Beckham to help ‘dumped’ Walcott deal with despair

London, June 4(ANI): England footballer David Beckham has offered to help winger Theo Walcott to come to terms with being excluded from Fabio Capello’s 23-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa.

Beckham has texted Walcott and told him to keep his chin up. He also plans a more in-depth phone chat over the next 10 days.

The 35-year-old feels a particular affection for Walcott, whom he took under his wing at the 2006 World Cup in Germany when he was skipper and Walcott was a star-struck 17-year-old, The Sun reports.

He is especially keen that Walcott realises he can still be a big part of England’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign and beyond.

Walcott had been a crucial member of Capello’s team for World Cup qualifying rounds, and had enhanced his reputation when he struck a hat-trick against Croatia in 2008.

However, following injuries and a loss of form, Walcott was left out of the final 23, which was announced on Tuesday. (ANI)

Beckham rallies England squad to win World Cup for Brit soldiers in Afghanistan

London, May 26(ANI): England footballer David Beckham has called on Fabio Capello’s men to secure World Cup glory in South Africa to honour the British soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

Beckham, who was recently in Afghanistan for a surprise visit to boost the morale of thousands of British troops serving in the country, delivered a dressing room speech to his England team-mates before Monday’s friendly 3-1 victory over Mexico.

England captain Rio Ferdinand said that Beckham told the squad to be inspired by the troops in Afghanistan.

“Becks came in the changing room and he was talking about his trip. He told us about the experience he had going over there and what is was really like. He said the lads do a great job for us,” The Mirror quoted Ferdinand, as saying.

“It is great that we are getting support from the boys in Afghanistan. With them being so far away they probably think we don”t really care about what is going on, but we do,” he added.

Earlier, Beckham, who is recovering from an Achilles-tendon injury, had spoken about his respect for the armed forces.

“I have nothing, but admiration for these young men and women and it makes me very proud to be British,” Beckham said.

Britain has around 10,000 troops in Afghanistan as part of an international force, largely fighting the Taliban. (ANI)

England stars need to be at their best to win World Cup: Le Saux

London, May 21(ANI): Former England footballer Graeme Le Saux claims that every single member of the Three Lions’ squad will have to be at their best to win the World Cup.

“We’ve got a fantastic manager and some great players, so we just have to hope the whole squad combines and gels. It’s important that the players on the fringes of the first XI are in the right frame of mind to put in great performances when needed,” The Sun quoted Le Saux, as saying.

“If we’re going to be successful in South Africa, it’s clearly going to be about the squad and not just the regulars. I don’t think you can rely on one player,” he added.

The 41-year-old also believes that striker Wayne Rooney could be the difference, but Capello would not win matches without a system and a game plan.

“If it’s just about Rooney, then we won’t achieve anything — and that’s with no disrespect to him, quite the opposite in fact. He’s a key part of how we attack and score goals, but ultimately we’re going to need other players to chip in,” Le Saux said.

“And that in a sense is exactly what we have in the rest of the squad with the likes of Lampard and Gerrard. If you look at the other top teams, they all have great players, but there’s a fantastic team and structure around them,” he added. (ANI)

Burglars threatened to take Gerrard’s kids away

London, May 15 (ANI): Burglars warned the wife of England footballer Steven Gerrard that they would take her kids in a terrifying raid on their home.

The Liverpool Crown Court was told that Alex Curran confronted the masked gang, who demanded she hand over jewellery and the contents of a safe.

Details of the ordeal emerged after Martin Wilson, 22, changed his plea and admitted the burglary following legal arguments, The Telegraph reports.

Graham Pickavance, for the prosecution, told the court the robbery took place in December 2007 as the Reds captain led his team to victory in a Champions League game against Marseille.

Curran, 27, had remained at the home in Formby, Merseyside, with their two children, Lilly-Ella and Lexie, now aged six and four, and their nanny Lyndsey Johnston.

Pickavance described the mansion as secured by high walls, a fence and electronically controlled gates, The Telegraph reports.

Police caught up with Wilson by analysing the use of his mobile phone, the court heard.

The defendant is serving six years and eight months in jail after admitting conspiracy to burgle at Liverpool Crown Court last June, The Telegraph reports. (ANI)

Gazza’s ex-wife accepts five-figure payout from newspaper

London, May 8 (ANI): Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne’s ex-wife has accepted a five-figure payout from a newspaper over an article alleging that she was a liar.

Sheryl Gascoigne was present at the High Court in London for a brief hearing before Justice Tugendhat.

Her solicitor, Roderick Chisholm-Batten, told the judge that a News of the World article suggested she had lied by falsely claiming that her former husband had forced himself on her sexually and that she suffered repeated acts of violence at his hands.

The lawyer said the article was published on October 18, 2009, and entitled “You Lying Bitch”.

“The article suggested that Ms Gascoigne had lied in both her book and the interview by falsely claiming that Mr Gascoigne had forced himself on her sexually,” the Scotsman quoted Chisholm-Batten as saying.

“It also suggested that she had lied in both her book and the interview by falsely claiming that she suffered repeated acts of violence at the hands of Mr Gascoigne,” he stated.

The defendant, News Group Newspapers, “now accepts that each of these allegations was completely untrue”.

“It is here today, by its solicitor, to apologise publicly and unreservedly for the distress and embarrassment that this article has caused Ms Gascoigne. The News of the World has agreed to pay to her damages,” he said.

The damages figure was not disclosed in court, but Sheryl said that she was relieved.

“I am just glad it is all over and that justice is done,” she added. (ANI)

Walcott’s career as author of children’s books kicks off

London, Apr 30(ANI): England footballer Theo Walcott has kicked off his career as an author with the launch of the first in a series of children’s books.

Walcott’s foray into the world of literature, which goes on sale this week, is aimed at children aged from 9-11

The 128-page books, published by Random House and co-written with an author, closely mirror his own experience as a late bloomer in junior football, Sky News reports.

Random House had snapped up the 20-year-old in December last year after he penned two stories for fun about a hero schoolboy, who happens to be a football wonderkid.

Walcott had earlier confessed that the adventures of the schoolboy, TJ, mirror his own life.

“Many of my experiences as a young footballer will be relived by TJ in the stories. I’m really excited to be working on this series,” The Sun quoted Walcott, as saying.

Walcott, whose school nickname was TJ and who scored more than 100 goals in one season for AFC Newbury, is hopeful that his books will prove to be rip-roaring yarns that also appeal to girls. (ANI)

Rooney should play up front alone in World Cup: Lineker

London, Apr 24(ANI): Former England footballer Gary Lineker believes that striker Wayne Rooney should play up front alone in this summer’s World Cup.

Rooney has hit 34 goals playing as a lone striker for his club Manchester United this season, and Lineker wants England manager Fabio Capello to use him in a similar role during the tournament in South Africa.

“Wayne’s been brilliant in that role for United. He has played with Emile Heskey and Capello might consider Peter Crouch or Jermain Defoe. But the alternative is to play Wayne like he does for United with Gerrard or Joe Cole,” The Sun quoted Lineker, as saying.

“I fancy using Gerrard with him because that gives him licence to do what he wants and he’s brilliant when on song,” he added.

The 49-year-old further reckons South Africa could prove the stage where Rooney could establish himself as one of greatest players to represent England.

“I was not in the same league as Rooney. He is a much better footballer than I ever was,” Lineker said.

“I was a goalscorer. He is a goalscorer and more. A wonderful talented all-round footballer. I would have loved to have played with him,” he added. (ANI)

Cheryl Cole was planning to have kids before hubby’s sexcapades were exposed

London, March 23 (ANI): Cheryl Cole’s brother Andrew Tweedy has revealed that the singer was planning to become a mother before her husband/soccer star Ashley’s affairs were exposed.

The Girls Aloud lead’s sibling suggested she should divorce the England footballer, as he had run out of “get out of jail free cards”.

“I am absolutely devastated for Cheryl. It was such a shock because everything appeared to be hunky dory,” the Daily Star quoted Andrew, 29, as stating.

He added: “We come from a big family and Cheryl has got the maternal instinct.

“It was common knowledge that they were thinking about it and trying to organise how to sort things out with their careers to get around it. What’s happened has hit her really hard.”

Tweedy, a recovering alcoholic who has been in prison in the past, said the Chelsea star wanted to attend counselling sessions to save his marriage but Cheryl refused.

He said: “He’s obviously trying to worm his way back in but she’s not having any of it, he has done it too many times now.

“She has already given him chances but I don’t think he’s got any more get out of jail free cards left.”

Also, he branded Ashley “arrogant” for complaining about Arsenal’s 55,000 pounds-a-week offer, after he demanded 60,000 pounds.

Tweedy ended: “Cheryl knows the value of money but f***ing hell, some people are lucky to get 55 pound a week. She should’ve put a rocket up his arse about that.” (ANI)

The pair discovered they were going to be parents shortly after their lavish wedding in West London in June.

Their friends believe Carly got pregnant on their Caribbean honeymoon, which they went on before their wedding.

“They are absolutely over the moon. They were desperate to start a family as soon as they got married – we knew it was just a matter of time. Joe hasn’t been able to stop smiling,” said a source. (ANI)

Cheryl Cole’s brother apologies for bringing her shame

London, May 15 (ANI): X Factor judge Cheryl Cole’s jailed brother Andrew Tweedy apologized in court on May 14 for bringing her shame.

Tweedy, 29, of Heaton, Newcastle, got only a suspended sentence at Newcastle Crown Court after admitting common assault for a pepper-spray attack on passer-by Lee Clark, 30, reports the Daily Express.

He has over 80 convictions, has received jail terms totalling 10 years, and now has to pay 250 pounds as compensation to Clark.

Tweedy, currently jobless, has vowed to turn his life around for the sake of the 25-year-old ‘Girls Aloud’ member and wife of England footballer Ashley Cole.

The judge suspended a 36-week jail term for two years when he heard Tweedy had an offer of work and his girlfriend had just given birth. (ANI)

Brits know more about celebs than historical events

London, May 14 (ANI): Call it “celebrity fever” or, simply, lack of interest – majority of people are clueless about general history but when it comes to celebs they’re pretty well-informed, finds a UK study.

According to the research, nine out of 10 adults know the names of the Beckhams’ three children, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, but less than half know John Major was Prime Minister during the first Gulf War, reports The Telegraph.

Shockingly, a third of Britons believe that the last General Election took place in 2008 rather than 2005, but more than eight out of ten knew Chelsea and England footballer Ashley Cole’s wife was X Factor judge Cheryl.

It also emerged that three quarters of the 3,000 surveyed know Kerry Katona’s first husband was Bryan McFadden, however, 20 percent don’t know February 29th was a Leap Day.

A spokesman for www.triviala.com said: “We were genuinely surprised that so many British adults are confused about general history – even more recent events such as the Beijing Olympics left folk floundering.

“However, when it came to celebrities, all of a sudden our respondents were knowledgeable and inspired, quickly coming up with the right answers time after time.

“Although we were surprised at the greater celebrity knowledge of the quiz’s respondents, perhaps it’s just symptomatic of our celebrity-obsessed culture, with gossip stories rather than solid news providing most of the headlines in some sections of the media.” (ANI)

Wayne Rooney has to choose between baby’s birth and world cup qualifying match

London, Apr 13 (ANI): England footballer is facing the toughest choice of his life, as he has to choose between his newborn’s birth and his world cup-qualifying match, as both fall on the same day.

Wayne and wife Coleen’s baby is due on October 10, the same day on which the footballer has a world cup qualifying match in Ukraine.

It is very important for Wayne to take part in the qualifying match, as it will decide whether England will secure a place in the forthcoming World Cup in South Africa or not.

“Wayne can’t believe it, the chances of them both falling on the same day are so slim,” the Daily Star quoted a source as saying.

However, being a doting husband, Wayne is keen to be with his wife on the special day.

“Obviously he’s longing for the baby to arrive and will do anything to be there for Coleen. But at the same time he knows England need him for this match. There will be a lot of pressure on him,” the source added. (ANI)

London, Apr 8 (ANI): At 7ft 4 1/2ins, Brenden, from Ellensburg, Washington, is the tallest boy in the world, and will be featured in an ITV1 documentary ‘Superhuman’, along with other adolescents who stand higher in a crowd.

Most of the teenagers in the documentary tower over Peter Crouch, the 6ft 7ins England footballer, and have to have custom-made beds, clothes and houses to accommodate their frames.

Although Brenden was born a normal 7lb 4oz, at 12 months he was the size of a three-year-old.

And by the time he turned eight, he was as big as an adult, reports the Telegraph.

Doctors diagnosed his abnormal height to a problem with his chromosomes, and have now slowed down the rate at which he is getting taller.

The married father-of-two was originally charged with affray and assault.

‘Professor’ Lampard’s IQ puts him in Brit’s most intelligent category

London, Mar.5 (ANI): Chelsea and England footballer star Frank Lampard has returned one of the highest scores ever seen by experts, that has been put in the most intelligent 0.1 per cent of Britain’s population.

The former public schoolboy, 30, is now referred to as The Professor by Stamford Bridge teammates, according to the Daily Star.

The tests were conducted by Brian English, the Chelsea club doctor, as part of research into how head injuries can affect footballers’ neurological development.

“John Terry was in the top three, but Frank Lampard scored one of the highest set of marks ever recorded by the company doing the tests, and higher than me,” Dr English said.

The newspaper quoted sources as claiming that Lampard’s IQ score was more than 150.

Vorderman, the former Countdown presenter famed for her mathematical prowess, has an IQ of 154, while the national average is 100.

Lampard was educated at the fee-paying Brentwood School in Essex where he obtained 12 GCSEs – including an A in Latin – before turning professional at his first club West Ham. (ANI)

Now, ‘male girdle’ to guarantee flat tummy for just 49 pounds

London, Feb 27 (ANI): If you are one of those men who just can’t get up from the bed to go for a run or hit the gym, here’s the solution for you to reduce that protruding paunch and that too without the need of any work out-male girdle.

Available for just 49 pounds, Equmen’s Core Precision Undershirt for men is quite similar to women’s shapewear or ‘control pants’ to maintain a trim backside.

Next month onwards, the “core precision undershirt” for men will be available at Selfridges in UK.

Made of polyester, spandex and nylon, the girdles are designed to force men’s bodies to look leaner under a slim-line suit, or even to help correct poor posture.

Manufactured by Australian manufacturer Equmen, the vests and T-shirts are already on sale in the U.S. and Australia.

And now the miracle underwear has been launched in UK as statistics show that British men are more likely to be overweight than women.

In fact, former England footballer Les Ferdinand has supported the new control underwear, saying that the undershirt is ‘a pretty miraculous product’.

According to a Selfridges spokeswoman, the store was hoping that its male customers were ready for the idea of control underwear.

‘It’s a very tight-fitting T-shirt, so it’s not like we’re asking men to wear a bra. It’s quite inoffensive,” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

She added: ‘We’ve never stocked male control-wear before, so it will be a test. It may be that women will buy them for men, until men become more familiar with it.”

Although, designs for control pants for men are currently being developed, there are some brands that are already retailing the male girdles. (ANI)

Lamps turns to cousin to deal with double blow

London, Feb. 19 (ANI): England footballer Frank Lampard is taking cousin Jamie Redknapp’s help to deal with his recent break-up from fiancie Elen Rives and the loss of his mother, Pat, last year.

Friends of the 30-year-old midfielder say that he is turning to TV pundit Jamie’s guidance to come to terms with the double blow. Jamie is son of Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp and Sandra Harris.

“Frank turned to Jamie, not to his club team-mates, as he feels he can show all his sadness to Jamie, and his cousin understands. If it wasn’t for Jamie, Frank says he doesn’t know how he would have been able to cope with the past few months,” The Daily Express quoted Lampard’s friend, as saying.

Frank was extremely close to his mother who died from pneumonia in April last year aged 58.

Lampard didn’t feel ready to speak of his irreparable blow before last month, but by then the depression had already added to the strain on his relationship with Spanish born Elen, 29, with whom he has two daughters, Luna, two, and Isla, one.

After spending seven years together, the pair announced their split on Valentine’s Day.

“Elen told Frank she was having doubts about the relationship while his mother was ill and it was Jamie who convinced her to stay. Elen found it hard to cope but Jamie talked her through it,” a friend said.

“She stayed long enough for Frank to come to terms with losing his mother but sometimes they barely spoke for weeks,” he added.

In July 2007, Frank and Elen had called off their wedding, as Elen was furious after seeing his pictures with another woman in a publication following allegations that he’d had a fling with Spanish girl Montse Lucas in 2006. (ANI)

According to the Daily Express, he wants to repay Gazza who gave him support when his father, footie legend George Best, died after a long battle with alcohol.

“He is such a good guy and all he is doing is escaping by getting on the bottle,” said Calum, 27.

“I would just ask him to please get in touch. But you look at what he is doing and think ‘Wow – I have been through that one and I know the sad ending and I just hope it doesn’t end that way’.” (ANI)
