Leaked US video shows deaths of photographer

Classified US military video showing a 2007 attack by Apache helicopters that killed a dozen people in Baghdad, including two Reuters news staff, was released on Monday by a group that promotes leaking to fight government and corporate corruption.

The group, WikiLeaks, told a news conference in Washington that it acquired encrypted video of the July 12, 2007, attack from military whistleblowers and had been able to view and investigate it after breaking the encryption code.

A US defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the video and audio were authentic.

Major Shawn Turner, a spokesman for US Central Command, said an investigation of the incident shortly after it occurred found that US forces were not aware of the presence of the news staffers and thought they were engaging armed insurgents.

“We regret the loss of innocent life, but this incident was promptly investigated and there was never any attempt to cover up any aspect of this engagement,” Turner said.

The helicopter gunsight video, with an audio track of conversation between the fliers, made public for the first time a stark view of one bloody incident in the seven-year war in Iraq.

It showed an aerial view of a group of men moving about a square in a Baghdad neighbourhood. The fliers identified some of the men as armed.

WikiLeaks said the men in the square included Reuters photographer Namir Noor-Eldeen, 22, and his assistant and driver Saeed Chmagh, 40, who were killed in the incident.

“The gathering at the corner that is fired up on has about nine people in it,” Julian Assange, a WikiLeaks spokesman, told reporters at the National Press Club.

The gunsight tracks two of the men, identified by WikiLeaks as the Reuters news staff, as the fliers identify their cameras as weapons. Military spokesman Turner said that during the engagement, the helicopter mistook a camera for a rocket-propelled grenade launcher.

The helicopter opened fire on the small group, killing several people and wounding others. Minutes later, when a van approached and began trying to assist the wounded, the fliers became concerned the vehicle was occupied by militants trying to collect weapons and help wounded comrades escape.

The Apache helicopters requested permission to attack the van and waited impatiently.

“Come on, let us shoot,” said one voice.

The fliers were granted permission to engage the van and opened fire, apparently killing several people in and around the vehicle.

Two children wounded in the van were evacuated by US ground forces arriving at the scene as the Apache helicopters continued to circle overhead.

“Well it’s their fault for bringing their kids into a battle,” one of the US fliers said.

David Schlesinger, Reuters’ editor-in-chief, said the video released by WikiLeaks showed the deaths of Noor-Eldeen and Chmagh were “tragic and emblematic of the extreme dangers that exist in covering war zones.”

“The video released today via WikiLeaks is graphic evidence of the dangers involved in war journalism and the tragedies that can result,” he said.

Reuters has pressed the US military to conduct a full and objective investigation into the killing of the two staff.

Video of the incident from two US Apache helicopters and photographs taken of the scene were shown to Reuters editors in an off-the-record briefing in Baghdad on July 25, 2007.

US military officers who presented the materials said Reuters had to make a request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to get copies. This request was made the same day.

Turner said the military had released documents to Reuters last year in response to the FOIA request showing the presence of weapons on the scene, including AK-47 rifles and an RPG 7 grenade launcher.

Assange said he disagreed with a US military assessment that the attack was justified.

“I believe that if those killings were lawful under the rules of engagement, then the rules of engagement are wrong, deeply wrong,” he said. The fliers in the video act “like they are playing a computer game and their desire is they want to get high scores” by killing opponents, he said.

Cost-cutting Queen to chop monarchy to ‘fab four’

London, April 4 (ANI): In her latest cost-cutting effort, the Queen is to chop the monarchy down to a ‘fab four’ – herself, Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry.

The slimmed-down line-up means taxpayers will not have to fork out so much for the family – and the Queen hopes it will also boost their public image.

Her scheme is set to be phased in from June, when Princes William and Harry go on their first-ever joint tour.

“Her Majesty wants to leave the monarchy stronger. To achieve this they must have the respect of the people,” News of the World quoted a senior royal source as saying.

“She is determined to pass on a fit and healthy institution.

“There is a belief at the very top that to achieve this, the monarchy must emulate the time when it was most respected – at the end of the late 1940s when King George VI described it as ‘we four’.

“And she believes William and Harry should take the lead.

“This means there is trouble ahead for the surplus younger royals,” the source added.

Kate Middleton, Prince William’s long-term girlfriend, is not part of the plans yet.

“Until an engagement is official, the core focus is on the key members of the family,” one source said. (ANI)

Six factors that affect pupils’ involvement in school activities

Washington, Sep 2 (ANI): An expert on classroom education at the University at Buffalo has listed six factors that affect whether elementary, middle and high school students get involved in the activities of their schools or feel detached.

Dr. Jeremy D. Finn said that students who feel “disengaged” from school are at greater risk for dropping out, avoiding challenging courses, scoring low on standardized achievement tests and achieving less as adults.

“Disengagement is the failure to develop a sense of school membership, failure to participate actively in class and school activities, or failure to become cognitively involved in learning. Different degrees of disengagement may be exhibited by students at all stages of schooling. The extreme of disengagement is leaving school without graduating, thus severing connections with school, teachers and activities that support learning,” said Finn.

And according to him, the six factors that can contribute to student disengagement are:

1. Failure to provide early school experiences that can impact engagement in later grades

2. School conditions that are inconsistent with the needs of adolescents

3. School conditions that produce feelings of anonymity

4. Rules and disciplinary practices that are unclear, too harsh or administered unfairly.

5. Inadequate academic and personal support for students at risk of “disidentification.”

6. Course work that may be seen as irrelevant to the needs of the students (upper grades).

These six factors and solutions are drawn from Finn’s research on the effects of class size, from an analysis of published research on the subject and from the “Dropout Prevention Guide,” which is authored by six experts including Finn.

He noted that each of the six factors can be addressed by changing school policies and/or practices to affect student behaviour.

Finn is presenting the research at an international education symposium on student engagement in New Zealand. (ANI)

Tyra Banks slams engagement rumours

London, September 1 (ANI): Tyra Banks has slammed rumours claiming she is set to tie the knot with her businessman boyfriend John Utendahl.

The model-turned-TV presenter sparked engagement rumours after she was spotted wearing a dazzling diamond on her ring finger.

The ‘America’s Next Top Model’ host, who has been dating Utendahl since 2007, was snapped wearing the sparkler after dining out with her beau in Los Angeles, reports the Daily Star.

But the star’s representatives have trashed speculation about the couple taking their romance to the next level.

Her spokesperson told GossipCop.com: “Tyra is not engaged – it’s her high school ring and she wears it almost every day.” (ANI)

Cash-strapped Brit couples prefer to buy practical gifts than luxuries

London, Aug 26 (ANI): Romantic presents like flowers and jewellery are fast becoming history, courtesy cash-strapped couples who prefer gifting useful and practical presents to each other.

That’s the conclusion of a new research.

The study revealed that almost 60 per cent of Britons preferred to buy a useful article as gift for their partners, rather than something that is not a necessity, reports the Scotsman.

The researchers found that most couples gifted jewellery to each other two decades ago. But now, they’ve been turned into gadgets like iPod, or DVDs and books.

Jewellery came in third in the list, but a kitchen gadget such as a breadmaker was named the fourth most popular gift.

One tenth of the couples admitted to have rarely gifted anything to their partners in order to save money, while one fifth said they did not exchange any gifts to save money.

The survey of 2,500 married Britons also showed that couples now spent about 196.47 pounds on each other at birthdays and Christmas, compared to nearly 230 pounds 20 years ago.

Three-quarters of today’s couples have even set limits on the amount of money to be spent on gifts, to ensure that neither overspends. Only 50 percent of those married 20 years ago followed the same.

It has also been found that people are spending less money on engagement rings. Twenty years ago men spent an average of two months’ income on their partner’s engagement ring, but now males spend just one month’s wages.

Jonathan Caplan, from gold-buying website www.mygoldmine.co.uk, said: “Times are harder, so it’s not surprising to see people are tightening their belts, but it’s sad to think that celebrations are taking the hit.

“Romantic gifts, however small, will be around and enjoyed far longer than the iPod, which will be forgotten for a newer model.” (ANI)

Gilani regurgates Kashmir, spoils chances of a rapproachment

Sharm-el-Sheikh (Egypt), July 15 (ANI): Barely into the second paragraph of his speech at the 15th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement at Sharm-el-Sheikh, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani brought up the topic of Kashmir by saying “long standing unresolved disputes” were putting stress on international systems.

And, as if this hint was not enough, Gilani later in his speech said: “Durable peace in South Asia is achievable” and that it could only be “facilitated by the resolution of all outstanding disputes, including Jammu and Kashmir.” his was not a soundbite or an off the cuff remark, which a Zardari or a Musharraf might have made. It is a well thought out and planned statement made by the Paksitani Prime MInister, knowing fully well what the repurcussions would be.

He is well aware that relations between India and Pakistan are just about limping towards a restart and to use the ‘K’ word in such a situation is nothing short of twisting of the arm like the one seen during the Agra summit of 2001.

At that time, President General Musharraf came with all his bluster and confidence that he could convince the then Prime Minister of India, Atal Behari Vajpayee to put into the joint declaration that Kashmir was a disputed territory.

The then Pakistani delegation was all but convinced that they had been able to soften the Indian Prime Minister and even his powerful aide, Brajesh Mishra. And then, all hell broke loose when India apparently made clear to the Pakistani side that Musharraf was mistaken in making this assumption.

While most people on either side of the border believe that the “unknown hand” that worked to scuttle the Agra talks, was the then home minister L.K.Advani, it is still unclear who managed to withstand the enormous international pressure and tell Pakistan where to get off.

In the past two days, it has become apparent that the war of words over how and in what format India and Pakistan should begin talking is what is vexing both sides. Pakistan hasn’t forgotten the rap on the knuckles delivered by Prime Minister Singh to President Zardari at Yekatarinburg last month, when he said in the presence of the media that his mandate was to tell Pakistan not to allow its soil to be used by terrorists to wage war on India.

It was uncharacteristic of the Indian Prime Minister to make such a stringent remark, and sure enough, within a few weeks, the reasonable Dr Singh said: “Let me say that what I had said to Zardari Sahib, I had not intended to say that in the presence of the media. I simply forgot that the media were present there. It was not my intention to hurt Zardari Sahib’s feelings.”

But that kind of grace is not visible here at Sharm-el-Sheikh. Gilani is scheduled to meet the Indian Prime Minister for the first time tomorrow morning and a reasonable attitude could have furthered the cause of a fruitful dialogue at the very top.

But this speech of Gilani is a spoiler for sure. With the Pakistani press already saying that Foreign Secretary-level talks have hit a deadlock over the format for resumption of India-Pakistan talks, it is unclear what Gilani meant in his speech when he said, “There has recently been some forward movement in our relations with India. We hope to sustain this momentum and move towards comprehensive engagement.” By Smita Prakash (ANI)

Live-in lovers more likely to have ‘unhealthy’ marriage

Washington, July 14 (ANI): Couples who live together before they are engaged are more likely to get divorced than those who wait until they are married to live together, or at least wait until they are engaged, according to a new study.

In the study, researchers at the University of Denver (DU) also found that couples, who lived together before engagement and then married, reported a lower satisfaction in their marriages.

The study was conducted by Galena Rhoades, senior researcher, Scott Stanley, research professor, and Howard Markman, professor of psychology.

“We think that some couples who move in together without a clear commitment to marriage may wind up sliding into marriage partly because they are already cohabiting,” Rhoades said.
tanley added: “It seems wise to talk about commitment and what living together might mean for the future of the relationship before moving in together, especially because cohabiting likely makes it harder to break up compared to dating.”

The study appears in the Journal of Family Psychology. (ANI)

Government inefficiency places people in coastal zones at risk from tsunamis

Washington, July 11 (ANI): A team of international experts has determined that governments have largely failed to seriously implement integrated management in coastal zones, placing people at risk of disasters such as hurricane Katrina and the Banda Aceh tsunami.

This was the conclusion of 40 international experts from wide ranging disciplines including economics, social sciences and natural sciences who met for an intensive, 5 day workshop near Oslo, Norway.

Many Megacities such as Tokyo, New York and London are found in the coastal zone.

According to researchers, coastal protection measures give a sense of false security and require increasingly expensive infrastructure.

The treatment and cure of these coastal syndromes includes renewable energy, recycled water and solid waste, sourcing locally grown foods and attention to social equity issues, especially in education and healthcare.

The researchers said that up to now, governments at all scales, from local to international, have largely failed to seriously implement integrated management in coastal zones.

This has placed people at risk of disasters such as hurricane Katrina and the Banda Aceh tsunami.

The interconnection of coastal processes with upstream management in river catchment has widely been ignored, causing coastal erosion, lack of runoff, nutrient shortage and subsiding deltas.

The pace of change in general is increasing and regionally, the world is already seeing both economic and climate-change refugees.

In parallel, there are climate entrepreneurs eager to exploit Arctic resources.

Climate change is exposing the fragile Arctic coasts and ecosystems as well as their vulnerable inhabitants, who subsist on traditional lifestyles, to increasing risks.

Innovation is needed to solve the widespread problems, if we are to turn the tide of losses.

According to researchers, we must enable governance at all scales from intergovernmental engagement to the individual, personal choices that may counteract the tyranny of “small and short sighted decisions”. (ANI)

Mullen acknowledges possibility of Iran acquiring nuclear weapons

Washington, July 8(ANI): Admiral Michael Mullen, the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS), has acknowledged the possibility of Iran succeeding in acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Admiral Mullen acknowledged this while addressing the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington on Tuesday.

“I believe Iran is very focused on developing this capability, and I think when they get it, or should they get it, it will be very destabilizing,” The Jerusalem Post quoted Admiral Mullen, as saying.

Admiral Mullen also highlighted that an attack on Iran would be similarly destabilizing.

“There are unintended consequences that are very difficult to predict in a very volatile, highly volatile part of the world,” he added.

He specifically warned about the consequences of any step taken by both countries, indicating retaliatory violence spreading throughout the region and potentially to other parts of the world.

He backed the President Obama’s approach of holding talks with Iran, but refused to rule out the use of military strikes despite potential negative effects.

“There is a great deal that certainly depends on the dialogue and the engagement, and I think we need to do that with all options remaining on the table, including, certainly, military options,” Admiral Mullen said.

Estimating that Iran would take one to three years to develop a nuclear weapon, he warned that the time window is closing and that the clock is ticking. (ANI)
