All Formula One teams are cheats, claims Irvine

London, Sep 18 (ANI): Ex-Ferrari driver Eddie Irvine has claimed that all Formula One teams are cheats.

Irvine says there has been an overreaction to the race-fixing charges being levelled at the Renault team.

He admitted the Crashgate scandal that cost Renault team chief Flavio Briatore and technical boss Pat Symonds their jobs had gone too far.

“F1 is a war and all is fair in war. When I was in various teams you would do anything to win. You pushed people off, you did whatever you could do to win,” he said.

“This is probably slightly on the wrong side of the cheating thing, but in F1 – if you look back at days gone past – then every team has done it. They will cheat, bend the rules, do whatever they could, sabotage opponents.

“Nothing was beyond the realms of decency and that is what F1 always is. It is not a pure sport,’ The Sun quoted Irvine, as saying.

The Renault team still has to appear before the World Motor Sport Council in Paris on Monday where they face a massive fine, race suspension or even being kicked out of the sport.

But Irvine reckons they could escape with a more lenient penalty amid fears that another team is about to leave the sport.

Irvine, who also raced for Jordan and Jaguar, added: “If you think that McLaren got a 100 million dollars fine for having some papers of the Ferrari team, what punishment is relevant here? It is complete banning. But I don’t believe that is going to happen as F1 cannot afford to lose more teams.”

Dial auto service launched in Chandigarh

Chandigarh, Sept 17 (ANI): In a bid to provide quick, hassle free and reasonably charged mode of transportation, a dial-an-auto service equipped with GPS navigation system has been launched for the first time in Chandigarh.

The neat and clean pink coloured motor rickshaws, known as Tuk Tuk, are changing the way people travel in the city.

The fleet of 10 dial-an-auto-rickshaw, which is only a phone call away, also boasts of two lady drivers, the first in Chandigarh.

Women passengers, who feel safer traveling with lady drivers, are appreciating their services.

“Chandigarh is one city where people are safe anyway. We have been told we are safe with the service,” said Alka Thapar, a lady auto driver.

One has to just dial 4242424 for calling an auto rickshaw to get it at your doorstep.

The autos are equipped with tamper proof fare meters to assure passengers of not being overcharged.

“We maintain our call center. Whenever any individual requires an auto he rings up and the call centre picks up the call. They record the call and then convey to the driver by selecting the vehicle nearby to pick up the customer. That’s the procedure and customer has to pay from the pick up point to the drive point only,” said VS Dhillon, Managing Director of the Tuk Tuk Auto Rickshaw Company.

The service aims at providing a quick, reliable and safe journey to people who can relax and sit back without the fear of getting fleeced by drivers.

“I’m using it for the first time It’s reasonably priced and I’m really liking it,” says Charanjit, a customer.

The new service is a welcome change for commuters. With the new service in place, passengers can hope for a change in the attitude of traditional auto drivers who are often accused of fleecing customers. By Sunil Sharma (ANI)

Pals say Katona’s former taxi driver hubby tried to sell the idea to her, which has made the ex-Atomic Kitten even more anxious about losing the custody of her two daughters, Molly and Lilly Sue, to their father and divorced hubby Brian Nicholas McFadden.

“Mark is absolutely obsessed with money and has told Kerry that it could be a life-saver for them, but at the moment she’s having nothing to do with it.

Master gene that switches on disease-fighting cells identified

London, Sep 14 (ANI): British scientists have identified the master gene, called E4bp4, that causes blood stem cells to turn into disease-fighting ‘Natural Killer’ (NK) immune cells.

The discovery, by researchers at Imperial College London, UCL and the Medical Research Council’s National Institute for Medical Research, could one day help scientists boost the body’s production of these frontline tumour-killing cells, creating new ways to treat cancer.

By ‘knocking out’ E4bp4 in a mouse model, the researchers created the world’s first animal model entirely lacking NK cells, but with all other blood cells and immune cells intact.

The breakthrough model should help solve the mystery of the role that Natural Killer cells play in autoimmune diseases, such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

According to many scientists, these diseases are a result of malfunctioning NK cells that turn on the body and attack healthy cells, which cause disease instead of fighting it.

They believe that clarifying NK cells’ role could lead to new ways of treating these conditions.

Natural Killer cells – a type of white blood cell – are a major component of the human body’s innate, quick-response immune system, providing a fast frontline defence against tumours, viruses and bacterial infections.

The gene E4bp4 is the ‘master gene’ for NK cell production, which means it is the primary driver that causes blood stem cells in the bone marrow to differentiate into NK cells.

Led by Dr Hugh Brady, the researchers are hoping to progress with a drug treatment for cancer patients which reacts with the protein expressed by their E4bp4 gene, causing their bodies to produce a higher number of NK cells than normal, to increase the chances of successfully destroying tumours.

“If increased numbers of the patient’s own blood stem cells could be coerced into differentiating into NK cells, via drug treatment, we would be able to bolster the body’s cancer-fighting force, without having to deal with the problems of donor incompatibility,” Nature quoted Brady as saying.

The researchers proved the pivotal role E4bp4 plays in NK production when they knocked the gene out in a mouse model.

Without E4bp4 the mouse produced no NK cells whatsoever but other types of blood cell were unaffected.

“Now finally, with our discovery of the NK cell master gene and subsequent creation of our mouse model, we will be able to find out if the progression of these diseases is impeded or aided by the removal of NK cells from the equation. This will solve the often-debated question of whether NK cells are always the ‘good guys’, or if in certain circumstances they cause more harm than good,” said Brady.

The study has been published in Nature Immunology. (ANI)

The reigning champ is a massive 45 points behind fellow Brit and championship leader Jenson Button, with just 50 to play for.

“I know it sounds crazy but I’m not going to put the title out of my mind until it’s mathematically impossible. I’ll still be going for it, trying to get every single point I can. We can keep attacking and the last five races should be good for us,” The Sun quoted 24-year-old Hamilton, as saying.

She said: “But I know he’s The One. That’s all I can say – he is The One. I adore my boyfriend.”

Karzai camp claims victory in Afghanistan presidential elections

Kabul, Aug.21 (ANI): Supporters of incumbent president Hamid Karzai on Friday claimed victory in the second presidential elections held in Afghanistan since 2001.

Karzai cheered the “successful conduct” of the elections.

However, according to the Washington Independent newspaper and the Afghan news service Pajhwok, Karzai’s main rival, Abdullah Abdullah, said all of Afghanistan was awaiting a change for the better.

“All citizens are awaiting change and their votes won’t go in vain. I’m optimistic the final outcome will be as good as the initial one,” remarked the former foreign minister.

The Abdullah camp has said recently that it will not accept a Karzai victory as a legitimate outcome.

“A large number of our countrymen could not vote due to insecurity. This reflects the seven-year-old government’s failure,” observed the ex-minister.

Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah’s separate claims of victory came a day after officials said there was a historic 50 percent voter turnout, notwithstanding violence in the southern and northern parts of the country.

Despite a huge military presence, the day saw militants wantonly attempting to disrupt the polls even as some 300,000 Afghan and international troops patrolled trying to prevent the attacks.

The election followed a lively campaign period in which dozens of candidates are vying for the presidency.

The violent incidents across the country included an attack on a town in Baghlan, northern Afghanistan, which prevented the opening of polling stations, the BBC reported.

Foreign news agencies said at least eight died in ensuing clashes with police. The Taliban also set fire to a bus on the Kandahar-Kabul Highway in Ghazni, after offloading passengers and the driver, reportedly as punishment for violating a Taliban ban on using the road. Rockets hit houses in Khost and Kandahar provinces killed two women and several children. A civilian car hit a roadside bomb, killing one person and injuring three in Khost.

Two suicide bombers on a motorbike in Gardez, Paktia province, were killed before hitting their target, police said.

In northern Baghlan province, a district police chief was killed when Taliban militants attacked a police post.

In Kabul, the bodies of two alleged militants were recovered after a gun battle with police in a residential district – police said they were suicide bombers but it is unclear whether they blew themselves up or were shot dead.

The polls – which also see voters electing members to provincial councils – are the first organised primarily by the Afghans themselves.

Seventeen million voters are eligible to vote. Polls opened at 7 a.m. local time and concluded at 5 p.m. local time. As well as presidential polls, voters choosing between 3,000 candidates for 420 seats in provincial councils

CBI files 5000-page chargesheet against Padamsinh Patil

Mumbai, Aug 20(ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday submitted a 5000-page chargesheet, in which it named suspended Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Padamsinh Patil as the prime accused and conspirator in the 2006 murder of Congress leader Pawanraje Nimabalkar.

“The charge sheet, filed in a Panvel court, includes the statements of 181 witnesses and over 200 documents alleging the involvement of Patil and others in the crime,” said P Kandaswamy, the head of CBI’s Mumbai Zone.

In the chargesheet, the CBI alleged that Patil hatched the conspiracy to murder Nimbalkar due to political rivalry, as he nursed a suspicion that Nimabalkar had challenged his (Patil’s) survival in politics.

It also said that Patil had paid a ‘supari’ (contract killing) of Rs 30 lakh to the other accused to eliminate Nimbalkar.

The murder of Nimbalkar and his driver took place at a Navi Mumbai croosing on June 3, 2006.

The police had made no progress for two years until the city crime branch arrested jeweller Parasmal Jain in a robbery case. Jain disclosed the murder conspiracy and was handed over to the CBI. Patil was arrested on June 6 this year.

The other accused, who were charge sheeted are Jain, Satish Mandade, Mohan Shukla, Dinesh Tiwari, Kailash Yadav and Pintoo Singh. (ANI)

Musician reunites with £300K violin forgotten in NY cab through GPS!

London, August 19 (ANI): A musician has GPS technology to thank for a reunion with his 300,000-pound violin that he forgot in a New York cab.

Hahn-Bin left the 18th century instrument in a yellow taxi while heading back home from a concert.

The absent-minded 22-year-old later realised his loss after reaching his Chinatown apartment and called the city’s taxi authorities and the police.

“Losing an instrument is a greatest fear, even more than making a mistake on stage,” the Telegraph quoted Hahn-Bin as saying.

The taxi dispatcher located the cab with ease since all yellow taxis are fitted with GPS trackers.

Overnight records showed that the musician had been dropped off by Dalbir Singh, before the driver finished his shift and headed home to New Jersey, where the violin was safely waiting. (ANI)

Tiger Woods suffers back injury scare ahead of USPGA

Washington, Aug 13(ANI): American golfer Tiger Woods’ pursuit to win his third consecutive tournament and his first major of 2009 was hit by an injury scare while practicing at Hazeltine.

Woods, a four-time US PGA Championships winner, is 13-8 favourite with bookmakers to equal the record held jointly by Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen, who have won five US PGA Championships.

The world No.1 has won five tournaments since returning from major knee surgery in February, but a back injury could hit his chances of securing a 15th major on Sunday, as he was seen wincing and holding his body after playing a shot with his driver.

According to reports, Woods left the range and went straight to the PGA Tour’s fitness and rehab trailer. Later, he came out with his agent Mark Steinberg and insisted that there were no issues.

“I’ve had four knee surgeries, so I guess that’s significant, but as far as other parts of my body are concerned I’ve always had a pretty healthy body,” The Mirror quoted Woods, as saying.

The 33 year-old further insisted that he has been lucky that he never had to face any issue regarding his back or neck, which many professionals like him face in their career.

“The only area I’ve had a problem with is in my knee when I first had those tumours. That’s what started the whole thing, culminating in surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament last year,” Woods added.

Woods will begin his first round on Thursday alongside defending champion Padraig Harrington and 2002 winner Rich Beem. (ANI)

Maoist violence on the decline in Jharkhand, say state police

Ranchi, Aug.9 (ANI): With security personnel carrying out an anti-Maoist drive for a month, a decline in the number of Maoist attacks in Jharkhand has been observed in comparison to the same period at this time last year.

“Maoist infested State of Jharkhand has seen a fall in number of attacks as compared to the last year. There has been a decline in Maoist violence in Jharkhand state,” a top police official said.

According to police statistics, there have been 228 Maoist attacks till end of July 2009, as compared to the 245 incidents recorded in 2008 in the same period.

Police say that as many as 20 most-wanted Maoists have been killed in 61 encounters besides 261 Maoists being arrested till July this year.

“The success against the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) is a result of credible intelligence,” said S. N. Pradhan, Inspector General of Police in Jharkhand.

“We have got some big success owing to the intelligence information. The inputs provided to us were accurate about people and places. Action based on the intelligence helped us to get success against Maoists,” added Pradhan.

Police along with armed constabulary and paramilitary forces have launched operations to flush out the Maoists flush out from their bastions. They claim to have foiled many attacks of the ‘Red Army.’

“To be on the safer side, we deploy more security personnel in places which are more prone to Maoist attacks such as government offices, railways or main highways. At the same time, we deploy them in remote Maoist areas. This has helped us to understand the strategy Maoists follow in attacking and the kind of places they target. However, we are very careful as Maoists change their strategy frequently and we have to adapt accordingly,” said Pradhan.

Jharkhand is one of the worst affected of nine States facing more than three-decade-old Maoist revolt.

The Maoists have increasingly escalated to their rural eastern strongholds and are active in nearly a third of the country’s 630 districts, up from a presence in less than a tenth of them in 2001, government and independent data shows.

In June, Maoist rebels declared a “liberated zone” in West Bengal state, close to the city of Kolkata, sparking unease among investors in the communist-ruled state.

A large number of paramilitary forces are supporting the State police in the anti-Maoists driver in West Bengal’s Lalgarh area. (ANI)
