Nithari murder case: CBI court postpones hearing to May 12

Ghaziabad, May 5 (ANI): A Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Wednesday fixed May 12 as the next date for announcing the quantum of sentence on Surender Koli, who was found guilty of murdering seven-year-old Aarti in Noida”s Nithari village.

“The court has fixed 12th May as the next date for hearing to decide upon the quantum of judgement,” said Aarti”s lawyer, Sanjay Tyagi.

Earlier on Tuesday, Special Additional District and Session Judge A K Singh had convicted 38-year-old Koli for Aarti”s murder.

Aarti was the last of 19 victims in the Nithari killings. She disappeared about two months before the case was busted.

In a previous order on the Nithari killings, the special CBI court had on February 12 awarded the death sentence to Moninder Singh Pandher and Surender Koli for their roles in the Rampa Haldar murder case.

Just like in Halder murder case, the CBI has given a clean chit to Pandher primarily on the basis of his cell phone records, while holding only Koli guilty of the crime.

Unlike Rampa”s father, Aarti”s parents Durga and Neelam Prasad have never challenged the CBI”s contention that Koli alone was the culprit.

Aarti had reportedly returned home from school on the afternoon of October 25, 2006 after which she went out to buy herself some toffees.

However, she never came back. A report about Aarti going missing was then taken down at the Sector 20 police station in Noida.

On December 29, 2006, Aarti”s remains were found buried behind Pandher”s home in Nithari.

Both Pandher and Koli are accused of killing and disposing off the bodies of 19 children and a young woman between 2005 and 2006.

The investigation of the case was handed over to the CBI on January 11, 2007. The CBI has filed chargesheets in 16 cases. (ANI)

Nine-day ‘Navratri’ festival begins all over India

New Delhi/ Faizabad/Allahabad, Sept 19 (ANI): The nine-day ‘Navratri’ festival began across India with religious fervour on Saturday.

Thousands of devotees queued up at various temples dedicated to Goddess Durga.

In New Delhi, devotees converged at Jhandewalan to offer prayers prior to dawn and observed fast throughout the day.

“We observe fast on the first day of Navratri. On the first day, we pray for the whole day and meditate on Goddess Durga,” said Madan Gehlot, a devotee.

Meanwhile, at Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh, people made a beeline to the temple of Goddess Badi Devkali.

The devotees believe their wishes are fulfilled if they pray to Goddess Badi Devkali during the festival.

“People believe that coming here redeems them from their sins. Since the Goddess Devkali is the deity of Lord Rama’s dynasty, her significance is all the more. That’s why people come here to offer prayers to the Goddess,” said Poonam, a devotee.

Earlier on Friday, a day prior to the commencement of Dusshera, a unique annual horse procession was taken out through the streets of Allahabad.

The belief is that the horse representing sage Vyasa would relate the Ramayana.

Musical bands led the attractively decorated white horse procession organised by a leading Ram Lila committee of the city.

“Legend says that when Maharishi Valmiki narrated the story of Lord Rama to Luv and Kush then this horse standing next to them also listened to the story. The horse in the form of sage Vyasa tells the story of Rama to people during the Navratri celebrations,” said Ajay Kumar Shukla, secretary, Ramlila Committee.

“Naaratri”, which literally means nine nights, is observed twice a year.

The festival lasts for nine days in honour of nine manifestations of Durga, goddess of power, and fall in the months of April-May and September-October.

It is believed that during the Navratri, Goddess Durga descends on earth to rid it of the demons and blesses her devotees with happiness and prosperity. (ANI)

Durga puja celebrations on a modest scale in Siliguri

Siliguri, Sept 18 (ANI): The festival of Durga Puja is just round the corner. However, this time around, the festival may not be full of pomp and show as compared with previous years in Siliguri.

The festival is known for massive makeshift tents or pandals which are put up by various festival organising committees.

Organising committees vie for making the best and unique pandals worth hundreds of thousands of rupees.

However, global economic slowdown has dampened the pandals-making spirit. Organisers have now to make do with less.

“This year, we have been hit by global recession. We generally depend on advertisements for our revenue, but this time no company has advertised with us. So, we have no other alternatives, but to cut down our budget,” said Sourav Nath, Secretary, Central Colony Puja Committee.

The recession has also pinched decorators as they are getting fewer orders for embellishing pandals.

“Puja committees have trimmed their budgets. This has affected us severely,” said Gopal Sarkar, General-Secretary, North Bengal Decorators Association.

Durga Puja is the biggest festival in Bengal.

The festival is also known as Dussehra and Navaratri in other parts of the country. (ANI)

Tight security at Vaishno Devi shrine ahead of “Navratri”

Katra, Sept 18 (ANI): Security has been beefed up at the famous Vaishno Devi Temple near Jammu ahead of the nine-day “Navratri” festival.

Paramilitary and police personnel are patrolling and frisking people at important points in Katra, which is thronged by thousands of devotees every year, especially during Navratri.

The nine-day Navratri festival will begin from Saturday and the authorities claim to be in full control of the situation.

“There is much fanfare in Katra during Navratra festival and the inflow of tourists also rises manifold during those days. We have made proper security arrangements. We have taken the help of the CRPF. This time, we also have one contingent of Haryana police,” said Ashok Sharma, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

The devotees making their way to the shrine were also put through rigorous checking, a routine, exercised with extra care, considering the sensitive nature of the shrine and keeping recent threats in mind.

The devotees complied without complaining.

“There was not much trouble during the security check. We were checked several times but we did not face any problem. It was all done very safely,” said Vijay Kumar, a devotee.

‘Navratri’, which literally means nine nights, is observed twice a year.

The festival lasts for nine days in honour of nine manifestations of Durga, goddess of power ,and fall in the months of April-May and September-October.

It is believed that during the Navratri, Goddess Durga descends on earth to rid it of the demons and blesses her devotees with happiness and prosperity. (ANI)

Judgment in second Nithari case to be delivered today

Ghaziabad, Apr 25 (ANI): The judgment in second Nithari rape and murder case of 8-year-old Aarti will be delivered by a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Judge here today.

Aarti was the last known victim in the Nithari killings, having disappeared just about two months before the case was busted.

In the previous judgment in the Nithari killings, the special CBI court on February 12 awarded the death sentence to Moninder Singh Pandher and Surinder Koli for their respective roles in the Rampa Haldar murder case.

Just like in Halder murder case, the CBI has given a clean chit to Pandher primarily on the basis of his cellphone records, while holding only Koli guilty of the crime.

Unlike Rampa’s father, Aarti’s parents Durga and Neelam Prasad have never challenged CBI’s contention that Koli alone was the culprit.

However, she never came back. A report about Aarti going missing was then taken down at the Sector 20 police station in Noida.

On December 29, 2006, Aarti’s remains were found buried behind Pandher’s home in Nithari.

Both Pandher and Koli are accused of killing and disposing off the bodies of 19 children and a young woman between 2005 and 2006.

The investigation of the case was handed over to the CBI on January 11, 2007. The CBI has filed chargesheets in 16 cases. Chargesheets in the remaining three cases are still awaited. (ANI)

Thieves again raid Hindu temple in Trinidad

Port-of-Spain, April 16 (IANS) Thieves have again broken into a Hindu temple in Trinidad and Tobago. This is one in a series of raids which have affected the Hindu places of worship in this Caribbean nation over the years.

Police reported that scores of devotees returned to the Mon Plasir Road Hindu Temple on Monday to find it ransacked and over $10,000 in electronic items taken away. The stolen items included a computer, a television set and sound amplification equipment.

Krishna Murity, 39, public relations officer of the temple, said that about 70 devotees had gone to a religious camp during the Easter weekend in Sangre Grande, some 40 km away.

He said that neither the temple nor any of the statues inside had been desecrated. The statues included those of Ram and Sita, Shiva and Parvati and Durga.

Murity said that following a tipoff from neighbours, some of the items were found hidden in a bush adjoining a river. Only the television set and computer were retrieved. Police continue to work on the matter.

In recent years, several Hindu temples and places of worship have been desecrated.

In August 2006, the world-famous Temple by The Sea, Waterloo, Central Trinidad, was ransacked and statues of Shiva, Hanuman, Lakshmi, Durga, among others were damaged beyond recognition, but so far police have not been able to charge any one. However, through corporate sponsorships and individuals, the statues were restored and consecrated again.

Since the arrival of East Indians from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar between 1845 and 1917, Hinduism has become one of the major religions in Trinidad and Tobago. It is also prominent in Guyana, Suriname, Jamaica and other countries.

Over 300,000 Hindus represent some 24 percent of the 1.3 million population in Trinidad and Tobago.

Soren’ son ignores Congress request, firm on contesting

Ranchi, April 8 (IANS) Ignoring the Congress’ request, Durga Soren, the eldest son of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Shibu Soren, has refused to withdraw his nomination from the Godda Lok Sabha constituency in Jharkhand.

Wednesday was the last day for withdrawal of nomination for the second phase of elections, scheduled April 23.

But the Congress’ efforts to persuade Durga Soren to back out have failed.

Under the Congress-JMM seat-sharing agreement in the state, Godda was allotted to the Congress, which has a sitting MP there.

Godda MP Furkan Ansari of the Congress met Durga Soren Monday and again Tuesday and tried to persuade him to withdraw his nomination.

‘It is up to the JMM and Durga Soren to decide on the alliance in the state. The Congress is waiting for their decision,’ said Alok Dubey, spokesperson of the Congress election committee in Jharkhand.

Filing his nomination, Durga Soren had said he would teach a lesson to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) for ensuring his father’s defeat in the Tamar assembly by-election.

In January, Shibu Soren had lost the by-election, which he needed to win to remain the state’s chief Minister.

Blind man to contest from Azamgarh

AMILO VILLAGE, 20 kilometres from the district headquarters, has made an electoral history of sorts. Khairul Bashar, a 52-year-old resident of the village contesting the Azamgarh seat, is perhaps the first blind candidate in the world.

He knows he is unlikely to win but is determined to expose corruption in public life. Khairul lost his vision following an epidemic outbreak when he was six years old.

He now runs a kerosene shop in Amilo and is contesting as an independent against heavyweights like sitting BSP MP Akbar Ahmad ‘Dumpy,’ BJP’s Ramakant Yadav and the SP’s Durga Yadav SP. Mritak Sangh, a group operated by Lal Bihari ‘Mritak’, has fielded Khairul, father of 12 children. Lal Bihari was once declared dead by his relatives so they could grab his property.

“Khairul may be physically blind, but is mentally the most enlightened of the candidates. The other candidates are mentally blind.

He may not win even a handful of votes, but will certainly win the hearts with the saga of his courageous life,” Lal Bihari, who contested general election against V.P. Singh from Allahabad in 1988, said. Lal Bihari also contested against Rajiv Gandhi from Amethi in 1989, and was in electoral fray for the Azamgarh seat in 2004.

Talking to HT, Khairul, who also lost all but one finger of his right hand in an accident in the 1970s, said, “I’m not here to win the polls, but to enlighten people about corruption in society and request them to not vote for mafiosi-turned-politicians or on caste or communal lines.”.

Huge rush in temples on Ramnavami

NEW DELHI: People thronged temples in large numbers on Ramnavami, the last day of the nine-day festival of Navratri, on Wednesday. Early morning,
many families, including children, couples, old and young, broke their fast by worshipping young girls who are believed to symbolise the Goddess Durga. They are offered puris, halwa, chanas and red chunnis on the festive occasion.

The city saw many processions early in the morning. Devotees queued up outside temples. “We started with Ram stuti and then Aarti was done. Later prasaad was distributed to all the devotees. The ritual took 4-5 hours,” said Pappu Pandey, priest of Ram Mandir at Patparganj. “The last day of navaratri is always very auspicious. I have come to the temple with my family to pray,” said Ravi Prakash, a devotee.

Navratri, dedicated to Goddess Durga, is celebrated twice a year during the spring and the autumn season. It is one of the most holy and revered festivals of Hindus. Most of the devotees observe fasts during the nine-day festival and consume only fruits and milk.

Pakistani hackers target Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam in Orkut world

By Sandeep Datta

New Delhi, Jan.7 (ANI): Some Pakistani individuals, who are on the prowl to hack important websites and misuse them by giving it Islamic or Pakistani colour, have targeted Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s famous community group on orkut, the social networking site.

The community group holds significance for the orkut members, as it is probably the biggest platform for the young fans of former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam. And, the most of the members of this community write in it with deep affection and respect for their ideal in life. There are 207,249 members in this group.

The hackers have renamed the community originally named “Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam” as “Indian” and now using it as a platform for malicious and objectionable content.

The main profile page now reads: “We, the people of India, apologise to our Pakistani brothers and ISI for barbaric acts of terrorism like Mumbai and Gujarat and many more which were originated and carried out by few citizens of India and supported by government of India. We condemn such acts to fullest.”

The new moderators’ names are very much visible on the site and show registration from Pakistan.

The incident has outraged fans of former President APJ Abdul Kalam in orkut world. They want the authorities to take all measures to prevent such incidents.

“As a regular member of many communities and the owner of “India” community

on orkut (which is Pakistani hacker””””s biggest target since its existence and has nearly 8 lakh members), I have faced this menace not for the first time. The unethical hackers groups usually are a bunch of intelligent guys. But they need to spend their time and energy on some constructive work like helping secure our networks rather than involving in hacking online communities,” said Vishal Trivedi, owner of the “India” community (796,517 members)

“The hacking of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam community is not only unfortunate but disgusting too, as the hackers group of Pakistan, in reality, have started the whole unethical practice by hacking and defacing many Indian communities like Hinduism, Durga Puja and non-stop abusing in them. This vicious circle has no beginning or end. In order to counter such unethical activity, there is a need to spread awareness among members on social networking communities about security measures to secure their profiles,” Vishal added.

“Pakistani hackers have increased their activities just after Mumbai attacks. We noticed the attacks when one of the moderators on VHP community was hacked and 3,000 members were banned. We also saw hacking of APJ Abdul Kalam community. Now they are using that community to further their anti-India propaganda. They want to spread panic. They do not have to worry about anything, as Pakistani government seems to indirectly support them,” said Vikas Sankrityayan, owner of “RSS Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh community” (42,011 members).

Recent media reports stated intelligence agencies have warned about anti-India elements in Pakistan planning to attack Indian computer networks. It had warned that Pakistani hackers were trying out a dry run by hacking popular websites. (ANI)
