Thai govt lifts emergency in more provinces

July 20 (Reuters) – Thailand’s government said on Tuesday it was lifting a state of emergency in three provinces but it would remain in force in others including Bangkok, after being imposed in April to help authorities cope with political unrest.

The government had lifted the emergency in five provinces on July 6 when the initial period came to an end, but extended it for another three months in other areas covering a quarter of the country because it said anti-government elements still posed a threat.

The state of emergency bans political gatherings of more than five people and gives the government powers to censor the media. It also gives broad powers to the security forces, including the right to detain suspects without charge. (Reporting by Pracha Harirasapitak; Editing by Alan Raybould)

UPDATE 1-Salamander Energy says TSL-1X well unsuccessful

LONDON, June 29 (Reuters) – Salamander Energy Plc (SMDR.L), an Asia focussed oil and gas company, said it plugged and abandoned the Tom Su Lua-1X exploration well offshore Vietnam after the well was found to be dry.

The well, in the Vinh Chau Graben system, is the first exploration well in the basin. It encountered high quality reservoir sandstones but no hydrocarbons.

“Although a dry hole, the TSL-1X well confirmed certain elements of the play system in the Vin Chau graben,” said Chief Executive James Menzies.

The firm said in May that it is aiming for average daily production of between 17,000 and 18,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boepd) in 2010 and is planning 11 further exploration and appraisal wells between now and the end of the year. [ID:nLDE6491WM]

“Although disappointing, it should be re-iterated that this is only the first well in a new basin whilst Salamander have several further wells planned in this year’s campaign elsewhere including the high-impact Angklung prospect in Indonesia,” said Oriel Securites analyst Richard Rose on Tuesday.

PML-N leaders sniff ‘third force’ conspiracy

Islamabad, Apr 26(ANI): Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders have expressed their fears about some conspiracy or ‘something extra-constitutional’ being hatched by certain elements belonging to the Army and intelligence agencies.

Raising concerns about the conspiracy, PML-N spokesman and senior leader Ahsan Iqbal has said that a third force wants a clash between the judiciary and parliament.

Iqbal did not name the third force precisely in the same fashion, as Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has repeatedly done in recent months, The News reports.

According to another PML-N leader, the Army is trying to pitch the judiciary against parliament and for this purpose it is using certain elements in the media.

The leader, however, did not have anything concrete to support his argument.

After the recent bloody riots in Abbottabad and Hazara, another PML-N leader had voiced his doubts that some intelligence agencies had played tricks to trigger violence in the area. (ANI)

Father gets life for 3yo’s outback killing

The father of a boy whose body was found down an outback mine shaft has been given a life term in detention.

Three-year-old Imran Zilic was taken by his father Aliya, 34, from the boy’s mother’s home in Perth and driven to outback South Australia in April 2008.

The boy’s body was found at Coober Pedy after a police search across WA, the Northern Territory and SA.

His throat had been cut with a knife.

The father was later taken into custody at Kununurra in WA.

The South Australian Supreme Court has found Aliya Zilic was mentally incompetent at the time of the killing and has ordered that he serve a life term in psychiatric detention.

The court had been told that Zilic had religiously-motivated hallucinations and heard voices telling him how to act.

The prosecution had told the judge Zilic believed his estranged wife was working for the devil and that his son was the devil’s helper.

A psychiatrist gave evidence that Zilic had stopped taking his anti-psychotic medication.

Justice Margaret Nyland ruled that the objective elements of the crime of murder had been met, but the father was mentally incompetent.

OK to be gay – as long as character repents

Filmmakers can depict homosexuals for the first time in Malaysia as long as they repent or even go straight in the end.

Strict censorship rules in the mostly Muslim country mean books and films are routinely banned or have scenes deleted that are deemed detrimental to moral values or religious sensitivities.

The new guidelines reverse a ban on scenes featuring homosexuality, Malaysian Film Producers Association president Ahmad Puad Onah says.

But there is a catch.

“We are now allowed to show these scenes,” he said, “as long as we portray good triumphing over evil and there is a lesson learnt in the film, such as from a gay [character] who turns into a [straight] man.

“Previously we are not allowed to show these at all.”

The new rules, he insists, will allow greater freedom of expression for filmmakers.

But kissing, undressing and obscenity scenes will still be banned.

“We can do almost anything now but we are urged to give due considerations on the film’s impact on certain areas like public order, religion, socio-culture elements and moral values.”

Will Champion baffled by plagiarism accusations against Coldplay

Washington, May 11 (ANI): ‘Coldplay’ drummer Will Champion has revealed that the allegations that his band has stolen melodies from guitarist Joe Satriani and Yusuf Islam have left him baffled.

He emphasizes that the band have not stolen any melodies, and that he finds it unbelievable that Joe and Yusuf are actually contemplating taking a legal action against Coldplay.

“It’s tough when people accuse you of stealing something when you know that you didn’t, Contactmusic quoted Will as telling Hampton Roads.com.

Will further said that the fact that always hit songs were dragged into controversies baffled him even more.

“We accept that it’s part of the territory and know it is only for some reason, God only knows why, the successful songs that seem to be the ones that are accused of being stolen,” he said.

“There are elements of our music that I’ve heard in other people’s music… There are only eight notes in an octave and no one owns them. And there are probably about 12,000 songs that feature the exact same chord progression,” he added.

Joe Satriani recently claimed that the band’s ‘Viva la Vida’ hit ripped off his ‘If I Could Fly’, while Yusuf Islam declared Coldplay used his 1973 song Foreigner Suite for inspiration. (ANI)
