Great British Duck Race makes it to Guinness Book of Records

London, Sept 8 (ANI): A record breaking 205,000 plastic ducks floated down the Thames on Sunday as part of the third annual Great British Duck Race in London.

The event shattered the previous record of 175,000 ducks in a similar race held in China earlier this year.

“The duck race is a fantastic opportunity to have some fun, raise some serious money for a range of good causes and have the chance to win 10,000 pounds, as well as take part in a Guinness World Record Attempt,” Mike Scott, the event’s managing director, was quoted by the Telegraph, as saying,

The gala held near Hampton Court Palace raised over 100,000 pounds for various charities.

Each blue duck that entered the 1km race was priced at 2 pounds will now be sent to recycling plant in North Shropshire.

The yet unknown owner of the winning duck will be given a prize money of 10,000 pounds. (ANI)

Ashes series loss will end Australia’s dominance of world cricket

London, Aug. 22 (ANI): Should Australia lose the fifth and final Ashes Test being played at The Oval, it could signal the end the side’s domination of world cricket.

According to the Courier Mail, only something very special, or days of unforecast rain, can prevent Australia losing the fifth Test, the Ashes and ultimately tumbling as low as fourth on the official world Test rankings. Australia is already down to third on the one-day rankings.

A loss will leave Ricky Ponting, one of Australia’s greatest players and most successful leaders, just the second captain in 132 years of Ashes history to lose two series in England.

The other was Australia’s first touring captain, Billy Murdoch, well over 100 years ago.

It shapes as Australia’s third series loss in five, which includes its first home Test series loss in 17 years last summer.

When Mark Taylor led his side to victory on the 1995 tour of the West Indies, it was considered the unofficial handing over of the world championship.

Australia was already halfway through winning eight successive Ashes series and three successive World Cups followed, the last two with undefeated campaigns.

The reality is stark. For all the great names to retire or drift away over the past two years, more will follow.

Brett Lee has 310 Test wickets but did not play a Test on tour and will be 33 when Australia next turns out in a Test.

Stuart Clark is already that age and on this tour has also been behind the new pace trio of Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus, the three leading wicket-takers in the series.

Most worrying is the continued collapse of Mike Hussey in the middle order. Another confused duck has reinforced his fourth poor series in a row.

That way he can get some runs and some confidence in the Sheffield Shield for Western Australia.

Phil Hughes is the most exciting of the 20-somethings coming through and he was dropped after two Tests, deemed not to have the technique to survive at Test level.

It may be that Phil Jaques can regain fitness after debilitating back problems and the form which saw him score three centuries in 11 Tests, freeing up Shane Watson to move down the order as a real all-rounder.

In the end it’s not the big numbers that matter but the big moments that will count.

Fast bowler Stuart Broad has again highlighted that when this Australian side is bad, it is terrible. (ANI)

Hayden Panettiere left aghast by her own naked scene

Washington, Jul 9 (ANI): American actress Hayden Panettiere was left shocked to see so much of her flesh being exposed on the final version of her new movie ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper’ during a nude scene.

Panettiere, 19, stripped down totally in the new comedy, but she did not expect to see much of her naked body due to the U.S. PG-13 rating, which allows kids under 13 to see the movie when accompanied by an adult.

But the actress sank down in her seat when she viewed the scene during a recent preview of the film, as her “side boobage” filled up the entire screen.

“It’s one of those things that you forget how much of your flesh is in it, until I saw it again and then I was like, ‘Duck, duck!’. I knew they were doing it (filming a nude scene), but I didn’t know it would be so big on the screen!” Contactmusic quoted her as saying. (ANI)

How Royals blew Brit taxpayers’ money

London, Jun 30 (ANI): Brit taxpayers had to dole out 250,000 pounds for a makeover of Princess Beatrice’s university digs, stated a bill revealed by the Queen on June 29.

The fund was used to redecorate a private four-bed apartment at St James’s Palace for Beatrice, 20, who started her history of art degree at Goldsmiths University, London, last September.

The annual report into Royal finances revealed the money was spent on rewiring the rooms, plus installing a new kitchen, two new bathrooms and a wood floor in two reception rooms.

Graham Smith, from the campaign group Republic, has branded the huge cost a “scandal”.

“This puts the rows about MPs’ expenses and duck houses in perspective. This bill eclipses any put in by MPs in their expenses,” the Sun quoted him as saying.

“The level of scrutiny being given to MPs expenses should apply to Royal spending,” he said.

The TaxPayers’ Alliance has also condemned the St James Palace expenditure.

“It’s staggering,” campaign manager Susie Squire said.

“Many taxpayers will find this unjustifiable, not least because Beatrice does not carry out official engagements,” she stated.

But a senior Royal aide has defended the 256,000-pound bill, saying the age of the property meant high restoration costs.

“The apartment had been used by a member of household staff,” he said.

“It’s a normal apartment which was on our list for improvements for some time.

“It co-coincided with the Princess going to university in London and it was therefore appropriate for her to occupy it,” he added. (ANI)

Chinese woman boiled man’s head in soup to treat daugther’s psychiatric problems

London, June 24 (ANI): In the hope of finding a cure for daughter’s psychiatric problems, a woman in China boiled a man’s head in a soup, local newspaper reported.

Back in 2008, Lin Zongxiu, from the southwestern province of Sichuan had heard that soup made with a man’s head could help cure her daughter who had suffered from psychiatric problems for years, the Chengdu Commercial newspaper reported.

After learning the information, Lin and her husband decided to enlist the help of a man in December who knocked unconscious a drunk 76-year-old passer-by before beheading him, the paper claimed.

The couple then gave their 25-year-old daughter soup made from the man’s head, and duck, reports The Telegraph.

On Monday a local court sentenced the murderer to death with a two-year reprieve, and Lin was convicted of helping to destroy evidence that included the culprit’s bloody clothes and shoes, the paper said. (ANI)

‘Made-over’ Susan Boyle ‘still’ a virgin

London, May 23 (ANI): Britain’s Got Talent star Susan Boyle is still a virgin despite having a makeover, it has emerged.

The 48-year-old, who turned into an overnight celebrity with her jaw-dropping performance of the Les Miserables song ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ on the talent show, had claimed she had never been with a man and had “never been kissed”.

And despite having groomed herself by ditching her bushy eyebrows and colouring her hair since her rise to stardom, the church volunteer from Scotland is yet to score in her love life, say sources.

“She hasn’t had time to meet a man. She’s had the world camped out on her doorstep and she’s been practising hard,” the Sun quoted a source as saying.

“She is determined to show she’s more than a 90-second audition and a YouTube clip. She’ll have plenty of time for men after the show ends,” the source added.

Judge Piers Morgan recently joked he would be happy to break Susan’s ‘kissing duck’ when she turns up for the forthcoming semi-finals. (ANI)

Swann to Aussies: Don’t waste your time sledging Mr. Cool Strauss

London, May 20 (ANI): England off-spinner Graeme Swann has told the Aussies they will be wasting their breath trying to sledge ice-cool England skipper Andrew Strauss.

“The Aussies are past masters at mind games, and there is no surprise they look to unsettle a captain – he’s the fulcrum of the team. But I can’t see it bothering Straussy one bit, he’s so relaxed it will be water off a duck’s back,” Swann told The Sun.

Australian captain Ricky Ponting fired the first shot in the pre-Ashes war-of-words yesterday, claiming his bowlers will target the left-hander this summer.

But Strauss has proved his mental strength since taking over the leadership in January, most recently guiding his troops to a 2-0 Npower series win over West Indies.

“As a team we’re enjoying our cricket at the moment. It was a surreal winter, with the bombs in India and the KP and Moorsey thing. But we have very English way of having a laugh and joke to stay upbeat and get past these things. And as a result, we’re starting to gel as a team that could be strong for many years to come,” Swann said.

“Straussy has been so important in creating that atmosphere and I’ve been very impressed by him. He leads from the front, but enjoys a laugh and puts our minds at ease,” Swann added.

The 30-year-old is producing the goods with both bat and ball, and cannot wait to take on old friends this summer.

He joked: “I’m enjoying my batting, and I’m gutted Ravi Bopara has come in and stolen the No 3 spot in the side.

“But facing Australia will be a dream this summer, and they have a few left-handers in their side which I always enjoy bowling against. I played with Mike Hussey when I was at Northants and I always claimed I’d face him in an Ashes Test some day – somehow I don’t think he believed me! (ANI)

Manchester City eyes Chelsea’s bad boy Drogba

London, May 15 (ANI): Manchester City is ready to make a 15million pound swoop for Chelsea’s bad boy Didier Drogba.

Boss Mark Hughes made a firm inquiry about the Ivory Coast striker in January and, although he was knocked back, the Londoners admitted a summer move was a possibility.

Now, City wants to push through a three-year deal, worth around 150,000 pound a week, as soon as the window reopens.

Hughes is desperate to recruit a powerful front man after cooling his interest in Blackburn’s Roque Santa Cruz, The Sun reports.

Drogba’s Stamford Bridge future was up in the air even before last week’s foul-mouthed television rant following their Champions League knock out.

There is a split within Chelsea over whether to keep him or not but City’s offer for a 31-year-old, who has been plagued by injury problems, would be hard to ignore.

Meanwhile, Hughes insists he has no fears about his future at City. The Eastlands boss said: “People talking about me and my job is just water off a duck’s back.

“But from within the club I feel I’m getting some credit. I have two years left on my contract at the moment. My view is I’ll be here next year,” he added. (ANI)

New dino species might be found in Canada

Washington, May 13 (ANI): The discovery of a gruesome feeding frenzy that played out 73 million years ago in northwestern Alberta may also lead to the discovery of new dinosaur species in northwestern Alberta in Canada.

The discovery includes nesting site and the remains of baby, plant-eating dinosaurs and the teeth of a predator.

University of Alberta student Tetsuto Miyashita and Frederico Fanti, a paleontology graduate student from Italy, made the discovery near Grande Prairie, 450 kilometers northwest of Edmonton.

The researchers matched the teeth to a Troodon, a raptor-like dinosaur about two metres in length.

This finding has opened new doors in dinosaur research on this part of the continent: “It established that dinosaurs were nesting at this high latitude,” said Miyashita.

“It also shows for the first time a significant number of Troodons in the area (who) hunted hatchling dinosaurs,” he added.

Over the course of two summers of field work Miyashita and Fanti began building a theory that Grande Prairie is a “missing link” between known dinosaur species that existed much further to the north and south.

“Prior to this, there were no localities with a variety of dinosaurs and other animals between Alaska and southern Alberta,” said Myiashita.

The list of new finds for the area includes armoured and thick-headed plant eaters and fossilized freshwater fish and reptiles.

According to Miyashita, this small pocket of previously undiscovered life could have had interactions that lead to the evolution of new species.

“New dinosaurs weren’t created by interbreeding. Having a variety of dinosaurs in one area creates new ecological interactions such as competition for food and predation,” said Miyashita. “That can lead to the evolution of a new species,” he added.

One Grande Prairie dinosaur the researchers suspect is a new species is the Duck bill.

Miyashita said that unlike the Duck bill found further north in Alaska, the Grande Prairie has a visible bump or crest on its forehead.

The pair will go back to Grande Prairie area in 2010 to focus on finding other dinosaur species in the area. (ANI)

Humans ‘can’t distinguish pate from dog food’

Washington, May 2 (ANI): People might one day be eating dog food, for a new study has found that it tastes as good as liverwurst or duck liver mousse.

The researchers found that people can’t differentiate in the flavour of dog foods with that of normal human foods.

In the study involving 18 subjects, the research team separately put organic Canned Turkey and Chicken Formula for Puppies/Active Dogs, duck liver mousse, pork liver pâté, liverwurst, and spam in a food processor.

Pâté is a mixture of minced meat and fat in the form of spreadable paste, generally made from a finely ground or chunky mixture of meats and liver, and often with additional fat, vegetables, herbs, spices or wine.

The resulting product was put into five different bowls and garnished with parsley.

They found that although the volunteers didn’t exactly prefer the dog food, they couldn’t identify it either.

“Only 3 of 18 subjects correctly identified sample C as the dog food,” CBS News quoted the paper as stating.

“Although human beings do not enjoy eating dog food, they are also not able to distinguish its flavour profile from other meat-based products that are intended for human consumption,” the authors added. (ANI)

Its almost a Satvik meal for rich leaders

London, Apr 1(ANI): Whats cooking is the buzz….What is going to be served at the banquet hosted by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown for the world’s 20 most powerful leaders? The menu is a secret but some leaks are out. One is that it is going to be comparably frugal and two that pork is off the menu. That is certain. The Saudi Arabian, Turkish and Indonesian delegations wouldn’t want that.

It is a six course meal but without truffles and caviar. The menu has to reflect the difficult economic times of today or else the host would look very much like Marie Antoinette, medieval French Queen who is supposed to have said “let them eat cake” when she was told her subjects had no bread to eat.

It just will make very bad public relations to see Gordon Brown sipping champagne and nibbling on duck when his people are scrimping on groceries at Tesco and Sainsbury.

Brown had to face flak last year when he binged on an embarrassing 18-course spread at the G8 summit last year in Japan. The height of arrogance was when in November George Bush played host for leaders of the G-20 to discuss the economic crisis. On the menu was a gastronomic tsunami.

Executive White House Chef Cristeta Comerford, from Fruitwood-smoked Quail with Quince Gastrique to a Pear Torte with Huckleberry Sauce.

Preparing a meal for picky heads of state is a logistical nightmare, as one has to be aware of dietary preferences of all of them lest they get offended. But Jamie Oliver, the British chef who rose to stardom with his TV show The Naked Chef is a past master. He will be assisted by his apprentices from his London restaurant, Fifteen.

President Obama is not a finicky eater but he prefers healthy options rather than work his way through as steak. French President Nicolas Sarkozy loves his after dinner chocolate but since his marriage to Carla Bruni and entry of attractive trainer Julie Imperiali into his life who says he has dropped several trouser sizes, the French Premier stays off butter. Prime Minister, is a very very small eater himself. Not because of vanity but because of his diabetic condition. He nibbles at his food when he attends banquets.

About German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the less said the better. She is the one who obliquely blamed the food crisis of 2008 on the fact that India’s were getting to eat two square meals. Also there are the cold vibes between her and host Gordon Brown so the German stiff upper lip will be on display regardless of what the platter offers.

Of course when Brown gives the goody bag at the end of the meal it is going to evoke smiles. The bag consists of a tie designed by a British tailor. The tea towels will come from Ulster-based linen producer Thomas Ferguson Irish Linen. Celebrity designer Kelly Hoppen will provide the candles, while the chocolates will come from Rococo Chocolates, founded by Chantal Coady.

Stylish and frugal and not in the least over the top. The chef promises a typical British meal. Oh No! At least the officials and reporters accompanying the heads of state can step out of their hotels and grab the ‘pucca’ British meal…chicken tikka masala. By Smita Prakash (ANI)

RJD, LJP campaign jointly in Bihar

Nalanda, Mar 27 (ANI): Ahead of the general elections, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and Lok Janashakti Party (LJP) chief Ram Vilas Paswan commenced their campaign jointly here on Thursday.

Although both these parties are a part of the UPA, they contended that with the help of Samajwadi Party (SP), the Congress party would not have any scope to form the government again.

Earlier, both the parties had downplayed the claims of the leader of the UPA, the Congress party for seats in Bihar.

Consequent to the sidelining of the Congress party, RJD and LJP had declared that they would form an understanding between themselves and enter the poll fray.

Thus both the parties, RJD and LJP, are contesting in all the 40 seats in Bihar with the hopes of outwitting Congress party and also the NDA-led by the BJP.

Also Lalu and Paswan are projecting a possible new tie-up with Mulayam Singh-led SP, presently associated with the Congress party.

These three parties by themselves claim to have a firm base in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

As Ram Vilas Paswan put it, the coming together of these three parties may exert more pressure on the Congress party.

“If you combine the three parties, we would have 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, 40 seats in Bihar and our alliance have also taken place in Jharkhand. When we comprise the three, then we would have 134 seats out of total 543 Lok Sabha seats in these three states itself. We have strengthened our vision to bowl out the NDA for a duck,” said Paswan.
Meanwhile, campaigning in Nalanda, Lalu lashed out at the Bihar Janata Dal (United)-State Government.

He accused state Chief Minsiter Nitish Kumar of not letting party leaders and workers of RJD and LJP to campaign in the area and is creating bottle necks.

“We are not being allowed to raise our flags. We are not entitled to carry out our road shows,” said Lalu. (ANI)

Credit and honour for both Australia, South Africa after series

Cape Town (South Africa), Mar.25 (ANI): The double series score line of 3-3 should be seen as a befitting result for the heavyweight encounter between Australia and South Africa, as it went the distance, and allowed both combatants to emerge with credit and honour.

According to Fox Sports, the larger question that arises is the International Cricket Council rankings. For the moment, Australia is the number one Test side in the world, but South Africa is nipping at its heels.

Just as one series cannot make a team good or bad, Australia will take positives from the recent series to convert itself from an apparently transitional outfit into world beaters again.

With the Ashes next on Australia’s Test radar, there is as much to look upon with concern as there is confidence.

Australia rolled the dice in South Africa with four debutants – Phillip Hughes, Marcus North, Ben Hilfenhaus and Bryce McGain. In most instances the punts paid off, none more so than the 20-year-old opener Hughes.

The ability, style and maturity shown by Hughes suggests Australia have found a talent worth persisting with in England and beyond.

To come back from his debut duck, and the near-comedy nature of his dismissal, to go half-century, century, 150 shows a young man with unshakable self-belief and thirst for a scrap.

Hughes’s technique will be tested in a different way on the seaming decks in England, but he will cut his teeth for Middlesex beforehand – much to the old foe’s chagrin – and offers an X-factor to Australia’s top order. His panache is as refreshing as it is effective.

According to Fox Sports, Marcus North is an interesting proposition. In scoring a debut century in Johannesburg, Australia have unearthed a ready-made No.6 who can offer a few overs of useful spin.

” With Johnson an absolute must at No.8, Australia have been presented with the opportunity to take the bull by the horns and play four specialist pacemen. ”

His three subsequent failures (aggregate 43 runs) temper enthusiasm somewhat, but North, much like Mike Hussey before him, is an experienced cricketer who knows his game. He must go to England, where he has garnered a wealth of know-how from several years playing county cricket.

With Hughes and Simon Katich looking set, Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke scoring runs and Brad Haddin finding his feet at No.7, Australia’s batting is looking rock solid. The only issue is Hussey.

Hussey has shown glimpses of a revival in South Africa, but not enough to suggest the worst is behind him.he rise of Mitchell Johnson, with both bat and ball, means Australia’s desolate search for an all-rounder should be over. Andrew Symonds is not an option, Shane Watson’s fitness can’t be relied on and, as serviceable as Andrew McDonald was with the ball in South Africa, his batting was generally poor. More importantly, his position should go to a bowler who can do more than hold up an end.

With Katich, Clarke and North all capable of helping out in this area, Australia might be tempted to cut their losses and travel to England without a frontline spinner.

But history, not to mention prudence or England’s habitual shakes against the turning ball, suggests they will at least take one, even if the names Nathan Hauritz and Jason Krejza do not inspire great confidence. (ANI)

Hamilton Test: India bundle out Kiwis for 279, score 29 for 0

Hamilton (New Zealand), Mar.18 (ANI): India was 29 without loss in their first innings in reply to New Zealand’s 279 at stumps on day one of the first cricket test at Hamilton’s Seddon Park today.

Virender Sehwag (22) and Gautam Gambhir (6) safely negotiated the seven overs available before stumps, the Waikato Times reported.

Captain Daniel Vettori top scored for his side with 118 – his third test century – while Jesse Ryder brought up his maiden test ton the ball before his dismissal for 102 ended the innings.

Ishant Sharma was the leading Indian bowler with four for 73 from 19.2 overs.

Ryder had a few nervous moments on 98 as number 11 batsman Chris Martin had to bat out five balls from spinner Harbhajan Singh.

However, in the next over Ryder promptly hit the first ball for four to bring up his maiden test ton.

He was out next ball for 102, but together with Vettori’s 118, New Zealand salvaged a horror first morning to end on 279.

After being sent into bat and going to lunch teetering at 61 for six, skipper Vettori and Ryder added an unbeaten 185 for the seventh wicket getting New Zealand to 246 midway through the final session of the opening day before Vettori was out for 118 with Ryder 77 not out.

Their batting through the afternoon was in complete contrast to the efforts of the top order.

Following Vettori’s demise the Black Caps lost Kyle Mills for a first-ball duck making New Zealand 246 for eight, then Iain O’Brien almost saw Ryder through to his ton but was out for eight with Ryder on 98.

The opening session totally vindicated Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s late change of heart over whether to bat or bowl after winning the toss.

India’s players had been expecting to bat first if Dhoni won the toss but he instead inserted New Zealand, reasoning there could be some early assistance for his pace attack.

Vettori did admit he would have batted had he won the toss.

New Zealand have recalled experienced pace bowler Chris Martin after he was dropped for the drawn series against the West Indies in December.

Kyle Mills passed a fitness test on a shoulder early today meaning uncapped right armer Brent Arnel has been omitted.

India have opted for Munaf Patel as their third seamer ahead of Lakshmipathy Balaji and the uncapped Dhawal Kulkarni.

The three match series continues in Napier on March 26-30 while the final test is in Wellington between April 3-7. (ANI)

Hughes likened to Sir Don, but its water of a duck’s back for him

Durban, Mar.12 (ANI): Australia’s new opener Phil Hughes is already being compared to Sir Donald Bradman after scoring two centuries in the Durban Test.

Though he is not the Don, the similarities are there.

According to Fox Sports, Hughes is small in height as was the Don, has shown a hunger for making runs consistently just as the Don, his technique is highly unusual as was the Don’s, he comes from the bush just as the Don, and possesses the kind of unflappable temperament that fast bowlers, opposition captains, coaches and media hype can’t bring down just as the Don.

The 20-year-old made 115 and 160 in this week’s second Test in Durban against South Africa, earning the man-of-the-match award and the world record for being the youngest player in Test history to score two hundreds in the same match.

“It has definitely been an exciting two weeks and something I’ll never forget,” Hughes said in reflection.

“To get in the side, and to be 2-0 up, it’s just a great feeling to be around these guys.

“To spend time in the middle with Ricky Ponting and Katto (Simon Katich) and these guys at the top of the order, it has been unbelievable.”

Hughes is averaging 87.50 in Test cricket, and was probed again about his closeness to Bradman’s famous 99.94 average.

“That’s all you guys just hyping it up. You hear that type of thing,” Hughes replied with a smile.

“I like to take it day by day and just keep it simple and go on to the next game and just not look too far ahead really.

“Enjoy the match you are playing – I have played two Test matches now and thoroughly enjoyed them and I’m looking for the third (but) I don’t want to look too far ahead.”

Australia captain Ricky Ponting says he didn’t know Hughes at all a few weeks ago and used the team’s first week on tour in Potchefstroom to learn a bit more about his new opening batsman.

“I’d seen a bit of him on the television, heard a lot of good things coming back about him from his NSW teammates,” Ponting said.

“They came out all guns blazing in the second innings in Jo’burg. I got to spend a bit of time with him then.

“I made sure I was around him and the bowler when a few of the verbals were taking place just to see how he was handling it.

“Every time he would just look at me with a smile on his face and tell me that he was loving it.

“Phil showed that he really enjoys that so far … if he continues to do that as much as he had over the last couple of weeks, I’m sure he’ll have a great career,” said Ponting. (ANI)

Ponting describes opener Hughes as a joy to watch

Durban (South Africa), Mar.9 (ANI): Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has described talented young opener Phil Hughes as a joy to watch.

Hughes, 20, has scored 326 runs already in Australia’s Test tour of South Africa, and became the youngest player in history to score a century in each innings of a Test in Durban overnight.

He followed up his first innings 115 with an unbeaten 136 to break West Indian George Headley’s record set against England in 1930 and move Australia to 3 for 292 at stumps on day three of the second Test.

That gave Australia an overall lead of 506 as it seeks to seal a 2-0 win against the Proteas in the best-of-three series.

Hughes made a duck in his first innings in Johannesburg, but then responded with a half century before making two tons in this match.

“I think we saw glimpses of his ability and his hunger for runs in the second innings down in Johannesburg. It was a not the ideal start for him, a fourth ball duck for him I think in his first innings in Test cricket, but the way he’s responded and bounced back from that and he’s really taken on the challenge against a good bowling attack.

“It’s been something to sit back and watch, it’s been enjoyable,” ABC News quoted Ponting, as saying.

Hughes admitted setting records was not on his mind out in the middle, but says he was thrilled to better Hedley’s 79-year-old milestone.
“I’d heard of him. But you know it’s a great feeling to break that record it’s definitely a great feeling,” he said.

Hughes has lived up to the high expectations of his great potential after being hand picked to replace veteran opener Matthew Hayden at the top of Australia’s order.

The New South Wales player says he is delighted to be performing so well against the number two Test side in the world.

Ponting says he will wait until later today before deciding when to declare with the tourists in a dominant position over the Proteas with two days remaining.

He says while the weather may still play a part in his decision, he is hoping to force South Africa to spend more time in the field. (ANI)

Hayden compares Hughes to Langer

Brisbane, Mar.8 (ANI): Retired Australian Test opener Matthew Hayden has hailed his replacement, Phillip Hughes.

Australian cricket was celebrating Hughes’s maiden ton (115) on the opening day of the second Test against South Africa at Kingsmead.

At 20 and 97 days, Hughes is the youngest Australian to hit a Test century since Doug Walters cracked 155 on debut against England in 1965 when he was 19.

Hayden dubbed Hughes (170cm) the new (equally diminutive) Justin Langer, detecting eerily similar hallmarks.

Langer and Hayden forged Australia’s most prolific opening partnership – compiling, as a pair, 5655 runs in 113 innings at an average of 51.41.

“(Hughes has Langer’s) posture and height. ‘Alfie’ (Langer) and I actually spoke to him at the Allan Border Medal night. He’s a respectful young man,” Fox Sports quoted Hayden, as saying.

“I haven’t seen a lot of Phil as a batsman but, like Alfie, he seems to have that mental toughness, and mental strength is the key in Test cricket. To do what he’s done against probably the most formidable opponent Australia has struck in the last decade, on their home turf, it’s phenomenal. He’s just taken to Test cricket like a duck to water,” said Hayden. (ANI)

Mike Hussey plans to break lean form with a relaxed approach

Durban (South Africa), Mar.6 (ANI): Michael Hussey, Australia’s Mr. Cricket, plans to break his lean trot with the bat in a relaxed manner.

Hussey is an upbeat and enthusiastic individual. No one celebrated Australia’s victory in the first Test with more vigor.

He has heart, soul, passion, commitment and a bloody horrible singing voice.e’s determined, but not too determined, to come good when hostilites against South Africa resume in the second Test at Sahara Stadium on Friday.

“I’m trying to go the other way and stay as relaxed as possible,” Hussey said when asked if he had analyzed the reasons for the first horror run of his Test career. I had a good look at myself in the series back home against South Africa. I think, in the first two Tests anyway, I was really trying so hard.

“It was such a big Test series. Obviously they’re a very, very good team, it was such a huge series and I was so desperate to do well that I was probably trying too hard. I was really tense, gripping that bat as hard as I could, being so determined.

“Sometimes the harder you try, the worse you go. I’m making a really conscious effort to relax my body a bit more and just let myself play. I know when I was having success for Australia early in my career, I was playing relaxed and calm. That’s what I’ve been trying to focus on the last couple of months.”

After 18 Tests, Hussey’s average was 86.18. Seventeen appearances later, it’s 57.11. His past eight innings against the Proteas have included six scores in single figures. Three of them have been ducks. His last duck was a golden, falling to a failed pull shot at the Wanderers that beggared belief.

He’s made a measly 89 runs at 12.71 in his past four Tests against the Proteas. (ANI)

Clarke backs opener Hughes to perform

Johannesburg, Feb.28 (ANI): Australian vice-captain Michael Clarke has rallied behind young opening batsman Phil Hughes, who made a fourth-ball duck on debut against South Africa.

Hughes, aged just 20, tried to cut a short ball from Dale Steyn in the first over of the match and was caught behind.

“He was disappointed,” said Clarke, who made 151 in his Test debut against India in Bangalore in 2004, aged 23.

“He wanted to do really well but he’s a pretty tough cookie and it was a pretty tough wicket to make his debut on.

“Nine times out of 10 he hits that ball for four as well. He’s a pretty confident, positive sort of guy and I know he’s looking forward to a second chance in the second innings,” the Courier Mail quoted Clarke, as saying.

The tiny left-hander has a man-sized appetite for runs and Clarke and selector David Boon are both more than happy to predict Hughes can show a massive improvement in Australia’s second innings.

“He seems pretty calm about it all,” Boon said before the match.

“He’s quiet. You can see that he always appears to be thinking about the game, thinking about his role and what he’s going to do. From what I’ve seen of him playing in first-class cricket, his ability to continually forge runs is outstanding for a young guy and what I see is something very strong in character,” said Boon.

Steyn says nerves may have played a part in the downfall of Hughes.

“If I could have bowled that ball a little bit closer to his head I would have enjoyed that,” Steyn said.

“It was a bit wide wasn’t it? But look it got a wicket.

“Who knows, maybe he was a little bit nervous and wanted to get off the mark. It was just unfortunate that he found the edge — fortunate for me, unfortunate for him.” (ANI)
