Briton jailed for life for killing NRI business partner

In a widely followed case, a British solicitor has been jailed for life for arranging the contract killing of his NRI business partner to claim 1.5 million pounds insurance to pay off his debts.

John Cort, a solicitor in the east Midlands town of Leicester, hired Brain Farrell, a hit-man from Bayswater in west London, to kill 51-year-old Vina Patel.

The body of Patel was found at the bottom of the stairs at the office of Cort and Co solicitors on 15 January 2009. Cort tried to make the death look like an accident.

Cort and Patel were business partners in the company.

54-year-old Cort and Farrell, 37, were found guilty of killing Patel and were sentenced to life imprisonment.

The Nottingham Crown Court yesterday sentenced Cort to a life term with a minimum term of 29 years while Farrell has been jailed for a minimum term of 27 years.

Justice Linda Dobbs at Nottingham crown court ruled that the murder was “premeditated, calculated and ruthless”.

“You deprived the family and friends of Vina Patel of a cherished person. That you, Mr Cort, were able to have murdered a close friend of 30 years, erstwhile lover of 20 years and partner prepared to help you with your divorce, reveals your true character. You are a controlling person who will stop at nothing to achieve your aims. You were the driving force behind the murder,” Dobbs said.

Patel suffered a broken neck as well as other injuries. The court evidence suggested she had either fallen because she was being attacked or had been attacked then her body arranged to make it look like an accident.

Surendra Patel, the husband of the deceased, said after the verdict: “We wanted justice for Vina, this is it. The man (Cort) is completely callous, there was no reaction at all. I think he is the devil. If you ever want to meet the devil, he is it.”

The court was told that Cort “lived a life he simply could not afford” and had 171,000 pounds of debt.

Weeks before Patel’s death, Cort had persuaded her they should increase their life assurance cover from 500,000 to 1.5 million pounds, claiming he had a serious illness.

The life insurance policy had been taken out by Cort and Patel to protect the company in case of the death of either partner.

Besides, more than 650,000 pounds went missing from the company’s client account, which should have been paid to customers or mortgage lenders.

The company was investigated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) after Cort’s arrest.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Redfern said although Patel’s death originally looked like an accident, thorough examination of the scene and an expert post-mortem examination led to an investigation which identified Cort and Farrell as those responsible for her death.

Robin Hood’s prison under Nottingham city to be scanned with laser

London, April 24 (ANI): A dungeon that is believed to have been Robin Hood’s prison after he was captured by the Sheriff of Nottingham, is to be surveyed using a laser.

Robin Hood is believed to have been held captive in an oubliette (underground dungeon) located at what is now the Galleries of Justice.

The Nottingham Caves Survey is being conducted by archaeologists based at the University of Nottingham, and is part of a major project to explore every cave in Nottingham.

The Greater Nottingham Partnership, East Midlands Development Agency, English Heritage, the University of Nottingham and Nottingham City Council funded the two-year project, which cost 250,000 pounds.

Experts from Trent and Peak Archaeology will use a 3D laser scanner to produce a three dimensional record of more than 450 sandstone caves around Nottingham from which a virtual representation can be made.

David Knight, Head of Research at the Trent and Peak unit, said there will be no actual excavations just the use of the laser.

“The aim is to increase the tourist potential of these sites. The scanning will also make them visible ‘virtually’ which is good in terms of public access because a lot of them are health hazards,” the BBC quoted him as saying.

“That’s one of the problems with these caves – they’re very impressive but access is fairly difficult. You can imagine the health and safety issues are quite significant,” he said.

The last major survey of Nottingham’s caves was in the 1980s. The British Geological Survey (BGS) documented all known caves under the city. (ANI)

Indian-origin taxi driver attacked by passengers in UK

LONDON: An Indian-origin taxi driver in east Midlands town of Leicester has suffered injuries and lost his vehicle during an unprovoked attack by two passengers while he was dropping them off at night.

Bharat Upadhay, 48, who has been driving the taxi for the last four months, said he suffered cuts and bruises to his face and neck after a man and a woman attacked him as he dropped them off in Braunstone Frith, Leicester on Saturday.

“The man asked me to stop and I had just told him how much the fare was when suddenly I felt a rope around my neck. He held the rope so tight I thought I was suffocating. Then the woman pulled out a knife and tried to stab me,” Upadhyay, who feared for his life during the attack, said, adding he was terrified.

“I thought I was going to die. It was really scary but I need this job as it is my bread and butter. I am worried about going out at night again after what happened,” he said.

Reports from Leicester said Upadhay had managed to free himself from the rope but the man then grabbed him, holding his head against the head rest while the woman began punching his head and face.

He eventually slipped free of the man’s grip and got out of the car. But he was again confronted and forced to hand over his wallet before he was able to run off. When he returned to the scene, he said his taxi had disappeared.

Upadhay said “Taxi drivers were attacked too often and something needs to be done. I was lucky this time.”

Brits miss 64 million workdays a year because of allergies

London, June 23 (ANI): Britons skip 64 million workdays in a year because of allergies, according to a new study.

The findings have revealed that people in cities suffer most with allergic reactions, suggesting higher levels of pollution and toxins and less chance to build up immunities.ut researchers have observed that many people do not bother to treat their allergies constantly.

For example those who suffer every summer, forget to renew their prescriptions until they are affected, rather than do it as prevention.

The study by website TheChemist.co.uk has revealed that 16 per cent of adults in London have missed five days or more of work in the past year because of their allergies.

The research, which surveyed 1,000 adults, revealed that across Britain, one in five workers has taken time off for some allergy, the equivalent of 245,000 on any single working day.

It was found that, men were more prone than women to react to an allergy, taking an average of 2.43 days a year off sick compared to just 0.85 days a year for the average female.

Nearly one in five of all men has missed five days a year or more in a single year, compared to a mere four per cent of women.

“Allergies are seen by many people as minor ailments, especially those who don’t suffer from them,” the Telegraph quoted Mike Rudin, managing director of TheChemist.co.uk, as saying.

“They can be very debilitating for sufferers, and our research shows just how much this can affect people’s working lives, and therefore the economy,” he said.

He added: “People lead very busy lives nowadays which often cause them to neglect the treatment of their allergies, despite the fact that they might need the same medication every year.”

Percentage of adults who have taken more than five days off work in the past 12 months because of allergies:

London 16.6 per cent

West Midlands 9.6

North West 5.5

South West 5.4

Scotland 5.3

East Midlands 5.0

South East 4.6

Yorks/Humber 4.6

Wales 4.4

East Anglia 3.8

North East 2.9

Northern Ireland 2.4 (ANI)

Ponting says he loves Leicester

London, June 23 (ANI): Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has said that he loves Leicester, where his team has been based after their early exit from the Twenty20 World Cup.

The skipper further said that Australian players are perfectly prepared for their Ashes tour.

Ponting and his team spent a week in the East Midlands city after their shock early exit. The Australians have been based in Leicester for a 12-day training camp and their captain admits they are desperate to play a competitive game again, even though the fact that it is now 12-a-side means the fixture has lost its first class status.

“Some of my comments about Leicester were taken the wrong way. There weren’t any positives about us going to Leicester because it meant we were out of the tournament early – it was nothing to do with the place,” The Sun quoted Ponting, as saying.

“But we got the best practice facilities we could have hoped for and the nets were great,” he added.

Australia begin their tour tomorrow with a four-day match against Sussex. And Ponting said: “There is a lot of excitement.” (ANI)

Tevez can break free from owners to stay at Man U

London, May 15 (ANI): Chris Heaton-Harris, president of the EU’s powerful Sports Intergroup, which deals with sporting matters across the continent, has said that Carlos Tevez can break free from his owners and stay at Manchester United.

United are refusing to pay 26million pound fee demanded by a consortium led by Kia Joorabchian, who owns Tevez, as the row over Tevez’s future intensified and the European Parliament prepared to get involved.

East Midlands MEP Heaton-Harris is an influential figure in Brussels on sports issues and admitted he has been shocked by the Tevez saga, The Sun reports.

“It is unique and bizarre that an entity, rather than a club, owns a player. In employment terms, Carlos Tevez has a contract himself with this company. But if he went to the European Commission and said he wanted out of it, he would get European support,” Harris said.

“It is just an employment contract. You can’t keep a person to a contract that he doesn’t want to continue in. Under European law, he has the right to break this contract,” he added.

There is, of course, no evidence that Tevez wants to break from his owners or Joorabchian, who is also his adviser. They agreed a loan deal with United two years ago. It had the proviso that, if United wanted to keep the player, they would have to pay 26 million pound for him.

United have not exercised that option, so Joorabchian and his consortium say that it is time to look elsewhere.

Sources close to the player insist he does not want to stay at the club and that he is happy for his ‘owners’ to decide what his future should be.

But United boss Alex Ferguson disputed this on Wednesday night, insisting Tevez wanted to remain and the club had made him a new offer. (ANI)

Barack Obama’s half-brother was denied entry to Britain

London, April 12 (IANS) Samson Obama, a half-brother of US President Barack Obama, was denied entry into Britain because he had been accused of sexual assault on a previous visit, a newspaper reported.

Samson Obama was stopped by immigration officers when he tried to enter Britain at East Midlands Airport en route from Kenya to his half-brother’s presidential inauguration ceremony in January.

Using biometric tests, immigration officers discovered that he was linked to a serious crime in Britain last November, according to the News of the World.

At the time Samson, who runs a mobile phone shop outside Nairobi, was arrested by police in Berkshire county for an alleged attempted sexual assault on a group of teenage girls.

Although he was not charged, his details were stored on the British home ministry’s biometric database.

The White House was informed about Samson Obama, one of President Obama’s 11 half brothers and sisters by his father, Barack Obama Senior, who had children by four women.

Samson Obama’s mother Kezia, 67, lives in the town of Bracknell, Berkshire, in southeast England.

A Home Office source told the newspaper: ‘This was obviously an extremely sensitive issue when it was flashed up by the database.

‘But the system is designed to flag up people who have come to the attention of the police in the UK and are then trying to return.’

He was refused a visa and flew on to the United States on a connecting flight.

Reports: Obama’s half-brother refused entry into Britain

London – Britain refused an entry visa for US President Barack Obama’s half-brother, Samson Obama, who was implicated in alleged sexual assault in Britain and a false document attached to his statement, British media reported Sunday. Samson, a Kenyan, was stopped and turned back by immigration officials at the East Midlands Airport in January while en route to Washington for Barack Obama’s inauguration, the Press Association reported.

The news agency cited a Home Office spokesman as confirming that the visa was refused after immigration officers noticed a falsified document included in Samson Obama’s visa application.

Further inquiries then showed he had been arrested by police in Berkshire after an alleged sex attack on a girl around the time of his last stay in Britain last November but not charged, according to the News of the World reported.

Obama’s brother refused UK visa after ‘sex assault on young girls’

London, April 12 (ANI): Barack Obama’s half brother was denied UK visa after being accused of sexually assaulting a group of young girls in Berkshire last November.

Samson Obama was headed for Washington via Britain to attend the historic inauguration that saw his brother become the US President in January.

But he came under the scanner of immigration officials at East Midlands Airport when the hi-tech database revealed Samson had been taken into custody by Brit cops after trying to sexually attack a group of young girls, including a 13 year-old.

He was later fingerprinted and not charged before leaving the country but not without providing his details, which were recorded on the Home Office’s new database of prints and biometric details.
It was alleged that it was this “sensitive issue” that came into light as he tried to step in to the British borders to pay a visit to his relatives while on his way for the swearing-in ceremony.

“This was obviously an extremely sensitive issue when it was flashed up by the database,” News of the World quoted a Home Office source as saying.

“But the system is designed to flag up people who have come to the attention of the police in the UK and are then trying to return,” the source added.

A Home Office spokesman confirmed Samson, one of the President’s 11 half brothers and sisters by his father who had four partners, was stopped from entering the country after immigration officers detected a false document with his visa application.
Samson was believed to have reached Washington through a connecting flight from East Midlands to the US. (ANI)

Sacked Lankan origin postman says he has no regrets over his ‘English-only’ stand

London, Mar. 27 (ANI): A Sri Lankan-origin postmaster, who refused to serve non-English speaking customers and was sacked, has said he has no regret over the stand he took.

Bosses of Deva Kumarasiri, 40, told him that his “services were no longer needed”.

The decision has sparked fury among Deva’s supporters. Deva declares: “I believe what I did was right. I don’t regret it.”

Deva had asked his employment agency for a transfer following threats from local Muslims. He was moved to the city’s predominantly white Netherfield area, and fours days later he was given the boot.

“The agency gave no reason, but it’s safe to say my stand has cost me my livelihood. I’ve a wife, two daughters and a mortgage to support. Because I’ve no contract, I was effectively self-employed, so have no rights,” he said.

Deva, who came to the UK 18 years ago, added: “Anyone who doesn’t make an effort to learn English doesn’t want to integrate. If people come to live in this country they should fully embrace British culture.”

Now, he has had thousands of messages of support to his website, www.britishnessforever.co.uk

“I must have struck a chord with the nation. The vast, vast majority of people agree with my stance,” he said.

His employers, Bradford-based Newrose Personnel Ltd, declined to comment. So did Royal Mail.

But Derek Clark, UKIP Euro MP for the East Midlands, said: “It’s a disgrace. He hasn’t misbehaved, or been short-changing customers. He was simply trying to help these people fit in. I’m very angry for him.”

Deva, who flies the Union Flag at his house and drives a British-built Land Rover, now hopes to buy his own post office

“I would still refuse to serve non-English speaking customers. I’m passionate about Britain,” he said. (ANI)

UK survey says simple pleasures can provide the antidote to recession

London, Mar.19 (ANI): People in the UK are turning to simple pleasures, such as spending time in beautiful surroundings, to get them through the gloom of the recession, figures from the National Trust show today.

Faced with a barrage of bad news about the economy, and the need to find ways to make their money go further, more and more people are turning to buildings and gardens such as those owned by The National Trust.

In fact, helped by the good weather and that several properties are opening earlier in response to demand, visitor numbers to the Trust’s properties rose 50 per cent during February half term this year, compared with last – with some historic houses seeing as many as four times the number of visitors throughout February 2009, against the same month last year.

According to the poll, a staggering 84 per cent admit that simple pleasures, such as a day out near home, would be more important to them this year than ever before.

The survey of 2,000 people, carried out by The National Trust, asked what kinds of days out appealed most and found that 64 per cent said a walk in the park, a similar number chose to visit either a historic house or beautiful garden, while 36 per cent opted to visit a museum or gallery.

The quick but more costly thrills offered by theme parks and sporting events were both markedly less popular, being selected by only 26 per cent and 13 per cent respectively.

And, despite living in a society where more than 55 per cent of people acknowledge there is less beauty than there once was, 90 per cent want their days out to be in beautiful places.

Fiona Reynolds, Director General of the National Trust, said: “We all need quality time to relax and recharge our batteries, whether in a recession or not.

“Getting away from it all and spending a day with family and friends in beautiful surroundings is becoming essential to help ease away the stresses and strains. And contact with nature and history clearly provides what people need,” she added.

The desire to ensure that leisure time is well spent seems to be strongest in the East Midlands, where visitor numbers across all the area’s National Trust properties rose by 137 per cent.

The North West of England saw a rise of 91 per cent across all its properties, while visitors to sites in Northern Ireland rose 68 per cent. Croome Park in the West Midlands has seen the most dramatic rise for an individual property, with more than four times the number of people visiting this February compared with last year. Calke Abbey, near Derby, saw an increase of 225 per cent, while Ham House – where parts of the film The Young Victoria were filmed – saw a rise of 118 per cent.
