Iran nuclear weapon is 1-3 years away: U.S.’s Gates

(Reuters) – It could be up to three years before Iran is capable of developing a nuclear weapon, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said on Friday, adding that there was still time for the world to put pressure on Tehran. Asked how long the United States and its allies were prepared to wait for U.N. sanctions on Iran to bite, Gates said:

World

“I think that everybody agrees we have some more time, including the Israelis, and we will just continue to work it.

“Most people believe that the Iranians could not really have any nuclear weapons for at least another year or two. I would say the intelligence estimates range from one to three years.”

Even if Iran got that far, he said having nuclear weapons material was different to full “weaponization” or having a capable delivery system that could threaten neighbors or enemies further afield.

“But clearly them getting to the threshold of having the weapons is what concerns every body.”

I forgive the attacker, says Sri Sri Ravishankar

A day after an attempt was made on his life by an unidentified gunman, spiritual guru Sri Sri Ravishankar on Monday said he was happy with the existing security and has forgiven the attacker, whom the police are yet to identify.

Speaking to the press at his ashram this morning, Ravishankar said, “I heard a loud noise. But I was in my usual calm self. My driver had a premonition that there could be some kind of attack on me”.

The spiritual leader on Sunday escaped a bid on his life when an unidentified gunman shot at his car when he was returning after delivering a discourse.

Ravishankar said, “I do not have enemies. However, whoever has done this, I forgive him. I give him amnesty. I invite him to join our satsang course. I will teach him meditation and Sudarshan Kriya”.

The 54-year-old Art of Living founder said he was happy with the existing security cover, which police stepped up after last evening’s incident.

The shell fired by the fire arm has been recovered, police said.

11 Taliban killed in Afghanistan

Kabul, May 29 (IANS) Afghan forces backed by NATO troops killed 11 Taliban militants, including their commander, during an overnight operation in Afghanistan’s northern Baghlan province, police said Saturday.

‘Afghan troops backed by Special Forces raided a compound in Baba Saqa area last night after intelligence information indicated insurgent activity there, killing 11 enemies including their commander Mullah Jabbar Gujar,’ Xinhua quoted deputy provincial police chief Sayed Jamaludin as saying.

The combined forces had asked the militants to surrender, but they refused to lay down their arms, he said, adding that no civilians were hurt in the operation.

LTTE poses threat to Indian VVIPs

Colombo, May 26 — The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) might be militarily decimated in Sri Lanka but big neighbour India is not taking any chance. It recently extended the ban against LTTE as an “unlawful association” capable even now of jeopardising “VVIP security” and compromising India’s “territorial integrity.” The notification’s mention of LTTE’s goal of creating a “Tamil homeland” is interesting. “And, Whereas, the LTTE’s objective for a separate homeland (Tamil Eelam) for all Tamils threatens the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India, and amounts to cession and secession of a part of the territory of India from the Union,” the gazette notification said. So, it means that the LTTE’s larger goal – at least according to the Indian government which once trained and nurtured the LTTE – was to carve out a separate country for Tamils comprising members of the community from across the shallow waters of the Palk Strait. Intriguingly, it added that while the LTTE remnants look upon the Sri Lankan government as “enemies” they look upon the Indian government as “traitors” – or those who were once trusted but have betrayed that trust.

A political scientist in Colombo said India’s “very specific” fears were not surprising and the extension of the ban was expected.

Russia pursuing independent policy vis-a-vis Iran: Kremlin

Russia is pursuing an independent policy vis-a-vis Iran and its stance on Tehran’s nuclear programme was neither pro-US nor pro-Iranian, according to a top Kremlin official.

Responding to Iranian President Mahmoud Ahemadinejad’s claim that Russia is siding with Tehran’s enemies in the crisis over the Iranian nuclear drive, Kremlin foreign policy aide Sergei Prikhodko said, “Russia is unfailingly guided by its long-term government interests.”

Rejecting Ahmadinejad’s claims Prikhodko said Russia’s position is “specifically Russian, it reflects the interests of all Russia’s people, and therefore can be neither pro-American nor pro-Iranian.”

“Any unpredictability, political extremism, lack of transparency or inconsistency in decision-making…is unacceptable for Russia,” Prikhodko was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

“No one has ever managed to retain their authority through political demagoguery,” Prikhodko added.

Russia is building Iran’s first nuclear power plant in Bushehr city, a facility expected to finally come online in August after a series of delays.

Helen Mirren to play Prospero in big screen version of ‘The Tempest’

London, May 11 (ANI): Dame Helen Mirren will play a female Prospero in a new big screen version of Shakespeare”s ‘The Tempest’.

Director Julie Taymor has changed the gender of the central character to accommodate the British actress in her latest Shakespeare adaptation and has made no apologies for her radical casting choice.

“I wanted to do it because there are actresses like Helen Mirren who never get to play these fantastic parts because they were not written for women,” the Daily Express quoted her as saying.

“Changing the role doesn’t hurt the play, it enhances it,” she added.

The movie, due for release in December, sees the actress playing a scorned woman accused of witchcraft who seeks revenge against her enemies. (ANI)

Pakistan still sees India as major threat, says top US general

Washington, May 8 (IANS) Pakistan still sees India as its major thereat even as it has stepped up action against militants realising the ‘very existential threat’ posed by the Pakistani Taliban and some of its allies, according to a top US general.

‘India is still seen as the major state-based threat,’ General David H. Petraeus, the head of US Central Command who has just returned from a visit to Pakistan said in an interview to Council on Foreign Relations, a Washington think tank.

‘In fact they’ve just completed an exercise, some 50,000 Pakistani military forces, similar to the old NATO exercises that we used to run in the days of the Cold War,’ he noted when asked if he had seen a shift in the Pakistani army’s thinking about its enemies.

‘So there’s no question about the image still in their mind of the threat that is posed by India to their security.’

‘Having said that, the most pressing threat that emerged to their very ‘writ of governance,’ as they term it, came to be seen as that posed by the Pakistani Taliban-again, in particular over the course of the last year or eighteen months,’ Petraeus said.

‘The developments of the last year in Pakistan are significant in that you saw the people, the leaders, and the bulk of the clerics all recognize the very existential threat that was posed by the Pakistani Taliban, the Tehrik-i-Taliban, and some of its allies,’ he said.

The Pakistani Taliban’s claim of responsibility for the failed Times Square bombing also highlights the potential threat ‘between some of these organizations and transnational extremism at large,’ the general said.

Formed in 2007, the Pakistani Taliban has almost exclusively targeted elements of the Pakistani state. But the attack on New York City suggests its ambitions are expanding.

‘There is clearly a symbiotic relationship between all of these different organizations; Al Qaeda, the Pakistani Taliban, the Afghan Taliban, TNSM [Tehreek-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi],’said Petraeus.

He added that it’s not surprising that militants would look to wage attacks on American soil. ‘There are a lot of organizations out there that are wannabe international terrorist organizations,’ he said, ‘because that’s how you garner resources.’

Rooney mansion in care of Gurkha guard

London, May 7 (ANI): Wayne Rooney is leaving his 4.5 million pound mansion under the vigilant eye of a Gurkha as he heads for the World Cup 2010.

Gurkhas are a Nepalese warrior clan known for being lethal and deftly eviscerating enemies with their Khukri or dagger.

An Old Trafford source told The Sun, “The Gurkhas have a formidable reputation. We”ve been told this guy was military decorated. You wouldn”t want to cross him.”

The security man has been provided his own living quarters at the defender’s house and keeps a watch over both the player’s homes in Prestbury, Cheshire.

A string of robberies at the homes of absent Premier League stars where their kin were intimidated led to the hiring of the Gurkha guard.

Victims include United”s Darren Fletcher, 26, whose fiancee had a knife held to her throat. (ANI)

Nixon urges media to leave family in peace

The head of Victoria’s Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority, Christine Nixon, is hoping the media will move their attention away from her family.

Ms Nixon has provided more details about her activities on Black Saturday.

Pressure has been growing on the former police chief commissioner to step down down as head of the authority, after she admitted at the Bushfires Royal Commission that she went out for dinner on Black Saturday.

Ms Nixon has now provided further details of her movements on February 7 last year, contradicting earlier evidence given to the commission.

She now says she also had a haircut and a session with her biographer on that day.

“On the morning of February 7 at 9:30am I had a haircut. It was a recurring appointment, one I could have cancelled. I believed I could carry out my duties as well,” she said.

“I also had a private appointment… to meet with a person who had been working with me on my biography.

“In hindsight I would have done things differently… particularly I would have stayed at the [state emergency] centre that night.”

Ms Nixon is adamant the appointments did not detract from her ability to do her job.

She insists her decision to speak out has less to do with damage control, and is more about protecting her family and bushfire-affected communities.

“I wanted to take this opportunity to provide some details about what I actually did on that day, and hopefully so that approaches that have been made to my family and particularly my elderly parents might stop,” she said.

Ms Nixon has acknowledged there are many people who would like to see her resign, but says she is more determined than ever to stay put.

“I know that what I have is a range of enemies,” she said.

She says whatever she did that day would not have changed the ultimate tragic outcome.

“What I did on that day as chief commissioner will be judged ultimately by the Royal Commission,” she said.

“They are the ones who will hear all the evidence and make a decision when they report about whether or not my behaviours on that day were appropriate.”

Reggie Bush dumped Kim Kardashian ‘over her sex tape’

Sydney, March 30 (ANI): Kim Kardashian was dumped by her American Footballer boyfriend Reggie Bush because of a sex tape featuring the TV star, it has emerged.

Bush was uncomfortable to tie the knot with his long-term model girl friend as the 2007 obscene video of Kim and her then-boyfriend Ray J – made his conservative mother uneasy.

“Reggie”s mom just could not get over the fact that Kim had a sex tape. Reggie and his family are very conservative, and he told Kim that a marriage is never going to happen between them because of the tape,” a source told X17 online.

It is said that Kim is regretting the video as she believes that she still would have been with Reggie, had it not been publicized.

“She”s still crazy about him. If she didn”t have the sex tape, she could have been Mrs. Bush,” the source added.

While the brunette is trying hard to get over the incident, Reggie is thoroughly enjoying his single status.

“Reggie is surrounded by a bunch of his single friends. He wants to be a party guy, hang with the boys and date other people,” a friend said.

Kim, on the other hand, is staying with her sisters Khloe and Kourtney Kardashian in Miami, Florida, and plans to keep up the friendship with her former lover.

“There hasn”t been any communication as of late. But that will change once she gets back to Los Angeles,” an Insider told E! .

“They have a dog together and stuff at each other”s homes. It”s not like they”re enemies. They will work on their friendship, but it will happen very slowly,” The Sydney Morning Herald quoted the source as telling. (ANI)

Israeli nationalist group urges Bar Refaeli to ditch Leonardo DiCaprio

London, March 13 (ANI): Bar Refaeli has been urged by an Israeli nationalist group to ditch her boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio in favour of a Jewish husband.

The supermodel’s affair with the actor has been hitting headlines since the couple began dating in 2005, including speculation leading to their marriage.

An Israeli politician has now penned a letter, sent on behalf of the Lehava organisation, calling for the star to “come to her senses” and not dump her Jewish descent, the Daily Star reported.

Baruch Marzel”s letter read: “It is not by chance that you were born Jewish. Your grandmother and her grandmother did not dream that one of their descendants would one day remove the family”s future generations from the Jewish people. Assimilation has forever been one of the enemies of the Jewish people.”

Marzel added that he “has nothing against Mr DiCaprio, who I have no doubt is a talented actor,” before concluding: “Come to your senses, look forward and back too – and not only the present. Don”t marry Leonardo DiCaprio, don”t harm the future generations.” (ANI)

UK commander says dialogue with Taliban insurgents necessary to end Afghan war

Kabul, Sep 18(ANI): In an ambitious aim to help bring an end to the eight-year war in Afghanistan by persuading the Taliban to lay down their arms, British Army Lt. Gen Sir Graeme Lamb said that many Taliban activists have “done nothing wrong”, rather they have taken to arms as “they have anger and grievances, which have not been addressed”.

While addressing a gathering at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) headquarters in Kabul, Lamb insisted that a dialogue with the Taliban insurgents is necessary to end the cold war.

“We need to take a good look at the people we consider to be our enemies. A lot of young men fighting us have not done anything wrong. They have anger and grievances, which have not been addressed. The better life they expected has not materialized, these are the people we must talk to, but we must make sure we have something to offer them,” The Independent quoted Lamb, as saying.

Lamb further highlighted that the NATO and British forces where not in Afghanistan to give up people’s freedom, and said: “What we do have to do is combine new culture and old culture and work out something that works. We will be listening to what our Afghan colleagues say. I will work very closely with them and let them set conditions.”

Lamb also said that their primary motive is to bring those Afghanistan citizens back into the society, who have been forced out of their society for no fault of their own.

“Judge us by not just what we say, the promises we make, but what we do, what we deliver at the end,” Lamb said. (ANI)

Is Al-Qaida’s central leadership weakening?

London, Sep 11(ANI): Al-Qaida, known for its rigorous training camps for terrorists to carry out attacks around the World, is now undergoing a massive change as tales from six captured Al-Qaida terrorists belonging to immigrant communities in France and Belgium reveals another facet of the organisation.

According to intelligence reports, it is claimed that all the flashy videos shown to prospect recruits were a “trick”, which served a dual purpose -”to intimidate enemies and to attract new recruits” The Guardian reports.

However, the reality had a different picture for them, they had to spent months in Pakistan’s rugged frontier zones and had nothing more than basic small arms training, some physical exercise and religious instruction.

They were also expected to pay around 1,000 dollars for their equipment, weapons and accommodation.

The disappointments for them continued, as they did not get any opportunity to meet supreme head Osama Bin Laden, nor was there any real need for them as fighters in Afghanistan.

Training provided to them involved little live firing and weeks of religious instruction from a junior cleric.

Though the six were forbidden to venture outdoors, one of the six did eventually participate in operations against US forces. (ANI)

Taliban commander says Baitullah alive, wants new TTP chief

Wana, Aug 24 (ANI): Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Baitullah Mehsud wants the Taliban council to choose their new head within THE next five days, according to commander Waliur Rehman.

Talking to a foreign news agency, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) South Waziristan Amir Waliur Rehman said, “We have thousands of suicide attackers, who can destroy their targets anywhere.”

Waliur Rehman added that Baitullah Mehsud is alive; but is seriously ailing.

“Baitullah Mehsud had deputed the organization’s affairs to me two months back,” he said, adding US President Obama and his allies are Taliban’s foremost enemies.

The security forces’ operation in Swat had no effects on Taliban, as they are still present there who moved aside to save the people from any possible damage, The News quoted Waliur Rehman, as saying.

Ruling out any reports regarding the conflicts in Taliban movement, he said: “Our movement is active and effective with no rifts or difference within.”

Waliur Rehman said Taliban has mujahids on all the fronts in South Waziristan for any possible operation there. (ANI)

Pak challenges Taliban to prove Mehsud is still alive

London, Aug. 9 (ANI): Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rehman Malik has challenged the Taliban to prove that their top leaders-Baitullah Mehsud and Hakimullah Mehsud-are still alive.

“If Baitullah Mehsud is alive, or Hakimullah is alive, why don’t they bring out a video. Every telephone has a camera on it. They can just get one out and show people that they are alive. I challenge them,” BBC quoted Malik, as saying.

Malik said that Pakistan’s enemy no. 1 had died in a US missile strike on Wednesday, while his close aide Hakimullah Mehsud was killed in a shootout that broke out on Friday between potential successors.

“The day before yesterday, there was credible information coming from inside the area that Baitullah Mehsud had been killed. This credible information had come right from sources based in South Waziristan, and particularly in Ladha,” he said, adding that officials had non-physical evidence to prove that Mehsud was dead.

Malik said Hakimullah Mehsud and Waliur Rehman, the other leader allegedly involved in the shootout, had long been hostile towards each other.

“They had been fighting in the past and we have information that there has been enmity between Waliur and Hakimullah since they were fighting together in Kurram valley,” he said. “Hakimullah was replaced by Baitullah Mehsud with Waliur.”

The militant group’s spokesmen were also unable to offer any physical evidence to disprove the government’s claims.

The Taliban has accused the interior ministry of making up the incident, but Malik denied such claims.

“Obviously, it is not a story made up by us. This fight must have happened because of the succession,” he added.

On Saturday morning, however, Hakimullah Mehsud told the BBC by telephone that reports of his and Mehsud’s death were “ridiculous”.

“The news regarding our respected chief is propaganda by our enemies. We know what our enemies want to achieve – it’s the joint policy of the ISI [Pakistani intelligence service] and FBI – they want our chief to come out in the open so they can achieve their target,” he said.

He said the Pakistani leader had decided to adopt the tactics of Osama bin Laden and stay silent. He said he would issue a message in the next few days. (ANI)
