedly headbutted a player during an argument.

According to reports, the umpire gave a batsman “not out” and had a heated row with a fielder, who was convinced that the official had made a mistake.

Later, things turned ugly as players from both the sides piled into each other.

“I couldn’t believe what was going on. I have never seen anything like that on a cricket pitch in my life,” The Mirror quoted one of the players, as saying.

The club game reportedly had no neutral umpires so was being officiated by players from the batting side.

The situation only got under control only when local police intervened to part the warring teams.

The game was abandoned. (ANI)

Walcott admits he did not deserve to be part of 2006 Germany WC England squad

London, May 26(ANI): England striker Theo Walcott has admitted that he did not deserve his place in the Germany World Cup squad four years ago, but now he does.

Former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson had stunned fans when he named Walcott in his 23-man squad for the 2006 finals. At the time, Walcott was just 17 and had never played in a Premier League clash.

However, the 21-year-old reckons that he has since brushed aside his baby-faced image and has earned his place in the team.

“It feels so much different to last time. I had not played in the Premier League and did not deserve to go to Germany, I knew that. I am now playing in the Premier League and the World Cup qualifiers and am doing quite well,” The Sun quoted Walcott, as saying.

“I feel I am there by rights and, fingers crossed, I will be on that plane. There are a lot of world-class players on the right-hand side for England and it is a great competition to be a part of,” he added.

Walcott further said that he was satisfied with his performance in Monday’s friendly 3-1 victory over Mexico, and insisted that the key is to keep the momentum going.

“Now it is vital that I focus on the training camp in Austria leading up to the Japan game and not look too far ahead, as there is still a lot of work to do,” he added. (ANI)

Rooney perfect role model for England team: Capello

London, May 21(ANI): England manager Fabio Capello has hailed striker Wayne Rooney as the perfect role model for the Three Lions team.

Capello also believes that it is Rooney’s constant desire to improve his skills that is supporting the striker’s quest to be recognized as one of the world’s best players.

“Wayne Rooney is one of the best talents I have ever coached. He’s like Raul in that he is a very important player and a big talent. Every time Rooney trains he wants to stay on the training pitch for as long as possible,” The Daily Express quoted Capello, as saying.

“It is really important the other players see that Rooney, one of the best players in the world, wants to stay on the pitch and wants to continue to learn,” he added.

Rooney, the Footballer of the Year, has been training freely without feeling the groin strain which troubled him towards the end of the season at Manchester United. (ANI)

No intention of playing for England after World Cup: Carragher

London, May 20 (ANI): Liverpool veteran Jamie Carragher, who is only making a World Cup comeback because England needs him, has no intention of carrying on with the team after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Carragher, 32, who quit England three years ago, said it will be South Africa and out again and that he only agreed to take part because of injuries.

Relaxing at England’s training camp high in the Austrian mountains, Carragher realised that his time as a player was fast running out, The Sun reports.

“I’ve been playing football since I was five years of age and in another five years I’ll probably never kick a football for the rest of my life.

“This is the chance to play at the highest level again plus, equally important, to work with this manager. Over the past 10 years Mr Capello has been the stand-out manager in world football,” The Sun quoted Carragher, as saying.

Carragher retired as an international because he was fed-up playing all over the globe as a member of the squad. It was time to concentrate on Liverpool.

He is again in the same position as he was at the last World Cup, behind John Terry and Rio Ferdinand for the central defensive positions and a reserve right back.

Carragher’s reincarnation is all the more surprising because he wrote in his autobiography how Liverpool was more important to him than England, The Sun reports.

He also told how his missed penalty in the 2006 World Cup quarter-final shootout against Portugal did not matter in the same way it would had he missed for his club.

“The stuff I mentioned in my book wasn’t so much a slight on England, it was more that Liverpool means that much to me. But I couldn’t complain if there wasn’t a great reaction against Mexico at Wembley on Monday,” he said. (ANI)

Collingwood hopes T20 victory will spur England to dominate world cricket

London, May 19 (ANI): England’s Twenty20 winning skipper Paul Collingwood is adamant that the team must use their victory as a springboard to dominate world cricket.

Collingwood and his teammates returned to London on Tuesday still basking in the glory of beating Australia in Twenty20 final in Barbados, and says he hopes that the sort of attacking cricket that England played in the Caribbean can be equally incorporated into their Test and 50-over play.

“The brand of cricket that we’ve played over the last few weeks has been fantastic. The confidence, the self-belief that we showed on the big occasion on Sunday was pleasing,” The Independent quoted Collingwood, as saying.

“It’s a brand of cricket that we’re going to keep trying to improve. We’ve got to adapt it to different conditions – we’ve got a 50-over World Cup coming up next year in the sub-continent.

“I’m pretty certain that Strauss and Flower will want us to continue with that same type of cricket and I’m sure if we go out with that same mentality we’re going to scare a lot of sides in the way that we play,” he said.

The ICC T20 World Cup is the first global trophy that England had ever won and Collingwood is determined to ensure the likes of Craig Kieswetter, Eoin Morgan, and Kevin Pietersen build on that success in a busy 12 months ahead.

England now face Bangladesh and Pakistan, then travel to Australia to defend the Ashes before taking part in the next international tournament on the ICC schedule – the 50-over World Cup in February.

“The one thing we want to do is become better and better and if you stop and be happy with what you achieved then you don”t move anywhere,” Collingwood said.

“I think if you look at the great sides of the last 20 years, like Australia for example, they have gone and experienced these World Cup wins time and time again and that’s where we have to get to as a cricket team.

“The players are desperate to continue this kind of form and this brand of cricket and hopefully that will take us on to win a lot of silverware in the future,” Collingwood said. (ANI)

Swann backs England to win football World Cup

London, May 18 (ANI): Spinner Graeme Swann is sure that England can make it two World Cup wins by clinching the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He backed the England footballers to follow the cricketers and make it a double glory for the country inside three months, The Sun reports.

Swann was the Bowler of the Tournament in England’s World Twenty20 triumph.

“Winning a World Cup is something I can recommend. It is a great feeling. The world’s biggest sporting tournament is coming up in a couple of weeks and I feel England can go all the way,” he said.

“It sounds a bit cheesy to say ‘We’ve shown you how to do it’. But I sincerely hope they do. The country will go crazy. I can”t wait for kick-off,” Swann said.

“I genuinely believed when we came to the Caribbean that we were going to win the tournament here. And I have the same feeling about the football. I reckon they are going to do it,” he added. (ANI)

Lampard determined to be England”s nominated penalty taker

London, May 18 (ANI): Ace midfielder Frank Lampard has insisted he would not shy away from taking spot-kicks during the World Cup finals in South Africa this summer and is determined to be England”s nominated penalty taker.

“Frank Lampard has promised he can beat England”s World Cup penalty curse. England fans would have been left fearing the worst at the sight of the Chelsea star missing a penalty in the FA Cup final at Wembley,” reports Mirror.

“I have missed penalties for England, I have missed penalties for Chelsea and it comes with the territory. But it would not put me off,” said Lampard.

“I am big enough to stand up. I missed [in the final] and it will play on my mind a little, but it will be completely overshadowed by the fact that we won the game and won the Double,” he added.

“It”s quite good for me too because that kind of thing makes me address it and look at it and when I go away with England I will work on that kind of stuff. Sometimes you need a little reminder of what you have got to do,” claimed Lampard.

Despite Lampard missing two penalties for his club this season, he still has an exceptional record from the penalty spot for club and country.

“England, World Cups and penalties do not go well together as Lampard will remember from seeing his spot-kick saved in the shoot-out with Portugal in the 2006 quarter-final defeat. He has not missed for England since being given penalty duties after the last World Cup, scoring four out of four,” reports Mirror.

The midfielder has managed a season”s best tally of 26 goals in 50 games for Chelsea this term and the two missed penalties are unlikely to play on his mind too much.

“It was a disappointing penalty at Wembley to say the least. I actually changed my mind in the run-up, which is a bit of a sin. Once you do that, you are probably going to miss and I did that,” admitted Lampard. (ANI)

Winning Ashes Down Under will be the icing on England”s cake: Swann

London, May 18 (ANI): Beating Australia is always special, says England off-spinner Graeme Swann in an article for The Sun.

“Every time we beat them, our confidence grows that we can do it again and again,” Swann says.

“There is only one thing which could top the two incredible, emotional highs we have had in the past nine months. And, that is retaining The Ashes this winter in the Aussies” own backyard,” he adds.

“Winning the little urn last August and beating Australia in Sunday”s World Twenty20 final are the greatest moments of my career. To have experienced two feelings like that in less than a year is unbelievable. Now, we are all hungry for a third when we travel Down Under in November,” he says.

Describing the huge high the team felt after securing the title, the off-spinner said: “I have never moved so fast in my life. I am not the quickest across the ground, but I had smoke coming from my heels as we charged out to the middle. We chased Colly until we caught him and then were jumping up and down in a huddle and screaming like five-year-olds. You get punched and elbowed and everything but you do not care. Brilliant stuff.”

“The champagne was spraying in the dressing room and Jimmy Anderson poured a whole bottle down my back. Then we settled down for an hour or two, had a few beers, enjoyed each other”s company and contemplated what had just happened. It was a phenomenal feeling and very similar to The Oval last August,” he adds.

He makes a pointed distinction between the Ashes victory and the World Twenty20 win.

“It was not quite the same, because that was the result of a whole summer”s work, a release after all the ups and downs of the series. This was more a feeling of disbelief, the fact we had beaten the best team in the world with three overs to spare. That is a thumping in Twenty20,” he says.

He also said that he the England batters perform from the physio”s room.

“I am very superstitious and always sit there in Barbados. I have my lucky spot and I never left it,” Swann says.

“The atmosphere for the final was sensational. We were 5,000 miles from home but the ground was awash with flags of St George and the noise was deafening. It got everybody”s goose bumps up,” he concludes. (ANI)

Next three weeks crucial for deciding England’s World Cup fate: Gerrard

London, May 16 (ANI): England midfielder Steven Gerrard believes that the next three weeks will be crucial for deciding the team’s World Cup fate

England will fly out on Monday for their pre-tournament training camp in the Austrian Alps and Gerrard said it is a crucial time for coach Fabio Capello.

Gerrard said: “The team are winning and confidence is high, but I still think we have some improving and some learning to do if we are to go all the way in South Africa.”

“We came through qualification really well, and I believe that the key for us will be the time between meeting up in Austria and playing our first World Cup game against the USA,” the Daily Express quoted him, as saying.

“During that time we will be living together and training together, maybe sometimes twice a day, and we can learn a lot in that period.

“Hopefully by the time the first game comes along every individual in the team will be well drilled and will know what we need to do to get out of the group. That’s the first challenge,” he added. (ANI)

Capello vows to stay with England team until 2012

London, May 16 (ANI): Football coach Fabio Capello has committed his future to England team, whatever may be the result in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, as he is contracted to continue in his present job until 2012.

Capello contracted to stay as manager until the end of the 2012 European Championship, but an escape clause in his six million pounds-a-year contract allowed him a brief period to explore other offers in the aftermath of the World Cup, The Times reports.

The clause has been removed at Capello’s instigation in a deal brokered by Lord Triesman, chairman of the FA, and Sir David Richards.

“I’m happy here. I like this job I like this country. My future is tomorrow, and tomorrow is the World Cup,” said Capello.

The news is a welcome boost as the 30-man squad announced on Tuesday gather for a 10-day training camp in Austria.

The Italian said he has learnt a lot during his three years in England about the ways of the Premier League and the minds of his players.

“Now we arrive at the most important moment, but also this [preparation for the World Cup] is new for me,” Capello said.

“As a manager, you have to understand the pressure of the fans and the confidence the country have in this team. It’s a really rare sight,” The Times quoted him, as saying. (ANI)

Becks still dreams of bringing World Cup to England

London, May 14 (ANI): In an article for the BBC, football star David Beckham has said that it has always been a dream of his to bring the World Cup to England.

“I dreamed as a schoolboy of playing in a World Cup finals. I have been lucky enough to enjoy that experience and I hope I can again this summer. I dreamed as well of seeing a World Cup tournament played in England – and together we have a chance to make that happen in 2018,” Beckham says.

“We also have the chance to host the World Cup in our own country if we can get everyone to support it. The people who will decide who gets to hold the tournament will want to see that support.
So my message to England fans everywhere is, please support us and really get behind the team in South Africa, but also get behind the 2018 bid,” he adds.

“I might not make it as a player to the 2018 World Cup, but whether it’s as a player, a pundit or a fan, I’ll take any opportunity to be there – and I want it to be in England,” Beckham said. (ANI)

Capello wants Becks to join him in S. Africa as `England coach’

London, May 14 (ANI): Coach Fabio Capello wants David Beckham to join him on the coaching staff at this year’s World Cup.

Becks is currently out of the squad with a ruptured Achilles tendon, but Capello believes he could be of great help behind the scenes, The Sun reports.

Beckham, 35, however, will not be going to the squad”s pre-World Cup training camp in Austria, as he continues the rehabilitation from his injury. Instead, he will fly out with the 23-player party to South Africa on June 2.

The England 2018 bid team want to use the former skipper to help promote their campaign to host the World Cup in eight years” time.

Capello, though, will release Becks, for only one or two events and the coaching job will be his main focus. (ANI)

Capello stuns FA, England fans by being involved in England players rating game

London, May 11 (ANI): With the World Cup now only a month away England football boss Fabio Capello has cashed in on his high-profile position to back an online World Cup fantasy-football cash game, leaving the FA and fans both stunned.

According to The Sun, Capello has linked up with a gambling firm that is to push punters to part with up to 199.99 pounds, in the hope of winning money off the back of England performances at this summer’s South African football extravaganza.

Capello has reportedly created a system called ‘The Capello Index’, that he will use to rate his England players and this system will be updated two hours after each World Cup match.

Capello claimed that his index will help inform England fans during the World Cup, but really fans are just encouraged to use it to help them play Capello XI, that has entrance fees ranging from 29.99 pounds and 199.99 pounds.

Capello said: “It’s not only about money, my interest is in football.” (ANI)

Mourinho says will return to manage club in England

London, May 7 (ANI): Jose Mourinho, known in international football circles as the `Special One’, has said that he has set his heart on returning to England after clinching the first leg of a possible treble with Inter Milan.

Mourinho, who is expected to succeed Manuel Pellegrini at Real Madrid, admitted he was unlikely to reappear in the Premier League next season.

The Mirror quoted former Chelsea coach Mourinho, as saying: “I lived in England for three years and I know I will return. Will it be next year? I don’t know, but for sure I will be back and I could go to any club. Chelsea is a beautiful team, but I am a football coach, not just a Chelsea coach.” (ANI)

Tottenham stars can win World Cup for England

London, May 7 (ANI): Tottenham Hotspurs manager Harry Redknapp believes eight of his stars, if selected, can help make Fabio Capello”s England squad win next month’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The Sun quoted Redknapp, as saying: “I honestly think Ledley King, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, David Bentley and Jermaine Jenas will be in Capello”s first squad of 30.

“I”d love 2010 to go down as the year Tottenham won the World Cup with the amount of players they could supply for Fabio Capello”s crack at the big one.

“I started with six England players when Tottenham clinched fourth place at Manchester City. I then brought on Bentley and I still had Jenas sitting on the bench, who has already played 21 times for his country. That would be by a long way the most players any single club will provide for Capello”s search for the ultimate international honour,” Redknapp said. (ANI)

Capello vows to bust two ghosts of England’s World Cups past

London, May 6 (ANI): Coach Fabio Capello has assured that two ghosts of England’s World Cups past, the Germans and penalties, will be busted by the team he is busy giving finishing touches.

Capello will submit his provisional 30-man England World Cup squad to FIFA next Tuesday, which will be brought down to 23 on June 1.

Capello has drawn a comparison with the task put in front of him when he was officially appointed manager in December 2007.

“I have tried to take a detached view from this ‘not having won in 44 years’ idea. When I first got here we had this Croatian ghost (the Wembley defeat under Steve McClaren that saw England miss out on Euro 2008). I hope the same thing happens with the ghost of 66.

“I like the Ghost Busters idea. Let’s go with that because I want to take this team as far as possible,” The Daily Express quoted Capello, as saying.

Capello is worried some of his stars will be tired when England meet for the start of their first Austrian training camp on May 17 and believes Germany could benefit from the Bundesliga’s winter break.

“The English players will arrive a bit tired, but in one month, with the doctors and the training, we will be fit for the start of the World Cup,” he said.

England lost on penalties to the Germans in the 1990 World Cup and Euro 96, and has lost subsequent shoot-outs against Argentina and Portugal.

“We practise penalties in training every time we stay together, but it is easy to score then because the pressure is not the same as having to score to win a game,” said Capello. (ANI)

Becks rules out England move

London, Apr 28 (ANI): David Beckham, who has been living in Los Angeles with wife Victoria and three sons for three years, has ruled out a move back to England.

While on US talk show The View, he said: “We love England – London is where we”re both from, but this is a new phase of our life that we”re really enjoying.

“We”ve been in Los Angeles now for three years, and we”re so happy there – we”re not going to be moving back anytime soon.”

He further revealed that he and wife Posh have no immediate plans to expand the brood, reports The Mirror.

“We”ve got a great family base. We”ve got our amazing three boys, and we protect them with every ounce of energy that we have,” he said.

Victoria added: “I think one day, if we”re blessed to have more children, it would be amazing. It”s a lot having three boys. So, we”re just enjoying the boys at the moment. But who knows, one day?” (ANI)
