World leaders greet Obama inauguration with hope, caution

World leaders lined up on Tuesday to pay tributes to Barack Obama on the occasion of his inauguration as the 44th president of the United States, with the new president drawing comment from America’s allies across the globe – as well as from current enemies.

In the Middle East, where American stock has fallen furthest in recent years, guarded welcome for the president-to-be was evident.

Iran expressed a hope that Barack Obama will “choose the right path” toward Iran, ISNA news agency reported Tuesday.

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that the US had no correct approach towards Iran and always been the “troublemaker.”

“But if Obama chose the right path, compensated the past, lifted hostility and [US] hegemony, and revised the previous political mistakes, we would have no hostility,” Mottaki said.

Iran and the US have been engaged in a protracted face-off over the former’s supposed nuclear weapons programme, an issue unresolved by the end of George W Bush’s presidency.

“We hope that angles of optimism would be created [with Obama] but the facts tell us we should not be optimistic,” Mottaki added.

The United States’ firmest ally in the region, Israel, was suitably enthusiastic about the new resident of the White House.

Israeli President Shimon Peres said that the inauguration of Obama is a “great day” for the United States because his “most unusual hope and election, only ten years ago, would have been unimaginable,” Israeli President Shimon Peres said Tuesday.

“What made history ugly, unmistakably, was basically slavery and there were two sorts of slavery: men upon women and white upon black,” Peres said.

In Europe, Obama was welcomed as the beginning of a new, perhaps more multilateral era.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a television interview that she is hoping for improved US-German relations under the Obama presidency.

“I hope that our cooperation is shaped by listening to one another, and making decisions on the basis that one country alone cannot solve the world’s problems,” Merkel said Tuesday on German state broadcaster ARD.

“This is the spirit in which I will encounter him,” the chancellor added.

Merkel said Obama was taking office at a time marred by problems, “for one thing, the economic situation in the world and also in the United States of America, but also many international conflicts”

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Tuesday that he was impatient for Obama to take office so that the two of them could “change the world.”

“We are eager to see him go to work so that we can change the world with him,” Sarkozy said during a stop in the city of Provins.

However, Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner warned that Obama could not work political miracles.

“He is an exceptional man,” Kouchner said, “but he does not have a magic wand.”

The European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said he looked forward to working with Obama “to promote a politics of global engagement that will support international institutions reformed to address effectively our global responsibilities, from climate change to development aid, trade, democracy and human rights, and sound financial systems.”

In Britain, Queen Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Gordon Brown sent messages of support to Obama as parties were held across Britain to mark the handover of power.

The European response was also marked with a touch of the bizarre. Former French presidential candidate Segolene Royal said Obama was inspired by her campaign and copied it, according to the online edition of the daily Le Monde.

“Yes, I inspired Obama and his teams copied us,” Royal said in Washington, where she was to be the only French politician of note to take part in Obama’s inauguration later on Tuesday.

In Asia, Thailand’s 81-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej congratulated Obama on his inauguration and sent his wishes for greater “progress and prosperity” for the American people.

“I am pleased to extend to Your Excellency my sincere congratulations and best wishes for your success and happiness as well as for the greater progress and prosperity of the United States of America and her people,” said the king in a congratulatory message to Obama.

Long-standing US ally Japan said that it hopes to build stronger ties with the United States under the new administration, while Obama’s inauguration would provoke changes also in Japan, officials said Tuesday.

“What is most important is that we continue to make the Japan-US alliance a firm one even when there is a change in administration,” said Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone, quoted by Kyodo News Agency. (dpa)

On Thursday, around a dozen flights were delayed for between 45 minutes to an hour, leaving several passengers stranded at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

Passengers were harried and troubled as they waited for their flights.

Expressing anger at the state of affairs, some of the passengers said the strike should be called off immediately.

“Information gathered by me, partly it is because of the shortage in
fuel supply. So, I think, in the interest of the nation, the strikers should re- consider. All of us are stranded and there seems no end to the suspense,” said Kuldeep Nautiyal, a passenger.

“The flight has been delayed by an hour. I don”t know what to do, should I get it (my ticket) refunded or not, I”ll have to just check it out,” said Rashid Akhtar, another passenger.

Employees of India”s state-run oil firms are on an indefinite strike since Wednesday over demands for higher pay and perquisites. Operations at four refineries have been hit by the strike.

The strike has also affected fuel supply to the Indian army as the tankers engaged in supplying fuel to the army bases were reportedly stranded in Ambala .

A large number of petrol tankers with signboards reading ”On Army Duty” stood outside the office of Indian Oil, a state owned oil firm, as their drivers complained of the strike affecting their livelihood.

“We don”t know why the strike has been called. Only the officials can tell us why they are on strike. We are not a part of this strike,” said Sant Singh, a petrol tanker driver.

Petrol pump owners in Ambala also expressed concern about the strike affecting fuel supply in the city.

According to Ravinder Singh Dhillon, a petrol pump owner, they would run dry if the strike continues for another two or three days.

Videogames can be used as powerful tool for education

London, Jan 2 (ANI): Popular online computer games like World of Warcraft and Second Life can be used as a powerful tool for educating children, say scientists.

The researchers believe that these video games can be used to teach science-based subjects where students are able to carry out imaginary experiments and improve their ability to “learn to learn”.

Moreover the “immersive” aspect of the interactive games means that the brain is particularly engaged and can absorb complex issues.

These games can teach students practical skills that can be used in real life.

“Compared with a similar, paper-based curriculum that included laboratory experiences, students overall were more engaged in the immersive interface and learned as much or more,” the Telegraph quoted Professor Chris Dede, an academic in Learning technologies at Harvard University as writing in the journal Science.

Games like Whyville and the ecology game River City have already been developed specifically to teach children.

The researchers suggest that much like “flight simulators” they are so “real” that many life skills can be learned from them.

Dr Merrilea Mayo, director of Future Learning systems at the Kaufman Foundation, said the games can help bridge the gap between under and over-achieving children.

“Unlike lectures, games can be adapted to the pace of the user,” she said.

“Games also simultaneously present information in multiple visual and auditory modes, which capitalises on different learning styles.

“Although the field is still in its embryonic stages, game-based learning has the potential to deliver science and maths education to millions of users simultaneously.

“Unlike other mass-media experiments in education (e.g., TV), games are a highly interactive,” she added. (ANI)

Aussie footballers indulge in riskiest boozing when out of season

Aussie footballers indulge in riskiest boozing when out of seasonMelbourne, Aussie football players indulge in the riskiest drinking outside the football season, reveals a study on drinking patterns of AFL (Australian Football League) players.

The study underlined the fact that the drinking habits of AFL players differ significantly from those of the general population.

This is the first study to put an entire sporting clan under the scanner, and as the researchers claim, the results suggest that there’s a need to apply an entirely different approach to alcohol education for this group.

According to the figures, just 2 percent of AFL players drank at risky levels during the sporting season compared to 15 percent of the general male population.

However, the figure climbed up to 54 percent when the season ended – a period sometimes known as ”mad Monday”.

Associate Professor Paul Dietze, an epidemiologist at the Burnet Institute in Melbourne, said that footballers and the general population differed significantly when it came to drinking patterns.

“What it suggests is that the drinking among players needs to be approached a lot differently than drinking among the general community,” ABC Online quoted Dietz as saying.

He claimed that alcohol education programs for AFL players, would reap the best results when they are run at the end of season

Also, the study revealed that alcohol promotions such as free drink cards also prompted risky alcohol consumption, and players who drank in public were also more likely to drink at risky levels.

Also, the study highlighted that married players or those who reported having outside interests, such as work or study commitments, were not much inclined towards risky drinking.

In fact, membership of certain clubs seemed to reduce the chances of risky drinking among players,

However, researchers found that membership of a players” leadership group did not reduce the risk of excessive drinking.

Professor Dietz says the Australian Football League deserves applause for showing leadership in relation to managing risky alcohol consumption by its players.

But, he said that AFL players should not be held accountable to a higher standard of behaviour when it came to alcohol consumption, because “these players are just normal people who happen to have an elite talent”.

The study was published in the latest edition of the Medical Journal of Australia. (ANI)

Historic blue diamond from India may fetch £10m at Christie’s

Historic blue diamond from India may fetch £10m at Christie’sLondon, A rare blue-grey diamond, which traces its history to India, and had been given to the girl in one of the most famous paintings in Western art, will soon go under the hammer at Christie’s, London.

The Wittelsbach diamond, which apparently originated from the Indian diamond mines, is almost once inch in width.

A Christie’s spokesperson claimed that offering a blue diamond of this type was ”truly extraordinary”.

It was given to Infanta Margarita Teresa by her father King Philip IV of Spain on her engagement to her uncle Leopold I of Austria—one of the most historic events in European history.

According to estimates, the 35.56-carat gem, with a 300-year-old royal history, could raise up to 10million pounds when it goes under the hammer on December 10.

Infanta was a beautiful child with blue eyes and blonde hair, and was the central figure in Las Meninas (1656), the most famous painting by Spaniard Diego Velazquez.

In a political move, she was engaged to Leopold I, who later became the Holy Roman Emperor, and that was when her father gave his 13-year-old daughter the diamond as part of the dowry.

It is believed that the diamond originated from the Indian diamond mines, was passed into the Austrian and then Bavarian crown jewels, and was finally sold into private hands in 1931.

It makes part of the current private collection since 1964.

According to a Christie”s spokesman said “no examples” of coloured diamonds comparable to the Wittelsbach have been put up in an auction before.

“Blue diamonds are rare and to offer a blue diamond of this size, quality, shape and provenance is truly extraordinary.” the Telegraph quoted her as saying.

Francois Curiel, chairman of Christie”s Europe and its international head of jewellery, said: “It is a great honour and a lifetime dream to handle a museum quality stone such as the Wittelsbach.

“The appearance of a large blue diamond, among the rarest of colours, with a history that can be traced back to the 17th century and 300 years of royal connections will surely be a thrilling occasion for all collectors of exceedingly rare jewels and works of art.”
