PM to address National Conference of Ministers of Environment and Forests today

New Delhi, Aug 18 (ANI): For a comprehensive stock taking of the implementation of policies and programmes concerning protection of environment, forests and wildlife, the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has convened a National Conference of the Ministers of Environment and Forests of all the States and Union Territories here today.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will deliver the inaugural address.

Union Minister of state (Independent charge) Jairam Ramesh, Secretaries of Environment and Forests from all states, Chairman of Central Pollution Control board, Chairman of State Pollution Control Board, Principal Chief Conservators of Forests, Chief Wildlife Wardens, Members, Planning Commission, Chief Ministers, Secretaries, Government of India, Dr R K Pachauri, Director General, TERI, India, NGOs will participate in the conference.

The conference assumes significance in the context of the emerging and continuing challenges in respect of protection of environment, forests and wildlife.

The conference seeks to forge enhanced synergies between the efforts of the Central and State Governments for effective implementation of policies and programmes in this regard.

The conference will deliberate on several items.

They are i. Monitoring compliance with environmental and forestry related laws and regulations and road map for institution building;

ii.River cleaning – innovative models and enhanced co-ordination among the centre, states and local bodies;

iii. Strategies for increasing forest cover and enhancing synergies between Green India Mission, National Afforestation Programme and CAMPA Funds;

iv. Strengthening of State Forest Departments and Capacity Building of Forest Officials;

v. Protection of forests in the context of the implementation of Scheduled Tribes and other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forests Rights) Act, 2006;

vi. Wildlife management including Tiger Conservation and issues related to Man-Animal conflict. (ANI)

Orissa Government to strengthen tribals land rights

Bhubaneshwar June 24(ANI): The Orissa government has decided to bring amendments to Orissa Scheduled Tribe and Traditional Dwellers Act, 2006, to pave way for tribals to continue in the land occupied by them.

The Government has so far identified about 20,000 tribals who are traditional forest dwellers but hold no land rights.

This announcement came after the Chief Minister Navin Patnaik’s visit to the areas of the trouble hit Narayanpatna in Korapat district.

Today’s decision of the Orissa government is significant as, thousands of activists of Maoists backed tribal outfit Chasi Muliya Adivasi Sangh (CMAS) led by Nachika Linga, forcibly occupied nearly 800acres of agricultural land belonging to non-tribals across Narayanpatna block, earlier this month.

To counter the Maoist from taking an advantage of the situation Chief Minister Patanaik instructed the Revenue, the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes Development Departments to ensure that not an inch of tribal land should not be remained in possession of non-tribals.

The Orissa Government has also decided to strictly enforce laws under the land reforms act and tribal laws to give justice to the tribal population of the sate and to launch awareness drive to educate tribals about their rights.

Revenue Minister S N Patro said the Governemnt has decided to rovide legal assistance to the tribals who are not in a position o fight out their cases and if necessary it will bear all the legal expenses. (ANI)

Patna court to hear “Slumdog Millionaire” case

Patna, Feb 24 (ANI): A court in Patna will today hear a case filed against “Slumdog Millionaire”, in which the petitioner has charged that the title is offensive and derogatory.

On February 18, the court had postponed the hearing till today.

The petition has been filed against music director A R Rahman, actor Anil Kapoor and other Indians associated with the film.

“We have not filed a case that will cause massive harm to the makers of the film. The truth is that we have been hearing “dog” for quite some time and we have raised objection against the same,” said Shruti Singh, advocate for the petitioner.

Tapeshwar Vishwakarma, General Secretary of Slum Dwellers’ Joint Action Committee said that the title of the film is an insult to the people residing in slums.

Vishwakarma expressed his disgust at the society that is regaling over the title of the movie just because the film happens to be a nomination for the Oscar Awards and not looking at what he called the Indians insulting fellow Indians.

Irrespective of the controversy, “Slumdog Millionaire” has won critical acclaim both in and outside India. (ANI)

PM lays foundation stone of elevated road from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal

Chennai, Jan 8 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today laid the foundation stone for the elevated road from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal here today.

“This project is one more important milestone in the ambitious road programme of the government that will transform the country”s transport sector, give a boost to industry and integrate the economy,” said Dr. Singh.

“The country needs world-class road infrastructure; world class public transport systems and world class ports and railways. The government is working sincerely to deliver these high quality communication networks within a reasonable time frame,” he added.

Speaking about the project, Dr. Singh said that the elevated road in Chennai is aimed at quick and continuous dispersal of freight in to and out of Chennai Port to other parts of the country via the GQ corridor.

“Spanning a total length of 19 kms, it is the longest elevated corridor project in the country,” he said.

He said another aspect of this project is that about 12,000 families of the weaker sections especially the slum dwellers are going to be rehabilitated by providing alternative shelters.

“The Government of Tamil Nadu and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Chennai Port Trust have agreed to share equally the cost of land acquisition and rehabilitation and resettlement of slum dwellers,” he said.

The Prime Minister said that the Government has given a great impetus for the all round growth of infrastructure in the country, whether in the railways, ports or road sector.

“The UPA Government has taken steps to accelerate the progress of ongoing National Highways Development Programme. Four-laning of the Golden Quadrilateral is almost complete. We have begun six-laning the Golden Quadrilateral and concessions for 1,005 km have already been awarded. Considerable work also has been completed on the North-South and East-West Corridor,” he said.

He further said that the Government has approved construction of 1,000 km of Expressways under NHDP Phase-VI and also construction of Ring Roads, Flyovers and Bypasses in selected stretches under NHDP Phase-VII.

“These projects are targeted to be completed by 2015,” he added.

Informing about another project, he said in Tamil Nadu, the entire stretch of the Golden Quadrilateral and NHDP Phase-I for a length of 342 kms has been completed and these stretches are being taken up for six-laning.

“I am confident that the Centre and State working together will bring connectivity and prosperity to the people of Tamil Nadu under the distinguished leadership of Dr. Kalaignar,” he added.

Dr. Singh later added that the Government and the Reserve Bank have also taken several steps to reduce interest rates and increase the flow of credit for infrastructure, housing and industry.

“These measures will give a boost not only to the road sector, but also to the economy as a whole,” he said. (ANI)
