China lifts ban on Internet services of Xianjiang after ten months

Urumqi (China), May 14 (ANI): Believe it or not, it took China ten months to restore Internet services in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The reason given by the authorities was the instability that prevailed in the area after a riot broke out.

Xinjiang dwellers now feel that this restoration of the Internet signals a reinstatement of the State’s confidence in the social stability of the region.

The move comes as a relief for the seven million Netizens inhabiting the region, as it will end their virtual isolation.

Authorities had banned the Internet after it was discovered that separatists and rabble-rousers had used the Internet, phone calls and text messages to spread havoc.

In a document released by its press office, Xinjiang”s regional government said Internet services were “fully resumed,” meaning netizens in Xinjiang were able to browse the web, chat online and put up postings again, Xinhua reports.

Resumption of Internet services was in line with maintaining stability and boosting social and economic development in Xinjiang, as well as the residents having access to information, the document said. (ANI)

Chakhesang tribe of Nagaland celebrates Tsükhenye festival

Dimarpur (Nagaland), May 13 (ANI): Members of Nagaland’s Chakhesang tribe recently celebrated Tsukhenye festival to mark the beginning of a new agriculture cycle.

Thousands of Chakhesangs gathered at the Dimarpur Stadium to participate in the `Tsukhenye’ celebrations, themed `Unity our strength’.

Organised by Chakhesang Hoho, Dimapur, the festival’s main attractions were indigenous folk songs, dances, wrestling, and a dress-exhibition.

The five-day festival is also underlined the need to celebrate youth, reward the righteous and punish the wrongdoers.

Chakhesang tribe has two main dialects — `Chokri’ and `Kuzhale’. Interaction at the festival sought the use of dialects for bringing the community together.

“Through this kind of festivals, we come together and strengthen unity. Division will only weaken us. . Through these kinds of festivals, we encourage youthfulness and vitality and convey the message that by working together we can do lots of things,” said S.K.Kenye, a participant.

“By coming together like this we learn to live with others. We are enjoying it,” said Medo, another participant during the festival.

The Chakhesang tribe believes in living in harmony, which they believe will lead to peace, prosperity and progress.

“The infrastructural development and economic development are important. All this cannot happen, if there is no peace, unity and harmony. So far, I think, there is total peace in the valley,” said Kuzholezo Nienu, Health and Family Welfare minister, Nagaland

Festivals like `Tsükhenye’ not only help in upholding India’s indigenous culture, but also spread the message of unity and brotherhood among all. (ANI)

Granite Belt produces new plum

A new type of plum that has been grown for added nutrition will soon make its way onto tables.

The Queensland Government and a private company will sell the Queen Garnet Plum and turn it into nutritional drinks.

The plum was developed at research stations on the Granite Belt and is high in anti-oxidants.

Dr Roger Stanley from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation says the plum will be exported all year round.

“As a processed fruit you can process it at peak condition and sell the extract for 12 months of the year and indeed export the extract so that it can be sold into the marketplace and advertising to promote the health properties,” he said.

Recovery team aids flood-hit community

The State Government has sent a recovery team to Burketown in north-west Queensland’s Gulf country to help in the flood clean-up effort.

The Albert River at Burketown peaked at a record level earlier this week and floodwaters have isolated the community.

Emergency Management Queensland spokesman Bruce Grady will lead the team, which includes representatives from the Department of Main Roads and Economic Development.

Mr Grady says they will be consulting residents about what assistance is needed.

“So is there anything that the community needs from an economic perspective, what does that community need to get their economy up and running again, issues with infrastructure, principally around the roads network up there and if we have any we are also likely to deal with any environmental issues,” he said.

Meanwhile, Telstra says floodwaters have inundated telecommunications equipment in the Gulf and has affected phone lines.

Some residents in the region say they have been without a proper phone connection for almost a month.

Telstra spokesman Wally Donaldson says it is trying to access those properties but that continues to be difficult.

“Unfortunately it is a harsh environment and when you get that much rain, cyclones, the ongoing wet season, it’s a really difficult environment for any sort of electronics, so … we’re always looking at what we do, we put more optical fibre in to make our telephone exchanges much more robust and reliable,” he said.

Washington, Mar. 22 (ANI): US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrooke has said that the Pak-US strategic dialogue on Wednesday would “mark a major intensification of our partnership.”

Tiwi jobs dream dashed by funding knock-back

A plan to create hundreds of jobs on the Tiwi Islands and resurrect the collapsed Great Southern plantations project has been scuttled by a funding knock-back.

The Tiwi Land Council’s Andrew Tipungwuti says the Tiwi Islands have asked for funding from the Aboriginal Benefits Account to keep thirty workers to maintain the plantation over the next four years.

He says the funds would also have been used to hire an extra 180 local workers to harvest trees.

He says the Tiwi people are disappointed the Indigenous Affairs Minister, Jenny Macklin, has not stepped in.

“We’re trying to secure the lives of the Tiwis but unfortunately it didn’t fall in our favour,” he said.

“Maybe the minister thinking that economic development isn’t such a good thing on Aboriginal communities.

“We’ve just been told the funding has been declined by the minister, there has been no apparent reason for it.

“Overall it’s just disappointing.”

A media release from Ms Macklin’s office said the Tiwi Plantations Corporation had asked for funding while they sought private investment but the commercial risks involved in the forestry project were substantial and best left to the private sector to assess and manage.

Graziers to get flood help online

The Queensland Government has organised an online flood assistance forum today for primary producers who cannot get off their properties to access information about help.

The web conference will involve speakers from the Queensland Rural Adjustment Authority, the Department of Communities and the Rural Financial Counselling Service.

Alex Stirton from the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation says people can use their home computer and telephone to interact with speakers.

“We realise that a lot of producers probably aren’t able to leave home due to the floods, so we thought it was a good chance to get what information there is to producers as far as assistance from the recent floods,” he said.

“This is the first [online seminar] we’ve run for a natural disaster.”

Mr Stirton says the seminar is easy to use.

“It is an interactive seminar so producers can participate from their own homes,” he said.

“Producers register for the ‘webinar’ and receive an invite.

“They have to dial in over the telephone and it is done across the computer – so the audio is over the telephone and they watch the computer screen as the presenters go through their presentation.”

Timber workers want support for FEA

Timber workers have criticised the Tasmanian Government for failing to prop up ailing timber company Forest Enterprises Australia (FEA).

FEA’s four cent shares have been suspended for two weeks, with the company struggling to re-organise its debt of $216-million.

FEA has told the stock exchange its request for financial assistance had been rejected, but thanked the Government for its efforts.

The Economic Development Minister Michael Aird says the government is continuing to work with FEA, and will consider support for workers.

Barry Chipman from Timber Communities Australia says that is not good enough.

“Timber Communities Australia would hope that the government can review that decision because Forest Enterprises Australia is a vitally important company to Tasmania’s economy and it provides employment for regional communities throughout Tasmania, and while there’s still life there’s hope,” he said.

Mr Chipman says the government has propped up many companies and FEA should be no different.

“With the problems that our dairy industry was confronted with only last year and the drought assistance that’s been provided to the farming community and we would hope that whoever is the new government after the election next weekend can look very closely at doing whatever it can to assist this Tasmanian company.”

FEA lifeline denied

The troubled Tasmanian timber company Forest Enterprises Australia (FEA) has suffered another blow.

FEA has told the Stock Exchange its request to the Tasmanian Government for financial support has been rejected, and it will now ask its financiers for help, so it can restructure.

The economic development minister Michael Aird says the government continues to work cooperatively with FEA, and it will support workers who may be affected by any future developments.

Mr Aird says under caretaker conventions, he has kept the Opposition fully informed.

US to ensure ‘highest standards of accountability’ for Pak aid : US official

Islamabad, Aug.29 (ANI): The United States would like to ensure the ‘highest standards of accountability’ in utilization of aid being provided to Pakistan by the Obama administration in order to make sure that the funds are being utilized exactly for the purpose it is allotted for, a top US official has said.

Interacting with media persons at the US embassy here, the US Coordinator for Economic Development and Assistance to Pakistan, Robin Raphael, said ensuring transparency in the utilization of assistance would be a key benchmark.

“We want to ensure highest standards of accountability. We want to be clear where the money is going and how it is going,” The Daily Times quoted Raphael, as saying.

Commenting on the huge amount of administrative costs which is likely to be incurred, Raphael said every effort would be made to minimize the high intermediation charges.

She, however, highlighted that Washington would need foreign technical expertise in certain areas while working to lower the administrative costs.

According to an estimate, Pakistan would receive only the half of the actual monetary assistance promised by the United States, as a huge amount of money is likely to be deducted for administrative costs.

Commenting on the increasing energy needs of Pakistan, Raphael said US is considering investing hugely in the energy sector, including hydel power generation, to help the county overcome its energy crisis.

When asked about the reconstruction opportunity zones (ROZs) programme, she said America was also working to expand the area for ROZs, which were previously planned only for the war ravaged Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). (ANI)
