Polling begins for Bihar by-election

Patna, Sept 15 (ANI): Voting has begun for the by-election to 11 of the 18 assembly constituencies in Bihar this morning.

The polling will decide the fate of 99 contestants, including nine women.

The Janata Dal (United) is contesting from Bagha, Nautan, Dhoraiya, Triveniganj, Fulwari, Ghosi, Simri Bakhtiarpur and Munger constituencies while the BJP is from Bodh Gaya, Begusarai and Araria.

The RJD and the LJP has fielded its candidates from Bagha, Nautan, Dhoraiya, Fulwari, Munger, Simri Bakhtiarpur, Ghosi; and Bodh Gaya, Begusarai, Araria and Triveniganj respectively.

The Congress is contesting from all the constituencies.

Around 25,15,474 electors are expected to cast their vote at 2,620 polling stations spread over Bagha, Nautan, Begusarai, Triveniganj, Simri Bakhtiarpur, Araria, Dhoraiya, Munger, Fulwari, Ghosi and Bodh Gaya.

Central paramilitary force personnel have been pressed into service to avoid any kind of untoward incident. (ANI)

Lakshadweep, the smallest constituency gears up for Parliament elections

Lakshadweep Islands, April 2 (ANI): With the country bracing itself for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, Islanders in the smallest Union Territory of India, Lakshadweep Islands, are enthusiastic about participating in the elections beginning on April 16.

Lakshadweep Islands, a cluster of 25 isles scattered in the Arabian Sea, remains the smallest of all constituencies in the country with 44,424 electors after the latest delimitation exercise which has witnessed addition of 43 million new voters in the country.

As per the latest released Government data, Uttar Pradesh with 80 parliamentary constituencies has the highest number of electors that is 116,424,101 while Lakshadweep has only 44,424 electors.

Uttar Pradesh also possesses the largest constituency with Unnao which has 18,97,474 electors while Lakshadweep will remain the smallest constituency.

Lakshadweep is the smallest Union Territory of India. This constituency is reserved for Scheduled Tribes, covering the entire UT of Lakshadweep.

The government, on its part, is all geared up for the poll process with mandatory ID cards and polling booths.
It is hoped that, like previous occasions, it will be a peaceful election, as all the parties maintain self-discipline, says the Collector of Lakshadweep Administration.

Since 1971 till 1999 the islanders sent P.M Sayeed, as the lone Member of Parliament on Indian National Congress’s ticket. But, in 2004, Dr. P. Pookunhikoya of Janata Dal (United) and now Nationalist Congress Party candidate won for the first time from here.

In the present elections, all the major political parties like Congress, NCP, BJP and CPI (M) are in the fray. Their supporters are busy preparing to have a full-fledged campaign.

A tough contest between the Congress and the NCP candidates is being widely anticipated here.

Many Islanders believe that the Congress will swipe this time as late P.M. Sayeed had worked for them and this time his son Hamdulla Sayeed is contesting.

“Only congress has helped us for 37 years and no one has brought so much of development to these Islands. Yes, there is one thing, policemen checking at Kochi Port have caused trouble. We all look forward to see the congress winning here then only we Muslims can get some development”, says Surekha Bevi, an elderly lady from Agatti Island.

Some people feel that the newly entered Communist Party has a chance.

“Our hope is that we can send our MP to work for the public from Communist Party and we will win this election,” said R.M Ismail, a resident of Kavaratti Island and a CPI (M) supporter.

In the forthcoming general elections, the number of electors has increased by 6.4 percent, almost 43 million more, from the last Lok Sabha polls in 2004.

The total eligible voters, 71,42,87,814 will use 10.5 lakh electronic voting machines to exercise their franchise at 8.3 lakh polling stations. By Juhan Samuel (ANI)

Police action injures five seekers of voter identity cards in Kanpur

Kanpur, Apr 1 (ANI): The state police resorted to baton charge to control a huge crowd that had gathered at the Electoral Office in Kanpur.

Around five persons received minor bruises in the police action.

On their part, the police personnel did not detain any person.

The injured persons alleged that they had been standing in a queue for long hours and also that they had been making repeated trips to the Electoral Office to collect their voter identity cards.

Further, they charged the concerned authorities of collecting money from the voter ID cards as fees whereas not even one card was scrutinised, leave alone the issuance.

“They took rupees 50 initially. They clicked our photographs. On three occasions, we have given money but till today the identification paper hasn’t been received by us,” said Masood, a resident.

Voter ID card or Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) is an identification card issued by the Election Commission to all eligible voters, to enable voter identification on the day of polling. (ANI)

Notification issued for 154 Assembly constituencies in AP

New Delhi, Mar 23 (ANI): Election authorities on Monday issued a notification to conduct polls in 154 Assembly constituencies in the North Coastal Andhra and Telangana regions during the first phase of the election.

The authorities have made elaborate arrangements for the filing of nominations by the candidates in these constituencies.

The first phase of the election will be held on April 16.

Over three crore electors will utilize their franchise in the first phase.

The Congress has already announced its candidates for all 42 Lok Sabha and 290 Assembly seats.

Meanwhile, negotiations are underway between the Telugu Desam Party, the Telangana Rashtra Samthi and Left parties for a seat-sharing arrangement in the state.

The BJP has already announced some candidates and the newly formed Praja Rajyam Party is giving final touches to its candidates’ lists. (ANI)

More SC/ST seats in 15th Lok Sabha

New Delhi, Mar 12 (ANI): The 15th Lok Sabha will have 11 more reserved seats for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The number of total seats, however, will remain 543.

The number of constituencies reserved for Scheduled Castes has increased from 79 to 84 after the delimitation of the constituencies.

Likewise, the number of seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes has increased from 41 to 47.

Moreover, the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections will witness an increase of over 4.30 crore voters. Nearly 10.5 lakh electronic voting machines will be used at 8.3 lakh polling stations. These polling stations include 12,901 new ones set up in villages having less than 300 electors.

Uttar Pradesh will have the highest number of electors at over 11.64 crore while Lakshadweep will have lowest number of electors at 44.4 thousand.

Around 1800 observers are likely to keep a stringent watch on the electoral process spread over five phases across the country. (ANI)

Eighty two percent voters to use photo I-cards for Lok Sabha polls

New Delhi, Mar 5 (ANI): For the first time, nearly 82 percent electors will use the Photo identity cards for polling in forthcoming General Elections.

Out of 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, 522 constituencies and the legislative constituencies in Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim and Orissa will go to the polls on the basis of the photo electoral rolls.

Nearly 77 percent eligible voters would have their photographs in the rolls.

Over 90 percent electors have been issued voters cards with photographs in fourteen states and 90 percent electors have their photographs printed in the electoral rolls in thirteen states.

This will facilitate easy identification and prevent impersonation.

The concept of photo electoral roll was introduced in 2005 when it was tested as a pilot project during the revision of rolls in all the constituencies of Kerala and Puducherry, two constituencies of Haryana and in one constituency each in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.

On the successful completion of the pilot project, the subsequent elections to the Legislative Assemblies of Kerala and Puducherry in 2006, the 2007 elections of Himachal Pradesh and the 2008 legislative elections in Meghalaya, Tripura, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Rajasthan and Delhi were also conducted using Photo Electoral Rolls.
