Mayawati slams Congress party’s austerity drive

Lucknow, Sep 18 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has ridiculed Congress party’s austerity drive, terming it as a ploy to steer attention away from the steep price rise.

Addressing a mass rally here on Thursday, Mayawati hit out at the Congress party, calling its austerity drive “a drama.”

“Because of the wrong doings by the Congress government at the centre, the prices are rising due to which poor people across the country are suffering. And now to cover up its weaknesses, they have cut down on its travelling expenses by flying economy class and travelling by train. All this is just a drama,” Mayawati said.

“With a drought looming and elections in some states approaching, the Congress-led government has embarked on a much-publicised austerity drive,” she added.

In a country where the hierarchy of politicians is determined by the size of their bungalows and their convoys, Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi has asked party leaders to give up a fifth of their salaries for drought-relief work, and she flew economy class on a commercial flight to Mumbai to launch the poll campaign.

The finance ministry has appealed for fewer overseas trips with smaller entourages, and a ban on conferences in luxury hotels.

Bharatiya Janata Party and other political parties have criticised the austerity measures in view of the economic downturn and drought-like situation prevailing in the country as a case of ‘tokenism’. (ANI)

Mamata Banerjee lauds Rahul Gandhi’s train ride

New Delhi, Sept 17 (ANI): Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has lauded Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi’s train ride as part of his party’s austerity drive.

Mamata Banerjee, who inaugurated the newly spruced up terminal of New Delhi railway station in the capital along with Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday, lauded the austerity act.

Gandhi travelled in an air-conditioned chair car of the Swarn Shatabdi Express on Tuesday, a day after his mother Sonia Gandhi travelled in an economy class flight from New Delhi to Mumbai.

Rahul travelled from New Delhi to Ludhiana to inaugurate a four-day camp of young Congressmen.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has asked the Congress leaders to observe austerity to cut down expenditure in the wake of draught declared in parts of the country.

Earlier, the Congress Party had decided that its ministers and lawmakers would also take a 20 per cent cut in salaries.

The Congress Party has also urged the government to keep prices of essential commodities in check with special emphasis on oil seeds and pulses. (ANI)

Bharatiya Janata Party criticises austerity drive

New Delhi/Patna, Sept 16 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticised the austerity measures mooted by the Central Government in view of the economic downturn and drought-like situation prevailing in the country.

Addressing the media persons here on Tuesday, spokesperson of the BJP, Rajeev Pratap Rudy, said the austerity drive would not impress the masses.

He said that the government has not cared to check the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities.

“The euphoria of austerity is a suspect. The futile chest beating will not impress a common man who is faced with high prices for food and other essential commodities,” said Rudy.

The BJP was also critical of journeys undertaken by Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi’s travel by train to Punjab on Tuesday.

“We want the Congress family would undertake a journey on Shatabdi in future also. We welcome it. Sonia Gandhi undertook a journey in economy class and we welcome it. But somewhere this has to be studied as to what is the cost that the country is paying for her austerity,” added Rudy.

Meanwhile in Patna, Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav said that the Central Ministers ought to travel by the three-tier sleeper class.

“Journeys should be undertaken in a three-tier bogie of a train, which would lay an impact on the masses that our leaders are following the path of Mahatma Gandhi. They would see that the Congress is taking the austerity drive to meet the financial crisis. This is my advice,” said Lalu. (ANI)

Recollections of a communicator; George Fernandes was a pioneer economy traveler(Article)

New Delhi, Sep 14 (ANI): Much has been written during the last one week about the directions by the Government of India to the Ministers and Congress Members of Parliament to travel economy class during their tour within the country or abroad.

Much also has been made about the ‘directions’ communicated to the Minister of External Affairs S.M. Krishna and Minister of State Shashi Tharoor to shift from their rooms in five star hotels even though they were paying for the rental personally.

The Cabinet Minister who refused to travel first class out of conviction was George Fernandes, the former Minister for Defence. I witnessed it as Information Consultant in the Defence Ministry. In fact it caused me some embarrassment, as I was booked in the Indian Airlines flight in the first class which was my entitlement and to my surprise I saw the Defence Minister, George Fernandes traveling in the economic class during the flight from Delhi to Mumbai.

I quietly went to a person traveling in the economy class to take my seat in the first class and traveled in the economy class. Later, whenever I traveled with George Fernandes I took care to ensure that my booking was done in the economy class.

Last week, I heard the Congress Spokesperson Manish Tewari saying that he was ready to travel even in the cargo compartment.

I recalled that I had to travel in the cargo compartment of a IL-76 of the Indian Air Force from Gauhati to Delhi in 2004 along with George Fernandes. The plane was not pressurized and not one word could be heard by me during the two-hour long flight though I was in the bucket seat along with the Defence Minister.

George Fernandes had visited Tawang a day earlier, saw the monastery and war memorial there, did a survey of the posts keeping a watch on the Chinese border. On return when we were told that the Indian Airlines flight was cancelled, he chose to travel by the IL 76 cargo aircraft, which was on a routine flight, as he had to proceed on an engagement from Delhi.

Incidentally, during his period as Defence Minister, George Fernandes chose to visit Siachen Glacier to see how the Jawans were living there. When he saw that they were not adequately clothed as there were some ‘budgetary problems’, he told the Defence Ministry that the officers concerned should pay a visit to the outposts in Siachen.

In no time, the Jawans got their clothes and snowmobiles in Siachen. From then onwards George Fernandes visited Siachen every three months, as the turnover period there used to be three months and he wanted to meet every contingent who were doing a tenure of duty there. He had visited Siachen 18 times as Defence Minister.

He was insistent on personally going through the conditions in which the soldiers, sailors and airmen lived and worked. He travelled in a Light Combat Aircraft being developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) after subjecting himself to the physical tests that every pilot has to pass through.

It is also not the first time that Cabinet Ministers have been staying in five-star hotels. I recall a former Prime Minister booking scores of rooms in the Maurya to accommodate his family who had come along with him when he was sworn in. They stayed there for weeks and special food was prepared for them to see that they felt at home.

Today the Jumna is in spate. So also the Government departments. One recalls the days when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister. He had an office in South Block with two personal secretaries who took all the dictations and maintained his office. Today, the number of personal secretaries working for a Cabinet Minister is around a score, leave alone the Prime Minister’s Office.

And Home Minister Chidambaram is struggling to persuade his colleagues and senior political leaders to reduce the number of ‘guards’ deployed to ‘protect’ them. His personal example not to have the guards has hardly been emulated by others.

Sonia Gandhi sets an example, flies economy class to Mumbai

New Delhi/Mumbai, Sep.14 (ANI): Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday flew by economy class to Mumbai to attend a rally of party workers and also to hold discussions with the leadership of the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Gandhi’s decision to fly economy class followed a similar act by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and an announcement by External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna that he would be undertaking official trips to Belarus and Turkmenistan.

He has also decided to cut down his delegation from 20 to two members for the trip.

Krishna further said that he would not travel first class in commercial airliners during his official trips.

The decision to fly economy class comes in the wake of Mukherjee’s appeal for a need for ministers and lawmakers to observe austerity in their lifestyle and official functions as the country is facing a crisis caused by drought. (ANI)

Ministers, bureaucrats should travel in economy class: Mukherjee

New Delhi, Sep 11 (ANI): In a clear and firm message Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said on Friday that ministers and bureaucrats who are entitled to travel on state expenses should undertake domestic travel in economy class.

Mukherjee said that they could fly in business class for international travel.

“The austerity measures are not new and have been in the standing instructions of the Finance Committee since 2005, but have not been adhered to till now,” Mukherjee said.

Mean while, according to a report published by the Indian Express that the matter was raised in the Thursday’s cabinet meeting, and several minister’s raised objection to Mukherjee’s suggestion and also sought clarifications.

Mukherjee, also said the Congress will implement a 20 per cent salary cut for its MPs and will request the Speaker to suggest the same to other parties also.

The austerity measures are needed to tide over these recessionary times, Mukherjee said. (ANI)

What air travellers hate most while flying

Melbourne, June 26 (ANI): A survey of Australian travellers has revealed that dirty toilets, overweight passengers and rude flight attendants are among what the passengers hate the most while flying.

The Travel.com.au survey, which involved over 1700 Australian travellers, revealed flight delays as the top air travel grievance.

Other annoyances included chatterboxes, poor passenger hygiene, and reclining seats.

“The days when airplane food was the biggest bugbear of passengers are obviously gone – it didn’t even score a place in the list,” News.com.au quoted Travel.com.au’s general manager Lisa Ferrari as saying.

“Instead, nowadays it seems the biggest flying frustration comes before passengers have even boarded the plane,” she added.

The report further reveals that lack of information about a delayed flight was found to be the most annoying part for passengers.

“As far as I am concerned they can apologise for a delay all they like, but unless you tell me what’s going on and how long it’s going to take to fix it, I’m gonna (sic) get annoyed,” a survey respondent said.

The fourth most frustrating travel experience, according to air travellers, was to sit next to an overweight passenger who encroached on their own seats.

The findings reinforced the findings of a survey conducted by travel.com.au last year, which found 53 per cent of Australians thought obese people should have to purchase two economy class tickets if they couldn’t fit into one.

“Evidently this remains a contentious issue for Australian travellers,” Ferrari said.

She said that she also agreed with the 48 per cent of respondents who were frustrated by people who reclined their seats all the way back on short flights.

“Given that it can severely cut into your already limited seat space, I’d throw my support behind a decision by the airlines to regulate when you can and can’t recline your seats,” she said

“Extenuating circumstances aside, I’m just not sure it’s necessary on an hour flight,” she added.

Australian Travellers’ top 8 Flying Frustrations

1. Flight delays

2. People putting their seats back during short flights

3. Being trapped in your seat by a sleeping passenger

4. Overweight passengers who encroach on your own seat

5. The poor hygiene of fellow passengers

6. Being stuck next to a passenger who won’t stop talking

27 BBC top bosses earn more than the British Prime Minister!

London, June 26 (ANI): The salaries of the BBC’s 50 top-earning managers showed that 27 of them earn more than the British Prime Minister’s 195,000 pounds salary.

The documents showed the BBC’s Director General earns a salary of 647,000 pounds per annum.

Responding to numerous inquiries under the Freedom of Information Act and general calls for greater transparency, the BBC published thousands of claims, SKY News reported.

BBC executives have claimed more than 350,000 pounds in expenses in the last five years, it has been revealed.he claims include more than 2,000 pounds to fly director general Mark Thompson’s family home from their holiday in Italy in the wake of the Andrew Sachs row.

Thompson spent 2,236.90 pounds of licence fee payers’ money to fly his family home from a holiday in Italy when he was forced to cut the trip short as public anger grew over the lewd messages left by Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross on the Fawlty Towers actor’s answering machine

The BBC said the Thompson family was flown economy class and the corporation’s audit committee approved the expense.

In total, Thompson, who earns 647,000 pounds a year, claimed 77,823.35 pounds in expenses over the five years – the most of any BBC executive.

They revealed executives have been spending public money on luxury hotels, vintage champagne, “thank you” dinners, parties and even a private aeroplane.

Jana Bennett, director of BBC Vision, who holds creative control of the corporation’s television output, claimed a total of just less than 60,000 pounds over the period.

Caroline Thomson, the BBC’s chief operating officer, said she was “comfortable” with all of the claims.

Caroline Thomson, who earns 328,000 pounds a year, claimed nearly 5,000 pounds in expenses last year.

The salaries and expenses of the BBC’s top 100 executives and decision-makers will be published, quarterly, from September, Thompson said. (ANI)

New aeroplane seat designs give sleepy travellers more room

Melbourne, June 23 (ANI): Sleep while you fly – that’s the inspiration behind a new range of airplane seats designed by a British designer.

Emil Jacob believes while it isn’t possible to extend the horizontal space in a plane, going vertical might just do the trick for passengers.

The source of inspiration for Jacob, a financial data analyst who also runs Jacob-Innovations LLC, was his own experience trying to sleep in long flights.

“I got the idea for the new designs from my own lack of sleep on long flights,” News.com.au quoted him as saying.

The novel designs involve elevating alternate rows of seats to give passengers more room to lean back in economy class, and the space to lie down in business class, in what Jacob sees as a move that will benefit both travellers and airlines.

He said: “Passengers and airlines will both win from using the new designs which make new space available on planes. Passengers will have more space in each of the various models and airlines will be able to offer better accommodations at better prices.”

Airbus’s communications manager, Mary Anne Greczyn, acknowledged the designer’s effort saying, ” This is the kind of out-of-the-box thinking Airbus really likes to encourage.” (ANI)

Princess Eugenie downs beer with ketchup for Easter bet in Thai bar

London, Apr 14 (ANI): Princess Eugenie, daughter of Prince Andrew and Fergie, was seen dancing on tables after she downed beer with ketchup for an Easter bet with pals during a wild night in Thailand.

The 19-year-old Royal partied at the trendy Lizard Lounge club near Surin Beach in Phuket, where she is on a gap-year jaunt.

“The Princess was with a couple of girls and a guy. One of her friends squirted some ketchup into a glass of beer and challenged her to drink it. They all fell about laughing as Eugenie swigged it,” the Sun quoted an onlooker as saying.

It is believed that Eugenie, the sixth in line to the throne, is staying at a 10 pounds-a-night backpacker hostel after flying out economy class.

And while the princess let her hair down, her two Met police protection officers-who apparently flew down via business class-sipped mineral water at the bar. (ANI)

Last VVIP flight by `Tanjore’

Onboard Air India One, Mar.31 (ANI): As Prime Minister Manmohan Singh boards the last commercial jet commissioned by Air India for VVIP flights, one can’t help but get nostalgic.

Called Air India 001, this is just another Boeing 737-400 operated by the national carrier. The 20-year-old aircraft is modified whenever the Prime Minister or President travel overseas.
The Prime Minister has a small cabin to himself which has a double bed, a table and some chairs. It is also equipped with office facilities.

The official delegation comprising of his staff, officials, security detail, reporters are seated in the business and economy class. The aircraft also carries a huge amount of cargo which includes communication and security related equipment as well as catering goods.
But, all this will soon be history. After the Prime Minister returns from the G-20 summit on Friday (April 3), this aircraft will go back into commercial service.

The Prime Minister and President will hence forth use three special jets bought from the United States at a cost of Rs.734 crores.

These latest aircraft of the Boeing 737 series are equipped with Self Protection Suites (SPS) for electronic warfare integrated onto the aircraft to provide greater security from enemy missiles.

SPS include radar warning receivers, missile-approach warning systems and counter-measure systems. The aircraft would have the capability to shoot metal chaff and flares to deviate radar-guided missiles and heat-seeking missiles off the track.

The first of the three jets landed in India in August last year, with the other two following subsequently. Since then, the aircraft have undergone extensive flight trials and the crew has been trained for handling the IAF’s latest induction.
To be named ‘Rajdoot’ after the first set of Tu-124s used by the squadron for VIP in 1970, the new Boeing Business Jets (BBJs) are fitted with the fuel-efficient CFM-56 engines from US General Electric and French Snecma, and can cover a range of 6,000 nautical miles or 11,000 km.
However, it will not be the Prime Minister’s prerogative to be the first user of these aircraft. President Pratibha Patil will first be flown on the inaugural flight of Indian Air Force’s Boeing Business Jets from the Palam Air Force base on April 1. She will also be flying to Poland and Spain. Later in April, the Prime Minister would probably use the BBJs to crisscross the country while campaigning for a second term. By Smita Prakash (ANI)
