Malaysia’s ‘whip-for-drinking-beer’ model a free woman now

Kuntan (Malaysia), Apr 23(ANI): Former Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, whose caning sentence for drinking beer in public had been converted into a community service one, is now a free woman.

She completed her three-week community service at the Tengku Ampuan Fatimah Children’s Home at Alor Akar about 10 kilometres from here, and was released on Thursday, The Star reports.

Kartika, a mother of two, was sentenced by the Kuantan Syariah Court in July last year to six strokes of the rotan and a fine of RM5,000 for drinking beer in December 2007 at a hotel.

Her case had attracted both local and international attention, following which the Sultan of Panang, Sultan Ahmad Shah, used his discretion to spare the mother-of-two from the canning sentence.

Kartika had earlier said that she wanted to get a job after her community service and focus on her children – one of whom was afflicted with cerebral palsy while the other had a heart condition. (ANI)

No caning sentence for beer-drinking Malaysia woman

Malaysia has dropped a caning sentence imposed on a woman for drinking beer, a case that has raised concerns of intolerance in the mainly Muslim country. Shukarno Mutalib, the father of the 32-year-old woman, told Reuters he had received a letter from Islamic authorities indicating the caning has been replaced by another penalty, but few details had been given.

“I have also been asked to present my daughter before the religious authorities on Friday for her to undergo a ‘three week’ punishment, but we do not know yet whether it will be community service or detention,” he said.

Islamic affairs officials could not be immediately contacted.

The woman, Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, was sentenced to six strokes of the cane and a fine after she was caught drinking beer by Islamic enforcement officials two years ago at a hotel lounge in the central state of Pahang.

In February, three Muslim women were caned for the first time under Islamic laws for having sex out of wedlock.

Malaysia practises a dual-track legal system, with Islamic criminal and family law applicable to Muslims. Non-Muslims, who make up about 45 percent of Malaysia’s 28 million residents, are subject to civil law.

The canings reflect growing conservatism in a country long portraying itself as a moderate Islamic state and have begun to concern investors.

Since taking office in April last year, Prime Minister Najib has pledged political and economic reforms to woo investments and reverse his ruling coalition’s historic election losses in 2008.

But ethnic and religious tensions have worsened following a row sparked after a court in December last year allowed Christians to use the word “Allah”.

Political uncertainties in Malaysia since the 2008 election has hit net portfolio and direct investment outflows to the tune of $61 billion in 2008 and 2009, according to official data.

Malaysian model not to be canned for drinking beer

London, Apr. 1 (ANI): In a dramatic turnaround of the ‘whip-for-drinking-beer’ case, the part-time Malaysian model won’t be caned anymore, as the Sultan of Penang has decided to spare her.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, a mother of two, received a letter from the Pahang state Islamic department informing her of the sultan’s decision.

“As a substitution for the caning, the sultan has ordered Kartika to perform community service for three weeks,” The Telegraph quoted her lawyer Adham Jamalullail, as saying.

Sultan Ahmad Shah is the guardian of Islam in Penang.

Most of Malaysia”s 13 states are ruled by sultans, who usually play a ceremonial role in governance but have the power to rule in Islamic matters, the paper says.

The order is likely to cool down a fiery debate over whether Sharia laws should intrude into people”s private lives in Malaysia.

Kartika”s father Shukarnor Abdul Muttalib said she has been told to report to the Islamic department on Friday.

“We will abide by the order … Kartika will go on with her life,” he said.

On July 20, last year, the court ordered her to be caned six times and fined 5,000 after she was caught drinking at a hotel in Cherating on July 11, 2008.

Kartika paid the fine, but the caning has yet to be carried out. (ANI)

Red shirts fill streets as protests begin

For weeks now Bangkok has been bracing for massive political protests that have just got underway.

Thousands of the red shirt supporters of Thaksin Shinawatra protested at six points across the city in the curtain raiser to what they claim will be a million-strong march on Sunday.

So far the protests have remained largely peaceful, but all sides of Thai politics have a reputation for violence and it is not known what the next few days will bring.

In central Bangkok on the first day of this protest, some streets have already been effectively shut down by the red shirt protesters.

Crowds of pickup trucks are driving along the street. On the back are dozens of red shirt supporters crowded together, waving flags, chanting and cheering.

The streets are lined with people. Some are supporting them; others occasionally show their displeasure.

At least on this first day, the protest has more of a festival or carnival feel. People are shouting and clapping; some are even drinking beer.

Using megaphones, the red shirts are sitting on the back of the trucks yelling loudly that they demand elections.

One woman, who did not want to give her name, says she came to see the government fall.

“We’ve come here to demand the government to dissolve the house and to have a new election,” she says.

A man who wants only to be known as Mr Dung is on foot helping to steer the rally past.

He says he also came to see the downfall of the current government led by prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

“I’m here to chase the Government,” he said.

“They should either dissolve the house or resign, that’s the whole purpose.”

Mr Dung says Sunday will be a crucial day in Thai history.

“Hundreds of thousands of people will come out, or even a million,” he said.

“They will wear red and ask the government to decide whether to dissolve the house or resign. We come out in peace.”

He is worried, though, that it may come at a personal cost to him and his red shirt comrades if the army loses patience.

“There’s no problem with police, only a problem with soldiers,” he sad.

“They did this many times already. If they use real weapons I’ll be afraid. If they do not use weapons then no problem.”

If the first day of these protests is anything to go by, there will not be anyone in Bangkok who does not know the red shirt rally is happening by Sunday.

Now, unwed Malaysian couple to be whipped for trying to have car sex

Shah Alam (Malaysia), Sep. 18 (ANI): Following the whipping episode of the Malaysian model who was sentenced for drinking beer, an unmarried couple is now being subjected to the controversial canning sentence under the country’s Sharia law for trying to have sex.

Mohammad Shahrin Abd Majid, 29, and his lover Nadiah Najat Hussin, 24, pleaded guilty to attempting to have sex in a car, were fined 5,000 ringgits or 12 months’ jail and ordered to be caned six times each, the New Strait Times Online reports.

Both Shahrin and Nadiah have paid the fine. On Wednesday, the Sharia High Court of Shah Alam granted a stay on the caning pending an appeal following an application by the couple’s counsel.

The Court has also advised both accused to marry as soon as possible.

The couple had claimed that they were to be engaged soon, and scheduled to be married in February next year.

“You are still young… after Hari Raya seek consent from both your parents to marry,” he said.

Shahrin and Nadiah would be sent to prison in order to receive the caning if their appeal gets dismissed.

Earlier, former Malaysian model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno hogged the international headlines when she was sentenced for canning under Sharia law for drinking beer at a nightclub. (ANI)

Malaysian Home Minister clears sentence of whip-for-beer-drinking model

Kuala Lumpur, Sep. 6 (ANI): Malaysian Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has “cleared” the Prisons Department to cane part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, who is being sentenced for drinking beer.

Last week, department director-general Zulkifli Omar and a woman officer came to Home Minister’s office to demonstrate the caning sentence.

“She tapped the back of a chair with the cane. There was little force involved and it was not going to inflict pain, not even like the caning carried out in schools in those days.

“I am now satisfied that the caning can be carried out by the department if the court decides to proceed and enforce the sentence,” the Star Online quoted him, as saying.

Hishammuddin said that although he was now satisfied that the department was able to conduct the caning, he still felt it had no experience to do so.

“This is because the woman (Kartika) will be the first to be caned. Four men who have received caning sentences by the Syariah Court are appealing their sentences,” he said.

“That is not their purview. It is the judicial process which decides that. If the caning sentence is to be imposed, it is their duty to carry it out fairly,” he added.

Kartika, a 32-year-old mother-of-two, was fined 5,000 ringgits and ordered to be whipped six times for drinking beer in a hotel in Cherating last year.

Her sentence has been deferred until after Ramadan.

Several parties, such as the Bar Council, have called for the sentence to be annulled.

Kartika’s father, Shukarno Mutalib, when contacted, said the family was happy to hear that the department was able to handle the caning.

“Alhamdullillah. Kartika wants it over and done with,” he said. (ANI)

‘Whip-for-drinking-beer’ model’s father hopes she will be spared the cane

Kuala Lumpur, Aug 31 (ANI): The father of Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, the former model booked for drinking beer in Malaysia, hopes that his daughter will be spared the cane if her case comes up for review.

Shukarno Mutalib said: “I’m looking forward to hearing good news and I have sought the counsel of Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria, who assured me everything would be okay during this holy month.”

Shukarno said he and Kartika would accept any decision made by the authorities.

Kartika, 32, was fined RM5,000 and sentenced to six strokes of the rotan by the Syariah High Court in Kuantan on July 20 after pleading guilty to drinking beer at a hotel in Cherating in 2007.

It is understood that the religious authorities are considering reviewing her case, The NST Online reported.

Shukarno was touched by the support from those who sympathised with Kartika.

“Now that it’s Ramadan, it’s never lonely at home. People come with kind words for Kartika, as her child is also sick. There are those who bring food and come to break fast with us,” Shukarno said.

He also said that the media hype had brought members of many Muslim non-governmental organisations, such as Sisters In Islam, to his doorstep.

“This shows that not all Islam-based NGOs are lobbying for Kartika to be caned. Some want her to undergo religious classes and such as punishment.”

He asked reporters to stop harassing Kartika for comments on the phone or by staking out their family home as she was nursing her second child who was down with pneumonia.

Kartika was to have been detained at the prison last Monday so that the caning could be carried out. But minutes after she was picked up, she was released.

Pahang Religious Affairs Committee chairman Sahfri Abdul Razak said then that the sentence would be carried out after Ramadan. (ANI)

US Fritzl held sickening orgies in his secret evil garden

London, Aug 30 (ANI): ‘American Fritzl’ Phillip Garrido held sickening orgies in the same filthy compound where he kept Jaycee Lee Dugard as his sex slave for 18 years and fathered two children with her, it has been revealed.

Mike Rogers, whose home backs on to the convicted rapist’s backyard, said: “At the time I didn’t know what was in his garden. I really tried to keep out of his business.

“But when one of his parties was excessively loud I peered through the fence and yelled for them to keep the noise down.

“What I saw was not normal. Eight to ten men, mostly Mexican, would gather in a line in his garden drinking beer, yelling and screaming and swearing.

“They normally had a bonfire and I saw them entering the tent one by one. On a number of occasions I saw them bobbing up and down through the window and I thought, ‘My God, there is something sexual going on in there.

“I thought they had a prostitute or something in there. I thought it might have been some kind of sex party or something,” he added.

The orgies were a frequent event, reports News of the World.

“They were different men each time. I just hope that sicko wasn’t pimping out Jaycee or those children. The thought makes me sick,” Rogers said.

Rogers, who lived next to Garrido for four years, said that while he was disturbed by what was happening he did not feel he had enough evidence to alert police. (ANI)

Former Malaysian PM says ‘whip-for-drinking-beer’ model’s sentence ‘too harsh’

Petaling Jaya (Malaysia), Aug. 26 (ANI): Former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohammad has expressed concern over the whipping sentence given to part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno for drinking beer, saying the punishment is “too harsh.”

Dr. Mohammad questioned the fairness of the harsh decision in his blog post, asking if Islam didn’t allow mercy for first time offenders, The Star reports.

“Is not Islam merciful to first-time offenders?” Dr Mahathir asked, adding that fairness and consideration were the main tenets in Islam.

“We will be celebrating our independence this year by flogging a Muslim woman for drinking beer under Syariah law,” he added.

“Although the story has gone across the globe, Muslims should not worry about other people’s perceptions when dealing with matters of our religion despite the negative or positive image it might bring,” he noted. (ANI)

Malaysian model mum spared cane for beer drinking

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.24 (ANI): A woman who was to be caned here today for drinking beer in a bar, has been spared by religious authorities.

“The warrant cannot be executed,” Sharafuddin Zainal Ariffin, the head of enforcement for the state of Pahang’s Islamic Affairs Department.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, would have been the first woman to be caned in Malaysia.

According to the Courier Mail, the Muslim model said she would now plan a pilgrimage to Mecca, and seeking solace in prayer.

She was earlier sentenced to receive six strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to drinking alcohol at a hotel nightclub last year.

Kartika cried when the verdict was handed down last month but in an interview at her home in a small Malay village, she was composed about her fate.

“Sometimes I feel sad and stressed as I have tarnished my family’s name. But now after spending time reading the Koran, I feel calm and am not afraid of being caned,” she said.

The part-time model and mother of two, who lives in neighbouring Singapore, had called for her punishment to be carried out in public. (ANI)

Malay Islamic court orders caning of model for drinking beer

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.19 (ANI): An Islamic court has ordered the caning of a Muslim part-time model after she admitted to drinking beer in ahotel night club.

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno was also fined 5,000 ringgit (856 dollars) for her offence, Sky News reports.

Shukarno, 32, was caught consuming alcohol when police raided a hotel nightclub in Pahang state last year.

She pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to six lashes with a rattan cane.

The Islamic court said the punishment must take place within seven days from next Monday.

Kartika will be held in a women’s prison until then and afterwards released “as soon possible”, prosecutor Saiful Idham Sahimi said.

Caning is administered on the buttocks and usually breaks the skin leaving permanent scars.

But a lighter cane than the one used on men will be used on Kartika with the purpose to “educate” rather than punish, Saiful said.

“This is the first case in Malaysia. It is a good punishment because under Islamic law a person who drinks commits a serious offense,” he said.

Kartika has said she wants to be caned quickly so she can get on with her life with her husband and children. (ANI)

Genes, not beer, lead to ‘beer belly’

Melbourne, July 6 (ANI): It’s not the beer, but your genes, that cause that ‘not so loved’ ‘beer belly’, according to British scientists.

In a study of thousands of beer drinkers, it was discovered that although regular drinkers had a tendency to put on weight, they did not necessarily store fat around the abdomen.

For the study, the researchers examined over 20,000 people – 7876 men and 12,749 women – over an average of eight-and-a-half years.

It was found that men, who were classed as the heaviest drinkers-regularly consuming two pints of beer a day- put on the most weight.

However, after measuring hip-to-waist ratios, in order to establish which drinkers developed a potbelly, the researchers found that the results were spread across all drinkers.

The scientists concluded that genetic factors had a larger role in controlling how people put on weight than drinking beer.

The results revealed that the men who were most likely to put on weight were those who drank the most and also those who drank no beer at all.

Light drinkers saw the least variation in their waist size.

For women, drinking more beer was more directly associated with piling on the pounds.

But for all the categories, drinking beer led to overall weight gain on both the waist and the hips, and did not necessarily lead to a beer belly.

“This analysis showed the empirical basis for the common belief of a beer belly, as we found that beer drinking and waist circumference were positively associated,” the Courier Mail quoted the study as saying.

“However, our data provided only limited evidence for a site-specific effect of beer drinking on waist circumference and beer consumption seems to be rather associated with an increase in overall body fatness.

“In terms of public health relevance, it may be therefore important to focus on beer abstention to maintain body weight.

“In terms of the beer belly belief, an explanation could be that all the observed beer bellies in the population result from the natural variation in fat patterning and not from the fact of drinking beer,” it added.

The study by German and Swedish researchers has been published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. (ANI)

Prince Harry, Natalie Imbruglia ‘strike up close friendship’

London, June 29 (ANI): Prince Harry appears to have struck up a close friendship with Australian pop star Natalie Imbruglia since he parted ways with Chelsy Davy.

The 24-year-old Royal and the 34-year-old singer were spotted enjoying a cosy dinner after partying the night away at a rock concert.

They dined on burgers in the VIP area of the Hard Rock Calling event held in London’s Hyde Park. ccording to a witness, the pair exchanged warm hugs and a kiss when they met earlier in the evening during a performance by The Killers.

They watched the rockers’ set together from the side of the stage.

Following the show, they retreated to the plush backstage area for a meal, joined on their secluded table by singer Tom Jones and four others.

After polishing off their food, the group ordered a round of alcoholic lemon drop shots.

“Harry looked absolutely delighted to see Natalie when she arrived,” the Sun quoted the witness as saying.

“They embraced warmly and shared a quick kiss.

“They were dancing and joking together for the entire duration of The Killers’ set.

“At dinner, afterwards, they carried on chatting and laughing like old friends.

“Tom Jones joined them during their meal.

“They were having a whale of a time, drinking beer and wine before a round of shots,” the witness added. (ANI)

Beer Bikes – Beer Bikes Amsterdam – Beer Bike 2009 – Beer Bikes may be Outlawed in Amsterdam

Beer bikes are essentially pedal powered bars – large bicycles powered by up to 10 people pedalling as they cycle around Amsterdam, drinking beer and singing karaoke.

The Beer Bikes are rented out to tourists for partying, sightseeing or events like bachelor parties and the company renting the bike provides a driver who doesn’t drink. But in the wake of a number of accidents involving beer bikes, Amsterdam city council is considering limiting their use on public roads where other motorists are driving.

An Amsterdam newspaper reported that three women were injured in a beer bike accident two weeks ago and last week there was another accident.

Beer bikes have long been banned from Amsterdam’s red-light district but if this city council investigation deems them unsafe, they may be regulated even more.

Beer guzzling may cost athletes 3 days in recovery

Melbourne, April 5 (ANI): NSW Institute of Sport experts have warned sportspersons against drinking beer after training, as it may take cause them to take more than 60 hours to physically recover from.

Kenneth Graham, the chief scientists at the institute, has revealed that this suggestion is based on the findings of a study conducted at Massey University, New Zealand, and presented at the European College of Sports Science annual conference last year.

“The results of this study are absolutely stunning,” the Courier Mail quoted Graham as saying.

“The graph displaying recovery actually projects that you’re easily looking at 72 hours before you can recover from a few beers and the reality is you don’t get 70 hours between resistance work (weightlifting or body contact training) or running training when you’re an elite athlete,” he added.

Graham revealed that the alcohol level used in the study was the equivalent of five schooners of beer for a 100kg male.

Nathan Gibbs, a sports medicine doctor, points out that the adverse effects of alcohol on recovery are specifically significant in the case of injured or sore players.

“If you’re actually injured, alcohol will increase blood flow, leading to increased bleeding and swelling,” he said.

The researchers say that alcohol may cause dehydration among players who suffering from muscle soreness after a game, which in turn may slow the removal of lactic acid and consequently retard muscle recovery. (ANI)
